Simone is a badass ultra runner from Florida by way of Brazil. She popped onto my radar last year at Cocodona as one of the amazing Floridians that finished, but just a few weeks ago, she finished the 6633 Arctic Ultra. 380 miles around the Arctic circle in sub-zero temps. No crew, no pacers. Just Simone and her sled full of supplies. Hear her stories of adventure and be inspired to do hard, cold things. @simonevalentin_ultrarunnerhttps://mounttocoast.com?sca_ref=8429498.i3SphjUOzNhttps://mounttocoast.com/discount/MartySquirrel's Nut Butter: Natural Anti-Chafe & Skin Restoring SalvesPlayOn Pain Relief l Nature's Hot & Cold Therapy – PlayOn Reliefdiscount code = MartyG20@pacertravel - 727-433-2385 - pathcrx@aol.com@ultraspireCarolina Thread 8hr/12hr - May 3, 2025https://www.warriortrail.org/

Biking 430 mi/688 km alone in the wilderness in the depth of winter might seem crazy, but Jessie Gladish is no stranger to longer treks in the woods. She already completed the Montane Yukon Arctic Ultra race on foot and skis and now plans to do it on a bike. Trail conditions will dictate how much riding she can do versus pushing her bike as a glorified luggage cart. Only one thing is certain: she is determined to succeed. „Arctic.

Despite being a self confessed non-athlete and scientist - Paul Watkins has managed to compete in and win some of the worlds toughest races, as well as build multi-million dollar businesses - in multiple fields.Paul has climbed some of the toughest and most iconic mountains across all seven continents. He has climbed, trekked and adventured in Tanzania, Argentina, Alaska, the Arctic, Antarctica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Jordan and Nepal to name a few. He has also managed to race in some of Australia and the world's toughest ultra-marathons - including being one of only eight people in the world (and the first Australian) to finish and win the 614km 6633 Arctic Ultra. His training for these expeditions led him to becoming a Nationally certified weightlifting coach and an avid student of the nuanced art of endurance training. In the business world, armed with little more than a Pharmacy degree, Paul became a business owner, starting small and eventually building and running a multiple site pharmacy business with over 60 employees and over $15m in turnover. He went on to complete his MBA through the Melbourne Business School, left the pharmacy world and built (sometimes literally) a multi-million dollar property development portfolio. He is also a father to two young boys, a husband, a brother and a son - and still thinks of himself as a ‘nerd'.To learn more about Paul, visit:https://www.paulwatkins.com.au/To stay connected with Better Place Project and for updates and behind the scenes info, please follow us on social media:Website:https://www.betterplaceproject.org/ Instagram: @BetterPlaceProj To follow Steve on Instagram@SteveNorrisOfficialFacebook: Facebook.com/BetterPlaceProjectPodcastTwitter: @BetterPlaceProjEmail: ...
Hello beautiful people On today's podcast we have the absolutely exceptional Paul Watkins. Paul is a pharmacist, business owner, a stay at home dad and self-proclaimed nerd. He is a keynote speaker, author of the book, ‘Lost and Found: Why We Need Adventure' and winner of the 2019 6633 Arctic Ultra; referred to as ‘the toughest, coldest, windiest footrace on the planet'; a self-sufficient race over 614km in the Canadian Arctic with temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees! What I personally love about this conversation is, well, a lot really! Paul and I are really like minded; the kind of people that have more books than they do anything else, more things highlighted than is probably necessary, more notes than you know what to do with and are more likely to find friendships in the writings of ancient philosophers and adventurers that have passed. It's this sense of growth and development that really pulls people to Paul; and it's how he takes this growth and development away from the books and continues his journey of self-exploration to the elements and some of the most extreme conditions on Earth. In this conversation Paul shares what it means to lean into the savage within, that we are more than our job; that we are indeed the stories and experiences of our lives, and the importance of failure that lead him to a winning mindset in the 6633 Arctic Ultra. And for those of you that may not make it to the end of this podcast, I want to share part of what Paul believes it means to him To Be Human; Go and find things that are not your job title, your business card or your pay packet; find things that are essentially you, that you are passionate about and then go and write the best goddamn story you can!Enjoy one of my absolute favourite conversations, with the phenomenal Paul Watkins. Lowri Morgan is blooming' incredible. She is an ultra runner (despite a being told after a rugby accident that she would never run again), BAFTA winning presenter for S4C, Eisteddfod winner, and has lived with a nomadic tribe in Namibia. She is one of the few people on the planet to have taken the 2.5 hour submersion journey underwater (that's just to get to the sea bed) to see the Titanic in her final resting place. She has completed the 200 mile Dragon Back Ultra Race, the 350 mile Arctic Ultra and the 220km Jungle Marathon. She is quite possibly the toughest women I've ever met. She is a lesson in perseverance, in saying 'yes' and the woman who brings us the nine life rules of Nel. Buy Lowri's book, Beyond Limits from your local book shop or the usual outlets. “93% Harry Potter and 7% Bear Grylls”. That’s how Paul Watkins’ website describes him. There are lots of other labels that could be applied too; Pharmacist, mountaineer, full-time dad, ultramarathon runner, motivational speaker and property developer. However, the one label that doesn’t sit comfortably with Paul is “athlete”, which is difficult to appreciate when you consider his list of achievements. Paul has climbed major peaks on all 7 continents and competed in some of toughest ultramarathon runners in Australia and the world. Most recently, Paul competed in the 6633 Arctic Ultra; a 614km/380mi self-supported race in the Arctic Circle in temperatures ranging from -20˚ to -40˚ celsius (-4˚ to -4˚F) with an 80% drop-out rate. And not only did he finish the race, he won! There’s an interesting theme reoccurring through much of Paul’s story; he’s often “failed” on the first go. He ‘failed’ on his first attempt to summit Denali (the highest mountain in North America). I first met Paul in Argentina when we were on the same expedition to climb Aconcagua, the highest mountain in South America - and also his second attempt to do so. And his victorious race at the 6633 Arctic Ultra in 2019 was his second attempt after he DNF’d 250km into this first attempt in 2017. And we discuss how on earth a self-confessed nerd won one of the toughest, longest, windiest and coldest ultramarathons in the world. Paul is a great storyteller and someone who has thought deeply about what it takes to bring the best out of yourself, and others. Welcome to episode 1 of the Runner's World UK podcast. In this episode, RW reader Maud Hodson, from East London Runners, discusses why she thinks it's high time men and women ran the same distances at cross-country In 'Human Race' we talk to Kevin Webber, who was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer in 2014, and discuss how he's used running to inspire himself and others. He discusses some of the races he's taken part in, including the Marathon des Sables, and looks forward to taking part in the 6633 Arctic Ultra in March Will Watt, co-founder of The Swimmer, pops in to talk about the event, which involves a half marathon of running and four cold swims. He says he thinks running and swimming are a great combination because, unlike cycling, they are incredibly simple. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This episode was recorded on World Diabetes Day, which is a day of global awareness launched by the International Diabetes Federation. I could not think of a more appropriate guest to interview that day than the one and only, Roddy Riddle. Roddy was a competitive cyclist for Scotland and competed in the Commonwealth Games. He was ultimately diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 40. Roddy then took that new reality and set out to inspire the world by competing in some of the toughest foot races around. In 2013, Roddy competed in the Marathon des Sables, which is a 250K race across the Sahara desert. In 2016, he decided to go to the other extreme and competed in the 6633 Arctic Ultra, which is a 560K ultra marathon. Unfortunately, Roddy was unable to complete that race, and he describes that in detail during our conversation, but he was determined to come back the following year and take care of unfinished business. Earlier this year, Roddy not only completed the 6633 Arctic Ultra, he managed to finish the race in second place. He accomplished all of this while proving to the world that anything is possible with type 1 diabetes, or any other challenges we might face. We dive in deep to talk about the challenges Roddy encountered during each race, how he maintained a positive mindset despite those challenges (including episodes of some insane hallucinations during the 6633 Arctic races), and what he's hoping the world will gain from his story. Roddy is one of those rare individuals who has been on my short list of people I was hoping to interview for the show. This is a special look into the mind of a tremendous athlete, but equally as important, a tremendous human being simply working hard to make a positive impact on the rest of the world.
Roddy Riddle recently completed one of the most brutal & extreme races in the world. The 6633 Arctic Ultra is a 350 solo foot race through brutal cold, wind and isolation. Dozens enter and only a few finish ever year. Roddy is the first and only person with type 1 diabetes to enter the race so far, and the first T1D to finish it. He had to withdraw from the race in 2016. He shares why he was so motivated to finish and what he learned from last time around that helped him not only make it all the way, but come in second. In our Community Connection this week, we check back in with the Elbow Bump Kid, Logan Merwin. He's raising money for several diabetes causes, including CWD Friends for Life Conference. His big news? He's got a sponsor! We'll talk about how a race truck team got involved.
This week, a new campaign to stop a dangerous problem: DKA before a diabetes diagnosis. Beyond Type 1 wants to educate about the signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes in a new campaign involving pediatricians. Stacey talks to Tom Scher about the group's new multi-state campaign, how doctors are responding to it and what DKA actually is. Stacey also brings us up to date on how people with type 1 diabetes fared in the brutal Iditarod and 6633 Arctic Ultra races. Plus, if you're a mom with type 1, Glu needs your help. Hear about a survey for women with T1D who've given birth.
In this episode Kris and Will get to chat to one of Will's heros. The absolutely marvelous Mimi Anderson!
