We are continuing our Characters of Christmas series with today's guest Ross Lester. Ross is a friend of mine, he's the campus pastor at one of our locations of The Austin Stone Community Church, and he is no stranger to The Happy Hour. Ross was on Episode #375, and I'm excited to have him back to talk about Joseph, the father of  Jesus' during His time spent on earth. Listen, you are in for a great episode! Ross and I talk about the relationship between Joseph and Jesus, and you guys, I'm really curious if Jesus gave Joseph a few secrets while they were working in the shop together. I wonder if they talked about all the daddy-son things. I ask Ross the same questions I have asked our previous guest during this series: How does Joseph point us back to Jesus, and what do we see about God's character through Joseph and Jesus' relationship? One thing I've never thought about that Ross mentioned is that when Mary, Joseph's fiance, comes to him saying she's pregnant as a virgin, Joseph could have immediately put her before the court. In that time, Mary would have been stoned to death publicly. But instead, Joseph is so Christ-like that he lives out the story of the woman caught in adultery in John 8, instead wanting to divorce Mary privately instead of having her tried. Ross says he believes Joseph wanted to release Mary and actually give her another opportunity to rebuild her life instead of being put to death. The Bible describes Joseph as a righteous man and we see that all throughout the Bible when his name is mentioned. Joseph models Christ by being obedient. He kept the law, which is all about mercy. He signs up to take on a child that's not his own biologically. He eventually has to move his young family to Egypt to protect Jesus. And Joseph is full of humility – he doesn't center himself in the story. I don't know about you, but my desire is to live a righteous life devoted to God like Joseph. After listening to today's episode, you are going to love Jesus more as you learn more about the people who surrounded him at His birth.Connect with JamieFacebook //  Instagram // YouTubeGET ALL THE LINKS FROM THE SHOW HERE

Today we are starting a new series called “Collaboration Over Competition,” and I'm super excited about my guests. I'm joined by my husband Aaron and my dear friend Jaleesa McCreary. Aaron and Jaleesa work together at The Austin Stone Community Church, and in this episode we talk about how they collaborate in the workplace. In addition to leading worship at our church's downtown congregation, Jaleesa is the worship team manager, overseeing all of the worship leaders across our six different campuses. As the pastor of worship and creativity, Aaron leads and serves the creative teams at all six locations, supporting the people tasked with design, film, and production. Aaron and Jaleesa share their story, the journey they've taken to get where they are today, and what it's like working together. We talk about the dynamics of the relationship between males and females, how they work through conflicts when things arise, and why it's hard for people to collaborate, especially working in the church. We talk about how Jaleesa has felt championed by Aaron, and what it looks like for Aaron to empower women. Jaleesa says what helps her in her role is thinking of herself less as the person who leads the worship leaders and more as the person who serves the worship leaders. You're going to love this conversation, and we've got more episodes on “Collaboration Over Competition” coming your way next week, too! Connect with JamieFacebook //  Instagram // YouTubeGET ALL THE LINKS FROM THE SHOW HERE

This episode is brought to you by the Worship Leader Institute.   When is the last time you spoke the name of Jesus over someone? Has God ever asked you to do something radical like walk away from the Church for a year to rediscover him? In today's episode, we feature a remarkable story followed up by an uncomfortable challenge surrounding our “priesthood” from Jesse Reeves. He's a church planter and a prolific songwriter with hundreds of titles to his name including How Great Is Our God, Lord I Need You, Indescribable, Our God, I Speak Jesus and a bunch more. He bases his challenge on this verse from 1 Peter. I Peter 2:9-10 says, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy." It's important to note that both Jesse and all of us here at Authentic Media and Worship Leader are massive fans and supporters of the local church. Please listen to this episode through the filter of iron sharpens iron and don't be afraid to reevaluate the status quo. My guest for The Happy Hour #375 is Ross Lester. Ross is the Pastor of Preaching at The Austin Stone Community Church. He is originally from South Africa, and has now been in the states for three years with his wife, Sue and children. I’m so thankful for Ross’ voice and his perspective on the world as a Christ follower who grew up overseas. In today’s episode, we talk about the American Church vs. American Culture, and his experience of learning what it looks like to be a pastor in the states through an international lens. Ross also dives into the problem of Christian nationalism, and lays out 10 signs of it at play. It’s not an easy or comfortable thing to talk about, but it’s so important to address as followers of Christ and be aware of what we put our faith into. Ross says, “The problem with Christian nationalism is that it is framed as a culture war, rather than a call to follow Jesus.” Oof. What I respect most about Ross is that he knows the potential cost of speaking on these topics, but knows his calling to obey and honor Christ is so much greater. My guest for episode 18 is the beautiful Jaleesa McCreary! Jaleesa has been a worship leader at The Austin Stone Community Church for the past 7 years. In addition to leading worship weekly, Jaleesa spends much of her time investing in the development of female worship leaders and teaching worship ministry philosophy at The Austin Stone.Jaleesa shares her incredible testimony of walking through the loss of her voice and experiencing what felt like the death of a dream. Without singing, Jaleesa’s life felt empty, but God remained faithful through it all. You are sure to be inspired by her journey. I love Jaleesa’s heart for people to encounter God personally in worship and take that encounter with God outside of Sundays. As a young, biracial woman, Jaleesa shares about the challenges and insecurities she faced becoming one of the first female worship leaders in a predominately white church. We chat about what it means to “go scared” and step out in courage rather than being held back by fear. She helps encourage other women to take similar steps of faith and understand that they are called to so much more as worship leaders than merely singing. Many of us have felt a sense that our identity as an artist is being stripped during this season of uncertainty and isolation. I love Jaleesa’s encouragement to lean into that process and allow God to shape our identity and purpose.Check out our website http://creativeimpactpodcast.com for the full show notes that include Jaleesa's biography and links mentioned in this episode. This week on Real Talk with Rachael, we’re talking with Jamie Ivey, author of the book “You Be You: Why Satisfaction and Success Are Closer Than You Think” Jamie is a podcaster, writer, and speaker from Austin, Texas. She is the proud mama of four kids and the wife of Aaron, worship pastor of The Austin Stone Community Church. Jamie loves to encourage women to passionately follow Jesus through whatever stage of life. She does this through writing and her weekly podcast, The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey.  We’re talking about: Jamie found herself and others comparing themselves to other women in a negative way. Are you looking to be successful, or are you looking to be faithful to what God has given to you? First, find your “why”. What motivates you? What’s your purpose? Once you’ve figured out why you’re doing something, you can tell if you’re being faithful. Quality is so much more important than quantity. Trust that where you are right now is exactly where God wants you. Your voice matters right where you are. Even if you don’t have a platform, your ideas, convictions, and passions matter. When we feel like God is holding out on us, we tend to get jealous of what we think others have. Don’t be afraid to take a Social Media break for the sake of your soul. QUOTES FROM EPISODE 16: “I decided from day one of the Austin Stone that we wanted to have a multi teacher model, and that I wasn’t going to be the only guy that preached.” “All leaders need to realize we have limitations. There are things we are good at and things that we are not good at.” “The whole idea behind the law of the lid is that an organization will only grow to the level of the capacity of the senior leader.” “If I had never given away power, influence, and leadership, I think we would have grown to a certain level and the growth would have stopped.” “I found where I was weak, gave those jobs away to others who were really good at it, and I let them run.” “What good does it do if we are growing a church, but I am losing my wife.” “Leadership is a pressure cooker. It takes time to learn and grow, especially in your character.” “Churches are kind of like a bus. People get on and they ride awhile and they get off, and you can’t take it personally.” “The best way to lead people is in gentleness and kindness like Jesus did.” “The point of striving for excellence is to remove all the distractions that are in the way so people can place their eyes on Jesus.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Man Catches Flying Bird with Bare Hand The Long Walk Home by Matt Carter The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell Center Church by Tim Keller The Christ-Centered Expositor by Tony Merida  Free Ministry Grid Course on Christ-Centered Exposition with Tony Merida Your Unique Design Personality Test

BEST QUOTES “As leaders, we need to be faithful with the stewardship of time that God gives us to impact the world.” “As leaders grow and develop their own voice, you must fight to still lead together.” “The minute we assume something is going to happen, it doesn't happens.” “Everyday I have to ask God to make his will be done and not mine, otherwise, I am going to make a dumpster fire of my life.” “I have a finish line every day where I stop working.” “If we think that our finish line is bed time, than we can view our kids as another job.” “I try to make it a priority not to only be around other leaders and other Christians. I want to connect with people who don’t care about my title.” “We can lead successfully in other places, but if we don’t lead well in our home, the other places we lead will eventually lose credibility.” “As leaders, there comes a time where have to say no to things that are good, but they are not great.” “Our kids are going to love Jesus not by what we tell then, but by what they see us doing.” “Young leaders need to spend a lot more time listening and preparing for the long haul.” “Leadership is a long journey. It is not something you can quick bake. It is not a microwavable skill.” “Leaders navigate and negotiate change.” RECOMMENDED RESOURCES Strategic Leadership Community hosted by Kevin Peck and Josh Patterson We'd like to thank our sponsor NRB TV. The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey consistently ranks as one of the top 20 podcasts in the spirituality and religion category and was even nominated for a Podcasters Association award this year. Jamie and I talked about everything from her brief career in radio (and how she won an American-Idol-like casting call to land the job), to why being vulnerable and transparent with each other and others only makes us stronger, and how we, as women, should be FOR each other, cheering each other on, lifting one another up, encouraging each other, and celebrating each other's successes. We also talked about how there was a point in time when her career was thriving, but her family was suffering, and how she made the hard decision at the time to step away from a thriving career... but how God had a bigger and better plan for her life. Jamie loves to encourage women to passionately follow Jesus through whatever stage of life. She does this through writing and her weekly podcast, The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey. We had so much fun chatting with Jamie, getting to chat with a fellow podcaster is always a blast! Jamie shares her thoughts on what success is: "success is something that I've just started thinking about (...) in the last year... when I think about my show to be a success, it means that people are enjoying it, and it's encouraging people, and inspiring women and connecting women, those are things that are really important to me." More thoughts on success, as it relates to podcasting. {we couldn't agree with this more!} "let's be honest, success equals numbers, right? Is it okay to say that? So the balance of I want more downloads ... but if I had more downloads but no one came to me and said, Jamie, your show really encourages me, I don't think it would be a success for me." We also chat with Jamie about how she got into podcasting, it started with winning a spot on a morning radio show! "one of the things I loved about radio... i loved having a voice, I loved being able to encourage people, and talk, and have my voice out there." We also chat about why it's so important to value ourselves, our work and so much more!
