Calvin Nowell's testimony about his struggles with weight produced one of the most vulnerable and powerful episodes of The Walk that we've ever released. There's no question that walking through something as painful as watching your child suffer will cause you to question your faith in God. "For All My Life" singer, songwriter, and worship leader TAYA is our guest in this episode of The Walk. Who is TAYA Gaukrodger?  Long before TAYA became one of UNITED's most acclaimed and impactful vocalists, with over one billion streams and numerous world tours over the last decade, her journey with Jesus began in the small town of Lismore, Australia. Her mother led her in the sinner's prayer at age five and she attended a small community church with her family where her father was an elder & worship leader. In this episode our guest, worship leader and artist Lydia Ignegneri, talks about how God used her worship ministry as a creative training ground to raise up her immensely talented, yet overactive and frustrated son. Two-thirds (66 percent) of American young adults who attended a Protestant church regularly for at least a year as a teenager say they also dropped out for at least a year between the ages of 18 and 22, according to a new study from Nashville-based Lifeway Research. Mentorship and coaching is seen all throughout the Bible, but what is not talked about often is the sacrifice needed from both the mentor and the mentee. In this episode, Matt Maher takes us through a story of embarrassment and shame that shaped his faith walk and identified his need for a mentor. The biblical reference in the episode is based on Deuteronomy 34. 4 And the Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, ‘I will give it to your offspring.' I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.” 5 So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord… Then to verse 9 - And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. Moses had sinned against God and, even though God had said all along that he would use Moses to lead his people to the promised land, he didn't allow Moses “into” the promised land. God showed Moses the completion of his vision, but didn't allow Moses to see it through himself. He used Moses's mentee, Joshua. What would that look like for you? Would you be okay if God had given you a vision, but didn't intend for you to complete that vision? Only to instigate it and be a part of pushing it along? We all assume we're the hero of our own story, but when we realize we're a small part of a much greater story, we release expectations and are more able to mentor and guide others, which is the way of Jesus. He mentored 12 through his entire ministry and in order to complete the vision God had for him he was required to die, much in the same way that Moses did. Of course, the people of that day thought that the vision died with Jesus, but for those of us who are followers of The Way, we know the good news that happened three days later. But, to the point of this episode, those that Jesus mentored founded the very church that still exists today. So, leaders, reflect on who has a similar call and vision to your own that you can mentor. For those who don't have a mentor, seek one out through prayer. Our culture celebrates things like “life hacks” and “faster is better” and “multi-tasking your way to success,” but all Jesus wants from us is to receive his Love and Abide with him. To develop a personal and intimate relationship with him takes time and a commitment to actually focusing on getting away and drawing close. In this episode of The Walk, worship leader and songwriter Aaron Williams tells a story about a very difficult situation that he had to walk through and that forced him to the intimate places to meet Jesus on a deeper level. Acts 4:13 says, “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” It's an incredible reminder that the disciples that actually walked this earth with Jesus had another level of authority given their intimate relationship with him. The gift of the Bible and the Holy Spirit mean that we still have access to study with and understand the living God, while actually talking with him and developing that personal relationship with him. These phrases “personal relationship” tend to bring with them the baggage of being overused “christianeze,” but that doesn't make them less true. There's no question that rest and rejuvenation are built into God's daily routines for us. In this episode we hear from pastor, author, and entrepreneur Curtis Zackery who tells an intimate story of when he was confronted with the need to rest. Most of us can relate to a situation where we were forced to stop due to our inability to listen to the father and slow down. It's almost built into the DNA of our culture to work so hard we end the day having nothing left. What if we could operate from a place of unending joy and vitality? Does God run out of energy? He does not, but even God took a sabbath day as he knew the value of rest. Exodus 31:17 NIV “17 It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.'” He built it into HIS system for us that we have broken because we have been pursuing the world's system. Our way of life needs to be completely God centered. We should reorient our world around him leaving the things of this world, including stress and anxiety, behind. So many Worship Leaders are so concerned about being accused of “performing” and not actually leading worship. Questions like “are we doing it well?” and “how did we sound?'' come before the important question of “did we see lives changed?'' and “did people meet Jesus?” There's a tension that exists between the space of worship and the space of performance. Accusations of “that church just puts on a show” are prevalent within the western Church and our megachurches have spent lots of tithe money on creating a highly produced Sunday service. God can walk us through anything. In Cheri Keaggy's case it was the death of a parent. This episode makes me ask, how would I walk through a tragedy like that? Hopefully, as Cheri did, I would walk through it with scripture, prayer, and faith. Her testimony on how God brought the right Word at the right time is an important reminder for all of us. We limit how much the Holy Spirit can speak to us if we don't really know our Bible. In addition to comforting us during times of trials, like in Cheri's case, she also references the importance of knowing the Word of God in times of celebration. These two emotions of joy and pain are both a blessing when they are partnered with scripture and God's grace. For Cheri, those scriptures are also a guiding light in her songwriting process. Laura has spent the last 20 years singing anywhere between 15 and 18 hours a week at the International House of Prayer in Kansas City. Her sets are two hours at a time and they mostly sing spontaneously from the Bible. Every day they pick a passage as a team and turn that into a worship set. With that much time in prayerful worship, Laura has so much to share with our audience of Worship Teams and Worshippers, but in this episode she shares how the Lord taught her to sing her way into the truth.
