Will Canada finally release top-secret papers on suspected Nazi war criminals who moved to the country?

The CJN Daily

As the fallout continues from the Canadian Parliament applauding a 98-year-old former member of a Nazi-led Ukrainian Waffen SS unit, the spotlight is focusing on how the former soldier Yaroslav Hunka and thousands of other enemy troops like him, were permitted to come to Canada in the first place. For decades, Jewish groups have been calling on the Canadian government to release the complete files from the Commission of Inquiry on War Criminals in Canada—known as the Deschênes Commission—which, from 1985 to 1986, looked into how many Nazi war criminals were here and what Canada could do about it. While the final report led to a few (mostly unsuccessful) prosecutions, much of the detailed information, including the names and cases of hundreds of other suspects, was never released. The papers are held by Library and Archives Canada, the Department of Justice and the RCMP. Now, however, some are hoping the international public embarrassment might convince the federal government to finally reckon with Canada's past and release all these historic files. On The CJN Daily, we meet the main Canadian historian, Alti Rodal, who worked for the Deschênes Commission nearly 40 years ago. Then we speak to David Matas, B'nai Brith's senior legal counsel, who intervened in those hearings in 1985 and continues to lobby for the full records to be made public. What we talked about Why Edmonton's Jewish community wants two monuments honouring Ukrainian Nazi soldiers finally taken down, in The CJN Read the B'nai Brith Canada brief to Parliament on why Canada should release the Deschênes Commission documents in full and read the Canadian government's update (1998) on names of suspected war criminals and what happened to their cases What the political fallout will be on Canada's “blunder” to give two standing ovations to a former Ukrainian soldier in the Waffen SS's 14th Division, on The CJN Daily Credits The CJN Daily is written and hosted by Ellin Bessner (@ebessner on Twitter). Does Canada really need another organization to 'combat anti-Jewish hatred'? Daniel Koren thinks so

With the third largest Jewish Diaspora in the world, Canada has no shortage of communal organizations: B'nai Brith, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, plenty of Federations, cross-country campus Hillels—the list goes on. All of them, in some way, claim they are combatting antisemitism. So do we really need another one? Daniel Koren thinks so. After working at The CJN, B'nai Brith Canada and Hasbara Canada over the past decade, this May he founded Allied Voices for Israel, a campus organization that promotes Zionism by bringing together Jewish and non-Jewish students for trips to Israel, media fellowships and summer retreats. And, as he shares on this episode of Rivkush, the origin for the idea can be traced to his heritage as a Bukharan Jew whose own family traditions are a medley of Middle Eastern and Central Asian customs—nothing like the Ashkenormative standards that have come to define Jews, and to an extent Israel, in mainstream North American culture. Israel isn't exactly known for golf. And with just one 18-hole course in the whole country, neither is it a destination for many pro golfers or passionate fans. That may be why it took until 2014 for the country to produce a player who qualified to join an LPGA Tour: Laetitia Beck. Since then, she's competed at the highest levels for her home country: at the Olympics, the Women's British Open, the LPGA and, of course, the Maccabiah, where she's won numerous gold medals. In all that time, she's proudly represented Israel, even displaying the Magen David on her golf shoes. This year, on Aug. 15, she'll be teeing up at Montreal's Beaconsfield club as part of B'nai Brith Canada's second annual Chip Away at Hate Classic. We caught up with her while she was on the road in Michigan to hear about golf culture in the Holy Land and her thoughts about Montreal's abundance of Jewish greens. Also in this episode, Gabe and Jamie give a quick Maccabiah 2022 recap, play a clip from Zach Hyman's recent fundraiser tournament and give props to the greatest Jewishly named pro MLB player to ever grace a baseball diamond: Bubby Rossman. Their first high holidays: Meet Canada's newest Jewish converts

Canada's Jewish community is a little larger this high holiday season. In July, 11 adults and two young children officially converted—and all of them live in Kelowna, B.C., with a Jewish population of about 500. Well, about 513 now. This was a unique conversion process for many reasons. Being virtual, of course, classes were led by rabbis from across the country over Zoom. Since Kelowna doesn't have a mikvah, the converts took a dip on the beach in Lake Okanagan. And the converts' individual reasons for joining Judaism are myriad. None are for the usual reasons, like getting married or joining the Israel army. Somehow, they all found each other in their tight-knit community and came to the same spiritual realization. Today, two of the women join the show, along with the rabbi who led the conversion, to discuss their reasons for converting, what the process was like during a pandemic and how they feel going into their first-ever high holiday season. How should Jews think about race? Some prefer not to think about it at all—but ignoring problems in our community won't make them disappear. Jews of colour routinely fight for visibility and push for white Jews to think twice before making assumptions, especially in Jewish spaces. Tyler Samuels has felt this personally. As a Jew of Jamaican descent, a recent graduate from the University of Toronto, a summer intern at B'nai Brith Canada and the vice president of engagement at Jews of Colour Canada, Tyler has been a vocal presence in Canada's Jewish community, speaking out against implicit antisemitism and racism from both sides of the political spectrum. In the first episode of Rivkush, Tyler joins to discuss his experiences with campus activists, his reaction to the recent emergency summit on antisemitism and the lesser-known connections between Jamaicans and Jews. Later, Libby Znaimer is joined by Canadian Senator Salma Ataulahjan, Michal Schlesinger, Senior Human Rights Liaison at B'nai Brith Canada and Simon Granat, Senior Manager of Policy and Communications at The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA). Today, the Federal Liberals are hosting a National Summit on antisemitism. Tomorrow: they host one on Islamophobia. The move comes after a spike in hatred/racist incidents targeting both communities. Just last month, things turned deadly, when Nathaniel Veltman, a white, 22-year-old male ran over the Afzaal family in London Ontario, with a vehicle, killing four members. B'nai Brith says that as many as 2,610 antisemitic incidents were recorded last year. So, where do we go from here, and what do the leaders of both communities hope will be the outcome of these summits? Finally, Libby Znaimer is joined by Doris Grinspun, CEO of the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO). Together, they talk about the RNAO

On July 18, 1994, a car bomb blew up the Jewish community centre in Buenos Aires, Argentina, levelling the city's main Jewish federation building. Now referred to as the AMIA bombing, the terrorist attack killed 85 Jewish people and injured 300 more. It was the worst terrorist attack in the history of Argentina and the worst attack against Jews outside Israel since the Holocaust. What's more troubling is that the perpetrators have never been confirmed. Investigators and the public blame operatives from Iran and Hezbollah, but no suspects have been brought to justice. Combined with the bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, which happened two years prior, many Jewish families from Argentina took this as a cue to leave. Some moved to Canada, where they are still dealing with the trauma—and seeking justice. Hernan Popper is one of those Argentinian Jews. He now lives in Winnipeg, but he lived through the AMIA bombing; on today's show, he joins to describe what it was like hearing the explosion and how he remembers those who died that day.
