Nel pieno della sua carriera, però, spiazzando tutti Andrea, a soli 31 anni, decide di ritirarsi dalla pallacanestro e sparisce completamente dalle scene. Najprej je lansko poletje kronal z naslovom evropskih prvakov in uvrstitvijo v idealno peterko prvenstva, nato pa pri Realu že tako izpopolnjeno igro dvignil na še višji nivo ter sanjsko sezono kronal z naslovom prvaka Evrolige in vsemi individualnimi priznanji, ki jih je lahko prejel. Postal je MVP v Evroligi in španskem prvenstvu ter se uvrstil v idealno peterko Evrolige in španskega prvenstva. Seveda ni potrebno posebej omenjati, da je bil v obeh tekmovanjih izbran tudi za najboljšega igralca do 22 let. V Evropi se vsi strinjajo, stroka in navijači, Luka Dončić je bodoči zvezdnik NBA lige. Toda mnenje na drugi strani Atlantika ni povsem enako. Dončić je ta teden po poročanju zanesljivih virov, na projekcijah letošnjega nabora celo padel za nekaj mest. Mnogi Američani dvomijo, da bo upravičil visoka pričakovanja evropskih košarkarskih navdušencev, ki polagajo upe na mladega zvezdnika Reala. Draft je vsako sezono eden izmed osrednjih športnih dogodkov, ki mu tam posvečajo ogromno pozornosti. Tudi Dončič se je zato znašel pod zaslepljujočimi žarometi ameriških medijev, ki pa o njem ne poročajo le z laskavimi besedami. V Phoenixu so tako proti najstniku osrednji mediji, ki močno lobirajo za izbor centra DeAndre Aytona, sprožili pravo gonjo, ki so jo podkrepili z žaljvimi poročili anonimnih oglednikov, ki o mlademu zvezdniku širijo domnevno neosnovane laži. V tokratni epizodi smo se zato vprašali kje se skrivajo razlogi za negativno propagando v zadnjem času. Kako je možno, da je Dončić na draft projekcijah padel po zgodovinskem uspehu in zreli igri na zaključnem turnirju v Beogradu? Ali je možno, da ga v Evropi precenjujemo? Ali morda le ne gre za transcendentnega igralca, ki ga lahko vidimo le enkrat na več deset let? Ali morda na drugi strani podcenjujemo študentsko košarko in Aytona, za katerega pa nekateri renomirani ameriški strokovnjaki trdijo, da bo postal eden od najboljših igralcev vseh časov? Jasno je, da bo ne glede na mesto izbora, Luka Dončić svojo kariero začel pod mikroskopom medijev in navijačev, ki jim bo vsaka njegova napaka dala zaleta. Če Dončić ne bo uspel, bo on, ne Bargnani ali Miličić, postal sinonim za evropske igralce, ki so pogoreli, njegov primer pa bodo večno citirali. Pritisk na ramenih najstnika se šele dobro začenja.
