To conclude our August Archive Season, this week we're joined by the legend that is Dr Jean Dodds talking about vaccines. As one of the pioneers to research the duration of immunity (DOI) of modern vaccines, Dr Jean has led the way for the WSAVA (The World Small Animal Veterinary Association) to recommend Titre Testing over annual boosters. Having studied how the DOI of initial puppy shots can last a minimum of three years, if not a life time, Dr Jean believes in #TestBeforeYouTreat and that's for annual vaccines as well as wormers. A Titre tests picks up the serological immunity that your dog has developed against the core diseases: Parvo, Distemper and Hepatitis, and helps pet guardians manage their dog's immunisation rather than over vaccinate. For over five decades Dr Jean has noted the side effects of many vaccines, not least from the ingredients or adjuvants that are added including Mercury. We chat about the difference between active vaccines and non-active vaccines, and the possible side effects from the latter, and what you can do to minimise the risks. We chat about the best time to vaccinate your puppy, and we also discuss Hemopet the blood bank Dr Jean founded in 1986 where bloods for Thyroid assessments are sent globally. In 2015 Dr Jean published the best selling book Canine Nutrigenomics - foods to heal your dog naturally. We also talk about environmental stressors and the food chain too! Dr. Natalie Craven from Pinellas Animal Hospital has returned to our show to decode the science behind vaccines and their significance in ensuring your pet's health. This episode is packed with crucial information about core vaccines for puppies and how they safeguard our pets against diseases like rabies, distemper, and parvovirus. We bring to light common misconceptions about diseases like kennel cough, and how vaccination, along with safe socializing practices, can help keep these at bay. Our discussion extends to the alarming realities of Lyme disease in Florida and its impact on our dogs. Dr. Craven stresses the importance of the Lyme vaccine, and others such as leptospirosis, canine influenza, and bordetella. We also tackle the rising anti-vaccination sentiment and the importance of re-evaluating vaccines in the veterinary field.Towards the end of our conversation, we delve into the situations when a dog may not be suitable for vaccination, taking into account factors such as age, illnesses, and the effects of chemotherapy. Dr. Craven shares valuable insights on the risks and side effects of vaccinations in pets, emphasizing the importance of consulting with a veterinarian before proceeding. We conclude the episode with a compelling discussion about titer testing and why investing in vaccines is paramount for your pet's well-being. This summer I'm releasing bonus episodes of The Take Home. No new lectures on leadership, instead I'm sharing the amazing podcasts created by the students in my Leadership for Sport Professionals class. Today's bonus episode features "The Leadership Lab" produced and created by Jacob Ontiveros and Mac Douglas. In the podcast, they interview Marcus Mlcak. Marcus is a Trinity alumnus (@TrinityUAlumni) and Partner at EY. While at Trinity, Marcus was on the golf team (@TrinityUGolf) and he's continued to be active in campus life serving as an alumni mentor in the 1869 Scholars program. During the conversation Marcus talks about learning from failure, how sports are crucibles for leadership development, and why leaders must be able to work closely with those who are different from themselves. He says that great leaders focus on “we, not me” and why they must build relationships as a means to understand how to motivate each employee as an individual, rather than a cog in the machine. I love his servant leadership approach and I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did! Let me know what you think; reach out on LinkedIn or at @TingleJK on Twitter. No new lectures on leadership, instead I'm sharing the amazing podcasts created by the students in my Leadership for Sport Professionals class. Today's bonus episode features "Leading the Game" produced and created by Sofia Leobas, Jack Downes, and Jordyn Williams. In the podcast, they interview Dean Mabson (@dean_mabson) from Sheffield, England. Dean is the Managing Director at The Evo Group and Head of Methodology at EvoSoccer/EvoRugby. Dean details that leadership is ultimately about helping people reach their hopes and dreams and in order to do so, leaders must truly know their followers. He also describes that leaders are innovators and life-long learners, who demonstrate a willingness to be vulnerable. And I truly appreciate Dean's two guiding philosophies: 1) focus on solutions, not the problems and 2) hire good people and get out of their way. No new lectures on leadership, instead I'm sharing the amazing podcasts created by the students in my Leadership for Sport Professionals class. Today's bonus episode features "The Timely Rebound" produced and created by Damian De Leon, Dani Cala, and Garrett Moran. In the podcast, they interview Danielle Hubenak, a Trust Solutions Senior Manager at PwC. Danielle is a Trinity alumna (@TrinityUAlumni) and was active during her time on campus as a member of the Student Managed Fund and standout on the Trinity women's basketball team (@TUWBBall). Danielle highlights that great leaders are those who focus on asking good questions, rather than providing all the answers. She describes that asking good questions can be a sign of vulnerability, which is a first step to developing trusting relationships. She encourages us to focus on the process; to enjoy the journey and to follow our passions. Danielle mentions that leaders who focus on people first allows for a strong focus on task during “crunch time” and I love how she uses basketball as an analogy for leadership. The emphasis on Path-Goal theory creates an important connection to class material. It's a fun podcast format and filled with lots of leadership nuggets. Robert highlights that providing the answers isn't what everyone needs and that great leaders help everyone, themselves included, stay focused on the process rather than the outcome. This week we're joined by the legend that is Dr Jean Dodds talking about vaccines. In the final episode of season 2, I explore Hill's approach to Team Leadership as detailed in chapter 16 from the 9th edition of Peter G. Northouse's "Leadership: Theory and Practice." During the segment, I highlight connections to our class' definition of leadership, discuss the importance of a strong culture, provide an overview of the model, and conclude with strengths and criticisms of the model. In the Rapid Fire Interview segment, I am fortunate to be joined by Chris Ramsey MBE, the Technical Director for Queens Park Rangers Football Club (@QPR). Chris has a career in professional football that spans nearly 45 years and was appointed as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2019. His commitment to diversity and inclusion is astounding and his lifelong quest to become better at his craft was born out of a genuine curiosity and thirst for knowledge. We discuss his leadership philosophy, which includes a strength-based approach, intentional role-modeling, behavioral consistency, and why empathy is important. He highlights how personality shapes our reactions to situations, why it's important to use your privileges to advocate for change, and that sport won't become more inclusive until a time when the decision-makers have an open mind. Send me your thoughts and let's keep the conversation going on Twitter (@TingleJK) or on LinkedIn. The first segment of each episode is geared specifically for his students and features a brief lecture on course readings, much of which is from the 9th edition of "Leadership: Theory and Practice" by Peter G. Jay is a fellow member of the Trinity University alumni community and during his time on the Trinity men's basketball team they competed in the NCAA tournament four straight seasons. He highlights why building relationships matter and the power of transparency and collaboration. Jay knows that great leaders serve their team members by advocating for resources, which often takes the form of leading up and leading laterally. He also describes how being aware that the leader isn't always the expert actually enables others to act and allows the team to be more successful. She highlights the value of listening to your inner voice, that great leaders create cultures where employees can feel seen and heard, and why The Five Dysfunctions of a Team is a valuable tool for organizations, big or small. Shelly says that everyone in the organization, regardless of title, can 1) show up with curiosity and courage, 2) be yourself, and 3) work to build trust. It was such a joy to catch up with an old friend who is doing her part to make the world a better place!
