When eccentric toy maker Ty Warner created a new line of floppy stuffed animals with cute names and charming poems, he unleashed pure havoc and chaos into the world. At the height of Beanie Mania, people spent their life savings and even assaulted others to collect the rare creatures like Patti the Platypus and Ziggy the Zebra before they “retired”. When the dust settled, fortunes were lost, limbs were broken and Ty (as in, TY INC.), was left holding the big, floppy bag. Yes it's true: we are both former (and possibly current?) obsessed Beanie Baby collectors, and we had a hilarious time reminiscing while watching the Max documentary “Beanie Mania” (and a boring time watching the Apple TV+ movie “The Beanie Bubble”).
Mullets. Skinny jeans. Crocs. Many of us can recall trends that we've jumped on, only to see those trends become passé soon after. But the fear of missing out can snowball into heavier consequences. In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at how speculation and rapidly growing trends, however niche, can cloud people's judgment. A tight knit group of friends in Chicago start buying stuffed animals from a little-known toymaker, called Ty Warner, for their kids. The friends' enthusiasm for the toys is contagious, and soon the demand for these cute stuffed animals, called Beanie Babies, is growing so quickly that people are treating them as investments. People are lining up for hours to get their hands on the newest releases. Parents are using their kids' college funds to collect Beanie Babies. Collectors are buying secondhand Beanie Babies for thousands of dollars. Filmmaker Yemisi Brookes tells the story of how a group of moms launched an unassuming stuffed toy to unexpected highs—and lows.Yemisi Brookes is the director of the documentary Beanie Mania, available on HBO. Next, Katy speaks with Robert Cialdini about his research that shows while humans are influenced by what a majority of people are doing, humans pay special attention to trends that are growing, even if it begins with just a small fraction of the population. You can read more in the paper he co-authored with Chad R. Mortensen and Rebecca Neal called "Trending Norms: A Lever for Encouraging Behaviors Performed by the Minority."Robert Cialdini is the Arizona State University Regents' Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Marketing and the best-selling author of several books including the mega-bestseller, Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion. Admit it, you have an attic full of Beanie Babies and you hope to one day rule the world with the enormous amount of money you're going to get when you sell them. Right? This week we discuss HBO Max's new documentary about the Beanie Babies craze of the 90s and learn that if you're ever offered $100,000 for a collection of stuffed animals, you should immediately accept or be stuck with thousands of little toys that are totally worthless 30 years later. Also, we extend a request for a million dollars from Elon Musk in the hopes he has it just laying around the house and is looking for someone to give it to. Today we realize we spoke to soon about some of our predictions or hopes for 2022. We're off to a rocky start. But that's ok. Onward and upward? Susie discusses the Beanie Baby phenomenon of the 1990s, and why it reminds her of the MLMs that attract suburban, white women. We talk about a scandal at a fruitcake company where an employee stole $17M, and got rich off of fruitcake money. Susie describes a show on HBO that made her think about reality tv in a new way. We hear why the real estate "love letters" people write to convince a home owner to sell to them might be perpetuating discrimination. We get a brief history of fake snow, and hear why cereal used to be a substitute for snow. Plus, Sarah tries to get Susie to watch Interstellar again. Ladies and gentlemen... Colin!
If there was one toy craze that embodied the 1990s it would be Beanie Babies. These small, under stuffed, adorable plush animals worked America into a frenzy as seemingly the entire country was fixated on collecting them. Beanie Mania spawned books, websites, fan clubs and an iconic McDonalds Happy Meal promotion. While the toys aren't worth much these days, the memories they created totally are! On this episode we'll walk down memory lane with our listeners as they call in to “talk TY” and reminisce about hunting for Beanies!
