We hear from food writer Grace Dent about her new book, Comfort Eating, inspired by her podcast of the same name. She'll explain why she's so fascinated by the foods to make us feel better behind closed doors. The Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat's latest work is called The Fury. It is a short film and series of photographs which explore the sexual exploitation of female political prisoners in Iran. Shirin left Iran as a teenager to study in the US and has lived in exile there since the 1990s. Her art is known for posing questions about how the female body is perceived within Islam and Iranian culture. She talks to Anita Rani about bringing The Fury to London and why she has chosen to deviate from her usual style and include the nude form. Gloria Daniel is the descendant of John Isaac Daniel, who was a slave. After finding out more about her family history and the lives of her ancestor, as well as other slaves, she has started the organisation TTEACH (Transatlantic Trafficked Enslaved African Corrective Historical) Plaques. She joins Anita to tell us about the exhibition they are currently holding which includes the testimonies and artwork of women. Mei Mac is an Olivier award nominee who has taken on the lead role of Kim in the ‘untitled f*ck m*ss s**gon play' at the Young Vic. The play tackles over a century's worth of stereotypes about Asian women in drama, parodying Madame Butterfly, Miss Saigon and South Pacific. Mei tells Anita about confronting prejudice in theatre, 'the bamboo ceiling' and why she has set up a mentorship scheme for British East Asian and South East Asian actors. Shortlisted for the Independent Podcast Awards 2023. In this episode I look back at how Iranians have made use of art in the 2022 uprising to undermine the hardline fundamentalist regime that has held power there since 1979. Women in particular have had their rights repressed and their bodies controlled. Within Iran artists have been creating work which is critical of the regime, sharing it widely to inspire others to join the fight or to keep going. Artists in the Iranian diaspora have also been important for raising awareness of the human rights abuses taking place, and for keeping the protests in the public eye in the West, including the high-profile American-Iranian artist Shirin Neshat. The Gallery Companion is hosted by writer and historian Dr Victoria Powell. Today we are visiting with the one and only Shirin Neshat, who hardly needs introduction. If you've ever taken an art history class that covers video art, photography, international cinema, or for that matter contemporary opera, you've definitely seen Shirin's work. Since her debut exhibition in 1993 at Franklin Furnace, Shirn's work has offered a deeply personal yet universal perspective on womanhood, power, corruption, trauma, and the female body as the battleground of social and political manipulation. All of this in Shirin's work is of course informed very much by her experience as an Iranian immigrant, who moved to the US at age seventeen just prior to the revolution, and since then has lived ostensibly in exile. These themes in her work however are quite universal, which is something Shirin spoke to expensively in our chat when we discussed her latest work which just so happens to be on view as we speak. Her latest exhibition at Gladstone Gallery titled The Fury is on view until March 4th, you've got a whole month to check it out, and this show features new works including a photo series and a large video installation in Shirin's signature black and white with two channels of video on opposite walls, that harkens all the way back to her iconic 1998 video installation Turbulent. We discuss all this and more in our chat, as well as Shirin's perspective on the ongoing protests and movement in Iran sparked by the death of Masha Amini — which of course is deeply related to the themes that have been present in Shirin's work for decades.Today's episode, and the many more artist interviews coming your way this year was made possible thanks to generous support from wonderful folks at the Kramlich Art Foundation.Links from the conversation with Shirin> The Fury: https://www.gladstonegallery.com/exhibition/10596/the-fury/installation-views Get access to exlusive content - join us on Patreon!> https://patreon.com/artobsolescenceJoin the conversation:https://www.instagram.com/artobsolescence/Support artistsArt and Obsolescence is a non-profit podcast, sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts, and we are committed to equitably supporting artists that come on the show. Shirin Neshat is the world's foremost Iranian-born artist. Best known for her black and white portraits of veiled women, often with hands and faces overlain with intricate Farsi calligraphy, she works primarily as a photographer and filmmaker. A winner of one of the biggest international arts prizes, the Praemium Imperiale, she has shown art in galleries all round the world - except in Iran, as she has lived in exile in America since 1996. As human rights protests continued in Iran, a huge artwork by Shirin, called Women Life Freedom, was shown on billboards at London's Piccadilly Circus where a rally was staged in support of Iranian protesters. Shirin Neshat tells John Wilson about her upbringing in an artistic, liberal family who lived amidst the conservative and religious Iranian city of Qazvin. She recalls how she was studying art at the University of California, Berkeley, when the Islamic Revolution took place in 1979. With new restrictions imposed on women, including the mandatory veil, she decided to remain in America. Returning to Iran for the first time in 1990, she was shocked by the changes and began to make artworks in response, primarily exploring the theme of power and oppression in two series of works entitled Unveiling and Women Of Allah. Shirin also reveals the huge influence on her work of the Iranian poet and filmmaker Forugh Farrokhzad, who was killed in a car accident in 1967 aged just 32.

Neil Koenig, ex BBC producer and current ideaXme board advisor and guest interviewer, interviews Mohammed Afkhami, philanthropist and art collector. If asked to name a country associated with modern art, few people today might think of Iran. The collector Mohammed Afkhami is working hard to change that perception. In this age that we are in now anything that promotes misunderstood or unknown cultures is a plus. In recent years he has amassed a large collection of Iranian art. Mr Afkhami says his love of art began at an early age: “we used to visit my grandfather's house multiple times a week, and he collected Islamic art and antiquities, Western artworks, Japanese lacquer…it was a fascinating and enchanting house of treasures”. He left Iran as a young child, after the revolution at the end of the 1970s. After embarking on a successful career in finance, he eventually returned in the early 2000s. “It felt like coming home” he explains. Mohammed Afkhami was surprised and delighted by the quality of contemporary art available, even though there were only a small number of galleries open at the time in Tehran. He bought works by Sirak Melkonian and Massoud Arabshahi for around $500 apiece. Since then, the collection has grown to include works by artists such as Shirin Neshat, Monir Farmanfarmaian, Parviz Tanavoli, Abbas Kiarostami and many more. What is the art scene like in Iran today? According to Mr Afkhami it is thriving, despite the impact of sanctions. There are now hundreds of galleries in Tehran, he says: “an artist is lucky to have a show that lasts longer than a month, because there's such a backlog of artists wanting to exhibit”. In an interview with me for ideaXme, Mohammed Afkhami talks about his passion for his country's art, how he built his collection and how he works with artists and galleries, and how art can serve to broaden understanding and break down cultural barriers. “Rebel, Jester, Mystic, Poet: Contemporary Persians—The Mohammed Afkhami Collection”, can be seen at the Asia Society in New York until May 2022. Drawing from the collection of financier and philanthropist Mohammed Afkhami, the exhibition comprises paintings, sculptures, photographs, and videos. Of the 23 participating artists, over a third live in Iran, over a third live outside of Iran, and five live in New York City. These established, mid-career, and emerging artists are working from unique vantage points, informed by a rich cultural heritage as well as more recent extensive social and political unrest in Iran. Referencing “contemporary Persians,” the exhibition's title evokes an ancient culture that is still very much alive today. The curator of the exhibition is Dr. Fereshteh Daftari. In today's episode, we bring you special events around two of our recent hit films – CHESS OF THE WIND and HIVE. First up, we were honored to have the renowned Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat join us to introduce a screening of Mohammad Reza Aslani's sumptuous, long-lost 1976 melodrama CHESS OF THE WIND on Sunday, November 7. Here she's introduced by Bruce Goldstein, Film Forum's Director of Repertory Programming. In the second segment: the opening night Q&A for Blerta Basholli's HIVE from November 5. HIVE is an engrossing drama about a young widow overcoming tragic and oppressive circumstances in post-war Kosova, based on a true story. Popular Kosovan actress Yllka Gashi gives a fabulous, steely lead performance in the film, which was awarded the Grand Jury Prize, Audience Award and Directing Award in World Cinema Competition at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. We were fortunate to have both Basholli and Gashi join us for the Q&A, which was moderated by Vox film critic Alissa Wilkinson. The event was co-presented by the Albanian Institute New York. Special thanks to Shirin Neshat, Janus Films, Blerta Basholli, Yllka Gashi, Alissa Wilkinson, Dino Korca and Jordin Rubio at the Albanian Institute New York, Sara Sampson, Josh Haroutunian, and Zeitgeist Films for making these events possible. Our runs of both CHESS OF THE WIND and HIVE have been held over. Check www.filmforum.org for showtimes and tickets. Shirin Neshat photo (left) by Michael Dalton. As we in the West become more conscious of inequalities that have been part of our societal fabric for a long time, we're becoming less sure of our identities. If art is a window on the soul of a nation, what does ours look like? Who do we think we are in the sense of identity? What's our mood? Of course, these are questions without answers or, at least, unique answers. Shirin Neshat, an acclaimed Iranian visual artist, and Jonathan Burnham at HarperCollins, discuss our evolving zeitgeist.
