What happens when a voice emerges? What happens when one is lost? Is something gained? A couple months ago, Lulu guest edited an issue of the nature magazine Orion. She called the issue “Queer Planet: A Celebration of Biodiversity,” and it was a wide-ranging celebration of queerness in nature. It featured work by amazing writers like Ocean Vuong, Kristen Arnett, Carmen Maria Machado and adrienne maree brown, among many others. But one piece in particular struck Lulu as something that was really meant to be made into audio, an essay called “Key Changes,” by the writer Sabrina Imbler. If their name sounds familiar, it might be because they've been on the show before. In this episode, we bring you Sabrina's essay – which takes us from the beginning of time, to a field of crickets, to a karaoke bar – read by the phenomenal actor Becca Blackwell, and scored by our director of sound design Dylan Keefe. Stay to the end for a special surprise … from Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls!Special thanks to Jay Gallagher from UC Davis.EPISODE CREDITS: Reported by - Sabrina ImblerProduced by - Annie McEwen and Pat Walterswith help from - Maria Paz GutiérrezOriginal music from - Dylan KeefeFact-checking by - Kim Schmidtand Edited by - Tajja Isen and Pat WaltersEPISODE CITATIONS:Articles - Check out Queer Planet: A Celebration of Biodiversity, Orion Magazine (Spring 2025)Read Sabrina Imbler's original essay, “Key Changes,” Orion Magazine (Spring 2025)Read Lulu Miller's mini-essay, “Astonishing Immobility,” Orion Magazine (Spring 2025)Check out Sabrina Imbler's Defector column Creaturefector all about animalsAudio - Listen to Amy Ray's song “Chuck Will's Widow” from her solo album If It All Goes SouthBooks - How Far the Light Reaches: A Life in Ten Sea Creatures, by Sabrina ImblerSignup for our newsletter!! Host Meg Wolitzer presents two stories that reflect on the beauty and vulnerability of the natural world. In “Joyas Voladoras,” by Brian Doyle, we hear the many different heartbeats of the natural kingdom. The reader is Becca Blackwell. And a talking fox has a lot to tell us about reading aloud, shopping malls, and fried chicken “Fox 8,” a darkly funny fable by George Saunders read by John Cameron Mitchell. And we're joined by the mother/daughter book club we've featured on a couple of earlier episodes, which discusses “Fox 8,” at the end of the show.
SELECTED SHORTS host Meg Wolitzer presents four works that were presented as part of our live evening with WNYC's Radiolab and hosts Lulu Miller and Latif Nasser. The theme was flight in many imaginative manifestations. Randa Jarrar's “The Lunatics' Eclipse” is a fable-like story of romance and interstellar travel, read by Abubakr Ali. Our second story is “Roy Spivey,” by Miranda July, and is a sly and gentle probing of celebrity culture. It's read by Molly Bernard. Don Shea's “Jumper Down” bares the vulnerability and resilience of a rescue worker. it's read by Becca Blackwell. And our last story, “My Life as a Bat,” shares the secret life a mysterious creature in fact and fable. It's by Canadian fiction master Margaret Atwood and is read by Zach Grenier.
A selection of short flights of fact and fancy performed live on stage.Usually we tell true stories at this show, but earlier this spring we were invited to guest host a live show called Selected Shorts, a New York City institution that presents short fiction performed on stage by great actors (you'll often find Tony, Emmy and Oscars winners on their stage). We treated the evening a bit like a Radiolab episode, selecting a theme, and choosing several stories related to that theme. The stories we picked were all about “flight” in one way or another, and came from great writers like Brian Doyle, Miranda July, Don Shea and Margaret Atwood. As we traveled from the flight of a hummingbird, to an airplane seat beside a celebrity, to the mind of a bat, we found these stories pushing us past the edge of what we thought we could know, in the way that all truly great writing does.Special thanks to Abubakr Ali, Becca Blackwell, Molly Bernard, Zach Grenier, Drew Richardson, Jennifer Brennan and the whole team at Selected Shorts and Symphony Space.EPISODE CREDITS: Produced by - Maria Paz GutierrezFact-checking by - Natalie Middletonand Edited by - Pat WaltersOur newsletter comes out every Wednesday. Intimacy Coordinator Reveals How Sex Scenes Are Staged and How Actors Are Protected! From Basic Instinct to Call Me by Your Name, Coming Home to Fifty Shades of Grey, P-Valley to Outlander, sex scenes play a vital role in movies, TV shows, and plays spanning genres and subjects. Yet, as dramas and comedies increasingly reflect the reality of diversity, depicting acts of intimacy in a way that's genuine, affecting, free from entrenched stereotypes, and respectful to audiences and actors is a challenge. In The Intimacy Coordinator's Guidebook: Specialties for Stage and Screen (Routledge; April 1, 2024; Original Trade Paperback; ISBN: 978‑1‑032‑53147‑2), Brooke M. Haney reveals how intimacy coordinators use their cultural competencies and specialties in practice to create the most compelling storytelling. As Haney stresses, the job requires competency in the language of choreography - every move performed for the camera or a live audience, from a passionate kiss to a chilling assault, is meticulously choreographed, just like a dance or a fight scene - along with training in tools like modesty garments and props. In addition, an intimacy coordinator must possess excellent communication skills and the ability to read situations and respond proactively. What's more, every intimacy coordinator must find their unique lens. (For instance, some coordinators are specialists in bondage, whereas others are specialists working with minors.) The book features other intimacy coordinators' stories. It includes conversations with Olivia Luccardi (a producer and actress who played Melissa in The Deuce, the first television show to employ an intimacy coordinator), Tai Leshaun (a Black actress in Thunder Force and The Other Black Girl), Becca Blackwell (a trans actor, performer and writer), Jimmy Smits (an Emmy Award-winning Latino actor known for roles in TV dramas from NYPD Blue to Sons of Anarchy) and other Hollywood insiders who have worked on projects involving intimacy.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

But to us, it's actually everything because we're d*king out with the hilarious and entertaining Becca Blackwell (High Maintenance on HBO)! We talk about their gender and sexuality journey, as well as their relationship to labels throughout their life. What happens when we hold individual definitions for shared labels? Is it okay to disagree about what they mean? What are the spaces we create for our identities and who can occupy them? Can a trans masc person still be a dyke? Guest host Kate Burton presents three Russian classics that reflect on the humor, humanism, and poetry of this great literary tradition, from an evening curated by Saunders. In addition to his award-winning short-story anthologies and novel, Saunders teaches at Syracuse University. In “After the Theatre,” by Anton Chekhov, a young girl writes imaginary love letters. The reader is Donna Lynne Champlin. “The Porcelain Doll” by Leo Tolstoy is based on a letter he wrote to his young sister-in-law—about his own wife! BD Wong is the reader. Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “Bobok” may remind some of Saunders’ own Lincoln in the Bardo. A dotty civil servant overhears the conversations of the dead, who are voiced by Becca Blackwell, Peter Jay Fernandez, Santino Fontana, Zach Grenier, Ann Harada, and Peter Mark Kendall. And a special treat follows “Bobok.” Anna Dzhanaeva and Luba Lapina, members of the Moscow English Literature Club, read excerpts from “After the Theatre” and “The Porcelain Doll” in Russian. In this episode, John speaks with one of his students, Becca Blackwell, a prominent artist, and actor based in NYC. We tried something different for this episode and let the conversation take a longer format. The conversation explores a lot of different topics but has a theme of looking at some of the following ideas, such as: 1.Appreciating the majesty of the human body 2.Recognizing intentions we have hold power 3.How do we live knowing we are going to die? 4.What's the purpose of pain in our lives? We then learn a little bit more about Becca's history and what it's like to transition from female to male. *******At times the conversation gets heavy, but Becca tells plenty of Jokes for some levity.******* Let us know if you'd like more long-form conversations and remember Beta today Better tomorrow. This episode is everything and nothing, because that's where we always end up when discussing labels. But to us, it's actually everything because we're dyking out with the hilarious and entertaining Becca Blackwell (High Maintenance on HBO)! (ABSOLUTELY). Plus, we talk about the thing many of you have been asking us to talk about, even though we have previously sworn off talking about it/her/spoiler-alert-it's-Taylor-Swift. And, Melody may have finally gotten Carolyn hooked on Real Housewives drama. Finally, we end with a listener question about dealing with misogynistic gatekeepers. This is the Summer of Night Vale Presents, a celebration and sampling of some of the shows across our network. This week, we hear from two of our newest fiction shows, Pounded In The Butt By My Own Podcast and It Makes A Sound. Plus, an update on Within the Wires Season 3. Within the Wires returns on September 4. Each season tells a new story in the same world, using a single set of found audio. Season One is a prison break / romance told entirely through relaxation tapes. Season Two is the mystery of a missing woman told through a decade’s worth of museum audio guides. Season Three, coming this September, is a political thriller told through dictaphone recordings to a secretary. Pounded In The Butt By My Own Podcast is our collaboration with celebrated author Chuck Tingle. Chuck’s short stories have entertained and aroused readers across the world, and we are excited to bring his stories to life with performances by celebrity guests like Cecil Baldwin, Mara Wilson, and Becca Blackwell. Whether you’re new to the Tingleverse or have lived there for years, this is the podcast about love that you never knew you needed. It Makes A Sound is the story of a woman named Deirdre who finds a cassette tape from 1992 in her attic. What follows is a surprising story about family, memory, and music that goes places that you don’t expect. Join her quest to make Rosemary Hills come back to life with the sound of music.
