“Go no farther. There's nothing in this cave worth dying for.” Those were the words printed on the sign at the entrance of an underwater cave in Vortex Springs, Florida. Despite this plaintive warning and the drawing of the Grim Reaper that accompanied it, many divers of differing skill levels failed to heed these words in search of adventure. On August 18, 2010, 30-year-old Ben McDaniel was seen entering the water in his scuba gear. He was never seen on land again. What was at first assumed to be a tragic, yet straightforward diving accident came into question as days went by without Ben's body being found. Did Ben get deeper into the cave than anyone could have imagined? Or did someone remove him from the water before searchers could find him? Some have questioned if Ben was ever in the water at all that night, or if something completely different happened on the ground. The only thing we know for sure is that after a decade, despite an extensive search, no one knows for sure what happened to Ben McDaniel.Anyone with information on the disappearance of Ben McDaniel is urged to call the Holmes County Sheriff's Office 850-547-3681.Buy the ebook! - And Then They Were Gone: True Stories of Those Who Went Missing and Never Came HomeSubmit a caseFind us everywhereGet episodes early and ad-free on PatreonMerch storeFor a full list of our sources, please visit our blogThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5360779/advertisement

Ben McDaniel was an avid open water scuba diver. In the months leading up to his disappearance he was trying to get cave diver certified. He had recently got divorced, his brother who he was very close to died, and his construction business failed which put him in massive debt. He took some time to live at his parent's vacation home in Santa Rosa Beach, FL with his beloved dog. During this time he did many, many dives at Vortex Springs, a well known diving place with a dangerous cave you can only dive in if you have your cave diving certification. On August 18, 2010 he went for two dives in Vortex Springs and was going down to do another one when he saw some employees of the dive shop. Although Ben did not have his cave diving certification one of the employees let him through the locked gate within the cave. Two days later this employee came back to work and found that Ben's car still hadn't moved and no one had seen him.Police were called in and world famous divers came to help search for Ben's body but nothing was found, not even an indication someone had been in the cave recently. Subsequent tests showed no indication of decomposition chemicals in the water and to this day Ben has never been found. Was he murdered? Was it a terrible accident and his body is still deep within the cave? Or did he voluntarily leave his life? Also be sure to rate us 5 stars on Apple podcasts if that is where you listen. In 2010, cave diver Ben McDaniel went for an end of the day dive at Vortex Springs in Florida. Ben had done this before with no issue. What happened this day? Where is Ben?Sources can be found on our website www.truecrimeoutloud.com
Ben was obsessed with scuba diving, especially highly dangerous underwater cave diving despite not being qualified to do so. While taking a 'life gap year' following some personal crises Ben finds something beyond a passion for the hobby and starts to become fixated on mapping cave systems deeper and deeper below. When he doesn't come up one day it is assumed he has gone too far and drowned, but after extensive search efforts his body cannot be found. What happened to Ben in the Vortex cave system, and was it more sinister that a simple drowning? Tell us what you think. Sorenson began diving in 1995 and within a few years expanded to cave diving. In 1999, he joined International Underwater Cave Rescue and Recovery (IUCRR) as one of the original members and later founded Cave Adventurers in Marianna, Florida in 2003. Sorenson became a local hero in 2012 after four rescues that year and was featured in the Duracell series Quantum Heroes.[5] For his efforts in 2012, Sorenson was awarded the Diver's Alert Network Hero Award, Heroic Merit Awards and the Instructor Trainer of the Year from the Professional Scuba Association International. Due to his experience with the Vortex Spring cave system, Sorenson was involved in the 2010 search for missing diver Ben McDaniel. After an extensive search Sorenson believed that McDaniel was not trapped in the cave because of lack of evidence and disturbance to the cave commonly seen after a diver passes through. He stated, "The last place I searched was pristine, without a mark that a diver had been there. It would be impossible to go through that restriction without making a mark on the floor or ceiling. He's not in there. In February 2019 Sorenson, along with Mike Young, successfully conducted two body recoveries from Dudú Lagoon in the Dominican Republic. In April 2019 Sorenson successfully rescued Josh Bratchley, a British cave diver who assisted in the rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach from a Thai cave, from Mill Pond Cave in Flynn's Lick, Tennessee. ————————————————— Still Toking With https://www.facebook.com/TokingwiththeDead/ https://www.instagram.com/stilltokingwith/ http://www.youtube.com/c/THETOKINGDEAD https://www.twitch.tv/stilltokingwith https://www.facebook.com/HellfireRadio666/ Support Still Toking Enterprises https://www.paypal.me/thetokingdead https://www.facebook.com/groups/2658329444181663/?ref=br_rs https://www.facebook.com/groups/stilltokingcomics/ Produced by: The Dorkening Podcast Network https://TheDorkening.com Facebook.com/TheDorkening Youtube.com/TheDorkening Twitter.com/TheDorkening Instagram.com/TheDorkening Follow Hellfire Entertainment https://www.hellentertainment.com https://www.facebook.com/hellentertainment https://www.instagram.com/hellentertainment666 Find out more at https://still-toking-with.pinecast.co This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

MISSING: Ben McDaniel - Ben was a 30 year old man who was recovering from personal struggles and focusing on his well-being when he was last seen diving into a popular diving cave. Bro. Ben McDaniel
When an underwater cavern popular with divers warns that nothing in the cave is worth dying for, most would turn around, but for some a thrill runs down their spine. With only one way in and one way out, what could have happened to an experienced diver to make him never reemerge from the cave’s depths? Was it bad luck, fate, or perhaps something more sinister?
Ben’s Vortex Investigative Documentary Film: www.vimeo.com/ondemand/bensvortex Jill and Robert discuss the renewed interest in the cold case of missing scuba diver Ben McDaniel. Was it an accident? A hoax? Or murder? Almost a decade after he entered Vortex Spring in Florida, there are still amateur sleuths and open source investigations looking into Ben’s disappearance on podcasts, YouTube videos and blogs.
When a scuba enthusiast embarks on a perilous cave dive alone and fails to return, it’s initially assumed that “the vortex” has claimed another victim. However, lack of a body and suspicious circumstances force authorities to consider other possibilities, including foul play, in this episode of Last Seen Alive.
In Episode 94, Mario talks about another unsolved serial killer, the Volga Maniac who was active in the Volga and Ural regions of Russia in 2012-2013 and may be active again. August 18, 2010. Vortex Spring, Florida. Thirty year old Ben McDaniel went scuba diving at Vortex Spring. The spring features a cave that has been mapped to a length of over 1600 feet but is said to be longer than that. Ben should not have been in the cave as only divers with the necessary certification can acquire a key to get past the gate, but after he was discovered to be missing an employee admitted to letting him in. Ben did dive in with his equipment but never came out. At least, no one witnessed him leaving. His truck and some of his possessions remained in his truck that was parked in the lot nearby. Rescue attempts were made but as time went on, some began to doubt that Ben was in the cave. Did Ben fool everyone to start over somewhere else? In the two years prior, he had several substantial setbacks. Could he have taken his own life? Could there have been foul play? A real life mystery, Ben McDaniel's disappearance has everyone wondering, where did he really go?Sponsor:FabFitFun.com and use code WHY for $10 off your first seasonal box.

On August 18, 2010 a 30 year old scuba diver went for a night dive in the underwater caves at Vortex Springs in Ponce De Leon, Florida and was never seen again. Extensive searches of the caves (which go over 115ft deep) by at least 16 professional recovery divers yielded absolutely no sign of the man, and have left many questions over the years about what happened to him. Did he get trapped underwater? Run out of oxygen? Was he really down in those caves when he disappeared, or did something else happen to him that night in 2010? Today a ditty I like to play on the piano, thoughts on force, and an a cappella arrangement of “Make Our Garden Grow”, written by Richard Wilbur (text) and Leonard Bernstein (music).
