We hear so much about inclusivity these days, but not usually when it comes to our mountain bike trails. Turns out, it's not that hard to make our trails more accessible to a wider range of riders, letting all of your friends enjoy the same awesome experience you and I enjoy every time we hit the singletrack. Besides the warm fuzzies, there's often good money and resources available to help make it happen, too! My guests today are Nick Bennett and Greg Durso, two of the riders and trail builders leading Vermont's charge to make more of their hundreds of miles of singletrack accessible to adaptive riders. I've ridden some of these trails, and they're awesome. But what makes them super rad is that every rider can enjoy them, and trust me, they are not watered down in any way. If you've ever wondered what it would take to make your local trails adaptive bike friendly, or what it's like to experience a trail from their perspective, this episode is for you. Be sure to check the links in this episode's show notes at Bikerumor.com/podcast for resources and their instagram profiles to see the bikes and trails in action. WANT MORE? If cycling is anything, it's insular. There is a real reason for this. To be successful in the cycling business, a genuine passion for the sport is required.Nowhere is this more true than in cycling media.Cyclists that consume this media can smell if you are coming from a place of honesty or not. Cycling, especially road cycling, is really a niche sport. Therefore to be part of this community you have to speak the language. No poseurs allowed! I spoke recently with Bikerumor founder Tyler Benedict about how this passion was the recipe for success of Bike Rumor. We spoke about the meteoric rise of the popular cycling tech blog, his decision to sell the business, and the current state of cycling media.Read the latest 'The Business of Cycling' BlogSign up for 'The Business of Cycling' Newsletter

Bike Club NFT has those now-ubiquitous three letters in its name: NFT. That might be enough to scare many readers off, but don't worry, it's not all as scary as it seems.NFTs seem to have swept into the mainstream overnight, yet the vast majority of us are still pretty unclear on what the heck an NFT is.NFT=non-fungible token. As it happened, I made a last minute trip to Bentonville for the launch of Fezzari's new Signal Peak XC mountain bike. Which happened to coincide with Outerbike and the Big Sugar gravel race. And since I don't like having any downtime whatsoever, I squeezed in an interview with Gary Vernon, who I'll sum up as the orchestrator of all things bike advocacy and infrastructure in Bentonville, Arkansas. If you haven't been to Bentonville to ride, all I can say is this: When you finally do go, and I do mean WHEN, not IF, your mind will absolutely be blown. Talking about bike lanes and access and trails is one thing. But seeing how they've made it an integral part of their entire community and city planning is honestly beyond words. But that doesn't mean we can't try, so if you're at all involved in your city's planning, or your local bike advocacy group, or you just want to hear what's possible and get inspired to make cycling better in your own community, this episode will absolutely open your eyes to what's possible. What's up Bikerumor fans! Today, I'm speaking with the founders of Reddiyo, a smart training app that uses your workout data and performance to algorithmically determine your next workout. It's an interesting concept not just because it uses data from the workouts you do on the app, but also your past recorded workouts to get you up and running with an effective program from day one. In this episode, we talk about how they started, some of the technical challenges and opportunities in creating the app, plus a bit about the actual business of creating a subscription based app. We wrap up with a look at features to come and some pie in the sky thinking on future features. I love hearing the startup stories of bike brands because almost every one of them is a pure passion play. They're started by riders who wanted to do something on their own and saw a gap in the market, then took the leap to create something cool. Reddiyo's founders not only took a leap of faith, but they went into a category that has some steep competition. But, after using it, I'd say they've managed to create something both interesting and useful, particularly if your focus is more on getting stronger and faster than on just entertaining yourself on the trainer. If you'd like to try it yourself, you can use promo code BIKERUMOR30 to more than double your free trial period from 14 days to a full 30 days! Here's to a training smarter not harder. Wondering how the Coronavirus will affect your heart? Whether you should ride while you're infected with COVID-19? What the long term health effects are as a cyclist? How long it takes to recover from the virus? We answer all those questions and more in this episode, with special guests Dr. Rand McClain and Trey Richardson. Dr. McClain is chief medical officer and heart health expert at LCR Health. Trey is a Bikerumor contributor and cycling industry veteran who has extensive experience and training in physical therapy and high level competition. Together, they share their real world experience (Trey was infected and had thorough testing done) and medical knowledge about how COVID-19 affects a cyclist's heart, lungs, and body...and why you need to be especially careful when resuming exercise to ensure you don't do long term damage to your organs! For the full show notes, including a list of tests and followup checks that Dr. McClain recommends every athlete gets following a Coronavirus infection, check out the full post at http://bikerumor.com/podcast and click on this episode.

We deal with PR agencies and PR people all the time over on my cycling tech blog, Bikerumor.com. Some are great, others could use a little help. And we see a mix of brands small and large, new and established, choose to work with a PR agency all the time, with mixed results. To say there's a lot of bouncing from firm to firm would be an undestatement. So I reached out to Verde Brand Communications' founder Kristin Carpenter to learn more about how a company should work with a PR firm, what they can expect, and how they can get the most out of it. If you're a brand interested in hiring a PR agency to promote your brand, craft your message, and help get it in front of the media and consumers, this episode will give you a LOT to think about! KEY TAKEAWAYS Two of the biggest takeaways are that you need to have realistic expectations, and you need to communicate with the agency. Regarding communication, it's critical that the brand keep the agency aware of product launch dates, delays and other timing issues. Why? Because if a launch is going to be late, it's better to know ahead of time and push the promotional push back, too. Another thing to consider is where they're getting your coverage. Sure, getting on Oprah or the Today Show might be huge awareness wins, but they may not move the sales needle if those shows aren't targeted to your customer base. Regarding retainers and pricing, one thing I'd personally recommend is weighing the option of hiring someone in-house full time (or part time) versus an outside agency. Pros include having someone there day in, day out that can ensure your PR efforts are deeply integrated into everything else your brand is doing, from sales to marketing to production and scheduling. It also gives media a direct point of contact that (usually) knows most of the technical questions. Cons might be that the person lacks the direct communication lines that a good, established PR firm already has with media and key editors. That list can take a long time to curate, as do the relationships. Thanks for tuning in. If you like this, could you share a link to it with a friend? Tyler Benedict, founder and publisher of Bikerumor.com, is my guest this week on Channel Mastery. Eleven-plus years ago, Tyler started Bikerumor.com and during that time, he's seen a lot of evolution in terms of how consumers use and share his content, and how his site factors into the consumer decision journey. In this episode, Tyler gives his well informed take on what's working, and what's not, with endemic content today. You'll learn how his team approaches and optimizes content across multiple channels, including the Bikerumor.com website, blog, Youtube channel, newsletter, podcast, and through events. We also talk about the ongoing evolution of the media landscape as well as how brands can best serve super busy media covering events like Sea Otter and Outerbike. I'm fairly certain that Tyler is one of the hardest-working journalists in cycling today, and he keeps pushing into new frontiers. Check out his upcoming Peak Content Summit, a gathering of some of the brightest minds in content marketing today taking place in Ashville, NC., March 11-13, 2020.
Canadian builder Danielle Schön is all about growth. Like her colleague and hero, Julie Ann Pedalino, Danielle Schön of Schön Studio is a skill hoarder - she's always looking for new things to learn, master, and add to her evolving toolkit. But where Pedalino's path has lead her to computer aided design and CNC machining to realize her creative vision, Schön has skewed more visceral. Her constant need for growth and personal development has helped her to build an impressive portfolio of work and technical chops - which she will discuss in detail in the podcast. As a builder, the exciting thing for me is how she is a top notch fabricator first. Like other builders in this series, because she comes from outside the craft, Schön is freed from the dominant narratives and traditions around what a bike should be. As a result, Schön's solutions and construction can take unexpected and delightful turns. She deeply understands the opportunity of her material and her process - that is her guide. Check out the full post on Bikerumor.com for gorgeous photos of Schön's custom bicycles! GET MORE BIKERUMOR PODCAST ACTION! Amongst framebuilders, there are those that other frame builders look up to for inspiration, and gaze upon with admiration. While relatively young in the game, Julie Ann Pedalino's intricate and artful designs truly take bicycle construction to a new level. They're equal parts fun and function, with some absolutely mind-blowing details. And attention to detail. Pivot founder Chris Cocalis has some strong opinions about mountain bike design, and it shows through in the tight tolerances and high precision construction of his bikes. But how and why does he love pressfit bottom brackets so much when they're the bane of many riders' existences? Why does he thing we should be riding smaller frames? In this episode, Tyler sits down with multi-time EWS world champion Jerome Clementzto discuss how he and other top pro riders were instrumental in testing and designing the new Zipp 3ZERO MOTO mountain bike wheels. We dive deep, and Jerome doesn't miss a beat explaining the entire testing process, what worked and what didn't, and how the entire test program works to ensure Zipp ended up with a wheel that would withstand a season of World Cup level racing, but still be comfortable and practical for everyday riders like us. There's just a bit of static here and there, but bear with us, the interview's worth it. We also discuss the mindset required to race, how he trained to stay at the top, and why he retired from enduro racing. Watts had the week off, so Zach joined Tyler to discuss how we test products at Bikerumor, what we're thinking when we head into a product launch, and other aspects of reviewing new components. Lastly, we talk about why single-wall fat bike rims aren't really the same as what Zipp launched. WATCH THIS INTERVIEW ON YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/jFYa1gGhjuM ------------------------------------------------------------------------- After almost a decade in the sports and energy drink industry, Tyler Benedict turned his passion for travel, bicycles and tech into Bikerumor.com, the world's largest, most popular cycling tech blog. Now, he's taking the lessons learned and his global connection to brands large and small to inspire entrepreneurs to launch their startup with The Build Cycle On this episode we talk about. Key mistakes and lessons: - Didn’t do the RIGHT kind of market research and had no idea how the sales channels worked - Trusted the wrong people, from distributors to sales people to accountants - Spent money foolishly - Didn’t get good (or any) advice - Assumed consumers and buyers cared about the wrong things - Product wasn’t different enough Subscribe to our medium page: physicalproductbusiness.com/ Subscribe on iTunes: itunes.apple.com/podcast/physical…ess/id1181834388 Subscribe on SoundCloud: @physicalproductbusiness VITAMINSUPPLEMENTcyclingenergy drinkgatoradeentrepreneurfailuresuccessLearningmountain biketyer benedict
For our first ever Build Cycle podcast, I interview Marc Basiliere of Lindarets. Marc started in adventure project management before launching his own cycling review site, then started writing for me at Bikerumor.com and ultimately ended up contributing to Singletrack UK. During which he held down a full time job at the DOE, but all the while was paying careful attention to the ways people were hacking their mountain bikes to make them work better. Finally, he launched Lindarets to do something about it, using his design engineering background to create small components and fixes for common upgrades and hacks. We talk about how his educational and work background laid the foundation for Lindarets, how and why he launched it, and the steps taken to go from idea to finished product out in the market (and on the trail). These business lessons are invaluable for any entrepreneur looking to startup a small product business, particularly if their strengths lie in concept and design and they're looking to outsource production. May 12, 2014 - This show is filled with a lot of tire talk. Ardents, is bigger better, and is there a place for midsized tires for road, dirt, and trails. Plus, the usual banter and Matt's f-bombs. Should you go with wider tires on a cross bike or just go with your mountain bike with some skinnier tires? You'll get some good info and tips as usual. And....find out what they think of Cjell Money's homemade 29+ Tour Divide bike. Did you read the Bikerumor article by Osmo about gels? They did.
