I'll Call You Right Back

This week, I sit down with life long rider and bicycle advocate Michael Potoczny to talk all about living a life on two wheels. Most of yinz know Mike from The Wheel Mill and seeing him at Bike PGH events around the city. Mike is an educator whose passion for biking exceeds many others. - Having a father who was a Pro Motocross rider, the Potoczny kids had an early and easy introduction to a life of flying off of carefully constructed mounds of dirt on two wheels. That's how they spent their childhood. Riding bikes and building dirt jumps in the woods with their friends. - Once they were old enough, they started to make the transition from the woods at home to B-Cubed Bike and Skate Park. After countless hours spent there, B-Cubed decided to close their doors. Knowing about all materials in jeopardy of going to waste, Mike and his friends decided to acquire the ramps and set out on a new location for them. - In 2013, Mike met a man and helped bring The Wheel Mill to life. For the better part of the last decade, Mike was the GM of Pittsburghs only Indoor Bike Park. He spent his time building ramps, hosting and planning events, teaching classes, and helping provide the city of Pittsburgh with one of the best biking resources to this day. Sadly and abruptly, after 11 years, The Wheel Mill decided to close their doors. - Now, after investing countless hours of hard work and thousands of dollars worth of wood into some of the best ramps made, Mike knew he had to pivot and figure out a new home for TBA Bike Park and all the bike riders around our city. Hope yinz enjoy it! - Yinz can SUBSCRIBE & WATCH here! - Become a "friend" on Patreon and support the show

But over the last few years, spring, summer and fall have been really healthy seasons for us,” said Pocahontas County CVB Executive Director Chelsea Faulknier. This increase in spring, summer and fall tourism has been particularly facilitated by the CVB's efforts to increase the quality of its biking trails. Snowshoe's Bike Park brings in thousands of guests annually to events like the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. Shavers Lake at Snowshoe is also a prime location for swimming and paddleboarding, while the rest of the resort is a destination for horseback and side-by-side tours, as well as the 4848 Music Festival. Other summertime attractions in Pocahontas County include the Cass Scenic Railroad, the Green Bank Observatory, the Greenbrier River and the Allegheny Trail. Rhett Jones is a high school mountain biker living in the Austin, Texas area. He's the founder of Station Bike Park, a new private park he developed on 150 acres of former ranchland northwest of Austin. Singletracks first shared Jones' story in a November feature article on our website; this interview adds more detail and dives into the economic and operational aspects of running a for-profit, private mountain bike park. How long have you been riding mountain bikes?  Tell us about the free bike, public bike park you built in 2022. How did that get started?   Are there many places to mountain bike in and around Austin, TX? What is the mountain bike scene like in the area? In the state? How much money did you raise, and how did you raise it? Were you able to stay on budget? Are bike parks good businesses? Were you able to use any successful bike parks as an example? How do most bike parks actually make money: tickets, rentals, repairs, or sales?  Was getting insurance a challenge?  Is there a benefit to being close to a more established bike park like Spider Mountain Bike Park? What are the economics of a fixed lift system? Is the cost feasible for the average bike park? What's your favorite part of owning a bike park? What are your plans for the bike park and for yourself in the future? Find out more at stationmountain.com. Highland Bike Park was once known as Highland Ski Area which operated between 1968-1995 before closing due to mountain debts and dysfunction. In 2003, when the opportunity to buy the defunct ski resort coincided with the sale of his family's fiber optic business, owner and founder Mark Hayes purchased the mountain. In an effort to preserve the place's history and community, he  created Highland Bike Park–same mountain, same name, new purpose. At the risk of sounding too bold, Hayes set out to create “America's Bike Park,” and for a long while it was the only exclusively biking lift-accessed area in the country. Hayes grew up mountain biking in the 1990s and after seeing Whistler Moutnain's bike park in British Columbia, he realized we needed something similar in the US. What set Whistler's bike park apart from other mountain bike systems was their intentionally engineered trails, with machine built berms, drops, and features to create “flow.” This design and execution took capital investment, design, and skilled labor to create. Hayes was prepared to support and invest in a project of this scale at Highland. What is Highland Bike Park's Model?Mountain Bike Park: Highland is the only 100% bike-dedicated, lift-access mountain bike park on the East Coast. When to call it quits for the day? Any crash that involves hitting your head – err on the side of caution and call it a day. Adrenaline can mask any potential injury, and physical symptoms may not immediately present themselves until hours later.Be sure to learn to listen to your gut, and what you inner monologue is telling you – even if you haven't had a telltale ride-ending crash, if your gut is telling you that it's time to stop/slow down/take a break, it's important to listen to that. It's easy to fall victim to social pressures to “send it” and keep riding, but take small inventories of your comfort level as you advance your skills, and never second-guess the feeling that you need to sit out and call it a day. Racing! How do I get into it?Amateur/beginner categories exist in lots of major regional races. Many races involve the use of a separate race line from higher categories that are designed for amateur or beginner racers. Reach out to nearbly bike parks about what local races they might offer (ie, weekly local race leagues).Skills Clinics at bike parks are a great way to advance your skills with direct oversight and instruction from a professional. Receiving instant feedback from professionals on how to adjust your riding style or how to approach a feature is invaluable insight on how to advance your riding skills. Clinics and lessons are a great way to level up your skills and can be specific to your personal goals as you advance.Crashes WILL happen, and that's ok! Crashing doesn't make you a “bad” rider. Try to find one key takeaway from every ride, regardless of if you think it was a good/great/bad/mediocre ride. Every ride gives an opportunity for self-reflection. Advancing your skills in mountain biking will involve testing limits, and try not to fall into being overly critical of yourself as you learn new skills. Record your rides – it's a great way to review and evaluate your rides as you tackle new trails or features. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/womensmtbnetwork/support

As a kid I started building trails and jumps in my backyard. These early projects laid the foundation to go on and help build the world-renowned BMX trails, NAM and Catty Woods. Although NAM is long gone, Catty Woods still attracts riders from around the world. Bringing together like-minded individuals over the shared passion of cycling cemented my lifelong mission to construct facilities for other riders to enjoy. After providing years of unincorporated build services across the nation, I formally established DirtSculpt in 2009. Since then, it has been an amazing experience working with organizations, local governments, and corporations from around the world to cultivate cycling experiences for all to enjoy. The DirtSculpt Crew is comprised of professional riders that transcend multiple riding styles. I couldn't be more stoked to have their input when designing and constructing a new build or redesign. Do you have the patience to get a bike park started in your area? How about 6 years of patience! Joe Lodato did, barely! The story you will hear in this podcast talks about the difficulty and the reward of persistence. Joe talks at length about how to make the dream happen and the challenges along the way...and why you should never send an email or message that was written under stress for at least a day after you write it ;) Congratulations Joe, the non-profit C.L.I.M.B. organization and all of the volunteers for a job well done in building a BMX park that will last for years to come!
