Bill Engvall was at the grind of standup for 40 years when he decided to put the mic back in the stand for the last time…that is until now. Bill talks to me about what influenced his decision to stop touring, and then to start back again; how jokes about his real life are better than being “edgy”; the enormity of being part of the “Blue Collar Comedy Tour,” and how being a grandfather is the best revenge on his well-adjusted children. Imagine turning a life-altering event like a divorce into an opportunity for reinvention. Corey did just that, boldly stepping onto the stage for his first-ever one-man show without any prior experience. His fearless leap into comedy not only led to a successful debut but also caught the attention of influencers from New York's Caroline Comedy Club. However, it wasn't all smooth sailing—Corey reflects on the humbling experiences of witnessing fellow comedians bomb on stage, teaching him resilience and the importance of maintaining confidence in the face of potential failure. With 13 years in the industry, Corey offers insights into the hard-won lessons that have shaped his comedic career. From being inspired by legends like Bill Cosby, Dave Chappelle, and Eddie Murphy, Corey's journey has evolved from stand-up to exciting new ventures in writing. He shares how the storytelling finesse of these iconic figures and shows like Comic Relief and the Blue Collar Comedy Tour have influenced his comedic style. Transitioning from the stage to creative writing, Corey explores opportunities in script punch-ups and even ventures into crafting horror and metaverse-themed comic book series. We also discuss practical tips for aspiring comedians and the significance of embracing one's unique voice. Chaz and AJ will welcome the O Gees to the Toy Drive stage once again this year. Not quite the Bee Gees, as AJ, Scot Haney and Tribe member Andre all do their best to mimic the high notes and harmonies, to varying degrees of success. (0:00) Would you call this man a hero? Chaz and AJ were in disagreement this morning, split over whether or not the term "hero" was fitting for a crane operator, who is credited with saving a man's life. (6:41) Samantha Cole was in studio with Chaz and AJ to talk about her career as a recording artist, starting as a teenager and working with Shaggy on one of his biggest hits. Plus, her Christmas song, and the time she was introduced to Mick Jagger. (15:27) For the first time in history, Amity Pop Warner has four teams going to nationals. Coach Tom Fatone was on the phone with Chaz and AJ to talk about the cheerleading teams, and football team that are all invited to big competitions in Florida. (27:23) Comedian Bill Engvall announced recently his decision to retire from standup comedy touring. He was on with Chaz and AJ to talk about the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, and the "stupid money" it would take to get him back on the road. (32:52)

Sugarbakers will do anything to get the client, even if it means swilling beer, smoking stogies, and wearing someone else's shoes. That's right, the ladies go toe-to-toe with an all-male design firm in an epic showdown to see who's got the balls to win the bid on a bowling alley renovation (bowling balls, sheesh, people, get your mind out of the gutter). Anyways, girls rule and boys drool. Or at least we think that's the takeaway. Come back on Thursday for an “Extra Sugar”, which capitalizes on Bill Engvall's appearance in this episode to talk about the Blue Collar Comedy Tour.

This week we welcome, country music recording legend, Junior Brown! With his unique voice, more unique song writing, and even more unique double necked “Guit-Steel” guitar, there has absolutely never been ANYONE like Junior Brown. He's an American Original. Born in 1952 in Cottonwood, Arizona, Junior Brown showed an affinity for music at an early age when the family moved to a rural area of Indiana near Kirksville. In the following years, Junior began to experience Country music and remembers it as “growing up out of the ground like the crops – it was everywhere; coming out of cars, houses, gas stations and stores like the soundtrack of a story, but Country music programs on TV hadn't really come along much yet; not until the late fifties.” Discovering a guitar in his grandparent's attic, he spent the next several years woodshedding with records and the radio. Junior was also able to tap into music he couldn't hear at home which older, college aged kids were listening to. This was possible due to his father's employment at small campuses throughout the next decade as the family moved twice again. As a young boy he was able to experience the thrill of performing before live audiences, at parties, school functions even singing and playing guitar for five thousand Boy Scouts at an Andrews Air Force Base jamboree; then while still a teenager, getting the chance to sit in with Rock and Roll pioneer, Bo Diddley. Armed with this broad spectrum of influences, he began to develop a storehouse of musical chops. In the early nineties Brown and his band (including wife Tanya Rae) relocated to Texas to the active Austin music scene and landed a weekly gig at the Continental club. Having worked as a sideman for many of the Austin-based acts over the years, Junior was already well familiar with the town. His unique and entertaining combination of singing, songwriting, instrumental and production skills led to a seven record deal with Curb Records that began with “Twelve Shades of Brown” in 1993. He later released two albums on the TelArc label. There were several Grammy nods, a CMA (Country Music Association) award for “My Wife Thinks You're Dead”, movie and repeated TV appearances like Letterman, Conan, Saturday Night Live, Austin City Limits, SpongeBob, X Files, Dukes of Hazzard, Me Myself and Irene, Tresspass, Still Breathing, Blue Collar Comedy Tour 1 and 2, and more recently, Better Call Saul. And there were the Ad Campaigns; The Gap, Lee Jeans and Lipton Tea. As Junior became more well known, he began to collaborate on projects with some of his heroes. These include a duet with Ralph Stanley for which Junior received a Bluegrass Music Association Award (IBMA), a duet and video with Hank Thompson, as well as duets with video and record collaborations with the Beach Boys, George Jones, Leon McAuliffe, Ray Price, Leona Williams, Lynn Morris, Lloyd Green and Doc Watson. He even played guitar for Bob Wills' Texas Playboys in a radio commercial. Junior is currently finishing up recording on his latest album, “Deep In The Heart Of Me”. Release date is slated for Spring 2017. Junior's performance on the promotional song, “Better Call Saul” was recorded and released both as a video on AMC as well as a flexible 33 1/3rd vinyl record included in the show's box set from Season One. Junior, Tanya Rae and the band continue to tear up the highways and no doubt will be appearing in concert near you one of these days. Seeing Junior live is a definite must, so GUIT WITH IT 'cause he's AN AMERICAN ORIGINAL! For more information and tour dates, visit JuniorBrown.com.
Andrew Goldman is totally, embarrassingly unprepared for what this week's guest, comedian Ron White, discloses at the top of the interview. Spoiler ahead. Since appearing in The Blue Collar Comedy Tour, the Texas-born comedian has become one of the highest paid comedians in the world with an act that has consisted of him recounting his exploits as a hard-partying “amok-running motherfucker.” Andrew is shocked to learn that Ron quit drinking 14 months ago. So, how does a performer so associated with drinking that he never appears onstage without a tumbler full of booze navigate life and work without the hard stuff? Though Ron is one of the funniest people alive, it's an affecting hour about aging, addiction, love, divorce, and the perils of fame. Also, stick around for a lot of poop talk. Brett Thomas is kind of a poor Batman. If Batman instead of training to lift cars, watched every episode of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. That's Brett... I can't trade him in, he's too rare.
Sell-out stand up comedian, and part of the legendary Blue Collar Comedy Tour, Bill Engvall joins The Brink of Midnight Podcast. Bill Engvall is one of the most successful comedians from the last three decades and was part of the famed BLUE COLLAR COMEDY TOUR, along with Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, and Ron White. From writing and performing stories at a young age to literally building his first college stand-up stage with lightbulbs in coffee cans, Bill was born to make people crack up, however most people don't realize he was a reluctant comic. Dreams of becoming an actor, singer, professional baseball player, doctor, and then to being rejected from both the Navy and being a Texas Highway patrol officer preceded the realization, twenty years after college, that the answer had been with him all the time. Mentored by Gary Shandling, Jerry Seinfeld, and Jay Leno, it was Jay Leno pushing Bill to think beyond being an “opening act”. You will cackle your way through this episode as Bill charts his top moments across the county that range from…say, for example, the huge moment of his topless bar boss encouraging him to pursue comedy to being handed the “Best Standup Comedian in a Nightclub” Award from Joan Rivers, from the rise of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour to becoming an ordained minister, and so many more scenes you couldn't possibly write.
