A new study out of SickKids is opening a window into how scientists understand autism. Researchers have identified a previously overlooked gene linked specifically to the social interaction and repetitive behavioural traits associated with autism, a discovery they say could help improve genetic testing and eventually lead to more targeted therapies. Dr. Stephen Scherer, senior scientist and chief of research at SickKids, discusses what makes this finding so significant.

Bio Rodney Kaufman In an industry often defined by good intentions, Rodney Kaufman has built his reputation on something far more powerful: standards. As the founder of Corporate Canine Therapy, Rodney is not only shaping how therapy dog programs are delivered across the GTA and Ottawa; he is influencing how organizations think about psychological safety, risk management, and human wellness through the lens of canine-assisted support. With more than 10,000 hours of hands-on field experience, his work has taken place in the environments where excellence is not optional: hospitals, complex care units, schools, large corporate workplaces, and first responder settings. This is not theory. This is lived expertise. From Frontline Volunteering to Advanced Hospital Placements Rodney's career began with years of volunteering through St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Services, progressing through every handler level and culminating in advanced placements at SickKids. Working alongside his soul dog, Harlow, he supported paediatric patients, families, and peer support initiatives that included first responders. Their work in complex care environments required a rare level of stability, intuition, and trust. The very qualities that now define the teams he mentors. In recognition of her extraordinary impact, Harlow was awarded Volunteer of the Year at SickKids for her work with children under one year of age. Today, Rodney's work continues with Juno, his Great Dane and the current mascot of Corporate Canine Therapy who is a visible symbol of the calm, confident presence that has become the organization's signature. As Corporate Canine Therapy continues to grow, Rodney's role is increasingly that of mentor, evaluator, and thought leader. Developing the next generation of therapy dog teams while helping institutions integrate canine-assisted wellness in a way that is ethical, effective, and sustainable. Because in the right hands, a therapy dog program is not a visit. It is a strategy. www.corporatecaninetherapy.ca Corporatecaninetherapy@gmail.com

So who better to help us survey this hospital branding landscape than legendary ad man and host of CBC's Under the Influence, Terry O'Reilly? This episode is the second of a two-part series on hospital ads. Check out the first one in our feed.

Rod Black reported sports stories for CTV and TSN for four decades. A devoted family man, Rod has spent countless hours giving back to numerous charities around the world, including the Special Olympics, the Giants of Africa, Canadian Men's Health Foundation, Children's Aid Foundation, SickKids, and Plan International Canada. Rod Black is a sportscaster, host, emcee, and a philanthropist. Black was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his volunteer work. He has either hosted or called play-by-play for practically every sport there is. Rod broadcasted some pivotal Blue Jays games in 1992 and 1993, when the team won the World Series. He was on the ice with Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding. He lived with a Toronto Maple Leaf and partied with the teammates until legendary Leafs coach Pat Burns told him to cut it out. He was around for Ben Johnson's fabled win and disastrous fall from grace. He was live on air during 9/11. He captures all of these stories and a lot more in the pages of this book, showing how the business of broadcasting could truly be a blast and also cutthroat. After years at CTV, Rod Black moved to TSN, where he evolved into broadcasting game-a-day Black. It wasn't unusual for Black to call five different sporting events in a single week, sometimes more than one a day. Rod Black has two families: his own, and his work family. Black's work family is a result of his years on the road calling every sport imaginable. He was even a DJ at a roller-skating rink in Winnipeg, a rather inauspicious start to a stellar broadcasting career.Cut to Black is funny, engaging, warm, and revelatory—the perfect gift for anyone who wonders how sports broadcasts are made (sometimes by the seat of the broadcaster's pants).https://beacons.ai/chrisdpomayhttps://www.cameo.com/chrispomay book a personalized video message from yours truly CDP! https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/chris... if you wish to contribute to my media content and You Tube Channel content. https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast..https://www.barrycullen.com/

This episode of the IHSA Safety Podcast discusses construction safety at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and features Justin Da Silva, Safety Program Manager at SickKids.Justin discusses SickKids hospital's long-term plan called Project Horizon, which aims to improve pediatric care with new facilities designed for individual care. The project, funded by donations, will unfold over the next 10 to 20 years and involve demolishing some existing structures and building new ones, all while ensuring patient safety and minimizing disruptions.Justin shares the challenges of construction at a busy hospital and addresses the importance of requiring contractors to have certified occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS), such as COR®, to ensure safety during construction. This requirement comes from the need to manage risks effectively in a live hospital setting, where even minor incidents can have serious consequences for patients and staff.Justin further discusses the benefits of hiring COR®-certified contractors and shares the long-term vision for the project. For him, success at the end of the project means building a redeveloped hospital that serves the community without any incidents or health and safety issues for patients, staff, or contractors. These are, of course, essential to HIROC's work in partnering to create the safest healthcare system. In HIROC's Community Corner article series, we take this conversation to the next level. In this episode of Success Leaves Clues, hosts Robin Bailey and Al McDonald sit down with Adam Saperia, CEO of KixCare, Canada's first and only dedicated virtual pediatric care platform. Adam shares how KixCare emerged from a team of physicians who saw a glaring gap during the pandemic—children were not being adequately served by generic virtual care. With a mission to deliver specialized, accessible, and trusted healthcare for kids, KixCare connects families across Canada with top pediatric experts, ensuring timely and compassionate support whether the concern is physical, developmental, or mental health–related. Adam discusses his path from healthcare innovation to entrepreneurship, the future of digital pediatrics, and how technology can enhance, not replace, the human connection in care. He also sheds light on how employers and insurers can help parents by integrating family-focused care into benefit programs, improving both workplace productivity and well-being. You'll hear about: A Mission Born from a Gap: How a team of pediatric professionals saw that “kids aren't just tiny adults” and built a platform designed specifically for them. Virtual Care for Real Families: How KixCare resolves over 90% of cases virtually while maintaining compassion and quality of care. From COVID to Continuity: Why virtual care is here to stay and how it's evolved since the pandemic. Workplace Wellness for Parents: How KixCare helps employers support working parents and reduce absenteeism. Building Trust Through Expertise: Why pediatric specialization is essential to earning family confidence in virtual health. AI and the Future of Care: How tools like medical scribes and telehealth devices will help providers focus on connection, not paperwork. Purpose and Legacy: Why Adam views every appointment as planting the seeds of healthier futures for children and families worldwide. If you're a benefits advisor, HR leader, or parent looking to better support families through smarter healthcare access, this episode will open your eyes to how innovation and empathy can work hand-in-hand to change the future of care in Canada. Your kids head back to school… and suddenly, everyone's coughing. The runny noses, the fevers, the endless cycle of bringing germs home—it's part of family life. That was us this week. Sick again. Tired again. And honestly? It's frustrating. But in the middle of it, I realized something: even when our bodies feel weak, Jesus is still looking out for us.Just like a parent who keeps watch when their kids are sick, God doesn't step away when life wears us down. He's steady. He's faithful. And He cares for us in every season—even the germy ones.In this episode, we talk about finding God's presence in the everyday struggles, how even sickness can remind us of our need for Him, and why His care is constant.

We saw a post online that said: “My wife’s policy before sending sick kids back to school is that they can’t have a fever for at least 24 hours. If they are sick with a sore throat and a runny nose but no fever, you’re allowed to go to school. Hang out with Anele and The Club on 947 every weekday morning. Send us a textThis episode reviews findings from a cross-sectional study at SickKids on health literacy in pediatric VTE patients and caregivers (Res Pract Thromb Haemost, 2025). Among 101 participants, 74% of adolescents and 59% of parents/caregivers demonstrated low general health literacy using REALM, HAS-A, and eHEALS instruments. Communication with providers was the most affected domain, and fewer than half of participants were satisfied with their thrombosis knowledge. Adolescents frequently overestimated their understanding, underscoring the need for simplified educational resources and a “universal precautions” approach to health literacy in pediatric thrombosis care.AboutKidsHealth Thrombosis Hub: https://www.aboutkidshealth.ca/thrombosisBastas, D., Mancini, A., Wong, G., Brandão, L. I will probably spend the foreseeable future periodically reminding the world that when everyone was angry at Israel for starving children in Gaza, Israel's apologists spent days loudly proclaiming that no, they were actually just starving SICK children. As their DEFENSE they said this. They actually believed this helped their case. Reading by Tim Foley.

In this episode, Jyl and I unpack the passive-aggressive texts, the missing thermometers at 2am, the drama over doctor visits, and the emotional load that so often falls on one household. We also touch on how medication decisions, puberty, and step-parent involvement all get tangled up when communication breaks down.Whether you're navigating this as a bio parent, bonus parent, or both — you're not alone. Story at-a-glance The MAHA Commission's new report identifies food toxins, overmedication and environmental stressors as core drivers behind the surge in childhood chronic illness CDC data show that 87% of U.S. children have glyphosate in their urine, pointing to daily exposure through common foods like wheat, oats and corn-based snacks Federal agencies are now being mobilized to close research gaps, overhaul outdated food safety laws and launch real-time tracking of toxic exposures Chronic illness isn't just about genetics; it's the result of daily inputs like poor food quality, artificial light, lack of movement and excess screen time Removing inflammatory foods, restoring sleep and sunlight routines, and cleaning up your home environment gives your child's biology the conditions it needs to heal

Max and Matt dive into the wild world of sick kids: the endless fluids, missed days at daycare, and the looming question of how much sickness is too much. They talk about everything from preventing illness to navigating the tricky moments when it strikes, including handling fevers, the viral load theory, and whether it's okay to send your kid back to daycare with a little Tylenol. Max shares his unconventional (and controversial) approach to keeping his family from getting sick, and the guys explore how the balance between taking care of your kids and taking care of your work responsibilities can lead to some seriously complicated decisions. Plus, they discuss the fine line between being a concerned parent and overthinking it.
