Bob Rich is a giant in the world of fly fishing, conservation, and storytelling. I have known Bob for many years and he is the best fishing companion an angler could have. We have traveled the world together with President George H.W. Bush, Sandy Moret, Johnny Morris and countless others fishing destinations only one can dream of. Bob was a Bonefish Tarpon Trust Founding member, and has helped the Florida Redbone series with Gary Ellis to fight and find the cure for Cystic Fibrosis. He is also a very accomplished author with five books under his belt including, “Looking Through Water” which will appear soon on the big screen with actor Michael Douglas and son, Cameron. The movie is going to be called, “Blood Knot.” Later this month, Rich will receive the Lefty Kreh Award for Lifetime Achievement in Conservation, which is BTT's highest honor, in recognition of his support of fisheries conservation. On today's podcast, we cover the expansive life of one of my better friends, Bob Rich.

Bob Rich is the first one to discuss past lives and rebirth in a concrete manner. In season 1, we discussed living a peaceful life and creating the conditions for a peaceful death with the goal of having a good rebirth. In that way we acknowledged rebirth. Not all Buddhists believe in rebirth. But for some of us, it is an important part of the teachings and rebirth is part of the system of karma and hopeful eventual nirvana. Bob identifies as a secular Buddhist, but the story he shares with us in the most recent episode of the podcast is based on his realization that being a physicist was not going to allow him to help humanity in a way that was the most meaningful to him. And undergoing hypnosis and learning about five of his past lives led him to understand that he had what he calls a karmic requirement to help heal humanity. The primary story of change he shares with us is about this change from being a physicist - what he always thought he would be - to the path of healing others through therapy. Bob tells a fictionalized version of his life in his book Ascending Spiral: Humanity's Last Chance. We are fortunate that he is here now and very much real. And very much dedicated to helping humanity, he feels that we are very much on the edge - that we have so much self-destructive behavior.  And after five lives and busy current life, Bob is here to act as a professional grandfather, He wants us to have a future worth surviving and to have a world that's not ruled by greed and hate and seen that one rule by empathy, compassion, and decency.

Dr. Bob Rich was absolutely going to be a physicist. Until he wasn't. He realized that physics was not going to allow him to be a healer and a helper to humanity. As he opened himself up to the experience of understanding five of his past lives, he began to understand what he calls his karmic requirement. The real reason he is here now. He recognized that he had a talent for helping his classmates with their problems. And instead of a physicist, he became a therapist. He is an accidental, secular Buddhist who has a deep respect for the messages that we share around the world and across our many religious traditions. He sees the wisdom that has come from each of our prophets. And in this time of turmoil, Bob feels our familial connection and acts as professional grandfather to those who seek his guidance. Roughly 100 years ago when France controlled this part of West Africa, French Jesuits wanted to start a boarding school, but few natives would attend. Ep 273 - First Responder PTSD Guest: Bob Rich   The average person experiences about four events in their lives that could trigger PTSD. The average career cop encounters between 100 and 400 incidents that could trigger PTSD. Retired Abbotsford Police Chief Bob Rich knows this all too well.   In early 2015 Chief Rich lost two active members of the police department by their own hand. Their deaths shook him to the core. He was forced to look inward at his leadership, at the culture within his police department and in the first responder community. What was happening that PTSD and stigma rates were so high?    Chief Rich took on the responsibility of identifying the source and changing the culture. His first priority became the wellness of his team. Rich says, “These are women and men who put their lives on the line everyday to keep their community safe. In return, it is my job to keep them safe.”     He identified that a “suck it up” culture was one of the root causes and it was counterproductive putting everyone at risk. He and his team went to work to implement those needed changes. Then came the killing of Constable John Davidson, which rocked the policing community in Abbotsford, the Lower Mainland and the province.    Thanks to the support of the Vancouver Police and other police officers who took over law enforcement duties in the city for more than a week, the Abbotsford PD was able to take a knee, psychologically, physically and emotionally. Bob Rick says, “As a result, we didn’t lose another member – which can happen.” In Ontario over the past year, nine officers took their own lives.    Bob Rich is determined to help other police departments do what Abbotsford has begun to do – create a culture that understands the trauma of horrific incidents and supports one another.   We invited Bob Rich to join us for a Conversation That Matters about caring for the well-being of all first responders who care about us.   Conversations That Matter is a partner program for the Morris J Wosk Center for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University. Prior to that, he was with the Vancouver Police for 28 years, finishing his time as the Deputy Chief of Operations.   Bob’s story begins just before 2015. Since then, Bob has been working to change how we can run our agencies so members stay well throughout their entire career.   Tune in as Bob shares his key learnings through his experiences, both personally and professionally; how he has stayed intune with his emotions through these extremely tough events; what he has done to help himself and the other members of the organization deal with these tragic events as well as their mental wellbeing; and, overall, what has helped Bob stay together in these trying times.   Key Takeaways: [:46] Chief Neil Dubord welcomes retired Chief Bob Riche.
