Wine: Neudorf Tiritiri Pinot Gris RRP – $27.00 From the Moutere Hills in Nelson. The Wine: A semi-aromatic variety, this PG delivers scents of Asian pears and red apple. There's a natural white spice, almost pepper-like and a distinctive mineral quality. Satin smooth texture on the palate, juicy fleshy, ripe and delicious. Medium(ish) weighted and lengthy on the finish. The Food: Whilst great on its own, this wine pairs well with starter courses like sashimi or Waldorf salad, and some lighter main courses like Flounder with fresh lemon or fettuccine with tomato, basil and prawns. The season: 2024 was an excellent year for most growers in NZ, and especially Nelson. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Esk Valley Malbec Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2022, Hawkes Bay RRP from $24.99. From the Gimblett Gravels sub-regional GI of Hawkes Bay The Wine: Great colour concentration leading to a bouquet of ripe dark red berry fruits, blackberry and roasted plums, a mix of sweet and bitter chocolate, cacao and baking spices. The wood smoke from use of barrel adds complexity and depth. Dry with an abundance of ripe tannins and plenty of acidity for bite and freshness, West drinking from day of purchase through 2030. The Food: Great with moderate to high protein foods – from lamb to beef and even some roast chicken. Red meat, say a steak, that is cooked medium-rare has a lot more available protein on the palate than say one cooked to medium-well, or well-done. The rarer the meat the bigger and younger a red wine can be – the protein in the flesh and any juice that might ooze from it soften tannins in the wine making it seem smoother or softer. The other consideration is the sauce and the seasoning: I don't mean tomato sauce – though this is full of sugar and salt – I mean a reduction, a jus, or a cream=based sauce will all have a reaction with the wine. One piece of advice – if you have a chili meter from 1 to 10, 1 being the least heat and 10 being the hottest of hot, don't add chili spices to the food that is intended to go with red wine beyond a 3 or 4 on the scale. Chili turns the volume up on tannin and alcohol perceptions in red wine and can easily disrupt the flavours within the dish. The season: 2022 was a very good year for wines from Hawkes Bay. With a warm and dry winter, and the earliest veraison in 30 years. Then quite a bit of rain before 30+ degree days until harvest. The wines that I have tasted are balanced, complete and will age through to 2030 for most and 2035+ for the rest. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Vintage: 2022 Flavour: Always a fuller-bodied expression with flavours of grapefruit and green melon, some tropical ideas like pineapple and vanilla. Peg' Bay always has the knack of just the measure of new and aged oak barrels to bring shape and form to the bouquet and palate. The frame of this wine is bold and impactful with fruits and non-fruit flavours reflecting the bouquet along with a satin-cream mouthfeel. Cost: RRP at $45.00 Food pairings: Salmon with skin on, pan-seared or baked topped with a soy-glaze, served with lentils (or something earthy), something green and baked jacket potato with lots of sour-cream. Topicality: It's officially autumn, though daytime temps are still warmish, the evenings are definitely getting cooler - so a richer, weightier dish makes sense. Food that is filling and easy to prepare is always a plus. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chardonnay polarises people. But times change and this is a grape that's moved on - arguably nowhere more so than in New Zealand, which in recent years has started to deliver quality, diversity and great value in spades. It's timely, too, given the supply shortages and booming prices of the wines from Chardonnay's motherland in Burgundy. We're Chardonnay superfans and we've been licking our lips at how far and fast New Zealand Chardonnay has evolved lately. So it's exciting to hook up with New Zealand Winegrowers for this sponsored episode charting that dramatic evolution and exploring why there's more to the land of the long white cloud than Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.New Zealand wine superstars Michael Brajkovich MW (Kumeu River) and Master Sommelier Cameron Douglas give us the inside track, full of eye-opening insights and informed opinion. Including the following quote: 'I'm just gonna come out and say it: New Zealand Chardonnay can outclass Burgundy.'There's a bit of geeking out about Chardonnay winemaking - from oak barrels to malolactic fermentation - all with the aim of better understanding this most shape-shifting of grape varieties, and why New Zealand is doing such a good job with it (clue: a cool climate is key). We also dive into the fascinating topic of that much sought-after (and also misunderstood) character in Chardonnay sometimes referred to as, 'reductive', 'struck match', 'toasty' or 'flinty'. We wrestle with the vexed issue of how to refer to it and come up with an absurd but catchy alternative...Along the way we touch on how the devastating Cyclone Gabrielle has impacted the country as well as vintage 2023. You can support by donating to the Cyclone Gabrielle wine relief funds or buying and drinking wines from the most affected areas like Hawke's Bay and Gisborne - which ties neatly into our theme given Chardonnay is the leading variety in both those regions. Finally, we taste and recommend some favourite New Zealand Chardonnays including:Wairau Cove Chardonnay 2021, GisborneEsk Valley Seabed Chardonnay 2019, Hawke's BayKumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2021, AucklandKumeu River Coddington Chardonnay 2021, AucklandNeudorf Tiritiri Chardonnay 2019, NelsonBlank Canvas Reed Vineyard Chardonnay 2021, MarlboroughGreywacke Chardonnay 2019, MarlboroughAll details from this episode (including further wine and producer recommendations) are on our website: Show notes for Wine Blast S4 E16 - Ahead of the Curve with New Zealand Chardonnay. We'd love to hear from your views on this or any other wine issues - do send us a voice message via Speakpipe or you can find more details to get in touch on our website. Thanks for tuning in. It's raining men on this week's episode of #BTLRadioShow thanks to THE UMBRELLA MEN and producer DAN JAWITZ, MATT ESKANDARI talking WIRE ROOM, and a sneak peek into the world of Netflix's WENDELL & WILD from stop-motion guru HENRY SELICK. Writer/Director John Barker was originally slated to join us to talk about THE UMBRELLA MEN, but as things often are during a film festival, especially the hectic nature of #TIFF, John was unavailable at the last minute so producer DAN JAWITZ very kindly stepped in. Quite honestly, it is always a treat to speak with the boots-on-the-ground producer who has been involved in the process through acquiring the script, casting, working with the writers and director to solidify ideas and vision, location selection, hiring of department heads and more. A South African heist film to rival the fun and exploits of Danny Ocean and his Ocean's crews, Dan came to #BTLRadioShow to talk about THE UMBRELLA MEN fresh off its sold-out International Premiere at #TIFF. Listen as we dive into all things THE UMBRELLA MAN, including some breaking news about THE UMBRELLA MAN 2, a tiny hint about the story and returning cast, AND an upcoming soundtrack! But before you hear from Dan, take a listen to my exclusive interview with director MATT ESKANDARI talking about his latest action thriller WIRE ROOM starring Kevin Dillon and Bruce Willis. Breaking down WIRE ROOM and its directorial logistics as well as casting and some incredible performances by Dillon, Oliver Trevena, and Cameron Douglas, the work of production designer David Dean Ebert, cinematographer Will Barratt, and editor Chris Patterson, Matt also talks about working with Bruce Willis in three of his final films and Willis' constant professionalism. And you'll hear from exclusive interview with writer/director HENRY SELICK who gives us a sneak peek into the stop-motion animated world of Netflix's WENDELL & WILD. I've seen the first 30-minutes of W&W and I am just wild about it! http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Take a moment and think back to the beginning of 2020. How has your interaction and use of technology changed? I would hazard a guess that at the start of 2020, you rarely worked from home, you may have done the occasional Zoom call [if you even knew what zoom was] and there was no way you would have entertained presenting to a client on it. All your team meetings were done in person. Life looks pretty different right now. Today's guest is Cameron Douglas, the newly appointed CEO of Videopro. Cameron has been a long standing employee of Videopro who has worked his way to the top and is now proudly leading the organisation into an exciting new technology enabled world. As the name suggests, they are the professionals when it comes to video, servicing the professional services and education sector along with their retail stores open to the public. Cameron and I discuss the opportunities and challenges that technology has afforded us, as well as taking a look at where the future of workplace technology is going and how it is shifting our experience of work. We often think of workplace technology as our laptops, the servers and the connectivity of these, however the world of workplace technology can be far more expansive from recognising your number plate as you enter the building, to assigning you a desk and ordering your coffee. It has the ability to transform our experience of work.

New Zealand is one of the newest parts of the New World of wine. The Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc that catapulted it onto the global stage was only planted in the 1970s, but within 20 years, New Zealand's white wines were commanding the highest average prices in the world. Then came Otago Pinot Noir which has had a similar success. But where does New Zealand go from here? Is it too reliant on the UK, the market that helped to make its name? And is it still too focused on Sauvignon Blanc? Our panel which is co-moderated by Rebecca Gibb MW, author of The Wines of New Zealand, includes top winemakers Nigel Greening of Felton Road, Michael Brajkovich of Kumeu River, Rosie Finn of Neudorf, and Brent Marris of Marisco as well as leading sommeliers, Cameron Douglas and Stephanie Guth.

“I was a hard case, and it seems like I needed to learn my lesson the hard way,” writes Cameron Douglas, son of actor Michael Douglas, in his affecting memoir of crime and punishment. The author grew up between well-to-do households where it was a party trick for him as a child to pass a joint among the beautiful people. By the age of 25, he was injecting cocaine three times an hour while realizing that “the worst-case scenario has already happened,” his opportunities in the show-business world long since tossed away. The worst case, though, had yet to develop: in and out of rehab, as well as the penal system, proceeding from juvenile detention to time in a federal prison full of warring racial factions, all brought on by a fierce addiction to heroin and a drug-selling operation meant to support it.

LONG WAY HOME (on-sale October 22nd) is remarkable for its candor about growing up in a Hollywood royal family and for the unflinching portrait of a life lost to both addiction and crime. Kirkus Reviews calls Cameron Douglas's book “consistently unadorned…an affecting memoir of crime and punishment…a tale full of horrors and redemption and an ideal text for scaring at-risk youth straight.” Cameron is the son of Michael Douglas and grandson of Kirk Douglas. Theirs was like any other family, except Cameron's mom, Diandra, had a menagerie of strange pets including a semi-leopard that would pounce on visitors and a monkey that would steal car keys and cigarettes. Also, Cameron' s dad was perhaps the greatest movie star of his era (Cameron's first exposure to fame was being slung naked over Michael's shoulder on the cover of Rolling Stone). This book is infused with jet-setting players and far-flung locales – Jack Nicholson, Jann Wenner, Sean Lennon, Mallorca, Hollywood, and New York – and the accompanying lifestyle. What could go possibly wrong? A lot, as it turns out. Cameron was sent to boarding school, where he was expelled for drugs. This caused friction at home. His father became distant and cut off funds. Cameron began moving in questionable crowds. He started using drugs (injecting cocaine and later heroin). He struggled with addiction that resulted in multiple overdoses. He started stealing to feed his addiction. He bought a glock, taught himself how to use it, and then started to deal. This was not going to end well. His father wrote him off because he thought Cameron was going to die from an overdose or be killed by a cartel. Luckily for Cameron, he got busted before either outcome. Not by the cops. But by the DEA. He writes about the time he spent behind bars (seven years, two of which were spent in solitary confinement), the pressure to snitch (he didn't), and what life was like in prison (turns out there is sex and drugs and even lobster, just like life on the outside). But it's also a violent place – a kill-or-be-killed environment. Would he ever make it out? More importantly, would he ever be welcomed home?
