In this episode of the Road to Growth podcast, we are pleased to introduce you to Jeremy Harbour. Jeremy is an investor, entrepreneur and advisor known for M & A advisory and creation of the agglomeration model. He is the founder and owner of The Harbour Club, a company that helps entrepreneurs buy and sell businesses. He is also the owner of Unity Group, a private equity firm Born in UK, Harbour started a business when he was 14 years old and left school to pursue it further. The business was shut after nine years. In the 1990s, he owned a telecommunications company and acquired a competitor without cash or debt. He later moved to the M & A industry. Based in Singapore, Harbour deals in mergers and acquisitions of small businesses, and focuses on building businesses by acquisition and exiting through trade sale or public quote. He uses an agglomeration model to help small businesses. He was the Advisory Director for The Mint National Bank, a DBS Business Class advisor, and Chairman of the Marketing Group, a digital agency. He has been invited to British Houses of Parliament to advise on matters of business and enterprise. He is also the author of the book – ‘Go Do'. Harbour was the Coutts Entrepreneur of the Year runner-up three times.         Jeremy's career began at 8, when he was selling his mother's flowers in jam jars outside her beauty salon, but really got going at 14, with the aid of his helpful grandmother who drove him to car-boot fairs. “I was the annoying kid at school who was always trying to sell you stuff,” he admits cheerfully. He quickly progressed to a Saturday and then also a Sunday market stall and was not only selling his own lines but supplying other market traders too. Leaving school the moment he finished his GCSEs, Jeremy's comment to the Telegraph that “the only reason to go to university is to learn how to roll a really good joint”, has come back to haunt him many times, but his point is valid; what would he learn there that he would not learn better running his own business? A view endorsed by his careers teacher who told Jeremy's mother that Jeremy had spent an hour outlining his career plans in some detail and that Jeremy had better be allowed to get on with it.          With hindsight, Jeremy regards his first setback, aged 19, as a good thing, although it was devastating at the time when the failure of his company selling arcade games to pubs wiped out the £60,000 of savings he had built up in his teenage years and he had to go back to the drawing board. Moving back in with his parents, he was forced to digest some hard lessons which, although they caused weight loss and heartbreak at the time, have served him very well subsequently. He also confesses that he would have been insufferable had his star risen much further and that a little humiliation probably saved him in the long term. He had discovered that it is impossible to learn from theory, “The most I knew about business was on the day I started,” he says, “but of course logic doesn't apply to real business and real human beings. Business books and MBA courses are all about theory, but however much you plan and hedge, there will always be that black swan event which pops up and over which you have no control.” The concept that the more you think you know, the less you actually know and that the only way to learn is by experience, has been key in Jeremy's subsequent career...      Learn more and connect with Jeremy Harbour by visiting him on   Website : https://www.jeremyharbour.com/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeremyharbour/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jeremyjharbour       Be sure to follow us on Twitter: Twitter.com/to_growth on Facebook: facebook.com/Road2Growth   Subscribe to our podcast across the web: https://www.theenriquezgroup.com/blog Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2Cdmacc iTunes: https://apple.co/2F4zAcn Castbox: http://bit.ly/2F4NfQq Google Play: http://bit.ly/2TxUYQ2 Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKnzMRkl-PurAb32mCLCMeA?view_as=subscriber   If you are looking to be a Guest on Podcasts please click below  https://kitcaster.com/rtg/  For any San Diego Real Estate Questions Please Follow Us at web: www.TheEnriquezGroup.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKnzMRkl-PurAb32mCLCMeA or Call : 858 -345 - 7829 Recently reduced properties in San Diego County * Click **** bit.ly/3cbT65C **** Here* ****************************************************************************

Episode 109 - Maqoma's war begins as the amaXhosa invade the Colony in December 1834

It's December 1834 - the Second of December to be more precise. The British had just emancipated the slaves at the Cape, although real freedom was still some months off as the colonial office decreed that all should first work as apprentices to improve skills before they were set free. On the frontier, a sequence of unfortunate events were to take place which provided the spark that ignited a war. Albany Civil Commissioner in Grahamstown Captain Campbell was a man of the colonies, a settler with their interests at heart although ostensibly in the pay of the empire. Andries Stockenstrom who was one of the more astute frontier experts had left the Cape at the very moment that his deft touch was sorely needed when it came to the amaXhosa. Tensions had also been growing between the British officials of the Cape bureaucracy and settlers about how to treat the amaXhosa and Khoekhoe. The British thought they'd been quite clever over the past few months. They had restricted the flow of gunpowder to the frontier just in case the Boers became even more rambunctious about the coming emancipation - but all the British really managed by doing this is to reduce the colonists firepower on the eve of the Sixth Frontier War. The Cape authorities were trying to limit the supply of muskets and gunpowder to burghers on the frontier because they heard that many of these were supplying weapons to the amaXhosa. Which is true, but for every action there's an equal reaction as you're going to hear. Back in England, incidents and accidents, events and fires had shocked the nation and the small colony of the Cape was hardly on the radar of the ruling folks and the citizens. In October of 1834, the British Houses of Parliament or the Palace of Westminster as it was known, had been destroyed by fire - both the House of Commons and the House of Lords of the British Parliament had gone up in flame. Maqoma's mother Notonto heard about the planned hostilities and walked the thirty kilometres from her house to her son's to remonstrate and warn him against fighting the British. She had seen too many of her people dying in previous wars against the empire - but Maqoma was beyond reason.

Henry McDonald talks to two top authorities about the precarious state of the British Houses of Parliament: Ian Paisley Jnr. and the Observer Architecture Critic, Rowan Moore. This podcast episode is one of many examples of Henry's superb broadcasting work. These excellent interviews were recorded in 2022 before Henry became ill. The team here at Constructive Voices have been deeply saddened by the news that our colleague and friend, Henry MacDonald passed away aged just 57. We offer our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Those who have been listening to this podcast since we started, will recognize that Henry was one of the most important voices on the programme. His interviews never failed to be engaging, interesting, thought provoking, and on topics that make a real difference to the construction industry and wider society. Henry's long career in journalism included 23 years as the Ireland correspondent for The Guardian and observer. He also wrote landmark books on the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and was renowned for his insights into paramilitaries, the security services and politics. Next week, in Season 2, Episode 4, the Constructive Voices team will pay tribute to Henry by remembering some of the great interviews that he did on this podcast. But for now, we're remembering again one of Henry's most incredible interviews, discovering the fragile state of Britain's Houses of Parliament, the Palace of Westminster.

Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night celebrates the capture of Fawkes (1570-1606), who was apprehended under the British Houses of Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder, fuses and matches, planning to blow up King James I and his entire Parliament, which would have severely altered the course of British North America. Favorite quotes of the episode: “It really comes down to trust in yourself.”  “The real economy is massive, it’s 50% of GDP and it’s over 90% of the private sector workforce and yet it’s completely detached from global capital.” “Left or Right, actually, everybody wants the same things. Everybody wants the best for their family and the best for their children, but it’s become so polarized, you are just pigeonholed as one of them and that’s not conducive for debate or solving problems.” Episode Overview In this episode, I talk with Jeremy Harbour. Jeremy is a serial investor and expert in Mergers & Acquisitions of Small to Medium Sized Businesses. As the founder of Unity Group, he’s advised on more than 300 acquisitions of both distressed and solvent businesses.  Jeremy speaks worldwide on the 14 acquisition deal structures that allow you to buy and sell businesses – something particularly important for entrepreneurs to hear at this time. His commentary has been featured in the UK in The Sunday Times, Financial Times, The Money Channel, and he has been invited to Buckingham Palace and The British Houses of Parliament to advise on matters of business and enterprise.  TOPICS How to push past COVID-19 related issues & reactivate revenue and profit How to acquire opportunities in this economic downturn Proven strategies to acquire a business with little or no money down (while staying in the “zone of fairness”)  How to take back control of your income. Democratizing wealth 5 Questions Segment Q1. We know that the most successful and happy people have a morning routine, what do you do each morning or evening that sets your day up for success? I live between three countries and in each house, I have different routines. I get up and get the kids ready for school then I work, try to get all of my work done by 11 am or 12 pm, and then go work out. Q2. What's your definition of Success? For me, it’s freedom, the ability to choose how my day is laid out. Q3. What's your definition of Happiness? The cliche answer is wanting what you have not having what you want.  I do have a list of what I’d like to own and that motivates me to do more. Q4. What do you know now that you wish you would have known 10 years ago? I’m a self-taught merger and acquisitions guy and you are learning all the time and reinventing yourself all the time. I think growing up has really helped and a few good failures have really helped me to be more humble and been a useful life lesson. Q5. What do you think is the biggest issue facing busy professionals today? Balance, this freedom I talked about. People are obsessed with working hard and you can be a busy fool. I’ve genuinely noticed there is an inverse correlation between working hard and wealth. If you’re thinking of finally accomplishing that start-up idea of yours or buying a business or selling a business, then this episode surely got you covered. Today, Nick chats with Jeremy Harbour, an investor, author, and entrepreneur, to share his experience and some strategies on scaling-up a business. Jeremy will answer the following questions: How do we hone our entrepreneurial skills? What are the pros and cons of start-ups? What are the criteria of a perfect deal? Why do investors shy away from a certain market? Discover these and many more when you tune in the Scale Up Your Business Podcast. KEY TAKEAWAYS Entrepreneurs who begun from start-ups have the edge. They got more experience and have gained more knowledge. Being a big-time entrepreneur doesn’t just happen in a snap, after reading all the business books. Apply it and re-learn it. When people want to learn, they go to the internet. Though it offers enough information, make sure your sources aren’t biased. What you might read might be heavily influenced a by a certain individual’s or business’ objective, which is to sell. What is the perfect deal? It’s ‘not exposing your capital and not borrowing from banks’. It’s the deal that suits you and what you can get done. The best dealmakers are always overwhelmed with deals. You don’t want ‘deal heat’, the urge to close a deal and move on the next one, to happen you. You don’t want to look desperate. 3 reasons why a part can’t sell: Too risky Scale paradox – ‘you have to get big to get big’ Investing in small businesses is illiquid BEST MOMENTS “Start-up is the rite to passage. You have to do a start-up to fully empathise with the entrepreneurial experience.” “People who start businesses are not necessarily the best at scaling them.” “Everything’s hard until you figure it out the first time.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Harbour Club - https://www.harbourclubevents.com/ Jeremy Harbour Official Website – jeremyharbour.com Go Do! - https://www.amazon.com/Go-Do-People-Always-Business/dp/1536636789 ABOUT THE GUEST Jeremy Harbour Jeremy is a global leader in the field of small business Mergers & Acquisitions.
