[Producing more podcasts… ] I sometimes feel like the best thing I can do for our troubled world is to be quiet and do no harm.… [To be quiet and do no harm] Rebecca Solnit, We can't afford to be climate doomers (female voice) : Some days I think that if we lose the climate battle, it'll be due in no small part to this defeatism among the comfortable in the global north, while people in frontline communities continue to fight like hell for survival. Which is why fighting defeatism is also climate work. [Which is why] Am I one of those comfortable people in the global north struggling with defeatism? [am I a… defeatist? ] Yes. I am. I produce this weekly podcast in safe, luxurious conditions while the majority world fights like hell for survival. As the massive Caldor fire blazed towards South Lake Tahoe in 2021, Joyce knew she had to get out. “The sky was red. It was like hell on earth,” she remembers. Her family got to safety and her house was miraculously spared. But, even now, it can be jarring to remember the fire. Climate-related extreme weather events are on the rise and another disaster is seemingly right around the corner. Especially with freakish flash floods, a scorching heatwave and wildfire smoke blanketing much of the country. The climate crisis is causing a mental health crisis as anxiety over the future robs many of a sense of hope. Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change. Anxiety about climate change can trigger feelings of helplessness and anger at governments and businesses for not doing enough to take action. There's disappointment that leaders are not treating the climate crisis as a real global crisis. Some young couples say they do not want to have children, fearing that the future will be too bleak. Yet there is hope. In this special episode of Green Pulse, The Straits Times' US Bureau Chief Nirmal Ghosh speaks with Dr Britt Wray, an expert on climate change and mental health at Stanford University's School of Medicine. It's active now. We need to get smart about addressing it. And there's a deep approach that... You know, we've just been through the Great Resignation with COVID where a lot of people are leaving their jobs. But similarly, a lot of people are also asking themselves how can I be of service? What can I do at this time? How am I going to be? And you know, the more climate job boards and networking communities and sites of bringing people together to do that work of figuring out how they're going to go on their climate journey while infusing it with a sense of joy, with a sense of how can we make this fun, right? How can we reshift so this is not just focusing on the negative, but really focusing on what we want to be building and what is abundant and the better life that we're working towards? All of that has been popping up a lot and that gives me an honest sense of hope.You know, I see that reflected. I see real people doing real things and changes in their life. And I feel it within myself and all of those things are just great. It's possible to have high well-being, high meaning, high engagement with things that matter, and that are purposeful, and waves of cultivating, nourishing emotions around all of those things in an increasingly turbulent world. "In our study, we're looking at climate anxietyin 10,000 young people around the world, 16 to 25-year-olds in 10 countries across low, middle, high income settings, and 45% of the global respondents of these young people said that their climate anxiety is impairing their daily functioning. So concentrating, eating, going to school, going to work, playing, having fun, that kind of thing. They had very negative thoughts. 75% of the people around the world said that the future is frightening. 56% said that they feel humanity is doomed. And 39% said that they're hesitant to have their own kids. So, because of all that, we know - if we're talking in Nigeria, India, Philippines, Canada, UK, US, Australia, Finland, and some other countries - we're looking across really diverse scenarios in terms of the national income and what that means for their ability to adapt and respond to climate threats and also their exposure already to climate hazards and disasters that are going on.So for that global aggregate to be that high, it's pretty striking. And then when you really dig into the most affected and underserved countries on this issue, so those with lower level economies and more climate disasters, you see the distress shooting through the roof – more around 74% of the young people saying that it's impairing functioning, for instance. So it's a severe health equity issue thinking about what it means to live with the psychological impacts of the climate crisis. "Much greater investment in public transport infrastructure is enormous with about 40% of our carbon pollution in cities coming from cars and transportation. That really needs to be focused on and prioritized, and of course electrifying everything that we can, both in that sector and beyond, including in our buildings. When talking about the death of his husband, Terry Kaelber doesn't use the word suicide, "I tend to say he took his own life out of deep distress about the environment through self-immolation." Terry says it's out of respect for David that he chooses his words carefully — "It was a rational decision on his part." In 2018, David Buckel doused himself in gasoline and lit himself on fire in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. Minutes before, he sent a note to prominent media outlets. He wrote, “Most humans on the planet now breathe air made unhealthy by fossil fuels, and many die early deaths as a result—my early death by fossil fuel reflects what we are doing to ourselves.” David was 60, an environmentalist, and former LGBTQ rights lawyer. In this episode I talk to Terry about how he thinks about David's death now, and how grief still connects them. "I would never want the grief to go away," he says, "It's always a reminder of how important we were to each other." Science writer and scholar Britt Wray specializes in the mental health impacts of the ecological crisis. Her new book, Generation Dread: Finding Purpose in an Age of Climate Crisis, shares productive ways to cope, think, and act while facing an anxious ecological present and uncertain future.
Facing up to a climate crisis is a lot to handle. We have to push for the rapid deployment of solutions to mitigate more warming and greater damage. We have to adapt to warming that has already occurred and will be coming soon. And we need to repair loss and damage that people around the globe have already suffered. But as denial and inaction still blocks necessary efforts and planetary destruction is constantly on display in our news feeds, how do we process the complex emotions that inevitably follow? In her new book, Dr. Britt Wray aims to answer that question. Dr. Wray is a Human and Planetary Health Postdoctoral Fellow at the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine Centre on Climate Change and Planetary Health. She the creator of the weekly newsletter about “staying sane in the climate crisis” Gen Dread and author of the new book, Generation Dread: Finding Purpose in an Age of Climate Crisis. As the changing climate continues to shape the planet, and some of the crises that humanity faces while living on it, we explore mental health, and the ethics of having kids. On Today's Show:Britt Wray, Human and Planetary Health Fellow at Stanford University and author of the new book Generation Dread, talks about how climate anxiety can affect people's decisions on whether to have children, or not.
If you're like me, you might have a hard time getting to the end of articles that predict climate catastrophe. You might put a lot of faith in technology to save us, and you certainly don't want to think about an unsafe climate future for any young children in your life. If you're more like my guest for this episode, Britt Wray, you may have had periods of time where you can't stop thinking about climate catastrophe, times when your climate anxiety became so unbearable you couldn't function. Britt's new book is all about our emotional reactions to climate change. She says, "these abilities to sit with the emotions and allow them to be there is actually really crucial to climate action at all." We met for a hike through the Santa Cruz mountains and we talked about how she emerged from debilitating climate dread, and how she grappled with the question of whether or not to have a child. "In the end the decision to not have a child felt like a commitment to fear. And then on the flip side, deciding to have a child felt like a commitment to joy." Britt says, "It's a crucial step to find community with others who can stand in the fire with you, who get it, who will mirror and validate the concerns and will never say you're overreacting." If you give a shit, well, you've probably had at least a few moments where the enormity of what's in front of us has challenged your mental health in some way. I can't imagine there are many folks listening to this show who've never felt the heaviness of our climate future, of our climate present. There's a lot of guilt, a lot of shame, a lot of shame about that shame, a lot of furious action – we're here, aren't we. And running parallel alongside all of those emotions is the dread of what's being done out there, about the lack of action, and for the people who are taking action on the frontlines of the future, giving it their all. But, as Dr. Katharine Hayhoe says, we have to talk about it. Not just what's happening, but how we're dealing with it. How we can recognize it and move forward, for ourselves, together, for the planet, for the people who will come after us. My guest today is Dr. Britt Wray. Britt is the author of the fantastic new book “Generation Dread: Finding Purpose in an Age of Climate Crisis”, an impassioned generational perspective on how to stay sane amid climate disruption. Britt has a Ph.D. in Science Communication from the University of Copenhagen and is the author of "Rise of the Necrofauna: The Science, Ethics and Risks of De-Extinction." She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (sure, why not both?), where she researches the mental health impacts of climate change on young people. Britt is also the author of Gen Dread, the first newsletter that shares wide-ranging ideas for supporting emotional health and psychological resilience in the climate and wider ecological crisis. I have learned so much from Britt of late, and her book is a tremendous source of empathy and courage.
