When we talk about climate change, we usually talk about how we have to fly less, drive less, eat less meat, cut down our plastic, etc. What we don't often talk about is the impact of cities, yet cities are responsible for 80 percent of all greenhouse emissions! And cities are only expected to grow. With approximately half of the global population living in cities right now, we're expecting to see that number increase to two-thirds in 2050. So how do we rise to this challenge? Is it really possible to make cities net-zero or even net-positive?That is what we'll get into in this conversation with Benoit Bazin, CEO of Saint-Gobain!Our GuestBenoit Bazin is the current CEO of Saint-Gobain, one of the top ten oldest corporations in the world, and an aspiring worldwide leader in sustainable construction. Did you know that the roots of regenerative agriculture, organic farming, and the farm-to-table movement grew from the work of Black farmers like Dr. Booker T. Whatley and Dr. George Washington Carver? And yet today, Black farmers are highly underrepresented in farming and farm ownership. While the Black population of the US is approximately 13.4%, Black farmers represent 1.3 % of farmers across the US.In this episode, we had the honor and privilege of speaking with Kiani Conley-Wilson, a grower, activist, and organizer based in Troy, NY. She is passionate about environmental justice, anti-racist/pro-feminist organizing, and the power of food across cultures, economies, and environments. Kiani is the Community Empowerment Coordinator for Soul Fire Farm, which is an Afro-Indigenous-centered community farm committed to uprooting racism and seeding sovereignty in the food system. She also organizes with local organizations to develop people-centered systems and spaces. A guided meditation to look beyond climate change and envision a new kind of world!Scripted, recorded, and edited by your host, Anne Therese Gennari.Sign up for my newsletter to receive updates on more meditations, classes, and other climate optimist news: https://theclimateoptimist.com/sign-up-----What future could we find ourselves in if we kept some room in our hearts for the unimaginable? What life could YOU have if you allowed yourself to dream and believe? Too often, we're bound by our current realities, stressed and filled with worry and fear because we don't know what the future will look like. We fear change because we don't know what that change will bring. But we know that everything we've ever built, invented, or created, has come from an ability to look beyond what we know to be true now. Our world today consists of millions of manifestations - big and small - made by people who had the courage to dream of something new. People who were brave enough to think of realities that lingered outside their comfort zones; who dared to believe in the unbelievable and imagine the unimaginable, and who found the courage to go explore those new worlds. When it comes to climate change, the only hope we truly have is to be found in that courage. We must expand our hearts and minds, begin to question everything, and dare to dream. Because maybe change isn't so bad. Maybe change means that things could be even better. Better in the most unimaginable ways!I created this guided meditation to help you find the place where YOUR dreams, ideas, and visions live. It will help you broaden your perspective and trust that it's OK to not know everything. And that the sooner you let go of that need, the sooner you can move into the future where we're meant to be.Listen to this meditation daily and you will notice the world around you begin to shift, and you with it, as you become the hero this time needs!Enjoy! Hi friends, welcome to my Climate Optimist Fridays, a series of short motivational episodes to kick off the weekend and to reset after what might have been a long and challenging week. I’ve realized that when most people suffer from Sunday Scaries, I tend to suffer from Friday Anxieties. It’s interesting but when Friday afternoon comes around, I just feel… lost. It’s like all that juice that kept me motivated and busy throughout the week has run out, and I’m faced with having to deal with myself and the deeper questions like “Why are we here?” “Do we even have a shot at this climate change thing?” “Does my work to make this world a better place even matter?”I decided to start this series as a way to find something every Friday to be inspired and reminded by. I’ll be forced to tap into my own library of climate optimism thoughts and by sharing here, I can hopefully help someone else who might be dealing with Friday Scaries too! And if you’re not anxious on Fridays like I am, don’t worry, I need this for myself, so let this be whatever it needs to be for you! IN THIS FIRST ONE I'll talk about the core of what being a Climate Optimist means and answer the question: Why are we here? I hope you'll feel inspired and that you come back for more Climate Optimist Fridays to come so that we can continue this journey of healing, optimism, and empowerment together. Let’s stay motivated so that we can get to business and co-create this new world!Connect with Anne Therese:Website: https://theclimateoptimist.com/Instagram: @annetheresegennariTwitter: @AnneTherese_G See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Did you know that we have merely 60 years left of growable soil? That is if we continue doing farming the way we do today, with destructive practices like tilling, mono-cropping, and fertilizer use. The good thing is that soil has an incredible ability to regenerate itself and that it's hungry for carbon. And if it's something we have way too much of in our atmosphere today, it's just that. So by changing our agricultural practices and build for healthy soils, we can create a machine that will not only grow more nutrient dense foods, but also help sequester all the CO2 currently stored in our air.In other words - no only do we have the ability to save the soil, but if we do, the soil might very well save us.This is live Q&A with Rob Herring, the director of the incredible film The Need To Grow. If you haven't seen the film already I highly recommend you watch it - head over to www.theneedtogrow.com and start getting excited about soil!If you want to participate in more thing like this and learn how to empower yourself as a change-maker and activist, check out The Action Squad. How do we make change happen in a world that may not be ready for change? It’s election year here in the US and if there’s something that might be more important than anything it's that if you can, you turn out to vote. But what does this look like during a pandemic? And more so - how can you be more involved in politics in your every day life? Does your social media sharing and tweeting actually matter and do politicians listen to what you have to say? Learn about that, the Green New Deal, and much more in this chat with my friend and incredibly impactful guy Saad Amer.Saad Amer is an environmentalist, activist and the Founder of Plus1Vote, an organization dedicated to improving voter turnout and improving representation in our democracy. The term "vote with your dollar" is starting to become fairly well-known. People understand that how they spend their money and what companies and products they support matters. But what most people don't know is that we must also pay attention to what our money is doing when it's just sitting in our banks. Because (and this might come as a surprise to many, as it did to me) it's not just sitting there, it's out in the world doing stuff. Your money funds thing. So, what exactly is your money funding? That's exactly what we're about to get into in this episode with Benjamin Stuart, Chief Marketing Officer at Bank of The West and an expert on this topic. This bank is not like most other banks, they know money has the power to finance positive change and are taking action to support activities that help protect the planet and improve people’s lives. Here are some resources to check out in addition to this episode:Bank of The West Website: https://www.bankofthewest.com/Banking on Climate Change (Report by Rainforest Action Network): https://www.ran.org/bankingonclimatechange2020/Resources on How to Change Banks: https://www.womenpowerourplanet.org/takeactionNYT Article by Bill McKibben: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/11/opinion/climate-change-bank-investment.htmlJane Fonda's Fire Drill Friday: http://firedrillfridays.org/350.org "Stop The Money Pipeline": https://350.org/Please stay in touch!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/annetheresegennari/Website: https://heychange.world/Sign up to my Climate Optimist newsletter: https://heychange.world/sign-up-climate-optimist See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Did you know that it takes 713 gallons of water, 1/3 LBS of pesticides, and 13 LBS of carbon to make ONE t-shirt? Crazy, right? Also, did every year, about half a million tonnes of plastic microfibers leak into our oceans from washing synthetics - the equivalent to 50 million plastic bottles. These crazy facts don't even mention the inhumane and unethical practices that goes into making a majority of our clothes, so needless to say, fashion is a dirty industry. But it doesn't have to be that way, and I'm thrilled to have Kerry Bannigan, the woman behind The Conscious Fashion Campaign, on Hey Change. We chat about UN's sustainability goals, the human element for change, and what needs to be done to change Fashion Week for the better. If you want to learn more about the fashion industry and what you can do to start becoming a more conscious fashionista, check out my List & Guides on Hey Change World: https://heychange.world/lists-guides-1Kerry is the Founder of the Conscious Fashion Campaign, an organization that in collaboration with the United Nations, is engaging leading global industry event stakeholders to commit to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Is there hope for our planet or should we consider it game over? If you were starting to doubt, make sure to tune into this conversation with Renee Peters and she will undoubtedly bring back your faith!"It's incredible to see how fast soil comes back to life when humans get to work with it the right way. For the longest time I thought we were the problem, then I realized that if done the right way - we can actually be the solution."Renee Peters is an Earth activist who––after a decade working as a fashion model in NYC and all over the world––realized a deep yearning to return to Nature. With an undergrad degree in Animal Biology, last summer she decided to follow her calling to explore the potentials of permaculture and regenerative agriculture for ecosystem restoration. She took a Permaculture Design course in Vermont with Whole Systems Design and subsequently completed a two-month apprenticeship on a Homestead near Albany; a four-month WWOOF exchange on a permaculture production farm in Maui, HI; and is currently deepening her practices with permaculture as a Forest Garden Apprentice in Highland, NY.No longer modeling, Renee seeks to show her following on social media that transitioning to a completely different field of work is possible, no matter what your age is. She also hopes to show that reconnecting and working with the land is a change that not only benefits the planet, but also benefits the soul and personal health and happiness.Follow Renee:Website: http://www.model4greenliving.com/Instagram: @Renee.ElizabethPetersTwitter: @model4greenLVNGMentioned in the show:Terra Preta: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terra_preta (Humans positive impact on the Amazonian rainforest)NY Times article: Make a compost bin at homeStay in touch:ANNE THERESE Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/annetheresegennari/HEY CHANGE Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heychangeworld/Website: https://www.heychange.world/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Changing the narrative around climate change is imperative if we are to aim for a regenerative future. We can't continue to just pump fear and point fingers (let’s face it, we’ve all been wrong) and there's no point in piling evidence of our inevitable disaster unless we're given the clear directions of what to do.Fear + uncertainty = anxiety + apathy. Which means a bunch of unhappy people unable to get to action. Reversing global warming is not just possible - it's our only option - and we need to start looking at it from excitement and understand that it is, in fact, the most exciting time ever to be alive!I want to help shift your Universe so that you can feel good about being here, alive and thriving on this planet today. Not despite all the terrible things humanity has done, but because of all the good things we are here to do. I invite you to start your own personal journey towards becoming a happy, healthy, and mission driven Climate Optimist. In The Climate Optimist Class #1 we will uncover why optimism is needed in the world today and how we can start changing our personal worlds through the practice of retruthing. I would love to see your retruthings as you go about and transform your worlds! Please tag me - @annetheresegennari and @heychangeworld and encourage friends and families to start #retruthing their worlds as well! For updates and positive inspiration, sign up to the Climate Optimist Newsletter.
