This is a long discussion between myself and Nelson – the Canadian Dividend Investor – about The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life by Alice Schroeder. There are really two definitive books about Warren Buffett – this one and Buffett: The Making of An American Capitalist by Roger Lowenstein. Lowenstein's book is excellent, but he wrote it in 1995 without the cooperation of Warren Buffett. The book was also written before Warren Buffett was extremely famous. The Snowball, in contrast, was written with the cooperation of Warren Buffett. Alice Schroeder covered Berkshire for Morgan Stanley and knew Warren Buffett personally. With his blessing, she began the project in 2003 and was given unprecedented access to Warren's files, spent a lot of time talking with him directly, and interviewed all of his close associates. The book is massive – 852 pages – and is a deep study on Warren Buffett's life. The book is controversial and we discuss that in this podcast. Warren Buffett hasn't publicly criticized it or disavowed it, but Alice Schroeder has commented that the portrayal was difficult for him at times. He doesn't endorse the book, it's not sold at the Berkshire meetings, and he appears to have distanced himself from Alice.I love the book and think it's filled with life & business lessons. I hope you enjoy our conversation about it.Links.* The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life: https://www.amazon.com/Snowball-Warren-Buffett-Business-Life-ebook/dp/B009MYD9F8DisclaimerNothing on this podcast is investment advice. The information in this podcast is for information and discussion purposes only. Have you ever stopped to ponder the profitability of life? Queen Bdivine, known affectionately as Queen B. Divine, has a bone to pick with the way society has structured our existence. In her impassioned monologue, she unveils the harsh reality: life, as it stands, is unprofitable for the average person. But why should it be this way? Queen B. Divine challenges us to reconsider our perspectives. It's not life itself that's flawed, but rather the societal systems we've erected around it. From the exorbitant prices at the grocery store to the soul-crushing nine-to-five grind, she highlights the myriad ways in which the average person is being shortchanged. read full blog at bluntreflection.com --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/queen91/message

When humility meets the gridiron, extraordinary tales emerge, like that of Marcus Ogden, whose transition from the NFL's bright lights to the entrepreneurial stage is inspiring. ✅ Join over 10,000 newsletter subscribers: https://go.ryanhanley.com/ ✅ For daily insights and ideas on peak performance: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryanhanley ✅ Subscribe to the YouTube show: https://youtube.com/ryanmhanley Connect with Marques Ogden LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marquesogden/ Website: https://marquesogden.com/ More about the Episode In our latest episode, Marcus and I tread the fine line between success and hubris, unpacking how the very ego that can drive us to great heights often requires tempering to achieve genuine contentment. His stories, steeped in candor, reveal that our proudest moments should be measured not by our accolades, but by the hands we extend to lift others. There's an art to listening that goes beyond merely hearing words—it's about truly understanding narratives, the kind that Marcus and I unpack in our discussion. It's the same skill that turns a conversation into a connection and a narrative into a lesson. This episode serves as a masterclass in the mutual benefits of mentorship, the transformative power of teaching, and the undervalued craft of active listening—skills that Marcus and I consider pivotal in business and life alike. We dissect the impact of these soft skills in fostering profound personal and professional relationships, and how they can be leveraged to turn life's cacophony into a symphony of opportunities. The finale of our chat honors the resilience that defines a victor's mindset, a transformation Marcus knows intimately. We explore the nuances of bouncing back from life's blindsides, the patience and grit demanded in the face of adversity, and the long road to speaking success. How does the integration of philanthropy and capitalism redefine the traditional concept of success and giving? This episode features Frank McKinney, a real estate entrepreneur and philanthropist. McKinney shares his journey from humble beginnings in Indiana to becoming a successful real estate developer, selling some of the most expensive houses in the world. He emphasizes the importance of philanthropy in his life. He discusses the concept of "philanthrocapitalism," which involves combining the best aspects of philanthropy and capitalism to create sustainable solutions to poverty, and through this approach, he has built self-sustaining villages in Haiti. His story illustrates how success in business, coupled with a commitment to philanthropy, can lead to a more fulfilling life.Listen to this inspiring conversation as Frank shares how you can start giving small and make a big impact.[00:00 - 08:40] Becoming the Person You Want to BeFrank's humble beginnings in Indiana, combined with his early challenges, underscore his resilience and determination to achieve success against the oddsDespite a lack of formal education and a challenging start in life, Frank's tenacity and hard work led him to a prosperous career in luxury real estate development[08:41 - 24:10] Philanthrocapitalism: Giving Beyond CharityFrank breaks down the concept of philanthrocapitalism, which combines the heart of philanthropy with the efficiency of capitalism to create sustainable solutions for povertyReflecting on his journey from a troubled past to finding his professional and spiritual callings, he emphasizes the importance of finding purpose beyond material successHe argues that mere charity exacerbates poverty, advocating for sustainable projects like building self-sufficient villages in Haiti as a more effective approachHe also highlights the importance of measuring the impact of donations, focusing on how far each dollar goes in creating lasting changeIntegrating philanthropic efforts into business models and stresses that giving is a fundamental part of professional success[24:11 - 32:59] Aspiring to Enrich LivesFrank introduces his book, Aspire, and focuses on how we can move from the conventional definition of being rich, which is often fleeting, to being enriched, where one's impact extends beyond material wealthHe also talks about what's next for him and his business[33:00 - 50:29] Small Acts, Big ImpactFrank underscores the importance of recognizing and appreciating the often-invisible people in society, such as custodians and short-order cooks, as a way of practicing everyday kindness and generosityHe challenges the notion that happiness comes from external sources, advocating that true joy is a result of being a responsible steward of one's blessings, especially in helping those less fortunateHis philosophy on giving and happiness suggests that small, consistent acts of kindness can have a significant impact, both on the giver and the receiverTweetable Quotes:“Exercise your risk tolerance like a muscle. Eventually, it will become stronger and able to withstand greater pressure.”“You marry philanthropy and capitalism together, then you can solve poverty.”“If I can succeed in the business of real estate, that's meaningless unless I succeed in the business of life. And part of succeeding in the business of life is sharing your blessings with those less fortunate.”Resources Mentioned:Hope From My Heart by Rich DeVosSimply Rich by Rich DeVos_____________________________________________________________________Connect with Frank McKinney throughWebsite: https://frank-mckinney.com/Get a copy of his book now: Aspire! by Frank McKinneyCONNECT WITH US! Mike a 67-year-old man who lives in North Carolina with his wife of 45 years Ann. He has four grown children. He worked thirty-five years in the Internet and Telecom industries. He was involved in 5 startup companies one of which was purchased by a fortune 15 company for several billion dollars. After leaving the high-tech world he started a consulting company helping small companies to launch new products, sales training, and leadership development. During this time, he was a member of seven different churches. Five of which were startups. He is an ordained elder and was men's ministry director at four of those the churches. Mike's story tells of the strategies used in the high-tech businesses to sell big and reach corporate determined goals. These strategies and goals were often cut-throat and required behavior and actions that countered his faith. Sadly, he saw many of the same business metrics used in the churches he helped start. Mike currently is developing a full-time men's ministry and is currently mentoring and coaching over twenty men. Mike speaks to the issues of men contending with a culture that seeks to stereotype and demean them.Special thanks to Mike for sharing his story. Welcome to episode 48 What the All Blacks can teach us about the business of life. We are really pleased to have James Kerr back on the show with us today. Last week we explored the principles of what makes a team great. We explored the shift the All-Blacks made in their leadership approach, pass the ball, as they call it to shift ownership to the team. We explored the the teamwork journey the All-Blacks went on. Their focus on playing with purpose and creating a learning environment. Let's get into the episode.Proudly brought to you in association with S A Partners, a world-leading business transformation consultancy.Quotes05:10min Have you got a culture in which complaints really go upwards? Or does everyone just kind of smoke cigarettes in the bike shed and kind of complain about the teachers? 10.30min And it's always that balance between the freedom to have the autonomy to individuate to become everything that we want to be to be our own person, balanced with our responsibility to collective action.Key Takeaways1. Leaders create leaders – pass the ball. The first takeaway is from the leaders create leaders statement James made. Right the way down to the front line in an organisation, this is a leader's role. In James book legacy, he writes about the All Blacks Pass the Ball lesson. The job of a leader right down to front line employees is to create leaders. People who are empowered, focused on their goal, motivated and leading the way forward.2. Sweep the sheds – humble leadership. The second takeaway, sweep the sheds, is about humility in leadership. One of the All-Blacks lessons in leadership is that senior players and leaders sweep down the change room at the end of each game. They do not leave it to the cleaners or get the players to do it; they do it themselves. This behaviour demonstrates and creates a culture of humility, unity, and respect. It is incredible how one simple leadership behaviour can create so many positive outcomes. These are called Capstone behaviours, behaviours that have a positive flow on to many other benefits. A great approach as a leader is to think about the culture you are looking to build or improve. Think about the behaviour you and your team could focus on that you predict would have many other positive cultural flow-on effects. Thanks again for your time, knowledge, and energy James, I look forward to the upcoming books and hopefully getting you back on the show to talk about these in the future.LinksLinked in: linkedin.com/in/james-kerr-09a70bbEmail: kerrjames1@icloud.comBook: Legacy, 15 Lessons in Leadership - What the All Blacks Can Teach Us About the Business of Life. Keywordsculture, leadership, frontline, leaders, great, blacks, business, good, team, environment, talk, people, sport, climate, called, organisations. IntroWelcome to Episode 47 of the enterprise excellence podcast. Many of you know my belief that excellence in sport is not far different to business. Today's guest has studied and proven this. It is such a pleasure to have Mr James Kerr, the author of "Legacy" on the show with us today. "Legacy, What the All Blacks Can Teach Us About the Business of Life" is one of the best books I've ever read. James is an author, speaker, and leadership expert who helps create high-performance cultures for elite teams and organisations. Let's get into the episode. James, thank you so much for joining us today.Proudly brought to you in association with S A Partners, a world-leading business transformation consultancy.Quotes04:28min So I was really interested in that process of how you take something that's intrinsically strong. You know, clearly, even at 2004, they had the world's best sporting stat. That was about 75% of all encounters over about 110 years at that point thereabouts. You know, an incredible stat already, but not always well. And the new management led by Graham Henry, the kind of the three wise men are the Gang of Four, it's been called in different ways. This leadership group, took a long, hard look at the culture and really looked to reboot it. And you know, the results have spoken for themselves in terms of their approach. 07:33min Again, that idea of lineage is extraordinarily powerful. And that's just sort of one of the ideas. Other things around their learning environments, their place is committed to getting better every day. They're values-based vision-led purpose-driven groups. You know, they know what they stand for, and they know what they don't, and they live those values out loud. They're focused on character. And I'm doing it again, militarily doing the right thing on a difficult day. They have clarity of vision; they know where they're going. And they've asked the deepest question of all why, why does it matter? You know, there's a purpose, purpose beyond results. 28:48min How shall we do this? Because empowerment is people executing a plan, they've been a part of making. Really. And then and then what in mission command gets called the sort of directed telescope, you don't micromanage. You just look at some small moments here and there, you keep an eye on things, but you don't kind of get right into the micromanagement. Because otherwise, you take away all of that autonomy that you that you've created. Manish Chokhani is one of India's most respected financial market experts. He is a Director at Enam Holdings and a Governing Board Member at Flame University. He is one of the wisest people I know of, and the kindest. His insights and advice are the result of a life of critical thinking, reading, curiosity, and humility. We cover a lot in this show, and this conversation is going to teach all its listeners a lot about life than just thinking, learning, and investing.
Here is THE book recounting the life and times of one of the most respected men in the world, Warren Buffett. The legendary Omaha investor has never written a memoir, but now he has allowed one writer, Alice Schroeder, unprecedented access to explore directly with him and with those closest to him his work, opinions, struggles, triumphs, follies, and wisdom. The result is the personally revealing and complete biography of the man known everywhere as “The Oracle of Omaha.” Although the media track him constantly, Buffett himself has never told his full life story. His reality is private, especially by celebrity standards. Indeed, while the homespun persona that the public sees is true as far as it goes, it goes only so far. Warren Buffett is an array of paradoxes. He set out to prove that nice guys can finish first. Over the years he treated his investors as partners, acted as their steward, and championed honesty as an investor, CEO, board member, essayist, and speaker. At the same time he became the world's richest man, all from the modest Omaha headquarters of his company Berkshire Hathaway. None of this fits the term “simple.” When Alice Schroeder met Warren Buffett she was an insurance industry analyst and a gifted writer known for her keen perception and business acumen. Her writings on finance impressed him, and as she came to know him she realized that while much had been written on the subject of his investing style, no one had moved beyond that to explore his larger philosophy, which is bound up in a complex personality and the details of his life. Out of this came his decision to cooperate with her on the book about himself that he would never write. Never before has Buffett spent countless hours responding to a writer's questions, talking, giving complete access to his wife, children, friends, and business associates—opening his files, recalling his childhood. It was an act of courage, as The Snowball makes immensely clear. Being human, his own life, like most lives, has been a mix of strengths and frailties. Yet notable though his wealth may be, Buffett's legacy will not be his ranking on the scorecard of wealth; it will be his principles and ideas that have enriched people's lives. This book tells you why Warren Buffett is the most fascinating American success story of our time.
