Today I have Ashlee Gadd as my guest as we are talking about a "thing that matters" - creativity, or really, doing whatever it is that makes you feel more like you. We encourage our kids to be creative, yet as adults we often fully lose this part of ourselves to a busy life. We count creativity as something that we no longer have time for, that is inessential. Today's conversation challenges that and encourages you to keep creating, right in the margins of a busy life and motherhood. Ashlee s a wife, mother of three, believer, and the founder of Coffee + Crumbs. When she's not working or vacuuming Cheerios out of the carpet, she loves making friends on the Internet, eating cereal for dinner, and rearranging bookshelves. Her book, Create Anyway: the Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood, is now available wherever books are sold. One of the values of restoration is creativity. Architecture is creativity, making a budget go farther than you thought is creativity, cooking a beautiful meal, scheduling your day so you have time for what is important to you, and so much more require creative actions. At the root of creative is "create", which means "to make or bring into existence something new". Creativity is producing something which is not obviously or already there. While creativity can range from perfecting organisation in a small space to a Degas painting, one thing all creative actions have in common is the need for white space, quiet space, empty space to provide the downtime needed for creativity. This week Jennifer Pepito is joined by Ashlee Gadd the creator of Coffee and Crumbs and author at the Coffee and Crumbs Substack. They talk about how to create downtime for creativity, learning to better understand your personal relationship with social media, and the spiritiual importance of creativity. Do you ever feel a twinge of guilt when you prioritize your creative side, thinking it might take away from your responsibilities as a mom or professional? Today, we dive deep into the joy of pursuing creativity, even in the busiest seasons of life. Join us as we chat with Ashlee Gadd, the founder of Coffee and Crumbs, and author of "Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood." I'm your host, Mentor Mama, and I'm thrilled to explore the transformative power of creativity with Ashlee.Have you ever felt intimidated by the term "creativity," associating it only with professional artists or crafty moms? Ashlee breaks down this barrier, emphasizing that creativity is a broad concept. It's not just about crafting or art; it's about making something, creating meals, memories, rhythms—activities integral to every mother's daily life. Listen as we discuss:
Ashlee Gadd is probably best known for creating Coffee + Crumbs, a life-infusing, creative corner of the internet where moms write and make and share and grow. Ashlee has done this work herself and wrote this beautiful book (her own photography included) called Create Anyway: Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood. We talk about how to continue to create during full (or outright hysterical) seasons, permission slips for moms, and how to get a little less precious about perfect conditions for creativity. We are all wired to make things, so whether your idea of creativity is to write a sonnet or to make spreadsheet into a color-coded extravaganza, this conversation is for you. Ashlee Gadd is the founder of Coffee + Crumbs--a beautiful online space where motherhood and storytelling intersect. As a writer and photographer, Ashlee has spent her entire motherhood creating in the margins. When she's not writing or vacuuming Cheerios out of the carpet, she loves making friends on the internet, eating cereal for dinner, and rearranging bookshelves. She and her husband have three kids and live in Northern California. Learn more at ashleegadd.com, coffeeandcrumbs.net, and Instagram @coffeeandcrumbs. Welcome to the Love Where You Are podcast! This week I sat down with Ashlee Gadd. Ashlee Gadd is the author of Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood and she is the founder of Coffee + Crumbs - a beautiful online space where motherhood and storytelling intersect. Ashlee has spent her entire motherhood creating in the margins, that means using whatever free time she has to become creative and connect with God through that creativity. Do you love to write? Draw? Paint? Garden? Each of these are creative expressions and are a result of the beautiful and unique way God has designed you and me. Creativity is great for our brains but also our spirits and can give us new energy and bring us closer to the God who gave us that creativity in the first place. But when we become moms, finding time and margin for those creative outlets can be difficult. Depending on our season of life those margins may be smaller than others, but as my guest on this week's episode, Ashlee Gadd says, start somewhere even if its small. In this episode we discussed: How to steward the creative gifts God has given us Paying attention to the gifts others see in you And how creating every day can actually make you a better mom Thank you for being here today. Now, let's dive into the conversation! You can connect with Ashlee through Pinterest, Instagram, and her website. You can also order her new book! FAVORITE TAKE-AWAYS: *Creating every day can make you a better mother. *We should be stewarding the creative gifts God has given us; it is an act of worship, honoring and glorifying Him! *Experiment and find your niche! Maybe try painting, and if you realize it isn't for you, try something else! *Other people can see things in you that you might not see, like your talents--listen to those voices who see your gifts! REMEMBER: *Kids pick up more what's caught than taught. If we don't want our kids to become phone zombies, then we also can't be phone zombies! *Assess what creativity does to your mind, spirit, and the physical energy it can provide. *Assess what is possible in your current season of life. Have reasonable expectations and find your margins. For Ashlee, it means getting up at 5am in the morning so she can spend a couple hours writing. And remember, we are never stuck in one season forever, it will change. *Start somewhere even if its small. Connect with Somer! Welcome talented author and photographer, Ashlee Gadd! In this episode, Ashlee reminds us that our journey through motherhood has the power to ignite and nourish our creativity. Ashlee reveals how embracing the blessings and inspirations of motherhood can fuel our creative endeavors, enriching both our lives and those around us. With an emphasis on the importance of play, Ashlee reminds us that our children innately understand the value of embracing creativity without seeking permission. Through their example, she encourages us to reconnect with our own sense of playfulness, unleashing the inner child that often gets buried beneath the responsibilities of adulthood. Another significant aspect explored in this episode is the power of invitation. Ashlee reveals that all friendships begin with a simple invitation, and the same principle applies to creativity. She emphasizes that it's always easier to invite someone or ourselves into a creative pursuit rather than passively waiting to be invited. By actively seeking opportunities to engage in creative endeavors, we empower ourselves to explore new territories and build meaningful connections. Tune in to this remarkable episode as Ashlee Gadd opens our hearts and minds to the transformative power of embracing both motherhood and creativity. Prepare to be moved as she challenges conventional beliefs, offering a refreshing perspective that will inspire you to "Create Anyway" and embark on a lifelong journey of self-expression and joy. Remember, there's always time to play, and your creativity deserves the spotlight it craves. I have taken a whole week break since graduation, and this week I am back at it! Capstone time begins now. My capstone project will consist of a deep-dive into the research around the benefits of creativity in order to write a robust literature review. Beyond the academic paper, I am creating a book proposal for my next non-fiction book about everyday creativity. Here are the 10 books about creativity I mentioned in the episode: "Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi - Explores the concept of flow and how it relates to creativity, offering insights into the creative process. "Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear" by Elizabeth Gilbert - Encourages readers to embrace their creativity, overcome fear, and lead a more inspired and fulfilling life. "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron - A renowned guidebook for nurturing creativity and unblocking artistic potential through a twelve-week program of self-discovery and creative exercises. "Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World" by Adam Grant - Explores the characteristics and behaviors of original thinkers and provides insights on how to champion new ideas and drive meaningful change. "Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative" by Austin Kleon - Offers unconventional advice and inspiration for embracing creativity, encouraging readers to borrow from other artists and find their unique creative voice. "Creative Confidence: Unleashing the Creative Potential Within Us All" by Tom Kelley and David Kelley - Written by the founders of IDEO, this book explores how to unlock and nurture creativity in individuals and organizations. "The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles" by Steven Pressfield - Examines the challenges and resistance faced by creative individuals and provides strategies for overcoming obstacles and unlocking creative potential. "Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking" by David Bayles and Ted Orland - Explores the psychological and emotional aspects of the creative process and addresses common fears and obstacles faced by artists. "Imagine: How Creativity Works" by Jonah Lehrer - Investigates the science and psychology behind creativity, offering insights into the creative process and strategies for cultivating creative thinking. "The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life" by Twyla Tharp - Provides practical advice and exercises for developing creative habits, enhancing productivity, and fostering long-term creativity. Bonus. "Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood" by Ashlee Gadd is part pep talk, part permission slip. This book honors both the mothering journey and our God-given desires to create. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
“God did not create us to be mere spectators, watching on the sidelines inhaling popcorn while He does all the work. Rather, He invites us to be active participants, co-laborers in making the invisible Kingdom visible. The act of creating is part of our calling as image bearers,” writes Gadd. “There is no better permission slip than this: to know and believe with your whole heart that the God who made you, the same God who designed blueprints for the galaxies and poured the foundation of the earth, designed you in His likeness, on purpose, for a purpose.” Have you ever felt a calling, but felt tethered by your role on the homefront? Well, mom to mom, I am so excited to connect with our next guest Ashlee Gadd. As a mom of three she has created a warm and inviting community of other mamas who want to do great things while also being called to shepherd their kids well. The desire to create is there, but the obstacles are real, especially if you become a parent and feel like your time, resources and energy are limited. My guest, Ashlee Gadd, is the perfect person to speak to his as she has just released a book called Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood Ashlee and I ended up talking for two hours about art and perfectionism, how it takes a village to create good work, and the social media of it all. We also took a tangent and had a fascinating discussion about paid communities (including Patreon - where I host Secret Stuff), and metrics and some of the more in-the-weeds parts of content creation. That part of the conversation will be available to Secret Stuff members only. JOIN SECRET STUFF HERE I felt so inspired after talking with Ashlee. You don't have to be a writer or online creator to enjoy this conversation. All of us are wired for some sort of creative expression and life can always get in the way of that. You can buy Ashlee's book Create Anyway wherever you buy books. I hope this conversation inspires you to pursue your own creative outlet with abandon. I am so excited to have Ashlee Gadd on the Still Becoming Podcast, talking about her book Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood. This conversation is centered around being creative while being a parent, however, I believe there is good wisdom about being creative that can also be applied in other contexts. It can be so hard to create in the margins of your life, and I hope this conversation, and Ashlee's real life example and encouragement will be an invitation to keep going in whatever creativity looks like for you. I appreciated how she names the privileges she has in her creativity, and I appreciated the inspiration she offers anyone wanting to create, and insight about how to move past the roadblocks that you may confront. I am with you in this process, and I found Ashlee's presence and outlook really relatable and encouraging. Ashlee Gadd is author of Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood and the founder of Coffee + Crumbs—a beautiful online space where motherhood and storytelling intersect. As a writer and photographer, Ashlee has spent her entire motherhood creating in the margins. When she's not writing or vacuuming Cheerios out of the carpet, she loves making friends on the internet, eating cereal for dinner, and rearranging bookshelves. And they talk about the creativity of children.Support the show: https://therabbitroom.givingfuel.com/memberSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
“What does it mean to be creative…it's allowing yourself to be so inspired by the beauty of the world that you want to capture it in some kind of form and then having the discipline to actually carry it out.” -Ashlee Gadd on the Elevating Motherhood Podcast Mothers often feel guilt when they pursue something that takes time away from their children, especially when that something could be deemed less important than parenting. Writer Ashlee Gadd felt the same way when she was navigating being a first-time mother, exhausted yet yearning to be creative. Now a mother of three and the founder of Coffee + Crumbs, an online community bringing mothers together through storytelling, Gadd intentionally finds time to be creative. Ashlee Gadd is someone I've followed my entire motherhood journey…for almost a decade. I've listened to her podcast and read her blog. Ashlee has been showing up for years through her brand Coffee + Crumbs. She's been creating and mothering that entire time and all of those years of experience with creating and mothering are now brought together in her beautiful new book Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood. Her book and this interview inspired me so much and I know they will inspire you. In a world that tells moms they are too busy to go to the bathroom by themselves let alone create anything, Ashlee is a voice of compassion and practicality that says “yes you can be a mom and create. Yes you can take matters into your own hands and make the time. Your ideas matter. Your creations have great purpose in this world. You're not alone in your desire to want to create and bring more beauty into your life and the lives of your family and community.” Ashlee's Bio: Ashlee Gadd is author of Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood and the founder of Coffee + Crumbs—a beautiful online space where motherhood and storytelling intersect. Ashlee is passionate about encouraging women to embrace creativity in their lives as a means to enhance their well-being and that of their families. Creativity can feel like something we'll get to someday. Like when the kids are grown or the kitchen is clean. If we let it, that someday can turn into delay and even never. Why are we talking about this as part of our series The Healthy Way? Because we believe actively practicing creativity helps us live out how God made us. Founder of Coffee + Crumbs, Ashlee Gadd, talks with moms all around the world about motherhood and creativity. Our conversation focuses in on how to get started when it's been a while, why creating together is a reflection of doing life together, and how to incorporate some practices into our actual lives that will get the creative sparks going. You don't have to consider yourself an artist to be creative. You simply need to be someone made in the image of God. You ARE creative, now let's get on with the work of recognizing when we are already practicing creativity, and intentionally adding some outlets into our everyday experiences that help to break up the monotony and see the world with new eyes. Our series "Lighten Up about Parenting," wraps up today, which is perfect because, drumroll please, Calm the H*ck Down is officially out in the world! So we're running out of podcast but I have a whole book waiting for you, all about parenting. As you probably know by now, I invited 10 beta testers from all over the country to share their honest thoughts about my book, Calm the H*ck Down. They were given an early copy and volunteered to treat their kids like lab rats to see if this thing actually works. Will Calm the H*ck Down actually calm you the heck down? Because I think after the year we've all had, we need it. So today I'm chatting for a few minutes with Amy, special needs mom of three and middle school teacher from Texas, about Calm the H*ck Down, processing her kids getting diagnosed with autism, and how she calms the heck down as a special needs mom. And then, stay tuned, because I'm interviewing myself and answering some frequently asked questions about the book. Hey, you are invited to a Virtual Happy Hour with me and Coffee+Crumbs founder Ashlee Gadd on January 14. We are going to have so much fun, and there's swag! I'm personally mailing everyone who comes to the event a Calm the H*ck Down koozie and personalized bookplate to stick in your book and I hope so many of you register that I spend half of January at the post office. Can you imagine being an entrepreneur, author (The Magic of Motherhood), podcast host, and mother and choosing to take an entire month off of work? It sounds like a dream! This is exactly what Ashlee Gadd, owner of Coffee and Crumbs did this past August and we wanted to hear all about it! On top of that, she shares her fantastic view on her body after having two kids, the spiritual awakening of motherhood, and her favorite episode on her fantastic and famous podcast. Today we are graced by the creator of Coffee and Crumbs, Ashlee Gadd! Coffee and Crumbs is an online community and podcast where mothers can share their stories, and find camaraderie together. Ashlee is an author, and mother to two boys and one baby girl on the way! In this episode, she will talk about how very normal she is (cereal for dinner? We’ve all been there!) And we will conquer the topic of COMPARISON. We will realize that comparison is a heart problem, that there is room to believe in abundance, and that we are ALL sacrificing something. Our hope is that you will feel empowered and receive the tools to overcome comparison, or at least soften the blow! We will tackle “V.H.E.” (aka. the marriage syndrome of ‘very high expectations’) as well as the importance of speaking kindly about our spouse! Ashlee will elaborate on her career path, her newly published book, ‘The Magic of Motherhood’, and how this large and growing community came to life. Of course, we will learn about Ashlee’s Disneyland favorites as well! This truly is such a good episode, chalk full of content to make your day that much brighter! On this episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I chatted with Ashlee Gadd about stewarding our gifts. We talked about everything from how to determine what our giftings actually are to how we can use them for God’s glory and not our own. Ashlee is a wife, mother, self-taught writer and photographer from Sacramento, California. When she’s not dancing in the kitchen with her two boys, she loves curling up with a good book, lounging in the sunshine, and making friends on the Internet. Ashlee loves writing about everything from motherhood and marriage to friendship and faith. Running Coffee + Crumbs is her dream job, x 100. Listen to what she said when I asked her about using our gifts in spite of insecurity we might feel. “We were talking about the fall in Genesis when Adam and Eve are hiding from God and then Adam finally shows his face and explains to God that they were hiding because they were naked. Then God says, ‘Who told you that?’ Four words. It’s such a simple question, but it’s one that I can actually return to over and over again when I’m feeling insecurity and those lies are creeping in and strangling me… If I start putting an actual voice to the lies that I am hearing it becomes easier to know what, and more important who, to believe.” I really appreciated Ashlee’s vulnerability, particularly on the topic of stewarding our gifts. Today’s episode brings me to Common Space here in Sacramento, which is a rentable space for events, photoshoots and other fun things, to chat with writer and photographer Ashlee Gadd. Ashlee is the founder of Coffee + Crumbs—a collaborative blog about motherhood—and she was kind enough to help me continue my segment on those who teach their craft to others. Recently, she and the team at Coffee + Crumbs launched a writing workshop that looked incredible! So, I knew I wanted to catch up with her to chat about the blog, the workshop and everything else she’s working on these days. In the interview, we talk about the amazing community surrounding Coffee + Crumbs and how Ashlee believes that the workshop has strengthened that community. She also chats about how Coffee + Crumbs came about, what the team is working on right now (she may have given us a little inside scoop on that front, by the way) and her best advice for those looking to share their knowledge with others through workshops and classes. The full episode + show notes can be found at creatingyourownpath.com.
Ashlee Gadd is my guest on this episode #011 of Process! This conversation is a bit longer than most other ones ... mostly because Ashlee and I could've kept talking forever. As a photographer and writer based in California, Ashlee has been exploring the online world of motherhood by running a collaborative blog called Coffee + Crumbs. It's a site that hosts articles that speak honestly and openly about the art of motherhood and what she calls "the good kind of heartache." Currently, Ashlee is on a journey of grow Coffee + Crumbs as much as she can, which we'll talk about in the episode.
