Early on the morning of August 28th, 1955, 14-year-old Emmett Till was kidnapped from his great-uncle's home by two white men, Roy Bryant and JW Milam, and several others. Why? He'd allegedly flirted with Roy's wife Carolyn Bryant. Roy, JW, and possibly others proceeded to whip, punch, and pistol whip Emmett, before putting a bullet in his head and dumping his body in the river. And then they were found innocent of his murder, a murder they later publicly admitted to, in a rigged trial. Real history today - not that new Florida fake news history. Just this fall, Dr. Hill hosted a conversation at Wheaton College featuring author David Tell (Remembering Emmett Till), who was also the lead investigator in the Emmett Till Memory Project, and Emmett Till's cousin, Rev. Wheeler Parker (Argo Temple Church of God in Christ in Summit, Illinois). That fateful summer of 1955, Pastor Parker, accompanied Emmett on that visit to Money, Mississippi. He witnessed both the incident at the market when Emmett "whistled" at Carolyn Bryant, and was in the house in the middle of the night when Emmett was kidnapped by her husband. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden announced that the addition of a new federal holiday to recognize Juneteenth. The Juneteenth holiday was commemorated in African-American communities throughout United States history.  However outside of black communities there were lots of questions following the President's announcement as to the meaning and significance of this holiday.  President Biden's announcement also followed the Senate unanimously passing the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act on June 15, 2021.  The holiday name derives from June and Nineteenth and is referred to as a portmanteau or a blend of words.  The holiday celebrates the Emancipation of slaves in states in rebellion against the Union on June 19, 1865 which is the date slaves in Texas were proclaimed free.Recent hot topics such as the detention and trial in Russia of WNBA star Brittney Griner in Russia on cannabis oil possession charges as well as the ongoing controversy related to the August 28, 1955 murder of 14 year old Emmett Till in Mississippi following charges that were later proved to be based on false and contradictory testimony.  The accuser Carolyn Bryant as well as the people who murdered Emmett have never been brought to justice.   Jessica is joined in this episode by her high school classmates and life long friends Dr. Natasha Greene and Margaux Johnson.  Dr. Natasha Greene works with the federal government and has provided mentorship and motivational/consulting services.  Margaux relocated following high school and now resides in Georgia where she has rose through the ranks in various companies in accounting and financial roles in a variety of companies requiring domestic and international travel. Today in our special series, Momentum: Civil Rights in the 1950s, Sharon rewinds and takes us back to the origin story of a life lost far too soon due to a brutal and racist attack: the murder of Emmett Till in 1955. What began with a young boy who desired to connect with family and learn where his mother came from in Mississippi, ended in horror for the Chicago 14-year-old boy. Though no one will ever know exactly what happened in the grocery store co-owned by Carolyn Bryant leading up to the murder, history will show that what began with a lie from Bryant, resulted in the death of Emmett Till at the hands of Roy Bryant and JW Milam. Three days later, when his body was finally found, it was mutilated and nearly unrecognizable. After viewing and personally identifying his body, his mother, Mamie, did something completely unexpected: She chose to have an open casket at his funeral. Photographs of his body circulated around the country, appearing in magazines and newspapers. “Time” later selected one of the photographs, showing Mamie over the mutilated body of her dead son, as one of the 100 most influential images of all time. They said, “For almost a century, African Americans were lynched with regularity and impunity. Now, thanks to a mother's determination to expose the barbarousness of this crime, the public could no longer pretend to ignore what they couldn't see.” The trial was held near where Emmett Till's body was found. The courtroom was filled to capacity, and the town was overrun with reporters after the story captured national attention. The trial was electrifying. With all of the media attention, what did the all-male, all-white jury find in the verdict after 67 minutes of deliberation, and why?
