Following the unexpected arrival of a ventriloquist dummy on his doorstep, and the sudden, violent death of his wife – two events that might be related – Jamie Ashen is arrested by Detective Lipton, a cop with a thing for electric razors. Lipton's also a by the books kind of guy who's convinced Jamie is responsible for his wife's death. But Jamie doesn't have time for games — he's determined to find out who or what killed his wife and tore her tongue out in the process. His search takes him back to his home town of Raven's Fair, where the superstitious residents suspect the spectral Mary Shaw, a long-dead ventriloquist, may be to blame. Seems Shaw was connected to the disappearance and ritual murder of families years back, then became the victim herself of a heinous crime. With Lipton on his tail, Jamie visits his aging father Edward, his young wife Ella, local mortician Henry and his demented wife Marion, who unspool a tale too fantastic to be true. And slowly, the truth about Raven's Fair reveals itself to Jamie's unsuspecting, and for now human, eyeballs. Author Richard Chizmar stops by Mainstreet to talk about his celebrated career as a prolific essayist and writer of horror and mysery short stories, novels, and screenplays. He is the founder of Cemetery Dance Publications and editor/publisher of Cemetery Dance magazine. Perhaps best-known in Harford County for his locally-inspired Chasing The Boogeyman, Richard also co-wrote with Stephen King the novella Gwendy's Button Box. Despite his international following and acclaim, Richard still calls Harford County home. Like his friend and sometimes collaborator, the actor Johnathon Schaech (episode 88), Richard credits the strong work ethic he learned from growing up and playing sports in working-class Edgewood for paving the way to his future success as a writer and publisher. From the opening pages of John Mantooth's newest horror tale, “Holy Ghost Road,” we're plunged into the thick of the action. The story is seen through the eyes of Forest, a 15-year-old who's just witnessed Pastor Nesmith forging a pact with a demon. She's on the run to find her grandmother, the only person who can make sense of what's happening and maybe, maybe put a stop to it. Unfortunately, Granny is 40 miles away, and Forest is on her own with no car, no phone, and an entire congregation on her trail. To reach Granny, Forest will have to learn to see the world true, even as the demonic and the sacred wage war for her soul. This book has been a great read, and so I'm very excited to talk all things scary with the author. John and I talk about the choice to make this a first-person viewpoint and how that influences the story. He shares some of the real-life influences and their role in the book. John's also a crime writer, having written three novels under the pseudonym Hank Early, and he talks about how the two styles cross over and which of the two genres is his favorite. We also go into his recent time with Cemetery Dance Publications—through which this book was released.
Who wants to hear from more horror writers? If your hand's in the air, then kick back and enjoy hearing from author Jonathan Janz, who has a new book out on Nov. 11 through our friends at Cemetery Dance Publications. Here's a look at the story: In the spring of 1912, American writer Arthur Pearce is reeling from the wounds inflicted by a disastrous marriage. But his plans to travel abroad, write a new novel, and forget about his ex-wife are interrupted by a lovely young woman he encounters on a London-bound train. Her name is Sarah Coyle, and the tale she tells him chills his blood. Sarah's younger sister has been entranced by Count Richard Dunning, who is rumored to dabble in bizarre religious rites and experimental medicine. Arthur agrees to help, but he has no idea of what awaits him at Altarbook, Sarah's ancestral mansion, or the remote English countryside, where Count Dunning and his followers are about to unleash an unholy supernatural power. Jonathan and I head right into the story—we talk about Count Dunning and how he came to be, Sarah's role, what leads Arthur to join her, and what inspired some of the settings. Brian Keene has called Janz “One of the best writers in modern horror to come along in the last decade,” and we talk about what such praise means, as well as the influence that Keene has had on his work. Jonathan and I dive into his personality and how he sees himself after publishing more than a dozen books. Jonathan works as a high school writing and film teacher and we discuss how he works with young creatives.
Sam. Fucking. Raimi. I think I can stop there. No? OK then, onward we go! For this episode I'm continuing my interviews with amazing talent publishing books though Cemetery Dance Publications. Ian Rogers joins me to talk about his soon-to-be-released collection of 22 horror stories, “Every House Is Haunted.” Perhaps the biggest news is that the book was optioned by Sam Raimi and a feature film of one of the stories, “The House on Ashley Avenue,” is currently in development at Netflix. Script by Jason Pagan and Andrew Deutschman, directed by Corin Hardy, helmer of “The Nun” and “Gangs of London.” We talk all about this, how Ian met Sam Raimi and what the process has been like. Next, we dive into the book itself, of which the stories include: A mysterious double murder draws the attention of an insurance company with a special interest in the paranormal. A honeymoon cabin with an unspeakable appetite finally meets its match. A suburban home is transformed into the hunting ground for a new breed of spider. A nightmarish jazz club at the crossroads of reality plays host to those who can break a deal with the devil...for a price. Ian talks about where the ideas came from, which story was the first to be published, and some of his favorites, as well as whether anything was changed from when they were first written.
If you're the type to wonder if that creaking sound is a restless soul, best to skip this episode. For all you horror fans, welcome! Author Thomas Smith joins me to talk about his book, “Something Stirs,” out on Oct. 13 through our friends at Cemetery Dance Publications. Here's a look at what lies within these pages: Ben Chalmers is a successful novelist. His wife, Rachel, is a fledgling artist with a promising career, and their daughter Stacy is the joy of their life. His novels have made enough money for him to provide a dream home for his family. But there is a force at work in their lives. A dark, chilling, ruthless force that has become part of the very fabric of their new home. A malevolent entity becomes trapped in the wood and stone of the house and it will do whatever it takes, to find a way to complete its bloody transference to our world. Local Sheriff Elizabeth Cantrell, and former pastor-turned-cabinetmaker Jim Perry are drawn into the family's life as the entity manipulates the house with devastating results. And it won't stop until it gets what it wants. Even if it costs them their faith, their sanity, and their lives. This is actually a re-release, since the book was originally published in 2011 through a different company. Thomas and I talk about what readers can expect in this updated version, as well as how he came work with the fine folks at CDP. We dive deep into the story behind the book and how Thomas created the menacing presence within the Chalmers' home. This is a Christian horror novel, and if that's a new term for you, you're not alone. We look into what that genre is all about and what can—and cannot—be done in this kind of book.
For this very special interview with Stephen King collaborator and Editor of Cemetery Dance Publications, we are joined by Steven Boltz of the King Zone at the Super Network and The Knack Theatre. We talk to Richard about the brand new Gwendy Trilogy co-written with the one and only Stephen King, how he got his powerhouse publishing group off the ground, what it's like to write for the movies, and other stuff. Thanks for listening!

For years, publishing a Halloween-themed collection has been the dream of author Kevin Lucia, and on Oct. 22, it comes true with the release of “October Nights” through Crystal Lake Publishing. Set in the fictitious town of Clifton Heights, the book contains four shared-world tales of small-town Halloween horror. In this episode, Kevin and I walk through the world of Clifton Heights and how it came to be. We look at characters in horror, and what makes them truly matter to the reader. Kevin and I run through each of the stories and how these made the final cut as opposed to other idea (which any good writer has a ton of!). Last spring, at the height of the pandemic's first wave, Kevin saw the publication of his first hardcover limited edition novella from Cemetery Dance Publications, “Mystery Road.” We talk about how the last year and a half has been and how it influenced him as a writer.

On this episode, Jason and Michael talk wierd fiction, reading and writing without thinking of genre, and writing about exotic locations with Daniel Braum. They also discuss his fiction, especially his latest debut novel, The Serpent's Shadow, releases earlier this year from Cemetery Dance Publications. My apologies for the quality of this episode. Trying out new software and a new laptop and it came out choppy. I tried my best to fix it, but there are still some bad parts.Jason and Michael then discuss the very strange 1987 movie, Street Trash. Join them as they try to figure out what the point of it all was, even if it was fun.
Rudi Dornemann interviews author Daniel Braum about his short story collection The Night Marchers, editor Norman Prentiss about why Cemetery Dance Publications published it, and reader Michelle Souliere about why she decided to read the collection back to front rather than just sampling a few stories. November is off to an intense start. Wendy Sheridan, Mary McGinley, and Robin Renée welcome listeners to the new month by wishing everyone a Happy NaNoWriMo, Happy National STEM/STEAM Day (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), Happy (or Hairy) No Shave Month, and introduce some info on other celebrations and awareness days. But the main topic on everyone's mind is the U.S. midterm election. After what seemed endless campaigning and ratcheted-up anxiety about the importance of outcomes, voters had their say on Tuesday, November 6th. Political and social activism can hardly afford a break for long, but taking time for a few breaths and a smile over some substantial successes is in order. Robin and Wendy discuss election results, beginning with kudos to the winners in the New Jersey 2nd, 7th, and 11th Congressional districts and to the activists who helped make the victories happen. They talk about the good news of the House of Representatives being back under Democratic control. Tuesday night also turned out to be a good night for diversity, with victories for notable LGBTQ+, Native American, African-American, Latina, and Muslim candidates. There were some not entirely unexpected, but disappointing losses - Beto O'Rourke in Texas and Andrew Gillum in Florida chief among them, as Stacey Abrams is still fighting the good fight and has not yet conceded in Georgia. While far from creating ideal circumstances, the election results have given liberals and progressives reasons to be hopeful. Later in the show, Robin interviews Biff Bam Pop! publisher, Andy Burns. Just on the heels of the Halloween season, his new book, This Dark Chest of Wonders: 40 Years of Stephen King's 'The Stand' is on its way from Cemetery Dance Publications. Andy shares about how he came to write the book and gives a bit of a Horror/Stephen King 101 for the uninitiated and offers perspective on the spectacle of U.S. politics from north of the border. Birthday nods include Bram Stoker, Margaret Mitchell, Minnie Riperton, Bonnie Raitt, Rickie Lee Jones, Gordon Ramsay, Tom Anderson (MySpace Tom!), and Laura Jane Grace. Happy Diwali to all those who are celebrating. May light triumph over darkness! Of all the monsters in Stephen King's fiction none have captured reader imaginations quite like The Stand's Randall Flagg--The Walkin' Dude, The Dark Man. But nine years before The Stand was published King wrote of this Dark Man who walked, rode trains, and hitchhiked across America leaving bodies in his wake. This is detailed in King's college poem "The Dark Man." In 2013 Cemetery Dance Publications printed this in an illustrated book, and Arnie has read and reviewed it in this episode of Books & Nachos. Join him to learn about The Dark Man's early appearance as he prepares for next week's review of The Stand.
