You can't see it, but it's there. And you know it's there. There's such a depth to this human experience. And to just get caught up in the day-to-day news cycle is so superficial. And again, everyone is on their journey, and all the phases of the journey are good.” (18:37) (Chris) “Our bodies are what they are. Our soul is pure; it's part of God. So, our soul is what it is. Our body is what it is. So, the mind is the only thing that we can change, or manipulate, or massage, or improve, or regulate.” (23:09) (Chris) “If you don't regulate your mind, what happens is your mind runs rampant. You should be the master of your mind. Your mind should not be the master of you.” (27:34) (Chris) “Here's part of the problem. I'm a professional in the audio and recording industry. So, if I try to sing something, I can actually hear how bad it is.” (42:32) (Chris) Resources MentionedChris' LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/fractalchriscurran/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/fractalchriscurran/) Chris' Podcasts: The Podcast Engineering School Show – https://podcastengineeringschool.com/category/show/ (https://podcastengineeringschool.com/category/show/) The Mystic Show – http://themysticshow.net/host/ (http://themysticshow.net/host/) Chris' Book: Leap Beyond Your Limits – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599303426/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599303426/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) Podcast Engineering School – https://podcastengineeringschool.com/ (https://podcastengineeringschool.com/) Podcast Engineering School YouTube Channel – https://www.youtube.com/c/PodcastEngineeringSchool (https://www.youtube.com/c/PodcastEngineeringSchool) Podcast Engineering School Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/podcastengineer/ (https://www.instagram.com/podcastengineer/) Podcast Engineering School Twitter – https://twitter.com/podcastengineer (https://twitter.com/podcastengineer) Podcast Engineering School LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/company/podcast-engineering-school/ (https://www.linkedin.com/company/podcast-engineering-school/) Uncut – https://uncut.fm/ (https://uncut.fm/) Books Mentioned: Communion – https://www.amazon.com/Communion (https://www.amazon.com/Communion) Podcast Junkies Website: https://www.podcastjunkies.com/ (podcastjunkies.com) Podcast Junkies YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Podcastjunkies/ (https://www.youtube.com/c/Podcastjunkies/) Podcast Junkies Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/podcastjunkiesjunkies/...

Does sound quality really matter in podcasting? Well, if you ask most listeners and today's guest, a trained and experienced audio engineer who has worked with some of the biggest names in music, the answer is a resounding YES.  Chris Curran runs the Podcast Engineering School, where he emphasizes the importance of quality in all areas of podcasting, including sound. Chris also hosts his own podcast, the Podcast Engineering Show, and works as a podcast engineer for companies who are looking to making podcasting a part of their marketing strategy.  On this episode, we dig into  his experience in these areas and discuss how podcast content has become the central hub of content creation for many of the companies that he has worked with - and why virtually every company he has worked with has been thrilled with the impact that podcasting has had on their marketing.  We also get into some questions from listeners, discussing considerations for setting up a recording space when recording with more that one person in a room, the drawbacks of recording two people on one microphone, and freedom in designing a format for your new podcast. Episode 8: A great microphone is an important tool of the trade so choose yours wisely. Type “Best podcast microphone” into Google, YouTube, or Pinterest, and you’re likely to find the Blue Yeti atop many lists. Before impulsively adding it to your shopping cart though, you should learn about different types of microphones and how they differ. Do your homework, because you should pick the microphone that is the best for your voice and your room. CONDENSER VS DYNAMIC As a podcaster, you don’t have to be a professional sound engineer, but you should know the differences between a condenser mic and a dynamic mic. When you see a singer in a recording studio, odds are good that she’s singing into a condenser microphone. Your first clue: you’ll notice that it’s a side-address microphone. In the photo in the blog, the podcaster is correctly speaking or singing into the side of the mic — not into the top. If you take a closer look inside the head basket, you can see a diaphragm or membrane inside. Because condenser mics tend to be sensitive, they’re better suited in a sound-treated studio that doesn’t have a lot of room noise or echo. Characteristics of studio condenser mics: Greater frequency response Sensitive to louder sounds Requires phantom power, a.k.a. 48V Cleaner and truer to reality Best in a sound controlled environment More costly When you see musicians on stage, you’re likely to find dynamic microphones being used. These mics are better when there are several musicians, for example, when you’ve got vocals and instruments (guitar, bass guitar, drums.) As pictured above, the singer is correctly singing into the top of the microphone. With a dynamic microphone, sound waves hit a thin metallic diaphragm that is attached to a coil of wire. A magnetic field is part of the energy conversion. In podcasting and radio, dynamic microphones can be ideal because of durability and price. When your mouth is close to the microphone, dynamic mics sound good for spoken word while picking up less room sound. Characteristics of dynamic mics: Durable Do not require power Good in noisy environments Less sensitive Lack depth and color More affordable Now that you know the differences between condenser and dynamic microphones, evaluate your space to see which type might serve you best. I encourage you to try both, if you can, to see which type sounds best for your voice and recording environment. In lieu of sound treating a room, many podcasters improve their audio quality by recording in a closet full of clothes or underneath a blanket with both types of microphones but especially to tame sensitive condenser microphones. XLR VS USB As you shop for a microphone, take note of the connections. Generally, XLR connections require an external interface to connect the microphone to your computer. External interfaces often have better preamps and analog to digital converters. USB microphones can plug directly into your computer resulting in a more straight forward setup with less expense (because you don’t need to buy an interface.) Microphones like the Audio-Technica ATR-2100 and Samson Q2U have both XLR and USB connections. Interestingly, I’m told that these conbo microphones actually sound better when plugged in via USB over XLR. It’s worth noting that quite a few very popular podcasts use budget mics like the ATR-2100 or Q2U, and they sound great. MICS THE EXPERTS USE Because audio is so subjective, selecting the best podcast microphone can be challenging. Rather than going by the advice of random Bloggers and YouTubers, I scanned 196 episodes of the https://podcastengineeringschool.com/category/show/ (Podcast Engineering Show) and ranked the top 29 microphones by mentions by guests. In full disclosure, I had the pleasure of being a guest on https://podcastengineeringschool.com/andy-wang-host-and-producer-of-inspired-money-podcast-pes-106/ (PES episode 106) and talked all about my podcasting...

I seriously looked forward to it every week. What makes it so different from all the other courses I’ve purchased over the years is the live, in-person element. It makes it so much more enjoyable, and I know for a fact I would never have made it through all this material if it were a self-paced, video course.” ~Adam C., Class 18D Alumni “If you are serious about producing podcasts and would like to learn from a true leader in the field, Chris Curran’s Podcast Engineering School is a huge value. This is a lifetime of experience that will benchmark your knowledge among the best in podcast sound engineering. I am now highly aware of the process, production, and importance of professional sound for podcast listeners – and I know how to make it happen!” ~Jim C., Class 17A Alumni “As a beginner in the world of audio, I really benefited from Chris’s Podcast Engineering School. Chris is a very good professor because he was very interactive with every single classmate and very patient with all the help he would give. After graduating I feel WAY more confident producing audio than I ever would have without this program. Overall, I highly recommend PES to anyone interested in learning the straight to the point no fluff version of professional audio engineering for podcast production.” ~Erika K., Class 17A Alumni “The Podcast Engineering School is an absolutely stellar course. It’s amazingly thorough while remaining focused on providing you exactly what you need to become a professional podcast producer.” ~Bryan E., Class 17A Alumni “Podcast Engineering School is a worthwhile and valuable investment for anyone who wants to produce a high quality podcast. Chris is very attentive and accessible for participants, and each class session went far beyond my expectations in terms of what I hoped to learn. Best of all, it’s all very practical, and I’m able to apply it immediately so I can “SOUND GREAT!” ~Barry G., Class 18B Alumni “I learned tons about recording, mixing tracks, adding effects to create higher quality podcasts, and so much more. I’m already applying these skills big time. Chris is a great teacher who really knows what he’s talking about when it comes to sound engineering. Overall, I would highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to improve their podcast production skills by leaps and bounds.” ~Ben L., 15 yrs old, Class 17A Alumni “If you’re thinking of signing up for Podcast Engineering School, do yourself a favor and sign up now. In Which I Take Issue With Chris Curran Our loyal listeners may have noticed that our opening drumbeat, courtesy of our good friend Chris Curran, features Ralph’s name. But I want to know why Ralph gets top – and only – billing? Is this the Ralph show? I think not. So I issued a challenge to Chris to work my name into a drumbeat. Creatively. Let’s see what we get. Another Apology Last week Ralph apologized to various people and today I have to issue my own apology, to the great nation of the USA. In last week’s episode I mistakenly mentioned the Whopper as being an item you could eat at Mc Donald’s. Travesty! Are there enough mea culpas? I wonder. In Which We Admire Chris Curran After I expressed my demand for a drum track with my name in it, Ralph mentioned something that Chris did with his businesses that was very clever. Chris has a couple of businesses. One is called Podcast Engineering School, which teaches people how to professionally record, mix, master and engineer podcasts. The school is for people who want a career in podcasting. The other is called Podfudge, an agency that provides editing and marketing services to podcasters. Chris had one of his engineering school graduates produce The Podcast Engineering Show, which is Chris’s podcast. The show sounds great, which goes to prove that Chris is churning out qualified professionals who even HE is willing to hire and trust with his own show. He also hires his grads for his editing business. And Ralph thinks that’s pretty smart. It’s a way to market your product (in this case, school) – not by saying how great you are and not by talking about all the wonderful things you do – but by actually showing it. Show Don’t Tell We had an experience a few weeks ago where we went to a business dinner with colleagues, and in the course of the conversation we gave some advice to one of them about how he might improve his Facebook ads. A few days later, we were at a networking meeting with this same colleague. He stood up and told the room that after implementing our advice, he immediately got seven new leads for his business. We didn’t have to tell people that we know what we’re doing. He told them for us. And that’s worth more than any dollar amount you can spend on an ad. I know a woman who knits clothing. And she wears her own clothing. So when she’s out and someone says, “Hey, nice sweater!” She tells them she makes them for a living. It’s a great way to demonstrate that she stands by her own product. When you do a good job for people, when you stand by what you do, then your work will speak for itself. And if other people speak for you, all the better! A Travel Wrapup Last week we talked about our trip, what we spent and how we can budget next time. This week we summarize a Top Ten list of easy ways to save money so you can travel even if you don’t have a big budget. Bring food. Grabbing Mc Donald’s, grabbing a coffee or a donut or a snack can really add up. Eat at your destination but avoid expensive food traps. Bring water. Don’t spend two bucks a bottle at a convenience store when you can spend two bucks a case at the grocery store. Go where the tourists aren’t. Go to a beach town during the winter or the desert in the summer. It may not be your idea of the perfect vacation but you can still get away and do it a whole lot cheaper. Camp. If you’re adventurous, grab a tent and pitch it. Some campgrounds have great amenities like wifi and electricity. Use apps. Hotel apps can help you get really good deals. If you don’t mind the risk, you can get some great deals by just showing up and getting what’s left. Be flexible. Do things that you might ordinarily think you don’t want to do. With the right mindset you can make the best of things you might not have expected to enjoy. Use a credit card with points. Whether you get points that you can use for a purchase later, or cash back that you can use to pay for whatever you charged, take advantage of the opportunity. Find a library. The wifi is free and it’s a great place to work. Plus, if you’re the camping type, you can use the library to work instead of sitting in a tent all day. Hub it. Find one place to stay and travel out from there instead of moving from place to place. You can get much better deals on rooms sometimes when you stay a few weeks or a month. Keep receipts. If you’re working and traveling, you can write off at least part of the trip on your tax return, and that can save you money. Let People Help You We share war stories today about people who insist on doing things themselves. Ralph talks about trying to help our friend Sophia with her website, only to be un-helped by her interfering. To be fair, Ralph volunteered to help and Sophia wanted to make things easier for him – by doing some of them herself. The problem arose when she started doing things she didn’t understand, which got in the way of what Ralph was doing and ended up making everything take a lot longer and be a lot more complicated. In the end, they both could have handled it differently. Ralph by being clear about his role and what he would do, and Sophia by simply letting him do it. But we get it. When someone helps you, you feel a certain responsibility. You’re grateful, and you may feel bad about adding to someone’s workload. If that’s you, and someone has offered to help you, let them! Just find another way to thank them. A few weeks ago we called a colleague in the HVAC business to help us with a furnace problem. We didn’t ask or expect him to do it for free, but he did. Instead of freaking out and worrying about it, we simply bought him and his wife a gift certificate for dinner. People like to help. YOU probably like to help. So let people help you when they can, and then be grateful. Sometimes that’s enough. If you can return the favor, do it. DIY Madness Sophia wanted to be considerate of someone who was helping her so she tried to do things herself. But some people do things because they simply can’t NOT do them. We had a client for a month who micromanaged everything we did with his website, until we finally gave him his money back and told him he wasn’t ready to hire someone. He ended up getting a college kid to do it because he could sit there and point over her shoulder and bark orders. But at what cost? He could have afforded to hire someone. He just refused to. He wanted to control it himself. Except while he was micromanaging his website, he was not out selling. People who do everything themselves risk two consequences. One is doing a thing wrong. Professionals are professionals for a reason. We don’t replace furnaces or fix car engines, we call professionals. We don’t know how to do their job they way they do. We don’t know what we don’t know. The second is the opportunity cost. What are you NOT doing when you’re doing something you could have delegated? Delegating is a skill that more people need to learn. We Want To Eat Sophia’s Cows But that’s an apology for next time. Audio Pizza | More Than Just a Sound Bite. Reviews, Tutorials and Commentary by and for the Blind

http://traffic.libsyn.com/iblindtech/AP-005-TalkingMedia.mp3   In the utterly professional manner you've come to expect from the Audio Pizza team, we discuss the options available when it comes to accessible media. While Kayaker hosts and tries to remember his own name, Shaun discusses everything video. With Netflix being the only mainstream video on demand service that offers anything close to a reasonable amount of audio described content, we see just what other options are out there including the audio only Blindy TV and the new 100% audio described streaming service Tell Me TV. Also just why is there so little choice when it comes to accessible televisions and set top boxes, and could the perfect solution to on tap audio description already exist in the form of a smartphone app? Next, we move on to books. With the excellent Audible service offering convenient access to the latest audio books but at a price we look at what services are available in the US, UK & Australia that offer audio books for free.  Such as RNIB Overdrive, Vision Australia and Baird or even your local library. To wrap up, we find out what books and shows we're enjoying at the moment and just why Kayaker loves Game of Thrones so much. Because of My Podcast - I Got to Go To The Largest Event in My Niche 2:05 Cale Nelson from hamradio360.com wanted to go to world's largest Ham Radio event. He wanted to go, but had these pesky things called kids that need silly things like food, clothes, and shelter. So this didn't leave Cale with money to spend on his hobby of podcasting. Well a few listeners said he should try putting together a funding campaign, and so he did. Did he get the money he needed? Well he didn't get the 100% needed. He got 220% he needed! He did this providing VALUE for shirts, hats, shipping, etc. The cool thing is Cale had the courage to try a crowd funding. It could've blown up in his face. Instead his audience came through and he got to attend with all of his expenses paid.  Why You Should Attend Events I went to Podcast Movement last year. I went to a session to support my friend Steve Stewart. After his session some guy named Glenn Hebert got up to speak. You may heave heard me mention Glenn the Geek from the Horse Radio Network (Glenn has 20+ advertisers on his network). I saw Glenn do an impromptu speach. That lead to me asking him to come on the show. That lead to a relationship where Glenn asked me to speak at Podfest last year. That lead to me being interviewed for a documentary about podcasting. Which has now lead me to being asked to help with the film. The film is going to be AWESOME. I will be setting creating relationships with people who you will hear on this show. I have found co-hosts. Here are come cool places to go Podcast Movement - July 5-6 Chicago, (use the coupon sop40) Podcast MidAtlantic  September 9-10 NJ New Media Europe - June 18, 19 Podcast Success Summit - Online 89 Speakers Podfest February 23-25 Orlando Podcast Bingeing 22:54 The Moose Falulence Podcast (joke)  I found a new podcast that I'm really loving. It does the two things that I really like. As a teacher, I love to learn. As a human, I love to laugh. When you can have me doing both, I'm a fan for life. I discovered a show called the Pub from "the Current" (itunes). The host is Adam Ragusea and he takes current news, and dissects it uses it as a learning tool. The latest episode had him picking apart an interview of Donald Trump. This wasn't for the content, but to look at the strategy of how the interviewer approached the subject. He is not afraid to bite the hands that feed him (the media) and backs up his opinion with great insights. He's a Journalist in Residence and Visiting Assistant Professor of Journalism at the Center for Collaborative Journalism at Mercer University in Macon, Ga. He’s also reported for public radio shows including Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Here & Now, Marketplace and The Takeaway. Before becoming a journalist, Adam studied music composition, and he creates all the music for The Pub. If you want to keep up with the media, or if you're tired of all the "Podcasts about podcasting" (but still want to improve your show), you might give this a listen. Finding Your Audience - Tools 27:10 Don't just Google, go and advanced Google search where you can exclude things you don't want at https://www.google.com/advanced_search Check out barndi Youn'gs article on advanced Google Searches Find People on twitter, but use the advanced twitter. https://twitter.com/search-advanced?lang=en You can use a tool like http://buzzsumo.com/ You type in keywords and it'll show you what's being read in your space in the last year, two years, etc. 30Cast.com Helps Podcasters  30Cast is a new service launching next month to help podcasters find music to use in your podcast. :30cast offers fully produced tracks that fit any theme, topic, vibe, or feel. Each piece of music is 30 seconds long (not my favorite part of this idea). This is not for a person who wants to be a DJ and play the entire song. Pricing will be 9.99 for a one time use 24.99 for a month 49.99 for three months 89.99 for six months $129 for a full year.  During the time your license is active, you can use that piece of music in as many podcasts as you want. This is not for major label music. This is indie musicians that make professional sounding music.    From the Audience As if 35 podcasts weren't enough to keep up with, you gave me a 36th to listen to. Now I'm binge-listening to The Podcast Engineering Show.   As a compulsive gear-head and self-confessed audio snob, it's the kind of show I've been hoping for. Having been podcasting myself since 2008, I'm well beyond "how do you set up a mix-minus?" and "what is gain-staging?"   And because the tea leaves were pretty clear to me 3-4 years ago, I knew that serious podcasters were going to have to step up their audio engineering game. Plus, I love this kind of crap.   So Dave, thanks for adding yet another podcast to my life. I'll have to look through the list of shows and unsubscribe from one of them to restore balance to my life. But don't worry, it won't be yours!   Best,   Max www.airplanegeeks.com   Muhhamad Ali Follow Up 44:07 Last week I did a segment on what Podcasters could learn from Muhammad Ali. I wasn't sure how this would go over. I was a little worried, but it interested me so I went with it. Apparently, it interested you as well as I had a few people email me to say that they enjoyed the episode.   One last thing I have also learned about Ali since last week. One movie I watched explained how he was somewhere with Jim Brown who was basically a Super Hero who played for the Cleveland Browns. He went to Jim and said, "Let's go for a walk and talk to some people." He was always above serving and connecting with his audience.   The Naked Episode46:23 I had a few people comment on the Naked Episode. This was an episode I did with just the Audio technica ATR2100 microphone and Audacity. This was to show you that you don't need to spend $1600 on equipment. I've had a few people say to me, "I don't hear a difference." This proves my point that we can sit in a room with our headphones squished into our head, but for the person on the bus, subway, walking the dog, etc. Nobody hears these subtle differences that the extra hardware creates. I actually had one person that thought it sounded better Latest Podcast Reviews 47:49 I subscribed to Dave's School of Podcasting after listening to several episodes of his show. There are other people out there who teach podcasting with a bit more hype, pomp and circumstance, but I don't believe that those methods will produce long term results. What I like about Dave is he seems to actually care not only about people individually, but about the podcasting field in general. Dave will never tell you to exchange reviews. I know this practice exists, and yes, of course I've been tempted to go this route myself, but think about it.... why should you get someone to review your show who will never listen to it? Don't you want REAL listeners to review your show? You will only gain listeners by producing great content and marketing your show to actual potential listeners. Also don't be fooled by Dave's humility. He really knows his stuff and if you spend a few shows listening to him, you'll start to learn it too. I've greatly improved my podcasting skills by listening to his show, and being a member of his School of Podcasting hasn't hurt either because he always answers my questions, usually within an hour of my emailing him. If you are going to pay for a podcasting coach, the value you get from the School of Podcasting can't be beat. - BirdBrain 99 It's not boring and you do learn new things on each episode. - VeronicaMoreno010308 Courtesy of My Podcast Reviews Your reviews are deeply appreciated. Leave you review today. Don't Compare Yourself to Others There is always someone better, and someone worse than you. Today we heard from Cale Nelson, and how he is impacting people (and how he is being impacted). We never mentioned his numbers.
