In this episode is Claire Coleman one of the most trusted, familiar and respected names in beauty journalism. She is known for being thorough, relying heavily on evidence and science to debunk myths or bring clarity to the latest attention-grabbing headlines. In fact, she is so detail-oriented that I've been calling her The Forensic Beauty Journalist for years. Claire is also a returning guest to the podcast and my friend. She is someone to whom I regularly go for advice and to find out what she thinks about certain topics because she is so thoughtful and considered. Claire doesn't tend to put pen to paper or indeed open her mouth unless she has thought through what she is going to say. It's why I thought a ride through her life lessons would make for an interesting conversation and also because I'll take any opportunity to quiz her about pretty much anything because her perspective is always helpful. To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now. Essays on speculative/science fiction explore the futures that feed our most cherished fantasies and terrifying nightmares, while helping diverse communities devise new survival strategies for a tough millennium. The explosion in speculative/science fiction (SF) across different media from the late twentieth century to the present has compelled those in the field of SF studies to rethink the community's identity, orientation, and stakes.  In Ida Yoshinaga, Sean Guynes, and Gerry Canavan's edited volume Uneven Futures: Strategies for Community Survival from Speculative Fiction (MIT Press, 2022), more than forty writers, critics, game designers, scholars, and activists explore core SF texts, with an eye toward a future in which corporations dominate both the means of production and the means of distribution and governments rely on powerful surveillance and carceral technologies. The essays, international in scope, demonstrate the diversity of SF through a balance of popular mass-market novels, comics, films, games, TV shows, creepypastas, and more niche works. SF works explored range from Riot Baby by Tochi Onyebuchi, 2084: The End of the World by Boualem Sansal, Terra Nullius by Claire Coleman, Watchmen and X-Men comics, and the Marvel film Captain America: The Winter Soldier, to the MaddAddam trilogy by Margaret Atwood, The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin, The Wandering Earth by Liu Cixin, and the Wormwood trilogy by Tade Thompson. In an era in which ecological disaster and global pandemics regularly expose and intensify deep political-economic inequalities, what futures has SF anticipated? What survival strategies has it provided us? Can it help us to deal with, and grow beyond, the inequalities and injustices of our times? Unlike other books of speculative/science fiction criticism, Uneven Futures uses a think piece format to make its critical insights engaging to a wide audience. The essays inspire visions of better possible futures—drawing on feminist, queer, and global speculative engagements with Indigenous, Latinx, and Afro- and African futurisms—while imparting important lessons for political organizing in the present. To celebrate the end of 2019, we've re-released our highest rating fiction interviews of the year: #2 is Claire Coleman, Krissy Kneen, Pitchaya Sudbanthad and Michelle Tanmizi live at Ubud Writers and Readers Festival. Speculative fiction has lurked in the shadows of the literary scene for years while realism hogged the limelight. Now, as the natural and political spheres crumble around us, speculative fiction's dystopian worlds don't seem so different from our own. In this timely conversation, our panelists ask whether we're now at the point where all contemporary fiction is in fact speculative fiction. Claire G. Coleman is a Wirlomin Noongar woman whose ancestral Country is in South Coast Western Australia. Her novel Terra Nullius won a Black&Write! Fellowship and a Norma K Hemming Award, and has been shortlisted for The Stella Prize and an Aurealis Award. The Old Lie is her second novel. Krissy Kneen is the award-winning author of the memoir Affection and five novels including Stella Prize shortlisted An Uncertain Grace. She is also the author of Thomas Shapcott Award-winning poetry collection Eating My Grandmother. She has written and directed documentaries for Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Special Broadcasting Service television.  Pitchaya Sudbanthad is the author of the novel Bangkok Wakes to Rain, published by Riverhead Books (US) and Sceptre (UK). He has received fellowships in fiction writing from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the MacDowell Colony, and currently splits time between Bangkok, Thailand and Brooklyn, USA.  Michelle Tanmizi is Chinese-Indonesian and international. She is an author, leadership coach and trainer, and a motivational speaker. Michelle's first work was a poetry book, Truth. Late Dawn is her first speculative science fiction novel inspired by the conservation crisis we face today.  About The Garret You can also follow The Garret on Twitter and Facebook, or follow our host Astrid Edwards on Twitter or Instagram. Claire Coleman (@featuresjourno/@featuresjourno) is a writer who, if you listen to the show regularly, will have heard referenced as a 'forensic beauty journalist' who loves nothing more than getting her teeth stuck into a clinical trial.  As people who write about beauty we sit in the space between brands and the consumer offering an objective point of view about what a brand is up to in order to better help you make good decisions about how to spend your money. Claire's approach is to listen to what the brands have to say, but also by deep-dive into the independent data, clinical trials and by doing her own research into ingredients, innovations and developments. She does not care for fluff and nonsense and in this episode I ask her about her approach to writing about products, what she looks for from brands, what products, ingredients and innovations she thinks are worth paying attention to and what you should flat-out not get duped by. Take her on her word, she's very happy for you to tweet her @featuresjourno and you can read more of her work and find out more about Claire by visiting her website here >> https://www.clairecoleman.com/  As a result of our conversation Claire has created a list of products she would be happy to recommend - they can be found on her website here >> https://www.clairecoleman.com/blog-1 Claire mentioned these links/studies in the show and the links can be found below: Sam Farmer on parabens is here (8th question down) :http://www.samfarmer.co/education-click-question-read-my-response The study about lavender oil and breast tissue is here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17267908 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Ree Lodge (@reallyree) and her website www.reallyree.com are the 'breaking news' of beauty. If it's launching, it's on her site, which is about to undergo a massive redesign, and being first, thorough and correct is of paramount importance to Ree. In this episode Ree talks to me about the early days of Really Ree, of joining twitter on a whim, writing blog posts, but also what life had looked like before she dominated the beauty news arena. She talks to me about her career in recruitment, where you could argue her competitive nature was born, and why she went from a high-paid job into a passion role and how she's gone on to monetise the latter. It's a really robust conversation where we cover topics including self-preservation, the idea of luck, guilt, motivation and she shares a brilliant piece of advice for anyone going after what they want in life: “You haven't failed unless you give up.” — Ree Also in this episode... It was a busy week in beauty and among other things I went to the launch party for Real Techniques new collection Powder Bleu launching July 2017 - a new variety of brushes designed to be used with powder. The six-piece collection includes a Soft Complexion Brush, £22, a Soft Powder Brush, £22, Soft Finishing Brush, £22, Soft Shader Brush, £15, Soft Kabuki Brush, £25 and Plush Powder Puff, £12. The event was held in the Blue Room at The Curtain Hotel in Shoreditch and hosted by Sam Chapman and Nic Haste Chapman and included readings from the Psychic Sisters and entertainment from Britain's Got Talent Finalists DNA. The food from Red Rooster was next-level and reminded me of Hart of Dixie, which is never a bad thing.  There are certain events that are just joyful and hanging out with Sam and Nic is always such a pleasure (listen to their podcast here) but also some of my favourite beauty colleagues; Sali Hughes, Nadine Baggott, Really Ree, Madeleine Spencer, Claire Coleman, Jo Glanville-Blackburn and many more...
