Description:What does it look like to strive ardently for justice and equality without losing yourself in the process? Today, Jen sits down with Norah O'Donnell—award-winning journalist, anchor, and managing editor of the CBS Evening News—for a conversation about courage, compassion, and the women who have quietly shaped the arc of American history. Norah's new book, We the Women: The Hidden Heroes Who Shaped America, uncovers the stories of women who refused to disappear: printers and poets, doctors and intellectuals, community builders and policymakers, women who risked safety, status, and belonging to tell the truth, expand freedom, and insist that dignity belongs to everyone. In this episode, we reflect on what these lives reveal about compassion—not as sentiment, but as action. Jen, Amy, and Norah talk about the indomitable women who made justice visible, who challenged power without losing their moral center, and who built systems of care that outlived them. The conversation also turns inward, as Norah reflects on her own career as one of the most trusted voices in American broadcast journalism, regularly asking hard questions in public spaces and of people in positions of power. This is a conversation about fierce compassion—the kind that tells the truth, draws boundaries, builds community, and refuses erasure. It's an invitation to remember the women who came before us, and to consider how we might carry their courage forward in our own time. Thought-provoking Quotes: “I think that journalists are doing an incredible job right now under really tough circumstances. But they're bringing to light what the power of the federal government, what the power of state governments and others are doing, and allowing the electorate to be informed so that they can get involved, they can vote, they can be energized, and each of us can be part of this great American democracy.” – Norah O'Donnell “I do believe we need more women in government and more women in positions of power.” - Norah O'Donnell “I'm in the business of information not affirmation.” – Norah O'Donnell “Women have been at the forefront of helping to bend that arc towards justice. Women have crashed through the educational glass ceiling. More women get degrees than men. Women have the right to vote and they do vote in greater numbers than men. So when are we gonna see this tipping point? I keep waiting for that in my lifetime.” – Norah O'Donnell Resources Mentioned in This Episode: We the Women: The Hidden Heroes Who Shaped America by Norah O'Donnell - https://amzn.to/4keE2Hb We The Women Tour - https://www.wethewomenbook.com/about CBS News | Norah O'Donnell - https://www.cbsnews.com/team/norah-odonnell/ The Six Triple Eight | Netflix - https://www.netflix.com/title/81590591 Mary McLeod Bethune Statue - https://www.aoc.gov/explore-capitol-campus/art/mary-mcleod-bethune-statue The Declaration of Sentiments - https://www.nps.gov/wori/learn/historyculture/declaration-of-sentiments.htm Guest's Links: Website - https://www.cbsnews.com/team/norah-odonnell/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/norahodonnell/ Twitter - https://x.com/NorahODonnell Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/norahodonnell/ TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@norahodonnell?lang=en Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy. Eternally Amy - A Sober Mom of Eight's Journey from Jail to Joy
Amy reunites with her dear friend Dr. Sarah Michaud for a rich, emotional Boozeless Book Club conversation about Charlotte Kasl's “Many Roads, One Journey.” Together they unpack fear-based systems, patriarchal conditioning, codependency, and the long-term work of building identity outside dogma. It's honest, layered, and exactly the kind of dialogue that reminds you you're not alone on your own recovery path.Key Takeaways• Kasl's work invites women to question rigid systems—religion, recovery, and culture—that shape identity through fear and shame. • Amy reflects on trading one dogma for another and how belonging once overrode her self-trust. • They examine how AA slogans, spiritual axioms, and “my way or the highway” thinking can unintentionally reinforce fear. • Codependency runs deep, especially for women socialized to prioritize harmony over needs. • Recovery is never one-size-fits-all—every person deserves a path that supports autonomy, dignity, and choice.Timestamped Key Moments[00:00:00] Amy reflects on dogmatic rules, belonging, and fear-based conditioning. [00:01:00] Amy welcomes listeners back and introduces Dr. Sarah. [00:02:00] Amy discusses how she pushed Sarah into reading the book. [00:03:00] Amy reacts to the density of Kasl's work. Today, we're venturing to a corner of Europe that feels like a world all its own - the Basque Country. Straddling Spain and France, this is a place where ancient traditions meet avant-garde cuisine, where surfers ride some of the best waves in Europe, and where you can hear one of the oldest living languages on the continent. There's a saying in Basque, “Izena duenak izana du,” which means, “That which has a name, exists.” The Basque Country is a place that names its mountains, its winds, its waves – and by doing so, keeps its ancient identity alive. Joining me today is Frederic Du Coral, who takes us deep into this interesting culture. We talk about everything from medieval history to the modern spirit of resilience that defines the region today. Looking to book a luxury hotel? In this episode of the Review of Democracy podcast, Alexandra Medzibrodszky speaks with Patricia Owens, renowned professor of international relations at Oxford, about her bold and revelatory new book, Erased: A History of International Thought Without Man (Princeton University Press, 2025). Owens exposes the hidden foundations ofinternational relations in Britain, not as a field founded solely by elite white men, but one deeply shaped by the intellectual work of women—figures such as Margery Perham, Merze Tate, Eileen Power, and Susan Strange—whose ideas andinfluence have long been buried under layers of academic erasure.Owens shares the story behind her archival detective work, the personal and professional struggles of these women, and how their exclusion from the canon fundamentally weakened the intellectual foundations of IR. This is more than a story of forgotten contributions—it is a powerful call to confront the gendered and racialised roots of scholarly disciplines. Tune in for a compelling discussion that challenges the way wewrite and remember the history of ideas.

AmazonSpotifyYoutubeTiktokInstagram BioECHASL is a dynamic and emerging artist whose music blends Eastern and Western influences, creating a distinctive sound that transcends traditional genre boundaries. Hailing from China, she showcases the richness of her cultural heritage while merging it with contemporary Western styles. Her debut single, "I Know U Know," offers a captivating listening experience, driven by her powerful voice and unique fusion of instruments. This track serves as both a debut for ECHASL and a preview of her upcoming album, Little Black Sheep. It also acts as a protest song, addressing discrimination, including sexism and racism. The song is inspired by the true story of the first Chinese woman documented to have arrived in the United States. Tricked and sold to a circus, she became an exhibit for audiences, dehumanized and objectified. ECHASL's poignant lyrics and storytelling bring to life the emotional journey of this historical figure, while advocating for racial and gender equality.Musically, "I Know U Know" blends the ancient Chinese gu qin (a traditional stringed instrument) with Western double bass and a pop-infused drum beat, creating a rich tapestry of sounds that defy categorization. The result is a harmonious fusion of pop, electronic, and alternative music, enhanced by ECHASL's extraordinary vocal range. From a deep contralto to a soaring soprano, she effortlessly navigates multiple styles, including R&B, rock, and even country, showcasing her versatility as a vocalist.Lyrically, the song captures the emotional depth of a young Chinese girl's tragic story, while the accompanying video incorporates elements from both Eastern and Western cultures to further convey the theme of unity and acceptance. ECHASL's message is clear: despite our differences, we are all the same.Currently in her final semester at the Berklee College of Music, ECHASL is studying songwriting and musical theater performance. She relocated to the United States at the age of 13 and began her music career in 2024. Her artist name, ECHASL, is an acronym for "Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining," reflecting her optimistic approach to creating music. As a hands-on artist, she not only writes her own lyrics but also collaborates closely with producers to craft the sounds she envisions, often pushing the boundaries of conventional music production. The fusion of a gu qin with a double bass is a testament to her innovative approach. Her passion for experimentation extends to other tracks, such as "Butterfly on Fire," where she successfully incorporated bagpipes into her composition—a request she made to her producer, who initially doubted the combination.Eager to share her unique sound with the world, ECHASL is establishing herself in the global music scene. Her music is a powerful reflection of her cultural heritage, personal experiences, and dedication to using her platform to raise awareness about important social issues. Though she doesn't expect her music to change the world, she believes that, as an artist, her voice is a powerful tool for protest and advocacy. With "I Know U Know," she takes a bold step toward blending cultures and speaking out for those who have been silenced. As ECHASL continues to release music, her journey promises to be one of bold creativity and meaningful impact, as she seamlessly fuses Eastern and Western cultures, offering a musical experience unlike any other.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.

I've been pondering power partially because of the election but also because I've been studying the life of a powerful woman in the Scripture. We rarely hear the Church teach on power, let alone about powerful women in Scripture and church history. We hear of women taught as damsels in distress, and we listen to them framed as temptresses. If we hear about a powerful woman like Deborah, we're told she was God's plan B. Then, there is the example of a female villain, Jezebell. What does it mean to have power, and how are we to steward it? Moreover, why don't we feel comfortable with power and Christian women in the same sentence? I've had this conversation about power with women who hold top positions in their work, but when I suggest they are women with power, they squirm. Influence, yes. Impact, yes. But power? It's as if that's a bad mix. What is power? Why are women squeamish about having it? And what should we do with it when we have it?LINKSThe Marcella Project: https://www.themarcellaproject.com/Article:https://fortune.com/2024/08/05/women-will-soon-have-more-money-than-men-first-time-in-history-mackenzie-scott-melinda-gates-playbook-philanthropy/Playing God: https://www.amazon.com/Playing-God-Redeeming-Gift-Power/dp/0830837655Redeeming Power: https://www.amazon.com/Reckoning-Power-Church-Fails-Wrong/dp/1587434156Wood Between Worlds: https://www.amazon.com/Wood-Between-Worlds-Poetic-Theology/dp/151400562X

Debbie Peterson, former mayor of Grover Beach, California, remains passionate about women's representation in public office. She's a first-hand witness to the troubling trend of women being discouraged from running due to the increase in online and in-person attacks. It's also true that many women don't want to work in a culture of confrontation or have their private lives picked apart in public. The result is fewer women pursuing political careers. Understanding the importance of diverse voices in decision-making, Debbie offers experience and advice supporting women contemplating a run for office. She emphasizes resilience and preparation, aiming to empower more women to overcome challenges and take on leadership roles.

In this episode, we have a pretty cool chat with Stephanie Dodier, reformed dieter and coach for women post diet-culture. We dive deep into how society kinda messes with our heads, telling us we need to look a certain way to feel good about ourselves. Dodier brings up something called "the safety of conformity," which is basically about how we mix up feeling safe with actually being confident. Stephanie shares some personal stories -- for example, about being taken to a Weight Watchers meeting when she was just 12. It was a tough moment that stuck with her, making her feel like her body was somehow "wrong." This story set the stage for a lot of what she talked about, like how we chase after this image society wants for us, thinking it'll make us happy or confident, but it's really about feeling safe from judgment. The chat also ventures into how all of this safety stuff isn't just about weight. It ties into aging, health, and money. (Did you ever stop to think about how being worried about money is kind of similar to worrying about weight?) It's all about trying to fit into what we think we're supposed to be. Towards the end, we disuss how facing doubts and insecurities is actually a part of being confident. The real journey is about exploring all of the parts of our lives where we might not feel secure -- and figuring out how to work with them. On this episode, Roy Wang and I speak about the theme of men, women, and power. What is true power vs. false power, and how can the journey towards empowerment sometimes look different for men and women? How can power be a healthy goal for all of us, a spiritual journey, and an essential part of becoming integrated men and women? We speak about so many different expressions of power: physical strength, beauty, authenticity, knowing your true self, and women as oracles. Ultimately, we believe that both men and women can both claim their unique gifts of power in order to help lift each other up vs. compete with each other. This is an essential episode to listen to in order to understand how empowerment is our birthright, how returning to traditional gender roles may not be the way, and what the path forward can look like for collaborative relationships between men + women.Roy Wang is a coach with a mission to help men end cycles of shame, discover their inner strength, awaken to their true self, and be of service to the world. Please reach out to Roy or myself with any comments or questions - we would love to hear your thoughts on this discussion.Connect with Roy below:Roy's websiteRoy's InstagramConnect with Leigh-Anne below:Love, Evolved - Leigh-Anne's websiteLeigh-Anne's InstagramI hope you enjoy this episode - please rate, review and subscribe to support the work.
