The NZ International Comedy Festival is kicking off next week, and to kickstart the shenanigans Chris Parker will be hosting the annual Comedy Gala. The kiwi comedian has cemented himself as one of the country's favourite comics, having done everything from stage shows and stand-up to podcasts and books. He's just returned home from the Melbourne Comedy Festival where he did a total of 22 shows alongside line-ups, a podcast, and various other gigs over the course of a month. He told Newstalk ZB's Jack Tame that there's a lot of people, and a lot of kiwis looking for something familiar. “I'm doing sort of customer service, sort of trying to figure out where my audience is,” Parker said. “And I'm like, ‘oh I see. They're mostly kiwis who are feeling homesick and want to hear an accent again.” The set he performed at the Festival was titled ‘Give Me One Good Reason Why I Shouldn't Throw My Phone Off This Bridge', a title he said was a dramatic reaction to being on his phone too much. “I keep sort of having those like, ‘what if?' moments. I don't know if you feel like whenever you're driving over the Harbour bridge and you're just like, ‘what if?'” Parker asked Tame. “I have that with my phone every morning, or I just want to crush it, you know? Just because I'm just done with it.” Parker appreciates that he built his audience through social media, but he does worry about the impact social media and technology has on those who use it, their attention spans, and the way they connect with others. “When we first had the internet, which is such a joyful place where we talk to men in their forties in chat rooms, and now it's sort of dissolved into this, you know...” “This actually unpleasant place,” Tame chimed in. “It's very interesting,” Parker agreed. This is the crux of the show, he explains, the relationship and dependence we have on social media, Parker even saying that he might go cold turkey on it. He compares the assortment of media consumed in one moment to canapes at an event, a chiropractor video next to world news next to a pasta recipe similar to a bao bun, a prawn twizzler, and a burger all on one plate. “That's a lot of different stuff to be consuming in one moment.” Speaking of canapes and events, Parker rejects the notion that hosting the Comedy Gala is a rough gig. “I am, you know, a serial showoff,” he told Tame. “So, all I'm gagging for is the stage time, and I get more than anyone else! No other acts, it's me for an hour.” The awards are a beautiful thing, he said. Being able to see his colleagues at their best in a four or five minute act, six if they go overtime, it's wonderful. “It gives a real gauge on how we're going as a country in terms of our, you know, comedic landscape, which is like, we're sharper and funnier than ever." “We were storming Melbourne,” Parker revealed. “They were getting angry at how good, at how funny New Zealand was.” In Parker's opinion, this is an amazing time for New Zealand comedy, and while we do celebrate it, we could be better. "Please go out and support live comedy." "Stop watching comedy on your phone, get out, put your phone in the bin, get out of the door and go take a punt on a comedian that you've never heard of before." The International Comedy Festival begins May 3rd in venues across Auckland and Wellington, with select shows occurring around the country. ‘Give Me One Good Reason Why I Shouldn't Throw My Phone Off This Bridge' will be touring New Zealand from June 20th, visiting Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin, Auckland, Wellington, and Rotorua. In this conversation I chat to comedian and writer Nathan Caton (https://twitter.com/NathanCaton)Nathan began performing stand up comedy at the age of 19 and since then he has been on Live at the Apollo, Mock The Week, Don’t Hate The Playaz, Comedy Gala, Russell Howard’s Good News and his own series Gran Jury. He also wrote and performed in his BBC Radio 4 sitcom, Can’t Tell Nathan Caton Nothing and starred in a pilot for Paramount Comedy (now Comedy Central) entitled The Nathan Caton Show. He has also written for the children's series Rastamouse and has appeared several times on the BBC Premier League Show as well as his ever-growing podcast, Nathan Caton’s Football ForumWe kick things off talking about the challenge of switching off and why Nathan finds it hard to take time out from his career. He explains his love hate relationship with social media. Why he felt getting his Comedy Central TV pilot came too early and why he didn’t let it affect him when it didn’t get a series commission. Nathan describes how early on in his stand up career, he tried to balance gigging and getting up for an early morning lecture; while studying architecture and then whilst juggling part time work at Heathrow airport. He breakdown his first Edinburgh Fringe experience and describes life on the road as a touring comedian. We discuss what qualities you need to commit to being a stand up comedian and Nathan explains how his family have instilled a strong work ethic in him. He breaks down the benefit of collaborating with writers who come from a different perspective and point of view and emphasises the importance in staying present to develop new material. We discuss how Nathan switches off from stand up through weight lifting, swimming and doing HIIT work outs and loads more!If you like this episode please do rate and review the podcast on Apple.Happy listening :)Steve - @offkeysteve See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

.I was watching the Great Ormond Street Hospital Chidren’s Comedy Gala……bearing in mind this is a CHILDREN’S charity the language out of the so called comics was disgraceful. I’m no prude but there is a limit…John Bishop opened the show with every other word being the F word…followed by Lee Evans who did the same…and so on…I turned it off in the end…what happened to FUNNY…the occasional swear word can add to a joke but not all the time…these guys need to get themselves some decent script writers….having said that the audience were falling about which must say something about the next generation….I think we can kiss humour goodbye 2.There is to be a series of programmes on TV about football hooligans…..WHY?...who’s bright idea is that?...if that is entertainment it’s time to pack up…..watching bunches of boneheaded morons going out looking for trouble will only encourage other similar types to do the same…I don’t care if they fracture each others skulls as they will feel no pain…but innocent bystanders end up getting hurt for no reason. All this trash TV demonstrates is how little some of us have evolved. 3.The government are going to quadruple speeding fines on motorways…so all these would be Lewis Hamiltons will get a 4 grand wake up call…of course this has caused an outrage amongst certain members of our society…I can’t see the problem…DON’T SPEED…it’s not rocket science….personally anyone doing a ton down the motorway should be flogged and thrown in jail. 4.There have been doubts as to whether true talent is found via TV…Britains Got Talent…X Factor ..etc…..of course not….the poor contestants are only pawns to line Simon Cowell’s pockets (good luck to him…more fool them)….I once knew a chap who went for an X Factor audition….queud from 7.30 in the morning to 5.30 at night….did a three minute audition and it was “Next!”…..it’s BUSINESS…if you want to make permanent money you have to pay your dues…that’s the reality….before we met I sent a song in for the Op Knocks song contest and got through to the final (a young girl sang my song)…met Hughie ..introduced my song etc….all good experience but somewhat fixed…I didn’t win by the way but it opened a few doors.
