What is a social story and HOW can it be of benefit to kids in schools? Today we are learning more about this powerful, but incredibly under utilised therapeutic tool that can be easily embedded in our educational practices as a way of ensuring that our communication is not being lost in translation.Used by the Autistic community for many years, it is time for all school leaders to understand the vital ways in which we can aim to reduce anxiety and emotional distress in kids by helping them understand the where, when, why and what is expected of them.Social Stories are a positive, proactive and preventive measure we can use as a whole school approach to demonstrate our understandings and beliefs that not all kids onboard, process and understand information in the same way.Our guest, Dr. Kathryn Hackman identified a gap between the medical field where she works, and the ways in which we can prepare our kids for medical procedures or needing to go to hospital. These experiences can be incredibly daunting and overwhelming for our children and social stories help them understand what lays ahead in VERY simple, factual information.Kathryn set to work and has created an incredible tool that creates socials stories in a flash - saving you time and effort - and they can even be personalised for kids and she is currently working on a school version.Chrissie has been using social stories in specialist settings, and with her own kids for years! She actually cannot quite believe that more schools have not been implementing this game changing strategy. Maybe after hearing this conversation, they will. You can learn more about the origin of social stories here: https://carolgraysocialstories.com/Courageous Kids here: https://www.courageouskidsapp.com/

The transformative power of storytelling and play in creating familiarity. The importance of emotional preparation over physical preparation for transitions. Practical tips on when and how to manage transitions effectively. Recognizing that transitions extend beyond education and occur in various aspects of our lives. It might be hard to imagine, but the emphasis on "safety" as one of the main goals for parents, was not always the prevailing value that humans sought after. Today, there's an acute obsession with physical and emotional safety. Caution signs and buzzwords like "safe space" and "trigger warnings" permeate societal circles. But "safetyism" actually leads us all to be less safe.    In this episode, I share 3 surprising ways in which a high emphasis on safety actually deteriorates resiliency and 3 strategies you can start practicing now to raise children who are strong - physically, emotionally, and mentally.    ~   Learn more about "safetyism" in the context of fostering independence in young children (starting at the earliest ages!) through the surprising powers of play in Avital's new book, Reclaim Play (reclaimplay.com/book).   We here at Hi Fam want to help you create a family life you love! Is your child about to embark on a transition either from home to childcare or kinder to school? The new year often brings new locations and experiences for our children. There is a level of uncertainty as they are separated from their security blanket of mum and dad potentially for the first time. It's emotional for everyone involved, more so for our children. We like to think children are adaptable and will naturally embrace new situations and surroundings. But, all too often that doesn't happen. There is a range of emotions that come with new surroundings and people, your child is having a normal and natural reaction.  This week on the podcast I speak with Dr. Kathryn Hackman,MBBS PhD FRACP, is a mother and the Founder of Courageous Kids. She's been through the struggle of tricky drop offs, and knows she's not alone, given that anxiety affects 1 in 9 children. Kathryn shares effective and practical strategies to combat separation anxiety in a fuss-free form, that helps busy parents set their kids up for success with new experiences. Kathryn didn't understand what a transition was and the impacts until she became a mum. You may be wondering - what is a transition? To clarify, it is when you go from one environment to another. For children starting childcare, kinder or school, drop off is not as simple as drop and go. Separation is a big factor for children through these key transition phases. Taking a proactive approach through play and storytelling, this can help children become familiar with their new teachers and educators and be a positive transition experience.  A good analogy is our first day of a new job - we are anxious due to new surroundings, a new team, new processes, the uncertainty of the people you will work with and the list goes on. Our children are no different. They are anxious through the transition phase of kinder to school or home to childcare, just like we are on our first day of work.  In this episode we chat about:  Strategies to help build familiarity and trust with your child's educators or carers  The power of storytelling and play to create familiarity  Why the emotional preparation for the transition is more important than the physical  Tips on when and how to manage transitions  Transitions aren't just education based, they happen in all areas of our lives  Why preparation is key to managing transitions  and much more!  This is a great episode with easy-to-implement strategies to support you in managing transitions in your child's life.  For more information about Kathryn and the Courageous Kids app, go to the website www.courageouskidsapp.com or follow on Instagram @courageouskidsapp   If you are looking for community and support as a working mum, check out the Working Mumma Village digital membership workingmumma.com.au/working-mumma-village As always I'd like to connect on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/working-mumma  or Instagram @workingmummacommunity and check out the Working Mumma website workingmumma.com.au   Photo credit: Star News Group

Parents know, letting fear stop us can really hold us back in life. We can each think of a time in childhood we wish we had overcome, or overcome the fear sooner and stepped into being more brave. Being brave doesn't mean we aren't afraid. Being brave means we feel the fear and do it anyway. As adults we know the great benefits of pushing ourselves past our discomfort (even if we struggle sometimes too!) Kid fears often seem so minor to us now. But they are big for them. Regardless of age, how can help your child see past the fear to the benefits of trying and overcoming, toddlers to teens? Like everything, it looks a little different at each age. This podcast had me Courageous from the get go! Dr Kathryn Hackman, a consultant in Endocrinology and I discuss the importance of clear communication with children. That clear communication helps to enhance kids confidence and how this passion led to creating the Courageous Kids App. Dr Kathryn identified that 1 in 14 children suffer from anxiety and how important education and preparation are in reducing this.   Kathryn and I share how she was able to curb her son's anxiety of an upcoming work trip through story telling and preparation. After hearing similar situations and sharing her story with other parents, Kathryn realised this was a problem worth solving and created Courageous Kids(CK). Courageous Kids became an App that tailors stories around children's first ever experiences and creates visual learning plans so kids feel more in control. We share the App building journey, learning curves and the wins throughout the process.   This is a Courageous podcast to tune into for those thinking of creating an App or a parent who is concerned of their child's first ever experiences!   Join our Facebook Group (Katie Turner Media Facebook Group) to chat to Dr Kathryn  or other likeminded community members who are Switching their Sitch,  starting a small business or growing an Empire.

He has a "Bandtwango" campaign called "YES We Can" that he is currently promoting to raise money for a tour of children's hospitals around the country. He recently went to the Center for Courageous Kids in Scottsville, KY to sing and hang out with the kids. Not a real spoiler alert but he said it was moving beyond words. Long story short, Jacob is just a really great human being that is utilizing a platform he has created through a ridiculous amount of hard work to encourage others that they can do the same thing and really anything is possible. Big shout out to Lisa Harless with Regions Bank (per usual) for the introduction and ultimately making all of this happen. Really #grateful4 crossing paths with Jacob and having him involved with the Spread The Positive Community. Thank you for being on the podcast and for all you are doing to Spread The Positive Jacob!

COURAGEOUS KIDS: KIDS TAKEN AWAY FROM PARENTS BY COURTS You’ve seen news articles about it- the child being ripped out of mom’s arms after a court has decided to give custody to someone else. It hurts to watch that sobbing little boy or girl, but in a moment the news moves on to another image, another story. But what happens to those kids? And why are they in that position in the first place? Jennifer Collins was one of those children, when in 1992, she was torn from her mother’s arms and handed over kicking and screaming to the father who had abused her. She and her brother had to live with their father based upon faulty science and a family court that didn’t believe their mother and that didn’t want to listen to the kids. Today, kids are still in the position of being taken away from loving arms, and courts still often don’t want to listen. But today there is an organization of adults who were once those kids. And they want to make it better for everyone. Courageous Kids Network and Jennifer Collins are determined to change this situation, and to offer a voice to those who have none. Join us as we first air this discussion about Courageous Kids, child custody, junk science, and children who grow up victims of the courts. First airing on Saturday, March 3, at 11 AM Pacific Time, and available thereafter through the archive at www.blogtalkradio.com/3women3ways.
