Since its launch in 2019, LifeWise has quickly grown to serve more than 600 schools across the U.S. each week, with over 40,000 students attending LifeWise to receive a Bible class as part of their public school day. Before joining LifeWise Academy, Derek served in a variety of nonprofit community roles. We start this episode by discussing the ongoing controversy surrounding Release Time Religious Instruction (RTRI) in Ohio, spearheaded by LifeWise Academy. This initiative allows public school students to leave school for religious education in the middle of the day, exploiting legal loopholes to introduce religious content into public education. As part of my advocacy against these policies, we expose the tactics being employed by LifeWise representatives, including aggressive legal threats aimed at school districts adopting more cautious policies, particularly concerning promotional materials like treats and trinkets that facilitate recruitment into their programs. Then we do an analysis of President Donald J. Trump's approval ratings after his first 100 days in office during his second administration. We provide insights into how these ratings can serve as a barometer for his political effectiveness, drawing comparisons with historical figures and past administrations. The consensus is clear—Trump's numbers are significantly underwater, reflecting dissatisfaction across multiple demographics and even within core support bases. We assess what Trump's low approval ratings mean for the Republican Party and democracy at large. By drawing parallels with Trump's past actions and the historical context of his presidency, we convey a sense of urgency regarding the potential consequences of his policies and rhetoric. Recent protests against his administration's immigration policies highlight the public's growing discontent and the strategic missteps that may lead to political upheaval. We conclude with a sobering reflection on the tumultuous first 100 days of Trump's presidency and provide a call to action for listeners to engage with their political communities actively while remaining informed.Full Show Notes & LinksSend us a textSupport the showSubscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our MerchFollow us on BlueskyFind us on Twitter(for now) Find us on InstagramFind us on Counter SocialFind us on Mastadon

We dive into the recent tumult surrounding two significant topics affecting public policy and religious freedom in Ohio. The spotlight is first placed on LifeWise Academy's attempts to ingratiate itself into Ohio public schools, alongside the ongoing case involving Dad's Place Church in Bryan, Ohio, as the Ohio Attorney General, David Yost, enters the fray. With rising tensions and opposing viewpoints, Doug dissects these developments, providing new insights into the legal and social landscape of the state. We get a comprehensive update on House Bill 8, a contentious piece of legislation that combines both anti-LGBT elements and provisions for Release Time Religious Instruction (RTRI). Doug reflects on the dynamics at play in the Ohio Senate's late-session debate, highlighting how amendments to the bill were pieced together amidst a growing coalition of concerned residents and advocacy groups opposed to the bill for one reason or another.Moving on to the case of Dad's Place Church, we contextualize the ongoing legal struggles faced by Pastor Chris Avell, who operates a makeshift homeless shelter in his church. A prior agreement between the city and Avell fell apart due to the pastor's lack of adherence to necessary zoning regulations. The situation escalated as the city issued citations, resulting in a federal lawsuit propelled by the Christian nationalist legal organization First Liberty. We discuss how Yost's recent input in support of Avell raises critical questions about government interference in religious endeavors, especially in light of accusations that the city is selectively enforcing regulations against the church under the guise of public safety. We dissect Yost's statements, questioning the narrative of animosity and exploitation that shapes the discourse around this case.Full Show Notes and Links UsedSend us a textSupport the showSubscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our MerchFollow us on BlueskyFind us on Twitter(for now) Find us on InstagramFind us on Counter SocialFind us on Mastadon

We dive deep into the ongoing legislative efforts surrounding LifeWise Academy, a Christian nationalist organization seeking to establish Bible classes in public schools during school hours. As the Ohio State Legislature enters its lame duck session, critical issues have arisen concerning the implications of integrating religious instruction into the public education system. We discuss the irony in religious conservative's opposition to perceived indoctrination in schools while actively working to insert their own bible based curriculum through legislative maneuvering. The pressure mounts on lawmakers to pass bills that could fundamentally alter the nature of public education in Ohio. Notably, Ohio House Bill 445 and Ohio Senate Bill 293 are designed to force school districts to adopt policies that allow for release time religious instruction, which would pull students from their classrooms to attend these sessions. We express concern regarding the pushback from not just secular humanists, but from various religious groups who feel that such actions by LifeWise undermine the integrity of public schooling and violate the principle of separation of church and state and not to mention marginlizes other sects. We share insights into the testimonies from recent hearings, highlighting a significant number of opposition voices who fear the repercussions of allowing any one religious ideology to infiltrate the public school curriculum. We illustrate the disconnect between proponents of these bills and the actual ramifications of their passing. One particularly revealing exchange involves Joel Penton, the CEO of LifeWise, who appears to misunderstand the basis for the pushback against their program. His statement insinuates that the increasing scrutiny of LifeWise's efforts is merely a byproduct of their growing program, while many opponents raise crucial ethical points regarding the integration of religious instruction with public schooling and the potential coercion involved. We look at the real motives behind LifeWise's strategy, emphasizing their aim to recruit and indoctrinate students as young as possible. The proof is in video clips from LifeWise representatives discussing their focus on elementary school children, revealing their planned approach to evangelism within an educational context that raises serious ethical and legal questions. In this episode, we delve into the current legislative climate in Ohio as the state legislature rushes through a series of controversial bills during the lame duck session. The urgency to pass these bills stems from the impending expiration of the General Assembly at the end of December, compelling lawmakers to push through legislation that aligns with their agendas. One such bill is an alarming proposal would force public-schools to allow LifeWise Academy, an evangelical organization, to conduct religious instruction during school hours, undermining the secular nature of public education. The bills — House Bill 445 and Senate Bill 293 — would mandate public school districts to adopt a release time religious instruction policy, facilitating LifeWise's access to students for indoctrination under the guise of education. We emphasize the inconsistencies in the motivations of those advocating for such legislation, noting the hypocrisy of their concerns about indoctrination when it comes to secular subjects like critical race theory, while simultaneously promoting religious teachings in public schools. The episode features insights from bill hearings earlier this month, where key figures, including LifeWise founder Joel Penton, faced scrutiny over the lack of guidelines for their proposed programs. In a particular clip, Penton struggles to understand why there is growing opposition to LifeWise's encroachment into public education, attributing it to their increasing popularity rather than genuine concerns about the integrity of educational institutions and the rights of parents and children.Throughout the episode, we juxtapose comments made by LifeWise representatives with those of concerned parents and activists, such as Keith Comer, drawing attention to a disturbing trend where religious entities are increasingly seeking to integrate their agendas into public education under the cover of community service. Interestingly, the conversation shifts to how these legislative machinations are not just about religious freedom, but about securing a foothold for a particular ideology within our educational framework. Finally, we reflect on the implications of these policies if enacted, questioning whether public schools should be used as platforms for religious indoctrination under any circumstance. This episode serves not only as a critique of specific bills but as an urgent appeal for vigilance in protecting educational integrity from sectarian influences.Full show notes and links usedSend us a textSupport the showSubscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our MerchFind us on Twitter(for now) Find us on InstagramFind us on Counter SocialFind us on Mastadon

Host Douglas Berger recently gave a presentation at the First Unitarian Church of Toledo, where he addressed the controversial topic of Release Time Religious Instruction (RTRI) in Ohio, with a particular focus on LifeWise Academy, which aims to provide religious education during the school day. We start by defining RTRI, explaining its legal background, and detailing how LifeWise Academy, founded by Joel Penton, operates within the law to remove children from public school to teach them biblical principles. Douglas argues that while this practice may be legal, it poses serious ethical and practical challenges for public education. LifeWise's mission, as explained, is not to simply provide voluntary religious educational opportunities, but rather to convert public schools into platforms for religious indoctrination, which we believe undermines the common good that public schools are meant to serve. Throughout the discussion, Douglas highlights the potential dangers of LifeWise Academy's approach, citing Penton's belief that public schools are essentially a mission field for spreading their religious teachings. We emphasize that these programs disrupt the school day and divert essential resources, arguing that instead of using taxpayer dollars to support a religious curriculum, we should ensure that public schools remain a neutral space that serves all students, regardless of their beliefs. Douglas walks listeners through the legal framework of RTRI, including significant Supreme Court cases that have shaped its implementation. He notes the troubling patterns he has observed, such as deceptive marketing strategies employed by LifeWise to promote their programs in local schools, and the lack of transparency and accountability in how they operate. Particular concern is raised about the extreme religious views sometimes promulgated in these classes, which include provocative teachings on gender and biblical sacrifice directed at very young children, arguably undermining inclusive education. Douglas urges listeners to become active participants in local educational governance by attending school board meetings, forming coalitions against the expansion of RTRI programs, and advocating for clear policies that safeguard the integrity of public education. I provide practical steps for community members, including potential legislative actions that would amend current policies governing RTRI, and highlight the importance of documenting any abuses or violations tied to these programs. We look into the murky waters of political dishonesty prevalent during the current election cycle, particularly focusing on the blatant lies propagated in political advertisements. With election day swiftly approaching, it's easy to lose sight of the facts amidst the barrage of misleading ads from large PACs like the Congressional Leadership Fund and American Prosperity Fund. Unlike other forms of advertising that are subject to regulatory scrutiny, political ads enjoy the protections of the First Amendment, allowing candidates to misrepresent facts without penalty. Then we look at the recent vice presidential debate, which we approach with skepticism, arguing that these events are mere vehicles for candidates to produce soundbites for future commercials rather than genuine discussions of policy. C.F. Vance's performance is scrutinized, particularly his fabrications regarding Trump's stance on Obamacare. The focus shifts to Trump's ongoing legal battles, highlighting the critical distinction made by prosecutor Jack Smith about what constitutes official actions versus private actions in the context of election interference. It's crucial for voters to grasp that the president's attempts to influence the election were not part of his official duties—a point we argue could play a significant role in the upcoming election.Next we grapple with the aftermath of a devastating hurricane that recently struck Florida and made its way through the southeast. The political ramifications of disaster recovery aid, particularly the outrage from conservatives about federal assistance, are examined. We clarify the purpose of the $750 immediate assistance offered by FEMA, juxtaposing it against the broader and more complex recovery efforts needing more time to be processed. This sense of urgency is contrasted with the indifference displayed by congressional leaders who postpone aid packages for political gain.Lastly, we celebrate a recent victory for school districts standing up against LifeWise Academy — an evangelical initiative that seeks to impose religious instruction during the school day, rather than as an extracurricular activity. We break down the controversy surrounding a school board in Westerville, Ohio, which voted to rescind its policy that allowed LifeWise to operate during school hours. This decision was driven not only by concerns over curriculum disruption and liability but also by broader implications about maintaining the secular integrity of public education. LifeWise's attempts to portray itself as a victim of circumstance and its extensive funding sources underscore the lengths to which such organizations will go to infiltrate public schools.Full Show Notes plus LinksSend us a textSupport the showSubscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our MerchFind us on Twitter(for now) Find us on InstagramFind us on Counter SocialFind us on Mastadon

We investigate the political tactics of the Republican Party as we approach the election season, highlighting their reliance on divisive rhetoric around immigration rather than substantive policy proposals. With a convicted felon leading the party, it's become apparent that their strategy is to invoke fear rather than offer solutions. We examine how they've resurrected the illegal immigrant narrative to scare voters, particularly targeting older white demographics and the more gullible segments of their base. We debunk the myths surrounding undocumented immigrants voting, emphasizing the legal complexities and safeguarding mechanisms in place that prevent such occurrences.Transitioning to a critical toolkit developed to counter the rise of Christian nationalism in public education, we share insights from Doug's involvement with the Honesty for Ohio Education advocacy group. This toolkit serves as a comprehensive guide for parents, educators, and community members looking to navigate the treacherous waters of Release Time Religious Instruction (RTRI) policies, which allow students to leave school for religious instruction during the day. We explain the manipulative strategies deployed by groups like Lifewise Academy, which disguises its religious agenda under a veneer of character-based education, while the reality is an aggressive attempt to convert schoolchildren to Christianity.A major component of the tool-kit is a critical review of the data backing Lifewise Academy's claims of positive outcomes for students participating in their program. By exposing the statistical manipulation and selective reporting methodologies, we argue that such claims are more about marketing than genuine educational benefits. Good education should prioritize the well-being and development of the student, free from religious indoctrination.Full show notesSend us a textSupport the showSubscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our MerchFind us on Twitter(for now) Find us on InstagramFind us on Counter SocialFind us on Mastadon
Nick Fish is our guest. He is the fourth president of American Atheists in its 60-year history. We discuss his journey to the organization, the strategic plan for the next 60 years, the current climate of religious freedom in the U.S., and how groups can collaborate to uphold secular values. The conversation shifts towards the introduction of a new strategic plan by American Atheists aimed at fostering community, advocating for equality, and fighting for secularism in government. Nick outlines the importance of emphasizing religious pluralism while centering the voices of atheists in national discourse. Nick expresses concerns about the health of religious freedom in the U.S., especially regarding the rising influence of Christian nationalism. He criticizes the misleading narratives regarding religious freedom propagated by some groups that actually seek religious supremacy rather than equality. Nick also gives his thoughts about Released Time Religious Instruction programs like LifeWise Academy in Ohio, where public school students are allowed to leave campus for religious instruction, emphasizing that this practice detracts from actual education and can ostracize non-religious students. Throughout the interview, Nick highlights the importance of collaboration among secular organizations and the need to build local-level activism. Nick finally shares details about the upcoming national conference scheduled for Easter weekend in 2025, taking place in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis–Saint Paul. In this jammed packed episode, we talk with Zach and Molly, parents who are taking a stand against LifeWise Academy, an evangelical Christian nationalist group that has found a way to seep into public schools through a legal loophole. They have formed Parents Against LifeWise to shed light on the group's questionable tactics, lack of background checks on members, and the concerning activities they are engaged in. The episode paints a grim picture of how school districts are turning a blind eye to the situation, emphasizing the urgent need for public awareness and action to combat the influence of such groups in educational settings. We touch on the frustrating moments of silence encountered when reaching out to organizations like FFRF and Ohio ACLU, who have failed to address the issues at hand adequately. This inaction leaves children vulnerable and without proper representation, highlighting the crucial role parents play in advocating for their rights. The responsibility falls on schools to ensure they are held accountable for any violations, rather than letting external groups like LifeWise escape blame for any harmful activities. The discussion exposes the deceptive nature of LifeWise, presenting itself as non-denominational while promoting exclusive evangelical beliefs, potentially preying on susceptible communities. Their curriculum, based on the Southern Baptist Convention, spreads harmful ideologies among impressionable young minds, as evidenced by documents detailing their damaging teachings. The podcast also shines a light on individuals like Joel Penton, involved in the group's questionable practices under the guise of motivational speeches with underlying religious agendas. The dubious funding sources and misleading petition strategies employed by LifeWise raise significant concerns about their true motives. We finally explore the legal challenges faced by Zach, who shared LifeWise's curriculum online and is now embroiled in a lawsuit with the group. Despite accessing the material lawfully and with no profit motive, Zach finds himself in a legal battle against LifeWise, showcasing the community rallying behind him for support. We touch on a recent scandal involving a former LifeWise employee, adding layers of complexity to the situation. Zach expresses gratitude for the solidarity received and discusses avenues for assistance in his legal defense as the podcast concludes with well-wishes for his upcoming court proceedings, directing listeners to their website for further information and updates.Full Show NotesSend us a Text Message.Support the Show.Subscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our MerchFind us on Twitter(for now) Find us on InstagramFind us on Counter SocialFind us on Mastadon

Decades ago, our nation systematically removed Bible education from the public school day. LifeWise Academy is bringing it back. Under a little-known Supreme Court ruling, LifeWise empowers communities to provide Bible education for their public school students during school hours. Wednesday on Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, Founder and CEO of LifeWise Academy joins us to talk about how this program has quickly grown to serve hundreds of schools across the U.S. each week, with tens of thousands of students attending LifeWise to receive a Bible class as part of their public school day. Join us as we tackle the controversial presence of LifeWise Academy in Ohio's public schools. LifeWise, a well-funded evangelical group, has been pushing religious classes under the guise of release time religious education. We discuss how they manipulate state laws to recruit elementary students to attend Bible classes off-campus, often misleading parents and school districts about their true intentions. Our guests, Molly Gaines and Zachary Parrish, co-founders of Parents Against LifeWise, share their personal journeys and experiences that led them to oppose LifeWise's influence. We uncover the troubling lack of accountability and transparency in schools regarding LifeWise's programs. School districts are failing to track attendance and deflecting responsibility, leaving parents in the dark. We expose the concerning nature of LifeWise's curriculum, which includes harmful rhetoric and inappropriate guidance on sensitive subjects such as family dynamics and gender identity. Through specific documents and personal stories, we highlight the need for vigilance and advocacy to protect children's and parental rights in the educational system. We also address the manipulative tactics LifeWise employs within communities, including the questionable legitimacy of its petition process and its MLM-like structure for fundraising. Our discussion reveals LifeWise's troubling affiliations with right-wing extremist groups and figures, raising ethical and transparency issues. Additionally, we explore the implications of Ohio House Bill 445 on religious freedom in public schools and the broader concerns about education privatization. Join us for a compelling conversation with Molly and Zachary, who are dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for inclusive educational practices that respect diverse religious beliefs. Joel Penton shares how this has gained them media attention.
First Liberty client LifeWise Academy is an education program available to public schools that teaches the Bible to students who might never be exposed to it otherwise–during school hours. LifeWise is currently being attacked by both the Freedom from Religion Foundation and the leftist media. The notoriously anti-faith Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF) recently sent a letter to 600 school districts in Ohio “warning” school officials about the mission of LifeWise Academy. Listen to LifeWise Academy Founder and CEO Joel Penton explain how this program is making a positive impact in communities across the country and what First Liberty is doing to make sure that it's protected from attacks.
LifeWise Academy is on a mission to reach school children with the gospel—during school hours! When LifeWise launched in 2018, the initial goal was to serve 25 schools by 2025, but it surpassed that long ago. By the start of this year, LifeWise had set up chapters in more than 300 schools in a dozen states, teaching 35,000 public school students weekly Bible lessons that are usually scheduled to coincide with lunch or non core courses such as library, art or gym class. NBC Politicizes Bible Instruction During School Hours, Yet Americans Overwhelmingly Support Such Programs—Nearly 80% of Voters Support Teaching Moral and Character Education to Public School Students. NBC recently profiled LifeWise Academy. A non-profit that provides bible based instruction to school children, during school hours. Thanks to a Supreme Court Ruling that allows off campus religious instruction during school hours, as long as the government doesn't pay for it or promote it. The program is having tremendous success on the lives of young children. So much success, NBC choose to leave out the results of LifeWise Academy. The CEO of LifeWise, Joel Penton, is our guest to respond to the NBC News piece, “NBC News did a national piece on our organization. I have to say, I'm a little disappointed because we invited them in, lined up people for them to speak to and they left out some of the most critical information. “They left out the results … there are real results. “When LifeWise is implemented in a school, attendance goes up. Schools are struggling with attendance post-COVID and with LifeWise, attendance goes up to the point that there's a net increase in class time ... Also, in-school suspensions go down and out-of-school suspensions go down, so there is clearly improved behavior."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sarah Buzynski is "just a mom" who wants her kids to know Jesus and trust God's Word. When she heard about LifeWise curriculum -- a curriculum where kids can learn the Scriptures in a public school setting -- on Carmen LaBerge's Faith Radio program she was stirred by the Lord to investigate LifeWise, and then to get it set up in her local school district. In the process, Sarah unexpectedly ran into some resistance and learned that this would end up being more controversial than she ever imagined or intended. Through this, she is more aware of the spiritual battle that exists around us and she has a better understanding of the cost of discipleship that will be required of any Christian who desires to used in God's Kingdom. Here's more about LifeWise:Believe it or not, we can provide a Bible education class for our public school students DURING SCHOOL HOURS! Episode 121 - Joel Penton is a former defensive tackle and national champion for the Ohio State University Buckeyes, as well as a Danny Wuerffel Trophy recipient (the "humanitarian Heisman"). He is the author of three books and the founder and CEO of LifeWise Academy--a groundbreaking program providing Bible education to students in over 300 of our nation's public schools, during school hours. He is a widely sought-after speaker with over 1,000 live audiences having taken in his message. Joel and his wife Bethany live in Columbus, Ohio, with their five children. Ben loads his sling and shines his helmet for this giant guest interview, while Chad backs Ben up with his armory of big words as co-host. The two take up a great conversation with this purveyor of the Gospel in the public-school setting. How is it possible--through LifeWise Academy--that public school students are legally allowed to study the Bible during school hours? What kinds of opposition has LifeWise Academy faced from secular and anti-religious groups? And if someone is interested in brining Bible education to their school district, what are the steps necessary to make that happen? How could a school change if students had access to Bible education during school hours? Ben Ruprecht is a representative for Lifewise Academy, which offers Bible education for public school students during school hours. Their ministry has expanded to over 35,000 students in 330 schools across 12 states. He shares how Bible education has a transformational impact on students' lives, which ultimately pours over into the classroom. Schools report that kids pay better attention, and classes have fewer interruptions when implementing this program for their students. According to their educational survey, 76% of educators (teachers, principals, administrators) agree that it benefits both the school and the student.
Growing up a punk rock fan, I've always admired the raw emotion and honesty embedded in the genre. Reflecting this, we dive into the life of punk rock legend Henry Rollins and uncover the turbulent family dynamics that shaped him. You'll learn how those experiences shed light on the importance of families choosing to remain together out of love, not obligation, unearthing the implications of societal and religious pressures on family ties. Whether it's Rollins' strained relationship with his mother and stepfather or a family member of mine who severed ties with her own mother, we challenge the 'perfect' nuclear family narrative that pervades our society. Building on the theme of societal pressures, we shift the conversation to a contentious issue that has stirred my passion for the longest time: religious education in public schools. In Ohio, a unique arrangement known as Release Time Religious Education allows public school students to attend Bible school classes during the school day. As a humanist and atheist, we grapple with the thorny issues this raises, not least the infiltration of LifeWise Academy, a group pushing for these Bible classes, into our school systems. While sifting through the delicate balance of religion and education, we raise critical questions about the role of school district personnel in student recruitment for these classes and the potential dangers therein. So, tune in for this eye-opening exploration of familial and societal tensions. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Pastor Joel Penton discovered not too long ago a well-hidden law in the United States that allows children to be dismissed for one-hour during school for religious education. The only three stipulations: it must be off school property, it must be privately funded, and the child must have a parent's permission. Pastor Penton said, "No problem." He is the founder and CEO of Lifewise Academy, a non-profit created to teach the Bible to children during school hours. In less than five years, Lifewise is now operating in more than 300 schools and eleven states. And the numbers are growing. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith, Penton talks about what atheists' organizations don't want you to know, that God's Word can be a part of a child's daytime education. Public Schools by law are secular, but we're also a nation steeped in faith. So, in 1952 the Supreme Court ruled that public school students could be released during school hours to receive religious instruction as a means to providing that faith formation. The message we are so used to hearing is, “Don't make this mistake like I did…” or “Listen to me because I messed up big time…” and so on. But what about the person who stood their ground (even from an early age in school) and can speak from experience about making good decisions and the outcomes of those good decisions? That regardless of the popularity or consequences tied to them… he was going to do the unpopular thing and to go against his peers. Our guest today, Joel Penton, is an ordinary man with an extraordinary message that has been shared with over half a million young people all over the country. You don't need to fit in to stand out. You just need to stand your ground. And Joel continues to spread his message through a new passion with Lifewise Academy. “If you're willing to work hard, willing to never miss a work out, and if you're willing to do more than everyone else, then you could compete and you could excel.” - Joel Penton Time Stamps 01:17 – Welcome to the ‘Strong by Design' podcast 3:17 – Get to know today's special guest, Joel Penton, a renowned youth motivational speaker 07:47 – Joel on what it feels like to give a speech to a large crowd and how he's teaching the Bible in schools 15:41 – Joel on staying on the narrow path to God 21:03 – Joel reveals the biggest influence on his career 28:09 – Why he turns down the NFL dream to pursue public speaking 34:09 – Joel shares his most memorable public speaking event 38:38 – ‘LifeWise Academy': How he introduces Bible education to public school students 42:05 - Joel shares what's next for 'LifeWise Academy' 46:15 - How 'LifeWise Academy' impacts lives 51:13 - Where you can go to connect with Joel Penton and learn more about 'LifeWise Academy' Resources: Lifewise Academy Joel Penton Connect w/ Joel: Facebook Instagram Connect w/ CriticalBench: Youtube Facebook Instagram CriticalBench.com StrongByDesignPodcast.com

This week, our ministry focus was on Community Outreach. We highlighted two key ministries that have helped us as a church spread the gospel through out our own community. The first being our NapNaz Community Preschool, led by teacher and director, Sarah Sonnenberg. NapNaz Preschool helps to prepare children spiritually and academically as they enter into kindergarten. Our second ministry outreach is LifeWise Academy, directed by our community outreach and worship pastor, Ben Hartford. LifeWise Academy is a Released Time Religious Instruction (RTRI) program which provides Bible-based character education to public school students. Under RTRI laws, students can be released from public school during the school day to attend religious classes, provided the program is off school property, privately funded and parent-permitted. If you are interested in finding or starting a Lifewise Academy in your school district, head to https://www.lifewiseacademy.org/about to get more information.
This week on the pod, Laura takes the hosting duties. She's joined by our Local Go Direction, Cody Ohnmeiss, as well as two of our friends, Sarah Steiner and Annie Gill, to talk about LifeWise Academy.
