There is one thing that people tend to overlook when reviewing Studio Chizu's BELLE. Despite being directed by legendary filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda (Wolf Children, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) and providing an optimistic take on technology and the internet, the film falls short when it attempts to portray how people should safely help victims of abuse. In this episode, we explore the changing effects of our bodies as we age and their impacts on mental health. Once people reach the age of 65 their immune system changes. Cells become slower at detecting potential viruses, bacteria, and diseases as well as replacing defected cells. This is a big reason why seniors are more prone to illness and why the simple flu can have life-threatening outcomes rather than normally requiring a couple of days in bed with fluids then be healthy.  There are some key elements to a healthy lifestyle that can help to protect and prevent an individual's immune system while naturally deteriorating with aging. A balanced diet, daily physical activity, utilizing the brain's creative process, having healthy outlets for stress, taking time for self-care, spending time with loved ones, not smoking or drinking to excess. When a person's mental health is well taken care of, many of the common physical ailments can be avoided such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, thyroid issues, hypertension, and stroke to name a few.Surgeries and injuries are a common component of life and can be unavoidable at times. They can however become exacerbated by the aging process. Bones aren't as strong; healing timelines take longer, and recovery is more difficult on the body. One of the best ways to recover from damage to the body is preventative measures. Therefore, it is important to be in good health prior to any injury to better help with recovery ability and time. If you are someone or have someone you know, who is struggling with their mental health after a big life event there are many tools out there to help, but the most important is for that person to have support so they don't feel alone. So everyone knows that I love to talk about history I mean what's better than taking pride in our past? But in taking pride in our past and discovering who we are it's also important to take pride in our scars. Our personal scars, our emotional scars, the thing that makes us human and connects all of us not only to our ancestors but to each other. Today my best friend Giovanni Kelly and I (@thegiovannikelly on Instagram) are going to sit down and have a heart to heart about mental health with you guys. We got vulnerable and were honest about our struggles because we believe it's important that people know that they aren't alone in their struggles. Life is hard and with a pandemic going on it makes it even more difficult to escape our inner demons. Thus, we wanted to help out a little, by talking about our own lives and experiences with you; so that you can take comfort in the fact that you are not alone, that you are strong and in the end you can and will get through ANYTHING. The essence of colour your life is education, activism and pride, by doing this episode we are working through our own past and history and advocating for mental health awareness. We may not be as epic as Nelson Mandela or Simon Bolivar but we are people of colour too with our own struggles and stories to tell.Thank you for taking time to colour your life. In this episode I share my story of discovering my path as an educator, break down, breakthrough and healing and how BRAVE came into being. I start off with an ‘I Come From’ poem which is a fun icebreaker to use with students, I modified this version: https://freeology.com/worksheet-creator/poetry/i-am-from-poem/ - you can easily do this as a verbal or written exercise. As part of my story I discuss and define intrusive thoughts. For more information on Intrusive thoughts visit www.intrusivethoughts.org. I also discuss my experience with anxiety. If you or someone you know struggles with anxiety, depression, addiction, or any other mental illness please reach out for support. You are not alone, and you deserve help through your journey in healing. It may feel impossible now, and it may be very challenging, and I encourage you from the bottom of my heart to check out these resources now. Look for a therapist that specializes in something you may need such as anxiety, anxiety disorders, childhood trauma, family dynamics, bi-polar disorder, depression, sexual trauma, etc. And ask questions and do you research - make sure they feel good for you, have similar values to you, this is your healing journey. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists  https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/freudian-sip/201102/how-find-the-best-therapist-you Online Counseling: www.betterhelp.com/ Mental Health Online forum: https://themighty.com/topic/mental-health/ Crisis Hotlines: https://www.mentalhelp.net/articles/depression-hotline/ Find more on the book I refer to “The Way of the Peaceful Warrior”: http://www.peacefulwarrior.com/ One of my favorite tools for working with the anxiety I experience is to consume media that lights me up. CRISIS HOTLINES: WHO, WHAT AND WHY? Who calls a hotline?  Maybe a better question is who doesn’t? Those phone numbers have offered advice, comfort, resources and a willing ear to untold numbers of callers for decades. Turns out a lot of people call or chat with these help numbers but what do they really offer and who exactly uses them?  And do they really help? Rena Fitzgerald is the Senior Program Manager for Crisis Services at Volunteers of America of Western Washington, and she’s been doing crisis intervention for 15 years. She knows who calls, and why. She also knows who answers the phone, the training they have and the reason they do it. For an inside look at crisis help lines, suicide prevention hot lines, domestic violence hot lines, and all the other free crisis intervention services out there, join as we first air this discussion about crisis phone and chat help lines. First airing on Saturday, March 24, at 11 AM Pacific Time, and available thereafter through the archive at www.blogtalkradio.com/3women3ways.
