[13:00] How Medigap is different in Connecticut [19:00] Connecting with Danielle and her team [22:50] Closing thoughts [25:00] Understanding Medicare Open Enrollment Medicare open enrollment – also known as Medicare's annual election period – runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. According to Danielle, during the Medicare open enrollment period you have the following options available to you: Switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage (as long as you're enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B, and you live in the Medicare Advantage plan's service area). Switch from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare (plus a Medicare Part D plan, and possibly a Medigap plan). Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another. Switch from one Medicare Part D prescription drug plan to another. Enroll in a Medicare Part D plan if you didn't enroll when you were first eligible for Medicare. If you haven't maintained other creditable coverage, a late-enrollment penalty may apply. Unfortunately, the open enrollment period does not apply to Medigap plans. Also, it is important to note that if you didn't enroll in Medicare when you were first eligible, you cannot use the fall open enrollment period to enroll. Instead, you'll use the Medicare general enrollment period, which runs from January 1 to March 31. Medicare's general enrollment period is for people who didn't sign up for Medicare Part B when they were first eligible, and who don't have access to a Medicare Part B special enrollment period. It's also for people who have to pay a premium for Medicare Part A and didn't enroll in Part A when they were first eligible. If you enroll during the general enrollment period, your coverage will take effect July 1. Make sure to listen to this episode as Danielle expands on the topic of Medicare open enrollment and so much more! Even with covered health-cares services, consumers like you are still responsible for a number of copayments and deductibles, which can easily add up. This is where Medigap Insurance and Medicare Advantage come in. To avoid these out-of-pocket costs, many people with Medicare enroll in two types of plans to cover these gaps in coverage. There are two options commonly used to replace or supplement Medicare Parts A and B. Medicare Advantage plans. Medicare Advantage plans are an alternative to Medicare Parts A and B. If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you're still in the Medicare program. However, you'll get your Medicare benefits through your Medicare Advantage plan, instead of through the federally administered program. Medicare Supplement (or Medigap) insurance plans. Medigap is a type of health insurance that offers additional coverage for normal Medicare plans. It helps fill in the “gaps” in normal Medicare coverage by helping you pay for out-of-pocket costs. To hear Danielle expand on the difference between these two options and what savvy consumers like you can do to make the best possible choice, make sure to listen to this episode! An HSA is an account that you can open when you have a qualifying high deductible health insurance plan that you can deposit money into tax-free that grows over time with interest that you can use to pay for qualified medical expenses.
JT and Tamzon had a great start. After paternity leave from a fantastic job, JT thought he knew that with his burgeoning side-gig, he could quit his job and live happily ever after without going back to full-time work. Then, he found out that the math wasn't working. What would you do? We'll share one family's story of taking control of your goals and then rebooting when the math still doesn't make sense. On today's show early-retirees JT and Tamzon join us to talk about adding flexibility into your planning. Plus, are you a Medicare recipient? If so, it's an important open enrollment time for many. If not, you should plan ahead for the (ahem) increasing cost of healthcare. Danielle Kunkle Roberts from Boomer Benefits joins us to chat about all things Medicare. And in our second headline, we'll share how much your peers have saved for retirement. Want to gauge how you're doing? We'll have all the numbers. Of course, we're also going to toss out the Haven Life Line and we'll still make room for Doug's trivia. Step aside, people! There's a new episode coming!

Learn how you can prepare and save for the costs of retirement! How Much Do We Need to Save for Retirement? If you’ve used those free online calculator to find your retirement number, you probably were amazed at how much they say you need. A million, two million, maybe more for just one of you. How do you feel when you see those numbers? Considering that 1 in 3 Americans has less than $5,000 saved for retirement, chances are there’s room for improvement. Unless you’re living in denial about retirement, you’re probably dealing many of the hurdles couples deal with when it comes to saving and investing for retirement. 1- You have a full plate right now. As parents with two little ones, we always have something to do. We’re not complaining – this is really a fun season of life right now – but realistically our time and attention are focused around them. 2- Bills and debts. You may not be able to save more because there’s not much to give right now. If you have to pay credit cards, car loan, student loans and have a mortgage, your money is pretty much spent already. 3 – You’re not a financial planner. Hop online and you’’ll quickly see that there is endless free advice about what you should be doing. And it can be overwhelming at best and wrong for you at worst. Sifting through all that can be a mess. Running the numbers is also difficult. Especially with one area of retirement that we have to deal with now – healthcare costs and insurance. How do you know how much you’ll need years, decades down the line? The answer is there is no way to perfect predict how much you need. But there are ways you can start drawing a plan that fits your circumstances and your goals. Which is I’m happy Danielle Kunkle Roberts is here on today’s episode. Danielle is the co-founder of Boomer Benefits. Boomer Benefits specializes in Medicare supplement and Medicare Advantage insurance. Which you may be thinking, I’m too young for Medicare, but I think she’s perfect because she has a close up of view of how prepared people really are for retirement. She’s going to offer suggestions, ideas, and tips on what you can do now so you can be better equipped to handle the costs of retirement. And how your health insurance choices now can help or harm you later. In this episode, we’ll discuss: Prioritizing your finances How HDHP and HSAs work and when they are right for you How HSAs can help with healthcare costs during retirement Hope you enjoy!
