This week, Ozark original old-time fiddler, banjo maker and legendary fiddle tune collector Banjo Billy Mathews recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, Arkansas. Dave Smith is joined in hosting this week by expert musicologist and Banjo Billy's most prolific protege, Emily Lawless. Billy Mathews is known far and wide across this land for his musical skill and old time fiddling ability. He has traveled extensively throughout the Midwest for over 40 years. Thoughtful musical kinships, maintained throughout these many years, have earned him a considerable amount of notoriety and recognition in Old Time music circles. True to his name, Billy continues to play and record a vast amount of Old Time Clawhammer Banjo tunes. Billy has released a recording of Original Banjo Tunes, The Ghost of Banjo Billy. Billy still resides in the Ozark Mountains, continuing work on music projects. Billy keeps busy by traveling throughout the country for workshops, concerts and other special events, playing his huge repertoire of old time fiddle and banjo tunes. Billy has literally become the embodiment of his Scot-Irish ancestors by continuing their traditional approach to life. Billy continues to collect and play a huge repertoire of old-time fiddle tunes. He has already made a sizeable and significant contribution to our American musical culture and there is no end in sight! Billy has shared the stage with such noteworthy musicians as Joe Burke, John Koener, John Hartford, The Fiddle Puppets, Mike Seeger, De Dannan, Bill Monroe and more! - http://www.banjobilly.net/about-us/ In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1974 archival recording of Ozark original Larry Poff performing the tune “900 Miles,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor, and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins examines the gradual disappearance of traditional Ozarkian language in the modern Ozark region through the lens of his friendship and conversations with Ozark scholar Dr. Audrey Thompson.

*We are moving to a weekly podcast schedule, check out instagram @candlelitales for details! Welcome back to the Invasions Series. Today we're talking about the not so great side of the Tuatha de Dannan. They landed with 300 boats, and burned the lot of them, sending a sign to anyone who lived here that they were not leaving anytime soon. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. The third group of people from the Mythic Cycles of Irish stories were the Nemedians, led by Nemed himself. His people came from somewhere in the south as well, some say it was the Caspian sea. But although he left with 30 boards with 30people in each, only one boat made the voyage to this island. Like the people before them, they met the Fomorians, dealt with their raids and torment, and had a very different kind of battle with them. We talk about greed, and the ego of this leader that lead his people to an inevitable failure. Like and subscribe to this channel to help us grow. "The Summer Sent You” The summer sent us Mary Black. And we are better for it. And we’re so lucky to have her. The legendary Dublin-born singer doesn’t do a lot of podcasts so we’re very appreciative that she chose to do ours. And, coincidentally enough, she appears one week after her son Danny of the Coronas made his third appearance on the show. Mary Black has the kind of musical CV that is filled with so many highlights, to list them all would require a separate podcast. Over the course of her career, she’s put out 12 solo albums, including classics like Without the Fanfare, and By The Time It Gets Dark. She also found time to record two great albums with the traditional Irish folk band De Dannan and toured the world with them as well. Over the course of her winning career, Mary Black sold out the Royal Albert Hall, collaborated with Joan Baez, Steve Martin Liam Clancy, and Westlife, won IRMA’s for Entertainer of the Year and Best Female Artist and in the process of all this work, became one of the most treasured voices in music, both in her native Ireland and internationally. And speaking of that voice, What HiFi magazine once declared that Black’s voice was so pure, they used it as an audiophile benchmark for comparing the sound quality of different high fidelity systems. In this conversation, Mary talks to Alex about heading to Tasmania, the work of Bob Dylan and Shane MacGowan, being protective of her voice and what adding orchestration taught her about the songs we’ve known her for all these years...

I hope you will bare with me through the next couple months. I host two other podcasts. The Pub Songs Podcast which is currently replaying all of my albums. The other is Celtfather Music & Travel. It's a spoken word podcast where I share things from my adventures and thoughts that occur. Every now and then, it's highly Celtic-related. I did a recent episode on my Celtic Invasion of Oban Scotland in 2010. And most recently, I published a thought-provoking response to a recent episode by Seth Godin on "Anthems, Pledges and Change". I feel like it was a really interesting podcast and it is related to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast as well as my music. Give it a listen. Christmas is just around the corner. But I am a completely disabled veteran, with very limited means. Slainte!" Arika Lycan emailed from from Ypsilanti (ips-ill-an-tee) MI: " Good morning! I’m sure I’ll pop in my earbuds and listen to the rest of this episode which will keep me in good spirits. Maybe I’ll even share an ear bud with my mom :-) Safe travels in Scotland!" Connor Hibbs emailed: "Hi Mark! Just re-listening to episode 360 while sitting and editing photos (That's what I do for a living) Hoping to get a job out before the day gets too warm so I can also spend some time landscaping my back yard. Just wanted to write to tell you I love your show and give a suggestion! I'm not sure how you edit the show together, but it would be great to have chapters embedded into the feed so I could skip back to the beginning of songs I really love. I totally realize that my suggestion would create a little more work for you overall in what is already without a doubt a labor intense process, and am definitely not saying that I would ever stop listening even if you choose not to go that route. Just wanted to provide a friendly suggestion for a feature from someone who really adores the show and feels that others might enjoy having something like that included! Sláinte!"
