#201: Michael Alford is the Florida State University Director of Athletics. Alford has helped position Seminole athletics among the nation's elite both in terms of competitive excellence and as influential in the critical issues of the day. He has truly emerged as one of collegiate athletics' leaders while remaining true to his primary objective – an unwavering commitment to student-athlete welfare. That commitment has produced measurable results by every metric within a solution-oriented, positive culture that places the student-athlete first in all pursuits. It's evidenced, in part, by his direction of more than $400 million for projects to improve athletic facilities and fields in just the last three years. It is clear to anyone that comes to campus as construction on the 150,000 square foot Dunlap Football Center and state-of-the-art improvements to historic Doak Campbell Stadium are fully in progress entering the 2025 football season.Alford is equally committed to the success of the student in the classroom resulting in the strongest consistent academic performance in athletics department history. FSU student-athletes established an all-time best cumulative grade-point average of 3.250 as a department. Not only that but numerous teams have excelled in their respective sports from football, baseball, softball, volleyball, and many others. Over three decades in intercollegiate athletics and professional sports, he has held positions with the Dallas Cowboys, the University of Alabama, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Southern California, the Cincinnati Bengals and was Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics at Central Michigan University. For more info on Michael check out social media and seminoles.com This is a great conversation with an incredible leader. Florida State won its first game of the 2024 football season on Saturday when the Seminoles took on California inside Doak Campbell Stadium. We get to celebrate and talk about FSU's awesome defensive performance, holding Cal to just nine points and no touchdowns on the evening. However, we do need to once again criticize FSU's offensive output, getting outgained by over 100 yards and only putting up 14 points. Where does FSU go from here? We talk about that, plus some positive recruiting developments including a new commitment, on the latest episode of On The Bench. Florida State University is looking to raise nearly $327 million for their football program by offering revenue bonds. This has led many college football fans to circulate rumors about FSU being “broke” or trying to raise these funds in order to buy their way out of the ACC. So, what's the truth? Florida State will plan to use these funds for a football only facility and for providing renovations to Doak Campbell Stadium. Hosts Alex Donno and Kenton Gibbs get the scoop from Locked On Seminoles host Brian Smith. Donno theorizes that Florida State will look to use private donations for boosting their NIL pockets while turning to these bonds for facilities. Smith offers the latest on FSU's legal fights with the ACC and how long it might take to leave the conference. Brian discusses the reasons why Syracuse head coach Fran Brown is quietly winning unexpected battles on the recruiting trail. Donno and Gibbs wonder how ESPN+ losing $65 million last quarter might affect the ACC in future negotiations.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! FSU football faced a crushing blow to its College Football Playoff aspirations when a 13-person committee relegated the undefeated ACC champion Florida State Seminoles to the No. 5 spot. Meanwhile, the one-loss SEC champion Alabama Crimson Tide climbed from No. 8 to No. 4. The final top-four playoff rankings included Michigan (Big Ten), Washington (soon-to-be Big Ten), Texas (soon-to-be SEC), and Alabama (SEC), revealing a notable trend favoring the SEC and Big Ten conferences. These conferences have consistently commanded attention in college football, boasting annual revenues exceeding $50 million per school, while the ACC lags behind with approximately $30 million per school. This significant revenue gap raises concerns about how powerhouses like Florida State and Clemson can compete when conference peers like Vanderbilt amass abundant resources. The ACC's Grant of Rights, securing broadcast rights until 2036, aimed to ensure long-term stability but has become a predicament. Florida State faces a substantial buy-out unless conference teams unite to challenge it. The Seminoles, under the leadership of athletic director Michael Alford, advocate for a shift in the revenue model. Their national appeal is evident in impressive viewership numbers, emphasizing Florida State as a compelling brand.Undeterred, Florida State actively invests in success, evident in the Doak Campbell Stadium renovations, the football-only facility construction, the extension of head coach Mike Norvell, and other initiatives. Locked On Canes - Daily Podcast On Miami Hurricanes Football & Basketball
Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal and FSU head coach Mike Norvell each have plenty of pressure this weekend in their rivalry matchup, but for different reasons. For Norvell, he needs FSU to remain undefeated to ensure qualification for the College Football playoff. Plus, he cannot afford to lose this rivalry game at home as a two touchdown favorite. For Mario Cristobal, there is pressure to make the right decision at quarterback and to keep this game competitive, if not win outright. More than 100 prospects will be in FSU's recruiting section at Doak Campbell Stadium. Host Alex Donno and guest Brian Smith break down what has to happen during the week in order to make a quarterback change. Smith explains why benching Tyler Van Dyke for Emory Williams or Jacurri Brown is not as simple as it seems. Will Cristobal end up starting Van Dyke with a short leash? Smith explains the potential path to victory for Miami on Saturday. Smith talks about 4-Star Miami committed wide receiver Chance Robinson, and whether Miami fans should be worried about him flipping to Ole Miss or Ohio State. Former FSU offensive lineman and college football coach Mark Salva joins Seminole Sidelines host Pat Burnham as they offer their first impression of FSU's 38-20 win over Duke on Saturday night in Doak Campbell Stadium. Florida State moves 7-0 on the season and is 5-0 in the ACC and is now the only team with a perfect conference record. The guys talk about the impact Jordan Travis' legs had on the Seminoles second half comeback and if his performance puts him back into the Heisman Trophy race. They also talk about the FSU's defense performance in the second half where they limited Duke to just 53 yards rushing in the second half after giving up 144 yards on the ground in the first half. For more on FSU-Duke, go to theOsceola.com.

FSU's talent, experience, and playing in Doak Campbell Stadium will lead the Seminoles to a big victory over Duke. The Noles offensive numbers are a big reason for that as well, and this podcast goes in depth about some of the key numbers. Plus, Riley Leonard is at best partially healthy versus the Noles.Download Locked On Seminoles from any major platform: https://link.chtbl.com/LOSeminoles?siDiscuss FSU and follow the show on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lockedonseminolespodFollow the show on Twitter: https://twitter.com/LO_Seminoles#FSU #Noles #FloridaState #Recruiting #FSUFootball #MikeNorvell #JordanTravis #keoncoleman #johnnywilsonSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!BetterhelpThis podcast is sponsored by BetterHelp. If you're thinking of starting therapy, give BetterHelp a try. To get ready for a big road game this Saturday, I sat down with FSU beat writer Ehsan Kassim. During our talk, we went over Ehsan's Seminole origin story, his SEC roots and then got into Duke's upcoming opponent. We covered how Mike Norvell utilized the transfer portal to build the team, the overall strengths of FSU and how the teams will match up with one another in Doak Campbell Stadium. We also talked about CFP scenarios and speculated about what the Committee would do with one loss PAC-12 and ACC teams come selection time. We listen to a few voicemails, discuss how the Blue Devils did against NC State, check in on Richlandia during the prediction segment and get Joey Finison to stop by with a guest pick. I also botch a Fight Club quote (the actual quote is "In the Tibetan philosophy, Sylvia Plath sense of the word, we're all dying. But you're not dying the way Chloe is dying." And, of course, I detour into Roman history. I mean, why wouldn't I? Please call the pod (540-632-0160), leave a message and you'll get in an episode. No. 5 Florida State returned to Doak Campbell Stadium on Saturday after two road games and a bye, taking on the Virginia Tech Hokies in an ACC matchup. The Seminoles stormed out to a 22-0 lead in the first quarter, the most points to start a game this season. It was the performance expected after a week off, with FSU only allowing the Hokies to gain 9 yards through 15 minutes of play. Virginia Tech managed to put together two scoring drives in the second quarter while FSU only had two possessions to close out the first half, making the score 22-10 at half. The Hokies then came out swinging to start the third, scoring on kickoff to make it a one-score game (the first kickoff returned on the Seminoles since 2004.) Florida State quickly negated that score with a touchdown of its own, a 62-yard dash by Trey Benson — which stood as his career-high for about quarter and a half. FSU added on a Ryan Fitzgerald field goal to round out the fourth, making things 32-17 as the Hokies continued to try and find a spark. A key drive saw them nearly convert on a 4th-and-22 situation, but Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones fell one-yard short and on the next play, Benson hit an 85-yard run to put Florida State up by 22. With the game in hand Jordan Travis left the game with just over five minutes in the fourth, finishing with a statline of 18 of 24 completions for 170 yards and two touchdowns, both to Johnny Wilson. Virginia Tech, threatening to score in the final minutes of the game, fumbled after a 31-yard gain, giving Tate Rodemaker a chance to kneel the game out and solidify the 39-17 win. With the win, Florida State is now 5-0 for the first time under Mike Norvell and overall since 2015. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Florida State Seminoles football took to Doak Campbell Stadium on Saturday night for the final practice of preseason camp, with head coach Mike Norvell excited about the opportunity for his team to get a quick feel for their home field. “I thought tonight was a good night, getting back out in Doak Campell,” he said after practice. “We wanted to get a little bit of experience of that. I thought they came out and worked. It was a tough practice, we wanted and needed one I thought there were some up and down moments throughout practice, but all in all, I'm liking what I'm seeing from this team.” “I thought there were some moments of elite-level intensity today, and there were some moments where we, especially later in practice, kind of jumped on guys. I's been a real camp, we've gotten after it..really good moments in today's practice, but some of those times where maybe [we're] not as sharp we got to continue to get better.” Norvell met with the media after practice to offer impressions on the night's work output and overall fall camp thoughts and Florida State's season opener vs. the LSU Tigers approaches. Florida State football switched things up for its Thursday, April 6 practice, opting for a session inside Doak Campbell Stadium rather than the Albert J. Dunlap Athletic Training Facility. The environmental change provided an opportunity for the team to add situational goal line work to its agenda for the day, leading to reps that head coach Mike Norvell was complimentary of following practice. “We went close to 15 goal line play, all back-to-back...in today's age it's really hard to rep a ton of that situation,” he said. “Sometimes you just got to put the ball down and go get it. I thought there was some really, really good plays, defense ended up winning the situation there today. It was impressive to see some of the fights, some of the stops that they had.” “[Situations like] red zone, overtime, working on coming off the goal line for the offense, putting them in some challenging situations. I like the work.” FSU will have the rest of the week off, with next week serving as the lead-up to the annual Spring Showcase. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Two shared opponents, two different outcomes in both matchups. The ACC Atlantic has turned into one of the more competitive divisions in college football this season, with the No. 4 Clemson Tigers, No. 14 Wake Forest Demon Deacons, No. 15 NC State Wolfpack, No. 18 Syracuse Orange and Florida State all battling it out at the top. Clemson (6-0, 4-0 ACC), by way of wins over Wake and NC State, has separated itself as the leader of the pack while the rest scrap it out for pecking order. FSU (4-2, 2-2 ACC) also faced off against the Demon Deacons and Wolfpack but came up short, both frustrating losses that showcased both the steps the Seminoles still have to make in order to elevate to the conference's elite and the potential it has to belong with them. The toughest test of the season for the Seminoles now comes as they prep to host Clemson at 7:30 p.m. inside Doak Campbell Stadium. The Tigers have won six straight in the series, dating back to a 2014 thriller between the two schools that Florida State pulled off in overtime. Clemson, according to DraftKings, is currently a 3.5 point favorite over the Seminoles. To help break down the Tigers, Will Harper of our SB Nation sister site Shakin the Southland jumped on the latest episode of Line of Scrimmage to talk about Clemson's season so far, the evolution of quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, the Tigers' strengths and weaknesses on each side of the ball and a prediction for Saturday night. The Noles took down the BC Eagles in convincing fashion on Saturday evening in front of a packed crowd at Doak Campbell Stadium. The final score was likely closer than the result and it was still a blowout. FSU 44, BC 14 was what the scoreboard read after the game. Jordan Travis looked great, Mike Norvell had his team motivated, and the guys absolutely brought it. Support Guthrie's in Tallahassee! Florida State Seminoles football earned its first season-opening win since 2016 on Saturday, taking down the Duquesne Dukes 47-7 inside Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. It was a fantastic showing by the running back room, with the Seminoles setting a school record by having three players (Treshaun Ward, Trey Benson and Lawrance Toafili) record at least 100 rushing yards. All six of the Seminoles touchdowns came on the ground, with quarterback Jordan Travis and true freshman Rodney Hill also ending the end zone. With no turnovers forced and just one sack, there weren't any “wow” plays from the defense, but statistically FSU got the job done, only allowing a score following a 50-yard interception return off an errant Tate Rodemaker throw. So what takeaways are there from the 40-point win? Immediately after the game wrapped up, we hit a live stream to offer instant reaction and analysis from the Seminoles' season debut. Hello everyone, happy Wednesday -- this is Noles News Now, the latest in Florida State Seminoles sports, presented by Tomahawk Nation. I'm Perry Kostidakis -- let's jump in. More news on the recruiting trail for FSU -- this time in the form of a 2023 linebacker commit, DeMarco Ward out of Duluth, Georgia. A three-star prospect, the Seminoles earned his pledge over conference opponents Louisville, Wake Forest, and Duke as well as the UCF Knights and Memphis Tigers. Ward stands at 6-foot-2, 205-pounds and accumulated nearly 80 tackles (65 of which were solo), three sacks, and an interception last season. In addition to linebacker, he gets reps at wide receiver, as well as playing basketball and running track to complement his gridiron exploits. Ward's ranking doesn't immediately jaw drop -- he's a newly-christened three-star -- but his highlights show an affinity for contact, an ability to diagnose plays, and some impressive flashes of athleticism. He's a nice addition to a 2023 class that's looking to hear to some good news as we get into July -- a month where FSU has the chance to snag several commits, mostly blue-chip. Some major football news in the ACC, with the conference dropping divisions starting in 2023 and instead having teams play three permanent opponents while rotating other programs on the schedule so that each team has the chance to play a home and away game at each member school. That's a benefit not lost on FSU athletic director Michael Alford, who said in a press release that “The new format means our season ticket holders will see every ACC team play in Doak Campbell Stadium over a four-year period.” As part of the new arrangement, Florida State will be facing off against the Clemson Tigers, Miami (FL) Hurricanes, and Syracuse Orange yearly. Why Syracuse? Our sources have said that rather than saddle FSU with a trap game in Georgia Tech each year, FSU lobbied for a matchup that would help expand its geographical footprint as well as present a little bit less of a challenge, given that its two permanent matchups are against two of the bigger names in the conference. For those curious, outside of FSU, Miami's other two permanent opponents are Boston College and Louisville, while Clemson is paired up with Georgia Tech and NC State. FSU track star Trey Cunningham became the second Nole in school history to be named a finalist for The Bowerman — one of three male finalists for college track and field's most prominent individual award. Via FSU, he was the first athlete in NCAA history to run 13.22 or faster nine times in the 110m hurdles and the only athlete to run 7.42 or faster four times in the 60m hurdles. Of the three finalists, Cunningham is the only athlete to be undefeated against collegians in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Cunningham went 20-for-20 against collegiate competition. That's the major news of today -- you can read up on all of these stories and more on TomahawkNation.com, where you can always stay updated on all the latest things Florida State. Thank you for listening, thank you for supporting the pod network, please rate five stars and leave a comment if you haven't yet, have a great second half of your week and we'll see you next time.
