Remi Kessler began documenting homelessness in Los Angeles in 2015. He produced and directed THE ADVOCATES, a full-length feature documentary providing a sweeping look at the history and causes of LA's homeless crisis and an intimate view of the tireless work of advocates striving to create better lives for their homeless clients. The film premiered at the 2018 Los Angeles Film Festival, followed by a successful festival run, multiple community screenings frequently moderated by Remi, and worldwide distribution and streaming. Since THE ADVOCATES, Remi produced and directed a series of six films for UCLA and the Los Angeles Department of Mental Health which are utilized to educate social workers and graduate students on mental illness and homelessness. Under proposed Federal Government changes to Australian film funding, most documentaries will lose a subsidy they previously relied upon. Already the bridesmaid in the film industry, the documentary sector is feeling like it now won't even be invited to the wedding. Film-maker Mitzi Goldman was due to appear before a Senate committee looking into this last Friday, but the hearing was cancelled because of the Canberra lockdown. Her Documentary Australia Foundation has meanwhile written an open letter to the government.

As a housewife, Carole Dean, took a $20 bill and turned it into a $50 million a year industry when she coined the phrase “short ends” and began buying and selling film left over from production. She was instrumental in the birth of the Hollywood independent film community which took advantage of her discounted raw stock. In 1992, Carole created the Roy W. Dean Grant which has provided filmmakers with millions of dollars in goods and services and played a crucial role in establishing the careers of our most important documentary filmmakers. Carole is the author of The Art of Film Funding: Alternative Financing Concepts, now in its second edition, and The Art of Manifesting: Creating Your Future.
