Izzy is the Founder of Animals First on the Second, as well as a personal trainer, nutritional coach and animal activist. Izzy's vegan journey began almost eight years ago when he was bed ridden following a range of injuries and minor surgeries, leaving him with a physical disability. Izzy wanted to rehabilitate himself and find a way out of his poor health, so he started conducting his own research. He came across a range of documentaries and ended up spending a whole weekend watching documentaries such as Vegucated, What The Health and Earthlings. Izzy watched Gary Yourofsky's speech three times and went vegan overnight. Izzy wanted to help people improve their health through adopting the vegan lifestyle, so he gained qualifications in personal training and nutrition. Izzy was the Nutrition Counsellor at a vegan medical clinic in Brooklyn and has since opened his own small private training studio and online coaching business. Not long after going vegan, Izzy and 2 others founded Vegans of New York with the aim of uniting the vegan and activist community in their local area. Izzy then went on to create Animals First on the Second (AFOTS), a global campaign where activists fast on the second of every month to raise awareness about how animals are treated in the agricultural industry. In this episode, Izzy's shares his hopes for the future of AFOTS, his passion for vegan education, as well as creating and producing rap music with an animal rights message. https://www.instagram.com/fastagainstslaughter/https://www.facebook.com/groups/138314033456715/https://www.fastagainstslaughter.org/https://www.instagram.com/izzyjacobus/https://youtu.be/eYxOtBa5rHc

Hi Plant Friends and welcome to another episode of the PBN Podcast. I am your host Robbie Lockie. On this weeks episode we meet the bubbly and colourful vegan Jasmin Singer. At the age of twenty-four, Jasmin Singer turned to veganism after watching a film about factory farming. Learning about the horrors of the dairy and egg production led her to incorporate animal rights into her LGBTQ+ and feminist activism. Jasmin then began volunteering at PETA's headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, and began steering her career toward animal rights activism. As well as being a leading expert, Jasmin Singer is now a hugely visible presence within the vegan community. She is a coveted speaker on topics including radical body positivity, personal narrative as a means of social justice, and how to change the world for animals. She is also the author of The VegNews Guide to Being a Fabulous Vegan and Always Too Much and Never Enough: A Memoir. Along with her co-host Mariann Sullivan, Jasmin and her team continue to “change the world for animals” on the long-running, award-winning podcast, Our Hen House. I was fortunate to feature on one of their episodes, I will link it down in the show notes. Jasmin's incredible contribution to animal rights does not stop there. She is the former Senior Editor for VegNews Magazine and the longtime love columnist and celebrity interviewer. In 2020, Jasmin had the enviable job of interviewing actor Joaquin Phoenix, who had used his prominence to not only effectively veganize the menu at the Academy Awards, but also treat his acceptance speech as a way of sharing his concerns for animal rights issues. You may well have seen Jasmin appearing in various documentaries such as The Ghosts In Our Machine and Vegucated. She has also contributed to many anthologies such as Running Eating Thinking; Defiant Daughters; Voices for Animal Liberation; Queer & Trans Voices; and Circles of Compassion. As an actor, Jasmin starred in the film The Bra Mitzvah and has appeared in television commercials. She holds a BFA in Acting from Pace University, and is a certified holistic health counsellor. Jasmin is a long-time activist across many realms, including animal activism, LGBTQ activism, and antiracism. As always if you love this episode please don't forget to comment, like and share and if you are on Apple Podcasts please do leave us a review it really helps get the message out there. Sam Turnbull NEVER in a million years thought she would ever become vegan. She grew up in a family of foodies: chefs, butchers, and hunters (yes, it's true). Her household had a flock of chickens (both for eggs and for eating), the freezers were stocked full of meat, steaks were cooked rare, and there were even real animal heads decorating the walls (not that she ever liked the heads). Now, doesn't that just sound like the most vegan household you have ever heard of? Probably not. So, what inspired Sam to switch to veganism? Sam watched a documentary about being vegan called Vegucated. Then the next morning she woke up and decided to try going vegan. She cleaned out her cupboards and fridge to start this fresh new adventure. While making such a big change, she needed even more inspiration. So she watched Forks Over Knives. Then she read every health, environment, and animal cruelty book and film she could get her hands on. It made 100% logical sense to be vegan. It's better for health, the environment, and, of course, the animals. But she felt conflicted because she still craved meat and cheese, and she really didn't want to be “that weird vegan girl.” Years later, Sam has two vegan cookbooks, a popular blog It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken, an awesome YouTube channel, and a hungry following on Instagram. We discuss her new cookbook, Fast Easy Cheap Vegan in this episode, with a special promotional bonus for Plantfull Life listeners! Let's get Vegucated ... with the fun and fabulous film by that name from radiant auteur Marisa Miller-Wolfson, our guest today on Main Street Vegan. Marisa's delightful documentary follows the adventures (and misadventures) of three meat-and-cheese-loving New Yorkers (she found them on Craigslist!) who agree to go vegan—no animal products at all—for 90 days. As warm and funny and accepting as her film, Marisa wants to talk with YOU about all things veg.
