The man behind the sounds of the ALW POD, Mikey Johnson as re-emerged!!! Psychonautics (from the Ancient Greek ψυχή psychē 'soul, spirit, mind' and ναύτης naútēs 'sailor, navigator') refers both to a methodology for describing and explaining the subjective effects of altered states of consciousness, including those induced by meditation or mind-altering substances, and to a research cabal in which the researcher voluntarily immerses themselves into an altered mental state in order to explore the accompanying experiences. …Yes, this one gets deep.. Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Todd Rundgren is in a class all his own. Whether scoring Top 40 hits, playing all of the instruments on his albums or wildly experimenting with musical genres, Rundgren is continuously pushing the boundaries of creativity. That ethos and ingenuity can be found in his numerous solo albums from the 70s to present day, with his band Utopia and as a record producer for musicians like Patti Smith, The Psychedelic Furs and MeatLoaf. The trailblazing Rundgren is also a pioneer in computer technology and multimedia – creating the first color graphics tablet, first interactive album and first interactive concert tour. Todd Rundgren tells Alec how he pulls off making the music he wants to make, how he almost changed careers to become a computer programmer and how psychedelics helped him rethink music completely. In this episode we have the challenging job of getting our head around the psychology of altered states of consciousness or ‘exceptional human experiences' as today's specialist calls them. Are they mere illusions of the mind? Does their ability to radically change our world view and sense of meaning in the world give them a special status in psychology and mental health? And how do we talk scientifically about significant similarities between such experiences across different times and cultures that appear to imply the existence of an alternative kind of ‘reality' what ever ‘reality' is. Fortunately, to navigate this bag of worms, we have a researcher who has devoted his career to the study of these experiences both psychedelic and other, Dr. David Luke. David Luke is currently a module leader of the Psychology of Exceptional Human Experience in Greenwich Universities Psychology and Counselling Department, a course he has been running since 2009. He is also currently an Honorary Senior Lecturer for the Centre for Psychedelic Research, Division of Brain Sciences, Imperial College London. He was President of the Parapsychological Association between 2009 and 2011, and received the Faculty's first Inspirational Teaching Award (2016) from the University of Greenwich. He is a prolific author and editor of books, and today we'll be discussing his 2017 book ‘Otherworlds: Psychedelics and exceptional human experiences' and his new book, a collections of essays he has edited called ‘DMT Entity Encounters: Dialogues on the Spirit Molecule' He is also the co-founder of the Breaking Convention Conference on Psychedelics. What we discuss in this episode: 00:00 Intro 04:20 Measuring subjective qualitative experiences 11:45 The different types of altered states of consciousness 18:00 Reduced activity in the DMN (Default Mode Network) during alternate states of consciousness, but increased brain region connectivity 21:30 Evaluating mystical experiences psychologically 33:00 The connection between psychedelics and telepathy 57:00 Psychonautics - trying to map psychedelic realms and types of beings encountered and much much more (full show notes here) References: William James - Radical Empiricism During Altered states there is a reduced activity in the DMN but increased brain region connectivity Johns Hopkins and NYU studies - Intensity of mystical experience correlation with positive clinical outcomes. %50 drop in atheism among DMT experiencers Stephen Szára - first DMT experiments in 1950's Charles Laughlin - Polyphasic culture and transpersonal anthropology Medicalisation and Reciprocity Specialists Symposium
Come celebrate the discovery of LSD with The Kaleidoscopic Boys of Comedy™ On April 19th 79 years ago, Albert Hofmann had the first semi-intentional dose of Lysergic acid diethylamide. He then famously hopped on a bicycle, and the rest is dilated history. Since that bizarre day, it has changed the lives of countless people including Shane and Ramin's. Oh yeah, it works! But experiences vary. Hear how The KBC's™ experience with acid differs from mushrooms. Despite such positive impacts on our lives, Shane has learned from his 'A Good Trip Tour' that not everyone has a good trip. We explore some of psychedelics' past and Shane unveils some entheogenic plans for the future. Take a synesthetic ride on our Betterizer wherever you listen to podcasts or add some visuals with Spotify or YouTube PS – Afterwards, you can watch Shane and Ramin tell some animated DMT stories on Comedy Central's ‘Tale's From The Trip' and see Ramin in Shane's documentary ‘Psychonautics' on Amazon Prime. Shelli Reneé Joye – A Psychonaut's Invitation to TantraAired Monday, February 14, 2022 at 11:00 AM PST / 2:00 PM EST / 7:00 PM GMT / 8:00 PM CET Throughout the millennia, shamans, saints, and yogis have discovered how the brain-mind can be reprogrammed to become a powerful instrument facilitating access to higher states of consciousness. In particular, the written Tantric texts of India and Tibet describe, in extraordinarily precise detail, interior transformations of conscious energy along with numerous techniques for stimulating, modulating, and transforming consciousness to reach increasingly higher states and stages of awareness. Join Voice Visionary Kara Johnstad and Author Shelli Reneé Joye in a heartfelt conversation on esoteric Tantra, What is Psychonautics? What methods are available to tune and direct consciousness to reach heightened mystical states? How can our voice direct consciousness and create pulsating vibratory fields of well-being? Can meditation open up tones arising from within our body? How is Tantra relevant for contemporary society?Author of the new book, Tantric Psychophysics, A Structural Map of Altered States and the Dynamics of Consciousness, Shelli shares insights from her practices for consciousness exploration, including prayer and mantra, emptying the mind, psychedelics, yoga, and visualization of interior physiology. It's hard to take comedian, adventurer and science enthusiast Shane Mauss seriously as he proclaims he tries to work as little as possible when he sits down with Tom after hosting the Meet Delic two-day wellness event and in between producing and hosting two podcasts: Here We Are and Mind Under Matter. Speculate on his work ethic as you will, but be certain Shane pulls no punches in this interview as he dives into time travel, dissociative disorders, the evolution of his career and mental health since the release of his documentary Psychonautics: A Comic's Exploration of Psychedelics, and the merits, or lack thereof, of microdosing. Shane flexes the depth of his scientific knowledge and natural skepticism in a healthy and complex discussion of psychedelics, cognitive bias, creativity and apathy. With such a healthy balance of skepticism and surrender, Shane's interview was separated into two parts to give justice to his refreshing candor and insight into mental health. Shane Mauss been a stand-up comedian since 2004 and touring full-time since 2007. He has been interviewing scientists each week since 2014 for the Here We Are Podcast. In 2019 He released the documentary Psychonautics. In 2021 Shane joined artist Ramin Nazer to form Mind Under Matter. Is it possible to bring the level of reverence and integrity that we see in traditional plant medicine ceremonies into our own homes? Koen and Sebastian, the team over at Portier Supplies have created a product that is doing exactly this. "Psychedelics deserve a beautiful place in people's lives, not shoved in a closet, hidden away somewhere'" — Sebastian from Portier Supplies, HEx Podcast #50 There is a lot of shame that many well-intentioned psychedelic users carry around due to misinformed stigma and misplaced projections. Initiatives such as Portier Supplies are putting that to an end. This conversation is a dive into psychedelic healing and the exciting realms beyond, as well as a front row seat to the tricky business of psychedelic entrepreneurship. What We Cover: 2:40 - The journey that led to the creation of Portier 11:35 - What the Portal Box is 17:00 - The true meaning of luxury 20:05 - What comes after healing with psychedelics? 24:00 - Maintaining integrity when combining business and spirituality 43:25 - Growth as the accumulation of responsibility 44:25 - Practices that support psychedelic use 53:55 - Bufo vs Ayahuasca MUCH MORE... .. "Our ability to be able to research things from other animals points of view... is such a great way to pop out of ourselves a bit and see things a little more objectively and bring out that alien anthropologist point of view. It´s something scientists do well, comedians do well and psychedelics do well..."Shane Mauss is a comedian, podcaster, science and psychedelic enthusiast and modern day explorer of human nature. I´ve followed Shane´s wide-ranging corpus of material for some years now and was so happy to finally get the opportunity to talk on the podcast. Naturally, the discussion was a light-hearted probe into the strangeness and beauty of science and human experience, alongside ways to be serious about not getting too caught up in what we´ve decided reality looks like. Shane is well known known for his vivid and humorous tales of the psychedelic realm - which we talk about in terms of nuance, rather than dogmatism - as well as ideas for handling what we´re presented with in daily life. Comics have a special way of communicating important ideas to wider audiences. Science included. Something mainstream media, politics, academia and much of pop-culture simply cannot do so well at all. If you´re at all fed up with being told how to do things this way or that and simply want to listen to someone who as explored a LOT of territory, you´ll dig this episode. It was one of our favourites so far. Do check out Shane´s Here We Are Podcast as well as his new one with Ramin Nazer Mind Under Matter and his movie Psychonautics. Following the interview, DJ & I continue on with some thoughts and ideas that came to mind so be sure to stick it out to the end! For those interested in joining the next Emptiness Project retreat (hopefully later in 2021 and/or 2022 in the US, Peru & Europe) please make sure to follow us and join our mailing list for the latest news. What befell Lilith, the first female? Who raped Eve & why? Did Demiurge become Satan? Are we in hell? Will spilt seed attract unborn spirits? Who drained the Archon force? What begot the dark goddess aspect? Is incubation key to contact the other side? Why did gnosis span from hedonism to celibacy? What was Jesus initiated into? Did he wed Mary? Was Judas history's first patsy? Did Sabbateans hail evil as a short cut? Is Buddhism gnostic? + Hear our homage to Hypatia! :: :: :: :: All programs are gratis & listener funded. This week’s guest is author, culture critic, and philosopher of the weird Erik Davis, whose work has been one of my main inspirations for almost ten years. His latest work of epic scholarship, High Weirdness: Drugs, Esoterica, and Visionary Experience in the Seventies, is an exploration of topics I presumed inaccessible to academic inquiry so masterful I’ve been evangelizing it for months and basically forced a copy on my boss (David Krakauer, President of the Santa Fe Institute, who was a guest in Episode 75). In this episode we peer into the intersection of psychedelics, madness, systems science, postmodernism, and religious studies to ask about the truly other that refuses to allow us a clean answer to the questions, “What is the Real?” and “Did that just really happen?” Strap in for one of the headiest and most important conversations that we’ve ever had on Future Fossils…Join the Future Fossils Podcast Patreon for exclusive perks like an extra 10 minutes of this conversation, in which Erik & Michael discuss “black goo.”Visit Erik’s website to sign up for his email updates (always wonderful) and stay abreast of upcoming events, such as his talk at the SF Psychedelic Society on Thursday Dec 19.Get a copy of High Weirdness at MIT Press.Erik’s appearance on Future Fossils Episode 99 (a kind of prequel to this conversation). My 2011 and 2012 appearances on Erik’s podcast, Expanding Mind.Erik and I discuss over video chat (part 1, part 2) the revised and expanded third edition of his book Techgnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information.Shop through my Amazon storefront and support the show indirectly with your purchases:https://amazon.com/storefront/michaelgarfieldJoin the Future Fossils Facebook Discussion Grouphttps://facebook.com/groups/futurefossilsShow music by Evan “Skytree” Snyder feat. And in that sense, the real is fundamentally traumatic.”Perturbations of the reality field.Extimacy.“That’s not me…or if it is, I’m not me anymore.”Refusing to remain within the purely human. To lean out. To open a portal. The Weird vs. The Uncanny.Fiction vs. Religion.“In some sense Burning Man and the spirituality of Burning Man, if you want to call it that – the invention of new subjectivities, the development of an ecstatic culture at this end stage of capitalism and modern mythology – in a way is a kind of later iteration of the things I saw in the 70s.”Material agency in the practice of science. “Science is not practiced by humans alone.” “Drugs as active participants in the enactment of their effects.”“The thing about thinking is that sometimes it’s really clear the way you are actively putting things together, or actively exploring. But then sometimes it seems as if you are almost kind of taken over by an idea, and then the idea has stuff it wants to do, and you are just the connector or vehicle for it. What it means to think is to be in relationship to enigmas that have things to say.”“With reductionism in general, it’s very difficult to explain novelty.”“A psychedelic compound sitting on the shelf is not psychedelic. It’s in the interaction that you explore and discover its phenomenological features.”“There’s no way out of environmental effects in the psychedelic experience - both in the set and setting, and in terms of whatever mysterious multiplicities lie in the material itself. So there’s no way to do capital S Science with psychedelics, despite the fact that they are material molecules that reliably have a certain kind of metabolic arc and can be explained in terms of how they are broken down in the body and even light up certain regions or the brain, etc., etc. I think it’s kind of wonderful. But I think that’s where the weird is: the weird is in that. The weird is in the way you can’t get out of the loop.”Psychogenic Networks and Maximal Entropy Production.“If attention is the fuel, then everywhere we turn, we’re producing self-fulfilling prophecies.”Living Fictions.Weird Studies Episode 36.Lachmann et al. 1999 re: Optimal Encoding & Fermi’s Paradox & “The symbols of the divine first emerge in the trash stratum.”“The revelation is always relativized. Once we’re in this cybernetic situation, then not only do we not know, ‘Is that noise or is that signal?,’ but even when you do get a message, you don’t get to know. Because you’ve knocked out that realm of certainty that in the past said, ‘What you’re thinking is true.’”“Now we get to see what it looks like when the symbolic order, consensus reality, breaks down, melts, mutiplies, becomes weaponized, and we try to make our way through that. And it’s not so fun. It’s not so pretty. It’s not so groovy.”Psychonautics as preparation for the insane world we now live in, where the weird has mainstreamed. Shane Mauss is a standup comedian, a podcaster, and an explorer of inner space. In this interview, we discuss Shane's last big tour, "A Good Trip" which featured standup comedy about psychedelic research and psychedelics in our culture. More recently, Shane made a documentary called Psychonautics: A Comic's Exploration of Psychedelics. Check it out at: https://www.psychonauticsfilm.com/ He also has a new tour, Stand Up Science, coming to a city near you. Learn more at http://www.shanemauss.com/stand-up-science-preview This interview was part of some research for a project on public relations for "fringe" movements. We don't talk about travel, an expedition, or anything like that. But, after watching Psychonautics recently, it became very clear to me that Shane embodies the spirit of adventure and exploration that this show is about. Shane's podcast, Here We Are, features weekly interviews with scientists around the world. Shane Mauss is an old friend, a wonderful comedian, a lover of science, a skeptic about all things including whether he's a skeptic maybe who knows, and more. He's got a documentary out this week called Psychonautics, a podcast called Here We Are, and a live comedy show called Standup Science, and I recommend them all. But maybe start here with this. Thanks and enjoy!
Erick Godsey has spent the better part of his young life studying Philosophy, Psychonautics, and a wide range of Psychology. He's made it his mission to seek out and scientifically study the stories that heal people. Through his works on how to heal a traumatic past and how to create the future you want, he's formulated an extremely articulate way of relaying his findings to the world. We explore the ways in which he's creating his own ideal reality, through conscious chaos and the inevitable after mass of expanding and evolving that come with it. He holds nothing back as we sort through his perspective when it comes to open relationships, analyzing our most intimate of dreams, and giving in to our deepest, darkest sexual fantasies. Erick has experimented extensively with psychedelics, currently having just exceeded a whole year of weekly microdosing with LSD. In this episode, he describes his experiences with everything from Shrooms, to Ayahuasca, Hauchuma, and even Vilca (known as the most mind bending plant medicine). He also breaks down the Microdosing basics and the ways in which it's affected his life, including both the positive and negative side effects. Stay tuned, this episodes will quite literally melt your brain before rewiring it for the better... Ryan and Jameson have taken a Flinstones Chewable or two in their day so they thought it only appropriate to ask comedian/podcaster/psychonaut Shane Mauss all about psychedelics. Though a hot button issue, more and more research has shown the benefits of psychedelics in patients with PTSD, anxiety and more. Shane also hosts a great science podcast called Here We Are! Comedian, psychonaut and star/creator of the new film "Psychonautics", Shane Mauss drops by the IAH podcast zone to take us on a journey of his life, his comedy and the creation of his new film. The latter is a first hand documentary style account of Shane's deep dive into the world of psychedelics and their effect not just on him but also on humanity. Our conversation recounts some hilarious moments during its making and some cautionary tales that are essential for anyone on the psychedelic path. An eclectic BEHIND THE LENS this week filled with intensity and energy thanks to our very special guests, actress ELAINE BALLACE and comedian SHANE MAUSS, plus our exclusive interview with BLAKE JENNER! But before we get to our live guests, take a listen to our exclusive pre-recorded interview with actor turned screenwriter BLAKE JENNER. Known best for his role as "Ryder" in the smash television series "Glee", Blake steps up his game and expands his horizons as not only lead actor in BILLY BOY, but the film's screenwriter and a "creative producer". An intensely personal and emotionally visceral character study of a young man with potential who is grappling to come to terms with his past, BILLY BOY boasts an emotional rawness that is laid bare through indelible performances. Listen as Blake goes in-depth talking about not only his writing process but character development, working with his fellow castmates, director Brad Buecker, and stepping into the producer's chair as well. Then we shift gears with comedian turned filmmaker SHANE MAUSS. Fresh off his win at Dances With Films for the Audience Award for Best Documentary, Shane talks candidly and excitedly about his documentary PSYCHONAUTICS: A COMIC'S EXPLORATION OF PSYCHEDELICS. A winner on the stand-up circuit, Shane has long had a passion for blending comedy and science in his routines and his podcasts, and he does just that with PSYCHONAUTICS. Shane is no holds barred as he talks about using his personal experiences with psychedelics as a starting point for this documentary, working with director Brian Bellinkoff, bringing science and experts into the cinematic mix, as well as his huge learning curve in the editing bay. And then there's the effervescence and exuberance of actress ELAINE BALLACE who is on hand to talk about her latest film, and the final film of her dear friend Marvin Kaplan, LOOKIN' UP. If Elaine doesn’t pack your day with heartfelt positivity nothing will as she is boundless in her energy and affection for Marv, himself a beloved figure to classic film (and "Top Cat" cartoon) fans everywhere, as well as the film's star Steve Guttenberg. While a love fest for Marv Kaplan, Elaine also talks about her current television series on the Urban Movie Channel, "The Rich and the Ruthless", an upcoming film project starting to shoot in July, and her take on staying active and vital as an actress over the decades. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

This week’s guest is comedian Shane Mauss, whose psychedelic standup A Good Trip blew minds at over 100 tour stops last year, and whose documentary film Psychonautics takes us on Shane’s adventures in psychedelic therapies. He also hosts the Here We Are Podcast, where he interviews scientists of all stripes and mines their research for standup inspiration…Shane’s always been a rigorous thinker, a legitimate and respectable skeptic, which made his inquiries into the weird realms of psychedelia so interesting to me. He started tripping to self-medicate for his lifelong depression a few years ago but hisHe and I disagreed for years about the nature and validity of the phenomenon known as “synchronicity” – that everything is linked behind the scenes, no coincidences – but this summer he texted me to tell me he’d had a revelatory experience and that I was right all along. The next thing I heard from him, he was on Duncan Trussell Family Hour Podcast talking about how he had just gotten out of a mental institution. So WHAT EXACTLY was I right about, again?? We go deep in this episode about the nature of reality and madness in this warm and funny conversation (in which he shared what he actually saw that put him in the psych ward)…http://shanemauss.com http://herewearepodcast.com TOPICS- How the universe is wearing stripes and plaid (just like in some of Alex Grey’s art).- What’s behind that crazy look in someone’s eyes.- Simulation theory vs. the brain’s innate virtual reality.- What people are really seeing when people say they see God.- A bunch of awesome trip reports from Shane.- Shane getting courted as a clinical subject for new extended-state DMT trials.- Time as a multidimensional landscape of rhyming moments- Marshall McLuhan’s “invisible environment” as it relates to memory as a mutable substance, altered every time it’s accessed.- Evolving through the layers of the multiverse from animal to human and beyond.- The Evolution of God and how we’re all participating in the new empathy of a deity that does not have it figured out.- A new kind of psychedelic science.- Princeton Engineering Anomalies Lab and the possibility that the so-called future is actually present and accessible via longer wavelengths.- and a bunch more… QUOTES“I found out years ago that I can just gobble up some mushrooms two or three times a week for a few weeks, and that’ll get rid of my depression for a few months or so…I started thinking, ‘What if instead of just getting rid of my depression, I could actually feel GOOD?’”“The DMT world feels very ‘top down,’ very ‘creator’ type of thing…”“Sobriety is not really a thing that works, even though I've got to do it for now…”“Why try to envision Jesus doing something – why try to have a dream where you’re seeing Jesus and talking to Jesus, when it’s just in your head? Just BE Jesus!”“A lot of this stuff gets pretty far away from the scientific method, you know?” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Henry is a psychonaut. A psychonaut or “sailor of the soul” in literal greek, is a person who explores activities by which altered states of consciousness are induced and utilized for spiritual purposes or exploration of the human condition. These alternative states of consciousness can be achieved through a variety of means including meditation, rituals, or drugs. Henry has chosen to experience these states using variety of chemicals including LSD, AL-LAD, Salvia, and Hawaiian Baby Woodrose Seeds along with an extensive examination of the scientific literature in his search for enlightening experiences and metaphysical self improvement. Journey with us as Henry attempts to navigate the rites of passage of young adulthood and a dangerous legal climate, while maintaining a highly functional and productive life despite a pressing need to go beyond the conventional in his own mind and the world around him. He also takes great care to maintain harm reduction practices for himself and other participants in the psychedelic experiences he describes. Seth Fitzgerald from The Drug Classroom joins your host Glen Marshall for an in-depth discussion with this highly functional future pharmacologist.Resources:https://www.erowid.org/http://www.bluelight.orghttps://www.youtube.com/user/TheDrugClassroomhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychonautics
