John Brantingham was a driving force behind Mt San Antonio College’s creative writing club for decades. If you went to SAC in the last 30 years, you probably recognize his trademark shock of white hair and weary expression. He was a fixture around the 26 Building where everyone takes their humanities classes, and he taught all three levels of transfer-required English too. Acclaimed Pomona poet Michael Torres says John is a major pillar of the college for aspiring writers. John, his wife Anne, and coworkers Lloyd Aquino and Michelle Dougherty organized Mt SAC’s Culturama and the SGV Lit Fest – events that gave young SGV and IE writers their first chance to get on stage and read beside headliner-level authors. John is currently on a much-needed leave from education, living in West New York. Remote teaching and the cost of living in the area proved to be too much, so he and Anne decided to focus on their own work for a while. Since they may not return, we’re toasting John’s career at SAC – the school he went to – and sharing some of his advice on writing for a living. John is currently editor of the Journal of Radical Wonder, an artistic journal on Medium. He strongly encourages SGV writers to submit their work.

This THROWBACK episode features Michael Torres discussing how school choice can help parents get the quality education their children deserve. ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES: Our old, exclusionary, geographically-based education system is not educating children the way it promises to. Parents have been fighting for the ability to get their kids into schools that don't constantly fail them decade after decade, only to be denied by the public education establishment, and the various policies promoted by the school choice movement give parents autonomy over their children's education. Joining The Brian Nichols Show today is Michael Torres from the Commonwealth Foundation. Michael is the Senior Communications Office over at the Commonwealth Foundation and joins the show to help dispel some myths regarding school choice and to speak to the value that school choice has in helping further our youths' education. Michael Torres doesn’t revel in the idea of ‘making good and getting out of the hood.’NPR’s Best Books of 2020? Yeah, that’s pretty sweet.Getting paid to write and teach? Of course, that’s good.Being able to hold the memories of your past life as a graffiti artist and not feel like you betrayed or lost who you were? Maybe that’s what success is. Torres was born in 1986 and raised in South Pomona. The speaker in his book, An Incomplete List of Names, describes the joy and pain of growing up part of a graffiti crew: Being there for a homie who just got dumped and wanted to do figure 8’s in the mud in his convertible… Inspecting a bullet hole at school in the computer lab… attending numerous post-funeral family reunions. These are the kinds of memories Torres reckoned with for years after he moved to Minnesota to pursue his Master’s of Fine Art. His book’s title is a wide open reference to everything and everyone he left behind. He laughs now at the life-changing day when he got arrested for painting on the roof of the Indian Hill Mall, but the bulk of An Incomplete List of Names struggles (not to be read, Torres is very clearly spoken). It struggles with violence, racism, family taken away, friends forgotten, and the shedding of a constructed identity - REMEK, the painter. Most of all, Torres grapples with understanding his motivations to move away to evolve as a writer, and the consequences of that. However, by getting through it Torres has created the opportunity to construct his identity once again. Whether or not he intended to, he also gave his readers from the San Gabriel Valley a great gift in laying out his journey. It may help them on their own.Buy a special graffiti-autographed copy of An Incomplete List of Names here.Buy a less special, regular copy for $2 less here. A real-life Indiana Jones?  The word on the street is that Michael Torres is Ph.D. by day and a treasure hunter by night. Torres claims he has an aeronautical engineering degree from Duke University. Don’t believe him? He has a photo of his diploma. Michael Torres also claims to have taught at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. He has the library card to prove it.  When he’s not in the classroom, Torres is out looking for treasure. He claims he raided catacombs in Turkey, he’s recovered one of Sir Francis Drake’s sunken ship. And most recently, he discovered what he believes is a pre-Incan Peruvian burial mask off the eastern coast of Florida.  But like unlike Dr. Indiana Jones, some have accused him of stolen valor by exaggerating his military career. They say Torres falsely represented himself as a war hero with two Purple Heart medals.  His critics say not to believe a word he says. For instance, Michael Torres says he discovered a mass Jewish mass grave in Savannah, Georgia. Is he a serious treasure hunter or just a hack who makes up stories in order to gain attention?  As a spectator in the world of fraud, I allow myself to get sucked in towards the center of the storm of lies. I do this with great caution. The closer I get, the more believable the stories get. And unlike victims, who are emotionally and financially invested, it's easier for me to circle just outside the hurricane's eye wall.  In today’s episode, I’ll let you be the judge. Is Michael Torres a war hero/treasure hunter? Or is he a con artist? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A Florida treasure-hunting CEO says he was tricked by a conman. Seafarer Exploration, a treasure salvage company, has spent the last 13 years trying to find a 300-year-old Spanish galleon sunken off the coast of Florida. A galleon is a large sailboat, with multiple leveled decks, and 3 or 4 masts. These ships were designed to carry large treasures found in the new world and bring them back to Spain.  Lost treasure In 1715, a Spanish fleet loaded up with silver departed from Havana, Cuba. Seven days later, a hurricane off the east coast of central Florida swooped in and took down eleven of the twelve ships. Hence, the reason they call this part of Florida the treasure coast.  But as you can imagine, trying to find the mother load buried underneath the ocean is like finding a needle in a haystack. If Seafarer Exploration has any chance of finding this treasure, they are going to need to find someone who can build a ship that is powerful enough to scan the ocean floor. Imagine a giant floating metal detector that can capture high-resolution images of the seabed. That's when Kyle Kennedy, CEO of Seafarer Exploration, met a man who said, "Sure. I can build you this machine." His name was Dr. Michael Torres.   Kyle Kennedy claims that Michael Torres presented himself as an aeronautical engineer who graduated with a doctorate degree from Duke University. Torres also said he taught at MIT Draper labs and represented the NSA while also working on multiple classified government contracts. Kyle Kennedy couldn't believe it. This Dr. Michael Torres guy was perfect! And on top of an unbelievable resume, Kennedy says that Dr. Torres was a wounded war hero, who served two tours in Afghanistan. He was even awarded the Purple Heart medal.  The lawsuit Fast-forward a few years later, Kyle Kennedy is now suing Michael Torres for fraud. He says Michael Torres is a con artist who faked his credential.  So, who is this guy? Dr. Michael Torres? I'm going to track him down to find out if he really is who they say he is. It turns out that the conman in this story is not who you would expect. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Torres noted that the REIT industry is entering 2019 with attractive dividend yields and record-low leverage. On the other hand, private market participants have a lower cost of capital and the ability to outbid their public market counterparts. Hyun said he expects some property types will trade at discounts to NAV for the foreseeable future. As for M&A activity, public to public deals are not as likely because “investors aren’t making enough of a distinction between companies and management teams to whom they want to grant the cost of capital advantage.”

The morning will begin with an update on Albert Woodfox's case. I heard things went well in court Tuesday, March 3. We'll be speaking with exonerated Anglola 3 member Robert Hillary King and other supporters, Albert's brother, Michael Mable and Parnell Herbert, about the hearing. This conversation will be followed by a talk with Todd Evans, playwright.
