You already know how to talk about yourself persuasively,” says Sav Rodgers.  Osterman also shares his journey creating his award-winning short script and gives advice to writers who are thinking of creating their own short film project. “I don't think there's been a better time to be making short format content than right now. The demand for it seems to be expanding every time I turn around. I think if that's something that you're interested in, go after it. You know, I think there are more opportunities to distribute that form of content than there have ever been. I think we've got a generation now that's grown up with TikTok and social media and much shorter, digestible content that, whether it's conditioning or just sort of lowering of attention spans, I think more people are more tuned into short form content than they have ever been before. Today we welcome Rachel Noll James to discuss her latest film project INGRESS. Biography Rachel is an award winning screenwriter, actor and filmmaker with a focus on female driven films and bringing the female gaze to stories and genres traditionally dominated by a male perspective. Rachel grew up in Santa Fe, NM. She moved to Los Angeles to attend Occidental College, and went on to study and work in the LA area for over a decade. Rachel spent her first few years in LA working solely as an actor before she found herself getting increasingly restless waiting for other people to offer her work. So she started creating her own. Rachel's first feature was ‘Don't Pass Me By,' a film she wrote, produced, and starred in alongside Hollywood veterans Keith David, C. Thomas Howell and Sean Stone. Rachel won Best Feature Writer at the LA Femme Festival for the script, and the film was released worldwide in February of 2014. Soon after, Rachel produced and co-wrote the feature film ‘The Storyteller' which won the Silver Prize in the Family Film category in the PAGE International Screenwriting Awards and was released on Hallmark Movies Now after winning multiple awards in the festival circuit. Additional credits include the multiple award-winning short film ‘Paramnesia' that was released as part of acclaimed horror collective Fun Size Horror Volume 1, the short film ‘Half Light' that landed Rachel as a quarter finalist in the NextTV directing talent search and was released exclusively through Seed&Spark, and the short ‘Follow The River' that won Rachel honorable mention in the Port Orchard Film Festival. Rachel is currently in post-production for her next feature film, ‘Ingress' which Rachel wrote and directed.  Slated for completion in 2022. We first met in person briefly at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 when I was on a panel with her good friend (and episode 66 guest), Kaitlyn Fae. If you follow the Department of Tangents Blog, there's a good chance you've seen some of Christina Raia's work. I featured her delightful ghost story Hello on October 23 of 2017, and another of her horror shorts, Night In, a month later. This past November, Raia debuted a different kind of film for her, a heist film called Enough with an ensemble cast. Raia says she loves to direct horror, and she's got a new horror short called “Gaze” and a new horror/comedy feature called “Silent Night” in the works. But she also hates to be pigeonholed to any particular genre or style. Which is why on May 7, she released a feature-length family dramedy she directed called About A Donkey, written by Kelsey Rauber. When matriarch Ann Owens announces to her husband Tim and three adult children, Celia, Burgh, and Annie, that she has been diagnosed with depression, no one is surprised. Ann has been keeping to herself for a while, and the kids treat the announcement with humor. What does surprise everyone is Tim's announcement that he has bought a donkey, one with deep brown eyes, just because he'd always wanted one. And he thinks it'll help. Mostly it will help Tim feel a bit more useful, having something to take care of now that his kids are grown up and he can't figure out how to help them with their problems. It's a charming comedy, born out of a desire to quietly counter an increasingly combative and unkind social and political climate. I spoke with Raia about this film and her short films, what horror and comedy have in common, Jordan Peele's work, and, of course, donkey wrangling.
