Byrd, Tom and Lux are back to take a look at the 1982 semi-obscurity The House Where Evil Dwells. This haunted house shocker is a co-production made with assistance from the legendary Toei studios. It was directed by Kevin Connor (The Land that Time Forgot) and stars Edward Albert, Susan George, and the incomparable Doug McClure. Based on an unpublished novel of the same name, it tells the story of an American family that moves to Japan and the vengeful ghosts that inhabit their house (and bodies). There's killer crabs, zen monks, Sentai on the TV, and more in this oddity that blends American and Japanese ghost movie tropes. Relax and enjoy the conversation!
We're talking about comfort watching on this episode of the Fan2Fan Podcast! Bernie and Pete continue discussing comfort watch movies and TV shows. And this episode is all about actor Doug McClure! "Out of This World" was a sitcom that aired from 1987 to 1991. The premise of the show centers around a teenage girl named Evie who on her 13th Birthday discovers that her father is an alien. The show featured Donna Pescow as Evie's mother, and secretly featured Burt Reynolds as her father. The show followed Evie's adventures as she balanced teenage life with the secrets of her extraterrestrial heritage. While "Out of This World" may not be as well-remembered as some other sitcoms of the era, it had a dedicated fan base and was known for its blend of science fiction and family comedy elements. "As an independent film director, I feel that often, the most interesting scenes in a film include the unexpected moments that were never actually specifically written in the script. When an actor takes a beat or two longer to get his emotions together while the camera is rolling, but the scene has not technically begun. Sometimes those quiet moments are the most honest and fresh. He is not "acting", he is simply "feeling", and THAT to me, can be magic on film." Tane McClure is the author of a new book: "Rescue Heart: A Love Story", based on a feature film screenplay also written by Tane. Today we're reviewing The Land That Time Forgot (1974), the story of a WWI submarine crew who gets stranded on a mysterious island populated by dinosaurs and prehistoric people. It takes itself seriously enough to wax philosophical about war and human nature, but it was also featured on Mystery Science Theatre 3000, so its profundity might have been undercut somewhat by its bad dinosaur puppets. Sumner welcomes the world's greatest living fantasy author, Michael Moorcock, back to Hard Agree for the latest installment in their ongoing series of conversations about Michael's life and work. In this second episode, Sumner & Moorcock discuss Mike's wild ride through Hollywood – including working with Irvin Kershner, Peter Weir's high-level conjuring ability, the limitations of Ray Harryhausen movies, meeting the extremely-tall Christopher Lee, scripting The Land That Time Forgot for Amicus, the brilliance & charisma of Doug McClure, working with underrated director Kevin Connor and partying with Milton Subotsky, JG Ballard, Max J Rosenberg & John Brunner. They wrap up with a discussion of Donald A Wollheim's massive contribution to the global fantasy genre, the unsung greatness of Piccadilly Cowboy authors George G Gilman & JT Edson – and Moorcock's evaluation of Eric Clapton vs Eric Burdon. This is Moorcock's Multiverse, we're just living in it.
