The making of Twilight Zone: The Movie became overshadowed by a tragic accident that killed actor Vic Morrow and two young children, Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen. They were filming a climactic rescue scene involving explosions and a low-flying helicopter during a nighttime shoot when a catastrophic crash claimed all three lives. The deaths of Vic, Myca, and Renee made it one of Hollywood's most infamous tragedies and prompted lasting concerns about on-set safety and accountability.Sources: Rubio Hancock, Víctor; “‘Keep Rolling': The Decision That Resulted in the Tragic Deaths of Two Children and a Hollywood Actor”; EL PAÍS English; Aug 29. 2023; https://english.elpais.com/culture/2023-08-29/keep-rolling-the-decision-that-resulted-in-the-tragic-deaths-of-two-children-and-a-hollywood-actor.html; accessed April 20, 2026. “The Heartbreaking Truth About the Twilight Zone Disaster”; Factinate; https://www.factinate.com/things/outrageous-facts-about-twilight-zone-disaster-hollywoods-wake-call; accessed April 20, 2026. “My‑ca Dinh Le (1975–1982)”; Find a Grave; https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/7288675/my-ca_dinh-le; accessed April 20, 2026. “Renee Shin‑Yi Chen (1976–1982)”; Find a Grave; https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/19758/renee_shin-yi-chen; accessed April 20, 2026. “Vic Morrow – Biography”; IMDb; https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0607558/bio/?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm; accessed April 20, 2026. “Gruesome Final Moments of Hollywood Legend and Child Star Decapitated in On‑Set Horror”; Irish Mirror; 23 May 2019; https://www.irishmirror.ie/news/world-news/gruesome-final-moments-hollywood-legend-36838392; accessed April 20, 2026. “Child Actor Laws in California: Permits, Hours & Earnings”; LegalClarity; https://legalclarity.org/what-are-the-child-actor-laws-in-california; accessed April 20, 2026. Just in time for Opening Day 2026, we are revisiting this beloved baseball comedy from fifty years ago starring Oscar-winners Walter Matthau (The Fortune Cookie, The Odd Couple, The Taking of Pelham 123) and Tatum O'Neal (Paper Moon, Little Darlings) as Coach Buttermaker and aspiring star player Amanda respectively. Of course, their team is the titular Bears which is rag-tag group of mostly inexperienced Southern California kids playing Little League baseball. And this team has one major competitor in their league who not only dominates them but bullies them - that team is the venal Coach Turner played by the late, great Emmy-nominee Vic Morrow who co-starred in many popular TV shows around this time including Combat, Charlie's Angels, and Police Story. The baseball team is filled with characters including Kelly Leak (Oscar-nominee Jackie Earle Haley), Ogilvie (Alfred Lutter III), Tanner (Chris Barnes) and Ahmad (Erin Blunt)....and their acumen on the field or at bat might vary but one thing they have in common is that they ALL want to have fun! :) What results from their first tumultuous season together is baseball, smoking, drinking, profanity, and maybe even....TEAMWORK? When a helicopter crash killed actor Vic Morrow and two children on the set of Twilight Zone: The Movie, the filmmakers called it an unforeseeable accident. An LA County Sheriff's detective saw something else: broken laws, reckless risks, and an A-list director who ignored warnings.
On this edition of Parallax Views, we continue our annual Spooky Season series with a chilling deep dive into one of Hollywood's most infamous real-life tragedies — the Twilight Zone: The Movie helicopter crash. Journalist Steve Chain, author of Fly By Night: The Secret Story of Steven Spielberg, Warner Bros., and the Twilight Zone Deaths, joins the show to uncover the haunting true story that forever changed the film industry. Chain's explosive investigation revisits the 1982 disaster that claimed the lives of actor Vic Morrow and two children on set — and the five-year legal battle that followed. Was it a tragic accident, or was there a cover-up to protect some of Hollywood's most powerful names, including John Landis and Steven Spielberg? Chain pulls back the curtain on the shocking evidence, courtroom drama, and corporate maneuvering behind one of Tinseltown's darkest chapters. As part of Parallax Views' spooky season lineup, this episode isn't about ghosts or monsters — it's about real-life horror: power, negligence, and the human cost of spectacle. If you're fascinated by true crime, Hollywood scandals, media history, or the eerie intersection of fame and tragedy, you won't want to miss this one.

Morrow could not help but feel uneasy as he watched the Huey helicopter approach the village for a final rehearsal. We love our automobiles here in America. We love driving cars and fixing up cars… but not every experience on the open road is a good one. This week I'm recommending four road trip films that turn out to be bad trips. Duel (1971)David Mann is just trying to make his way through a lone desert highway when he begins being tormented by an 18-wheeler for no apparent reason. Despite Mann's attempts to outrun, outmaneuver, and outsmart his pursuer, he is unable to get away. If Duel sounds a little like Jaws but with cars, that's no coincidence as Duel was the directorial debut of Steven Spielberg. Non-stop tension from beginning to the exciting climax.Motorama (1991)Ten-year-old Gus hits the road after stealing his parents' Mustang with hopes of winning Motorama. Collect all eight winning cards for a chance of winning $500 million dollars! Unfortunately for Gus, things aren't easy in this hellish nightmare wasteland. By the time Gus makes it to the Motorama headquarters he's lost an eye and his hair has turned gray… and things are about to get worse.Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry (1974)Driver Larry and his mechanic Deke plan to fund their new racing team by robbing a local supermarket and laying low until the heat blows over — an escape plan that falls apart when Larry's former one-night stand Mary is hiding in the getaway car. The film turns into a long police chase and getting there is half the fun! Starring Peter Fonda and Vic Morrow.Palmer's Pick-up (1999)Palmer and Pearl, owners of a cargo shipping company, are hired to transport a large crate from California to Florida. The crate must be delivered to the Devil's Triangle prior to the stroke of midnight on Y2K, else something bad will happen. What the two don't know is if they do make it on time, something much worse may happen. Starring Robert Carradine, Morton Downey, Jr., a dozen unexpected cameos, and one of the highest death counts in any movie I've ever seen. What an ending! This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit www.videostorepodcast.com
John Evans was one of Howard Browne's many pseudonyms Even during his lifetime, Howard Browne (1908-1999) was not well known outside of his given fields. His novels, including his best detective fiction, were written under pseudonyms, and his work as editor and Hollywood writer, through credited, remained mostly unknown, except by those in the business. During his long lifetime Browne published hundreds of stories in science fiction and detective magazines, along with several novels. He wrote dozens of television shows including Mission Impossible, Run for Your Life, Maverick and Cheyenne, and three of his film scripts were produced: Portrait of a Mobster with Vic Morrow; The St. Valentine's Day Massacre with Jason Robards and George Segal; and Capone, starring Ben Gazzara. He also wrote radio scripts in the late 1940s. His day job, before he went to Hollywood, was as an associate editor under Ray Palmer and then editor for Ziff-Davis pulp magazines, which included Amazing Stories, Fantastic Adventures and other lesser known fiction magazines. Richard A. Lupoff interviewed Howard Browne at Browne's home in Southern California some time in the mid 1980s (the cassettes aren't labeled). This was Browne's only radio interview, and only the second extant interview on record (the other appeared in Locus Magazine). After he retired, Howard Browne taught a couple of college classes and worked on a big Chicago novel that never saw publication. Most of his work is out of print today, though his four noir novels, in the style of Raymond Chandler and featuring a detective named Paul Pine, are available in a small press edition published this past spring by Haffner Press, with an introduction by Richard A. Lupoff. If you go to Imdb, you'll find a long list of his television shows, many of which can be found streaming. Curiously, his novel Thin Air formed the basis for his first television credit, on the show Climax in 1955, and his last, for an episode of Simon and Simon in 1982. Thin Air was also the basis for an episode on yet a third program, The Rockford Files. Two minor points: Browne says he never wrote for Hawaiian Eye, yet IMDb claims he wrote an episode, and he says he retired in 1973 but his credits extend to 1975. Four directors remake several classic Twilight Zone episodes, as well adding as their own material. Does it work? Do anthology films work? Can this movie escape the tragedy that occured during production? Is this a movie, or just tv on a big screen? Starring Dan Ackroyd, Albert Brooks, Vic Morrow, Scatman Crothers, Kathleen Quinlan, and John Lithgow. Oh, and Dick Miller. Directed by John Landis, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, and George Miller. Written by John Landis, Richard Matheson, Melissa Mathison, George Clayton Johnson, Jerome Bixby, and Rod Serling.
Send us a textWas there ever an era in cinema history when the obsession with cars, speed, and outrunning the law—whether you were a hick, a hippie, or a world-weary urbanite—captured the public's imagination more than in the early 1970s?That's what we aim to ponder on this, our 106th episode of the Triple FFF as we discuss not one, not 2 but THREE POWERHOUSE mainstream movies of muscle-car mayhem starting with 1971's Vanishing Point directed by Richard C. Sarafian and starring Barry Newman, Dean Jagger, Paul Koslo, Severn Darden, Anthony James, John Amos and Cleavon Little followed by 1974's Gone in 60 Seconds directed and starring the great HB Halicki, his brother Ronald, Jerry Daugirda and Marion Busia. And topped off with Dirty Mary Crazy Larry also released in '74 directed by John Hough and starring Peter Fonda, Susan George, Adam Roarke, Roddy McDowell and Vic Morrow. My guests this week are car and driving averse bookworm Roseanne Caputi, and the actor photographer and funnyman who heavily encouraged this topic of road burning revelry, a man who spent his formative years at the local theater in Ketchikan Alaska with a dazed smile on his face while his chin and his elbows rested on the seat in front him, whether there was someone seated in front of him or not, Gordon Alex Robertson. Before we cue the getaway banjo music and yell, “Kiss my Grits!” the synopses: Vanishing Point: Kowalski, a Nam vet and former cop turned delivery driver, is tasked with transporting a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T from Colorado to San Francisco in record time. As he speeds across the desert, he becomes a symbol of freedom and defiance, pursued by a relentless law enforcement apparatus. Gone in 60 Seconds (1974): Maindrian Pace, an insurance adjuster and skilled car thief, is tasked with stealing fifty cars in a single night for a dangerous crime syndicate. As the clock ticks down, Pace races against time and evades the law against every possible odd to complete his impressive score. Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry: After pulling off a daring yet disturbing home invasion and supermarket safe heist, two over the hill race car drivers, Larry and Deke, hit the California highways while on the run from the law. They run into a setback when they are joined by Mary, a feisty and free spirited former one night stand of Larry's. The oddball trio then speed through the CA Delta backroads pursued by the shrewd and determined Captain Everett Franklin. Which film laps the others in the Grand Prix and stands as an indelible classic? Or do all three win the Championship? Find out! Watch the video podcast on Youtube: https://youtu.be/nSQrMM2TnsQ

Hello all you Ed-Heads. No Tim Yobo this week, thee was an ass farming convention upstate that he had to attend. Our thoughts and prayers are with him. Instead, in his stead we are joined by the newly minted third chair of the show Matt Anderson to talk about the 1999 sleeper horror comedy Lake Placid. An all star ensemble of character actors. Which to me are the best actors. Aren't they all supposed to be characters? huh. Anyhow, if you want to see betty white lure a blindfolded cow into a lake, and call people rooster suckers. This is your episode. (note from Matt, I acknowledge my mistake in thinking that Bridget Fonda was Vic Morrow's daughter when it was actually Jennifer Jason Leigh? In this week's BONUS Hasty History episode, we will be discussing the tragic deaths of adult actor Vic Morrow and two children Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen (as well as the injuries of six others). This tragedy occurred as a result of an accident that happened in 1982 on the set of Twilight Zone: The Movie. You see, on July 23rd of that year, director John Landis told the operator of a helicopter that was being used on set to hover dangerously low over the ground in order to capture a particular scene. This, amongst other violations, caused the helicopter to get caught in the pyrotechnic explosions, leading to the horrific deaths of Morrow, Le, and Chen. What's possibly worse is that, of those on set that night watching the horrendous tragedy occur, were the parents of both of the children. This awful incident would lead to Landis becoming the first ever film director to be charged with a death on the set of a feature film. For nearly a decade after the incident, a slew of civil and criminal actions against those involved would take place…which would eventually lead to a very unsatisfying and disappointing end. A photo shoot in a dry Nevada lakebed went horribly wrong when the wing of an airplane hit the model in the head. Miles O'Brien, Todd Curtis, and John Goglia discuss the June 2023 accident that involved an Aviate Husky plane. The pilot, photographer and his wife, who was the model for the photo session, met early on the morning of the accident. On the fly, they planned a complex photo session involving the aircraft flying close to the model. The pilot misjudged his approach and the wingtip of the aircraft struck the back of model's head and caused a serious injury. John compares this event to the 1982 fatal accident where actor Vic Morrow and two child actors were killed in a helicopter crash on the set of the Twilight Zone movie. Todd shares the pilot's prior experience with similar photo sessions, and compares his approach to the much more structured approach that occurs in professional film and television productions.Miles and John share personal experiences with risky decision making. For Miles, it was his decision to continue flying with low fuel and landing with little left in his tanks. For John, he recalled a flight over the Atlantic where he had concerns that aircraft would not make it to land, and how he had a sudden interest in the operation of the life raft! Today on the first part of a two part episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are speaking to Radames Pera whose name you might know as well as that of his mother actor Lisa Pera. Because this episode is so jam packed – and we honestly didn't even get to half of the stuff we wanted to talk about- so we split this episode into two parts. On this episode, we discuss Radames' being a child actor in not one but two of the 70s most beloved television series. He is best known as young Caine or Grasshopper, if you like, in the series Kung Fu, a show that not only launched the martial arts craze but also a film that launched a global phenomenon that still resonates to this day. Radames also starred in Little House on the Prairie in a recurring role as John Jr. Lisa Pera on the other hand, got her start in film and television as well, beginning in 1965 on the show Combat! in an episode directed by Vic Morrow. From there, she starred in films like The Hindenburg as well as shows like Perry Mason, Get Smart Man from Atlantis and even Hawaii 5-0 where she starred with Radames as his mother. Novel casting, that. Radames pulls no punches (no pun intended) on this episode as we explore his life being raised by a mother too young and emotionally unequipped to deal with raising a child after a horrific childhood of her own. Being a Ukrainian -Russian finding herself in Nazi Germany and eventually the United States after WWII is jaw dropping stuff that doesn't seem real. Suffices to say, this Part one is a ‘buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy ride' episode. But it's frankly just a palette cleanser for episode #2, coming next week. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

S2E10 - The Music Business w/ All Night Long (1962) & King Creole (1958) Independent filmmaker Floyd Webb joins us once again for a pair of classic near-noirs that show that the music business was scammy and sleazy long before Spotify, but it was maybe a little cooler when you had Walter Matthau in a smoke-filled backroom plotting how to screw the talent. First, we've got Charles Mingus on bass, Dave Brubeck on keys and Patrick McGoohan from THE PRISONER (!) on drums--and he's really playing those drums--in ALL NIGHT LONG (1962), a jazzified retelling of Shakespeare's Othello from British director Basil Dearden. This movie's got jazz cigarettes, reefer madness, awesome mid-century modern set design and some amazing musical performances from Mingus, Brubeck, Tubby Hayes and John Dankworth. Then, our ELVIS EPISODE was unexpectedly the third most popular installment of OMFYS in June, so the King is back in KING CREOLE (1958), a musical New Orleans noir from the braintrust that brought us CASABLANCA--producer Hal Wallis and director Michael Curtiz. Joining Elvis are Walter Matthau as ruthless gangster Maxie Fields, Dean Jagger as Elvis' feckless father, film noir regular Paul Stewart as Maxie's rival, Vic Morrow as a street thug, future nun Dolores Hart as the good girl, and Morticia Addams herself Carloyn Jones as the hard-luck dame who hopes Elvis can help her go straight. All this plus some of the best songs of any Elvis movie. Floyd discusses his upcoming martial arts documentary, THE SEARCH FOR COUNT DANTE, that he's been working on for way too long now + some awesome screenings in Chicago that he has coming up. Find out more about Floyd and what he's got going on at https://floydwebb.com/ https://thesearchforcountdante.com Also featuring THE STRIKE TOK REPORT with PHILENA FRANKLIN, a rundown of reactions to the SAG AFTRA and WGA strikes on TikTok. Co-hosts: Bob Calhoun & Cory Sklar Greg Franklin is on assignment. Philena Franklin is on strike but will return for our public domain Halloween ep. ALL NIGHT LONG (1962) is currently streaming on Criterion Channel as part of their excellent British Noir series and it's also available for free with commercials on Tubi. KING CREOLE (1958) is part of Criterion Channel's Elvis series and it's available with ads on Pluto. FLY BY NIGHT is about the helicopter crash on the set of "Twilight Zone: The Movie" – the Warner Bros. film co-produced by Steven Spielberg and John Landis – that killed actor Vic Morrow, and two children who had been hired illegally.Confidential sources in the studios and in the private worlds of Spielberg and Landis – and in the DA's office, the sheriff's office, Interpol and the FBI – and newly uncovered internal Warner Bros. documents – let the author show the cover-up that ensued, a $5-million-dollar scheme to keep Landis out of jail and Spielberg out of the headlines, resulting in an unbelievable acquittal by a jury that had fallen under the spell of Hollywood. From John Huston, Jackie Cooper, Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche to Chevy Chase, George Lucas, Dan Aykroyd and Carrie Fisher, both old and new Hollywood found themselves party to this unprecedented event.
In 1982 John Landis was hired to direct a segment of the Twilight Zone movie being produced by Steven Spielberg. Unfortunately, after a series of bad -and illegal- decisions, actor Vic Morrow and two small children died from a helicopter crash. The accident was completely preventable, and ultimately no one was held accountable.Webcrawlerspod@gmail.com626-604-6262Discord / Twitter / Instagram / Patreon / MerchSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/webcrawlers.
