Esperanza and Irwin welcome Bess Rattray, who needs no introduction. The Rattray family has owned and published The East Hampton Star for generations, and Bess' own column, the beloved Shipwrecked Rose, shows a quirkier side of the East End, often autobiographical. Bess tells us what growing up in the family business was like, particularly a newspaper, where the story lines often involved your friends and neighbors in a small town. Bess tells us of the Anchor Society, and their mission to bring a General Store to East Hampton, to meet the every day needs of the community.

Jim, a brooding, self-absorbed hobo is traveling the country, obsessed with the belief that his father is the famous (and dead?) rock legend Jim Morrison. Sorrie is an intelligent, but non-streetwise teenage girl who is fleeing her controlling and abusive parents. The pair meet and in a cross-country odyssey overcome obstacles before them, and with one another, in "Travels with Jim," the debut novel by Jill Evans. Evans joins host Tory Gates to discuss the conditions that brought Jim and Sorrie about, and also her own upbringing and life, which played a part in this unique work. With roots firmly in Long Island, New York and Northeast Pennsylvania, Evans discusses her Polish and Italian backgrounds, the interactions with her family and the examples set for her as she pursued her own work. Jill Evans earned a bachelor's degree from Stony Brook University and an MFA with a concentration in writing from Lindenwood University. Her articles have appeared in publications that include Newsday and the East Hampton Star. She also teaches memoir and creative writing at Suffolk County Community College on Long Island.

Halt The Highway, 1972: The Bypass That Never Happened

Esperanza and Irwin go back 50 years to what may have been the brouhaha of the century on eastern Long Island. The proposed Highway Bypass was to go north of Route 27 through North Sea, Watermill, Bridgehampton, Sagaponack, Wainscott, East Hampton and ultimately ending in eastern Amagansett. "Build it and they shall come", was one perspective, saying traffic will be even worse. Farmland would be decimated. In a 1974 letter to the East Hampton Star, Tom Twomey, the Chair of the Halt The Highway committee claimed "the super highway will make our Town a bedroom community for migrants from Western Suffolk. They will skyrocket our taxes and make possible new giant shopping centers". But a 1974 Star editorial made the point that we can't turn back the clock, the people were already there garnered support from residents wanting the summer traffic eased. Hindsight is always 20/20. The writer Tim Ferguson's thought that "The protective impulse of 50 years ago just bought us more trouble today" is a point of view many believe. Let us know what you think after you listen!

The topic of todays episode are the inspections or “The Raids” as Little Edie calls them, from the different Suffolk County Government agencies that could have potentially resulted in an eviction from Grey Gardens for the Edies. My go to person for information on this topic is Grey Gardens historian and devoted fan, Terie Spencer, who joined me here on the podcast in episode two. Terie has been compiling information from the East Hampton Star for years. In addition to what Terie will share with us, I also did research by sourcing archived articles from Newsday, a daily newspaper that serves Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island. This will be a fascinating episode and you are sure to hear captivating information, time lines to ground you with the dates of inspections and renovations and quotes by Little Edie that are true to form, in her one of a kind way. Who wants a high ball as we listen in to this high stakes episode where the Edies were put to the ultimate test? Family ties and marital fortune would become integral elements to help the Edies avoid eviction. Bouvier bonds would help them find a solution to rectifying a multitude of health violations. In the 1970s life wasn't easy for the Edies, but they ultimately proved who they were, strong, steadfast and staunch.

What's news? Nowadays, with a 24/7/365 news cycle from nearly unlimited sources, pretty much anything. But what goes into a small town weekly newspaper?  The answer to that question is a little more nuanced. Add to that the fact that the "East Hampton Star" is not your typical small town newspaper, and David Rattray, Editor and Publisher of "The Star", often has some hard choices to make about what makes it into the paper. And consider that many of his subjects are people he might run into in the grocery store or the post office, this can be a very tricky task. But David's been at it for a while, as his mother had before him, and his father before that, so experience counts when deciding whether to report from "The Springs" or from "Springs", whether a candidate's war record is something he should be totally honest about, or whether the "negative donkey" on Buell Lane should be in the Police Blotter (tune in to find out if that's the paper's most popular feature). As you'll hear in this conversation, David is honest and forthright about making these choices, and living with the results, like 'em or not.

He discusses PBMC's as a “center of excellence” for robotic surgeries and the ways in which the development of a critical care center helped the region before the darkest days of the Covid-19 pandemic. Abra Morawiec, Monday Meditation underwritten by http://www.cynthiadaniels.net/index.html (Monk Music Studios ) Suffolk County bird farmers have been on increasingly high alert since mid-February when a backyard flock infected with a highly pathogenic strain of avian flu sparked major federal response. Two weeks ago, an infection at Spring Farm on the South Fork resulted in a 6,000-bird loss that might have resulted in Dave Schellinger's retirement, according to Christine Sampson'shttps://www.easthamptonstar.com/villages/202242/bird-flu-outbreak-devastates-flock-sag-harbor ( reporting for the East Hampton Star). The outbreak has resulted in birds from all over Long Island, including penguins at the Long Island Aquarium, being kept under increased surveillance to avoid cross-contamination, not to mention any interaction with wild birds that might be infected. North Fork bird farmer Abra Morawiec ofhttps://feistyacres.com/ ( Feisty Acres) shares a number of simple bio-security measures those with backyard flocks can apply to help keep their birds safe, as well as a number of symptoms to watch out for. We return to our conversation with investigative journalist Karl Grossman, picking up his career after the memorable fight against the Fire Island road in the 1960s. For a journalist, what story could top that? Cut to: Shoreham Nuclear Power Station #1. It's the 1970s and the Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO) is building the first of up to eleven proposed nuclear power plants, poised to turn Long Island into a “nuclear park.” After working at the Long Island Press until its demise in 1977, Karl covers the LILCO story through local papers like the Long Island Advance, the Suffolk County News, the Southampton Press and the East Hampton Star. In addition to Karl, the story is also being followed by Murray Barbash and Irving Like. Veterans of the Fire Island fight, Irv and Murray help form the Citizens Committee to Replace LILCO. Karl relates the various tactics they and others used to help thwart the completion of the Shoreham plant and bring about passage of the Long Island Power Act and the formation of the Long Island Power Authority. Karl also shares his thoughts on the current state of journalism, electronic media, and what has and hasn't changed on Long Island.
