314 Day is not just a day; it's a full-blown celebration of everything that makes St. Louis sparkle. It is a week-long extravaganza where the city's unique culture, vibrant businesses, and community spirit take center stage. Our guest, Tatum Polk, one of the masterminds behind this annual festivity, spills the beans on how this grassroots celebration has evolved over the past 19 years. He reminisces about the humble beginnings of 314 Day, where it all started with just him and his buddy Dip rallying the city to embrace its pride during a time of uncertainty. Fast forward almost two decades; 314 Day has blossomed into a globally recognized event that not only highlights local talent but also fosters a sense of community and belonging. We also chat about the exciting lineup of events this year. It's clear that 314 Day is more than just a celebration—it's a movement that brings people together, honors the city's heritage, and builds a brighter future for all its residents. So, grab your friends, family, and a sense of adventure, because 314 Day is here to remind us why we love St. Louis![00:00] Introduction to 314 Day[00:31] Hosts Introduction and Banter[01:45] Sponsor Acknowledgment and Community Message[02:58] Interview with Tatum Polk: Origins of 314 Day[06:00] 314 Day's Growth and Community Impact[09:07] Fun Facts and Local Trivia[11:01] Community Involvement and Future Plans[16:45] Encouraging Participation and Final Thoughts[21:21] Sponsor Messages and Upcoming Events[26:48] JJ Twigs and Old Vienna Collaboration[27:10] Celebrating 314 Day with Local Businesses[28:06] Unique 314 Day Events and Activities[28:21] Challenges in Promoting 314 Day[28:59] 314 Day Themed Menus and Specials[31:58] Library Events and Scavenger Hunts[35:08] Fun Facts and Word of the Day[36:44] National Days and Observances[43:56] Humorous Anecdotes and Jokes[48:45] Conclusion and FarewellTakeaways: 314 Day is all about celebrating the rich culture and community spirit of St. Louis, and it lasts a whole week, not just a day! This year, 314 Day includes a variety of fun events like scavenger hunts and a community cleanup, promoting civic pride and unity. Today, January 20th, marks two very different occasions. This day, January 20th, is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. A day when many people stop their usual work to dedicate themselves to community service and reflect on on all that we as humans share with one another. Today is also the day when Donald Trump will be inaugurated to a second term as President of these United States. And that feels like a bitter combination to us. How can we hold both of these memorials on the same day and move towards civic engagement? BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. - The first ashara of Muḥarram was observed peacefully, except in Muscat, Oman, where extremists attacked Shi‘a mourners, killing and wounding some on the eve of Āshūrā'. - In conflicts between right and wrong, truth is often the first casualty as the unjust party justifies its actions and demonizes victims. - Imam Ḥusayn (a) foresaw the tyrant Yazid's actions and, in a written statement, denied any ulterior motives, stating he rose not out of pride, insolence, or tyranny, but to seek reformation in his community. - The pattern of tyrants blaming victims continues today, exemplified by the Israeli PM's statements to the US Congress about the Gaza conflict, which Ruth Michaelson of the Guardian fact-checked: - Netanyahu's claim about aid trucks to Gaza was contradicted by UN data showing fewer trucks than he stated. - Netanyahu's assertion about civilian safeguarding measures was undermined by ongoing civilian casualties and displacements in Gaza, with the IDF's flyers and messages failing to prevent harm. - Israel dropped 75,000 tonnes of explosives on Gaza, a figure surpassing the bombs dropped on London during 1940-1941. - Historical cycles show that tyrants eventually face consequences, as promised in the Qur'an (Sūrah ash-Shu‘arā', 26:227). - Blaming the victim is not new, as seen in Karbala, with historical figures like Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-‘Arabi denying Yazid's responsibility for Imam Ḥusayn's death. - Saudi Mufti Shk. ‘Abdul ‘Azīz Ãl ash-Shaykh stated that allegiance to Yazid was legitimate and criticized Imam Ḥusayn for withholding allegiance, though he asked for Allah's forgiveness for Husain's actions. Full Text of ReadingsThe Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls) Lectionary: 668The Saint of the day is Commemoration of All the Faithful DepartedThe Story of the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed The Church has encouraged prayer for the dead from the earliest times as an act of Christian charity. “If we had no care for the dead,” Augustine noted, “we would not be in the habit of praying for them.” Yet pre-Christian rites for the deceased retained such a strong hold on the superstitious imagination that a liturgical commemoration was not observed until the early Middle Ages, when monastic communities began to mark an annual day of prayer for the departed members. In the middle of the 11th century, Saint Odilo, abbot of Cluny, France, decreed that all Cluniac monasteries offer special prayers and sing the Office for the Dead on November 2, the day after the feast of All Saints. The custom spread from Cluny and was finally adopted throughout the Roman Church. The theological underpinning of the feast is the acknowledgment of human frailty. Since few people achieve perfection in this life but, rather, go to the grave still scarred with traces of sinfulness, some period of purification seems necessary before a soul comes face-to-face with God. The Council of Trent affirmed this purgatory state and insisted that the prayers of the living can speed the process of purification. Superstition easily clung to the observance. Medieval popular belief held that the souls in purgatory could appear on this day in the form of witches, toads or will-o'-the-wisps. Graveside food offerings supposedly eased the rest of the dead. Observances of a more religious nature have survived. These include public processions or private visits to cemeteries and decorating graves with flowers and lights. This feast is observed with great fervor in Mexico. Reflection Whether or not one should pray for the dead is one of the great arguments which divide Christians. Appalled by the abuse of indulgences in the Church of his day, Martin Luther rejected the concept of purgatory. Yet prayer for a loved one is, for the believer, a way of erasing any distance, even death. In prayer we stand in God's presence in the company of someone we love, even if that person has gone before us into death. Read this friar’s reflection on death and dying. Observances are great because they bring light to and attention on important issues and people. But that doesn't mean we just move on and forget just how important something is. The month of May may be over but that does not mean we stop experiencing, caring about and talking about mental health. Northeast PA had the pleasure of talking about and working to stop the stigma around mental health while also touting the power of humor to help us heal through a series of wonderful events with NAMI Northeast Region PA, Laugh to Live and Gab Bonesso! On this week's episode, Gab talks about the connection she felt with Scranton during her visit and the fond memories she created. She also talks about staying humble --thanks in part to a group of tired high schoolers at Prom--joining the ranks of race runners, and breaking the mold of comedy and so much more with her newly recorded album that has its highs and lows (like her life with bipolar disorder) with both comedic material and serious originally-composed songs. As always, it's an easy and fun conversation with Gab! If you live in the Philadelphia or Williamsport area of PA, check out Gab's upcoming events at her site.
