This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Ichha SharmaToday is the 2th of March and here are the headlines.Kunal Kamra, in a standup show, had taken a jibe at Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde referring to him as a “gaddar” (traitor) following which an FIR for defamation was registered against the comedian on Monday. Shiv Sena workers had vandalised the Habitat studio where the standup show was shot, with 12 of them being arrested and later released on bail. Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairman Ram Shinde on Thursday said that the breach of privilege motion filed against stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has been accepted and sent to the privilege committee of the legislative council. The Assam police arrested journalist Dilwar Hussain Mozumdar on Tuesday night after detaining him for several hours following his coverage of a protest against the Assam Co-operative Apex Bank (ACAB). Hussain is a reporter with the Assam-based digital media portal The CrossCurrent, known for its investigative reportage on the state government. He is also the assistant general secretary of the Guwahati Press Club. The grounds for his arrest, which were presented to his family hours after he was detained, state that he was arrested for alleged criminal intimidation and violation of provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for “offensive remarks” against the complainant.Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy moved a resolution against delimitation in the legislative assembly on Thursday. The resolution read, quote “The house expresses its deep concern on the manner in which the impending delimitation exercise is being planned, without transparent consultations with stakeholders.” unquote. The resolution was later adopted by the House and passed. Reddy posted about it on X stating:quote “…People of Telangana and citizens of all other states of south India are united in protecting our rights” unquote.US President Donald Trump has decided to expand his trade war to the world's most traded product — automobiles and auto parts — by announcing 25 per cent tariffs on them from April 3. This has raised the uncertainty over Indian exports of auto components worth nearly $7 billion to the US and their future growth potential in the North American market. Citing national security concerns, the White House said that automobiles would be subject to 25 per cent tariffs starting on April 3 — a day after US reciprocal tariffs are set to come into effect — while auto parts would face similar tariffs “no later than May 3 2025,” unless such actions are expressly “reduced, modified, or terminated.”South Korea's government has been held responsible for multiple human rights violations for fabricating birth records, falsely reporting that children had been abandoned over decades for a programme which sent about 200,000 children and babies abroad for adoption, a landmark enquiry by the truth commission has found. Private agencies were able to export babies and children due to government's lack of oversight and the agencies were driven by profit which enabled the “mass exportation of children” and numerous examples of coercion, false records and fraud have been found in the scheme. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by the Indian Express.

This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Ichha Sharma.Today is the 6th of December and here are this week's headlines.BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis took oath as the chief minister of Maharashtra on 5th of December along with two deputy chief ministers, Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde and NCP's Ajit Pawar, at a grand event held at Azad Maidan in Mumbai.  The formation of the new government comes after two weeks of intense negotiations among the Mahayuti allies following the 23rd November poll results. The swearing-in ceremony took place in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union ministers, and several chief ministers.Meanwhile, India experienced its second warmest November in 123 years and this warming trend has continued since the post-monsoon season in October, and could contribute to making 2024 the warmest year ever on record, globally. According to meteorologists, there were two main reasons for the above normal temperatures in India, first the lack of strong western disturbances affecting the plains of northwest India, and second lack of cyclonic disturbances or low pressure systems — both of which kept the rainfall activity at its lowest across the country. As allegations emerge against its director of “favouritism”, “vindictiveness in faculty selection”, and failure to build a hospital on campus, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, has responded by issuing show cause notices to as many as 85 faculty members, deepening the rift between the administration and teachers. The institute has also issued orders replacing three heads of departments, who were signatories to a mass petition. The conflict began in September, when the IIT Teachers' Association wrote to the Union Education Ministry, accusing the institute of arbitrary recruitment and other irregularities under the tenure of its current director V K Tewari. The Trinamool Congress asked the Centre to appeal to the United Nations to send a peacekeeping force to Bangladesh on Tuesday where according to the party “the minorities and the Hindus are being tortured and being killed”. The party's appeal in the Lok Sabha came a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a similar request in the state Assembly. Speaking during the Zero Hour, party MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay sought a statement in the House by Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar about the latest situation in Bangladesh. He added that the West Bengal government had adopted a resolution that it would work together with the Centre on the matter and stand by its decisions. On the global front, France Prime Minister Michel Barnier's government has collapsed amid a no-confidence vote in the National Assembly and he has been forced to resign after three months into his term, sending the country into a political crisis. Like the former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal was asked to continue as the caretaker government, when President Macron dissolved the National Assembly following his party's crushing defeat in the EU elections, PM Michel Barnier will also remain in power as a caretaker administrator. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

Decoding the Maharashtra poll verdict: What changed between June and November 2024?

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra, the Maha Vikas Agadi (MVA) won 30 out of the 48 seats, while the Maha Yuti could get only 17 seats. But in the just concluded Assembly elections, the Maha Yuti won a landslide, with 235 out of the 288 seats. The Maha Yuti alliance's main constituent, the BJP alone won 132 seats, with the other two, the (Ajit Pawar-led) NCP and the (Eknath Shinde-led) Shiv Sena garnering 41 and 57 seats respectively. None of the MVA parties could win enough seats to even qualify for the position of leader of the Opposition – the first time this has happened in six decades. The Shiva Sena (Uddhav Bal Thackeray) got 20 seats, the Congress won 16, and the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) won 10 seats respectively. So, what changed so dramatically in a matter of five months – from June to November 2024 -- that the Maha Yuti swept the state? How serious are the MVA's complaints that question a post-5pm voter surge and the data mismatches between votes polled and counted? Guest: Vinaya Deshpande, The Hindu's Maharashtra Chief of Bureau. Host: G. Sampath, Social Affairs Editor, The Hindu. Edited by Jude Francis Weston

This week, Newslaundry's Abhinandan Sekhri, Raman Kirpal, Jayashree Arunachalam and Prateek Goyal are joined by journalist Faye D'Souza. On the polls in Maharashtra, Faye says there is “a lot of goodwill” for the Thackerays. “Eknath Shinde does not enjoy that goodwill because of what was done to the Thackerays.” She adds that there was confusion about election symbols because of the split within the NCP and the Shiv Sena. “A lot of voters did not know the difference between their symbols.”The panel then discusses the elections in Delhi and the alleged Swati Maliwal assault case. Raman breaks down the arithmetic of Delhi polls. “In 2019, the BJP's margin of victory was 25 percent and above.” Abhinandan says that the coming together of the AAP and the Congress is “statistically not enough” to defeat the BJP in the national capital. On the Porsche car crash incident in Pune, Jayashree says the story is getting traction because it “appeals very much to India's upper middle class sensibilities”. Talking about the bail granted to the accused, she adds that all said and done, “we should not lose sight of the fact that any juvenile should get bail”.This and a whole lot more. This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 2nd of February and and here are the top stories of this week.Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented her sixth Budget on Thursday. This was an ‘interim Budget' since the term of the current government will end soon and the country will go to polls. She began her Budget speech with references to the Union government's schemes in the social sectors. No changes were announced in direct or indirect tax rates, unlike in the 2019-20 interim Budget. Fiscal Deficit came in at 5.8% — a tad lower than the target of 5.9%. Fiscal Deficit target for next financial year is set at 5.1%.Jharkhand Governor C P Radhakrishnan met five legislators of the ruling JMM-Congress alliance on Thursday, a day after JMM leader and Hemant Soren loyalist Champai Soren staked claim to form the government in the state. Hemant Soren had submitted his resignation to the governor on Wednesday night, moments before his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate. While the JMM-Congress alliance had immediately proposed appointing Champai as the leader of the legislature party, the Governor had told them that he would revert after considering all legalities.Opposition leaders in Maharashtra slammed the state government and civic authorities on Wednesday, after The Indian Express published an investigation report that revealed how over the past year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation disbursed funds amounting to Rs 500 crore only to MLAs from the ruling BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena alliance. Demanding an inquiry, the opposition parties asked whether the government considers public funds as its exclusive property. The Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday barred Paytm Payments Bank from offering all its core services — including accounts and wallets — from March, effectively crippling the company's business. The action is technically not a cancellation of the licence of Paytm Payments Bank, but it constricts the company's operations to a very large extent. The RBI has allowed the withdrawal or utilisation of balance amounts by customers “without any restrictions, up to their available balance”.Congress leader Rahul Gandhi restarted the yatra from West Bengal's Malda on Thursday and entered Murshidabad in the afternoon. The back window of Rahul's car broke on Wednesday, as thousands of people thronged Labha Bridge to see the Yatra enter the state. The Congress cried foul and initially claimed that "anti-socials" had pelted stones at Rahul's vehicle. However, the party later clarified that the window pane was damaged when sudden brakes had to be applied as a woman came in front of the vehicle. Rahul's Yatra is set to enter Uttar Pradesh from Chandauli on 14th of Feb.This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.
