In the first episode of the 5th season, I wanted to focus on my journey: owning and running a successful beauty, history, and design-driven brand; being an expectant first-time mother; and navigating life's ups and downs. This is a side of myself I don't always share, but I wanted to open up this more personal and vulnerable aspect, in the hopes that it might touch you too, and make you feel like you're not alone in this. That's whether "this" is work, motherhood, or just trying to be happy and fulfilled. My good friend, Erika Geraerts—entrepreneur, creative, and CEO of the cosmetics company fluff—joins me for a more personal discussion about our shared paths. We are close personal friends and share a business philosophy centred on sustainability and practical, beautiful designs. You've heard us talk business on the Pod before, but today Eri's insights and thoughtful questions lead to deep personal discussions and revelations. I also answer questions from you, our listeners. – Shop Latest Discover Bespoke This episode was live-recorded Wurundjeri country. On today's show we chat to Erika Geraerts - a three time business founder and beauty industry powerhouse. Erika co-founded the Melbourne-based content agency Willow & Blake in 2010, co-directing the company for five years. In 2013, she co-founded frank body, with a coffee scrub that revolutionised shower routines all over the world. Three years later, Erika left both Willow & Blake as well as frank body - and since then, she's been the director of her very own beauty company called Fluff - a refillable, vegan, and cruelty-free cosmetics brand - which carries the message that it's okay to feel more with makeup, so long as you don't feel less without it. Fluff operates as a drop model - where you can only shop for the products periodically - or every time there is a ‘drop' - making them unavailable for purchase outside of these intervals. You see drop models a lot with fashion brands, so tune in to hear Erika discussing how this works with beauty products. Erika has seen a lot in the world of business, and more than a decade in the world of beauty in particular. She's built and exited businesses, dealt with raising money to start new ones, toyed around with supply chains and business models, and in all of this - has written extensively about the overlap of business and personal life. – Erika is currently reading Good to Great by James Collins and is dipping her toes into the Beckham docu-series on Netflix. She's also listening to The Rich Roll Podcast and specifically recommends the episode titled: Pixar Co-Founder Ed Catmull On The Art & Science Of Creativity, How To Do Your Best Work, Bring Out The Best In Others & Lead – Find Erika on LinkedIn as Erika Geraerts and on Instagram as @erikageraerts Find Fluff here: https://www.itsallfluff.com/ where DROP #6 is now officially LIVE! – Wanting more? Don't miss this opportunity to understand the journey from launch to legacy, and to learn about the business of building brands that truly matter. This episode was live-recorded Wurundjeri country. We don't talk a lot about The Business World on this podcast, but after reading Erika's blog posts about building her brand, I just knew I had to interview her!! Here's an excerpt: "I was involved two businesses/brands that grew quickly and warped my idea of reality when it came to status, wealth, success, and values. 5 years in, I chose to leave a brand that just announced a 100 million dollar valuation, and start again. I too, sometimes wonder if I'm crazy."The questions we answer on this episode: I'd love to hear about your business journey - from leaving your previous startup to creating your own brand, FluffWatching you from the outside, I see you as following your own path in life; it's like you just want to live your most authentic life. Am I reading that right? You run a very values-driven business, and you've written about how tough it can be in a world driven by profits. Why was it important for you to do this? What are the pros and cons of doing this? We've both been in the beauty industry for a little while, but your approach to beauty at Fluff is quite unique. Can you tell me about Fluff's approach to beauty? You've written that you're not where your friends are (marriage, babies, houses). I'm not either! How do you feel about that? Has your definition of "success" changed with age?And what's next for you in life and business? The beauty industry is one that is large and influential but also often damaging to not only our self esteem but the health of our planet. This episode's guest Erika Geraerts, is disrupting the beauty industry with her casual cosmetics brand Fluff. Erika pulled her experience co-founding content agency Willow & Blake and beauty brand frank body to introduce Fluff as a way to challenge many of the beliefs held by cosmetics consumers. In our conversation we talk about how Fluff centers customers in their decisions, why and how Fluff is developing more responsible practices and how Fluff is planning to operate more sustainably in the future. Our conversation was so inspiring and I appreciate being able to share a brand working towards a better future. If you're interested in hearing about starting a movement and not just a product and disrupting industries sustainably then this episode is for you.Show notes: https://www.tylalockwood.com/podcast/15See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"Beauty is so much more than make-up", says Erika Geraerts, Founder of Australian brand Fluff Casual Cosmetics, and my guest and fellow biz buddy on this episode. With this sentiment in mind and for the second time in a decade (she also co-founded the hugely successful beauty brand, Frank Body), Erika has truly disrupted an industry that has previously mostly told us that we need to wear stacks of make-up or follow a rigorous, multi-product, multi-step beauty routine in order to look or feel good about ourselves. But the needle is shifting, dialogues around the relationship between beauty and self-love are evolving and norms are changing (for the better) - Erika and Fluff are no doubt big drivers of this.In this ep, Eri and I talk about:how our relationship with beauty/cosmetics and self-love/self-care is changing (particularly during a time when we're all barely going out, mostly interacting through screens and wearing face-masks!)the challenges associated with being a young female founderthe pressures vs. the realities of 'the start-up dream'the huge shift in starting in business and launching a brand in 2013 vs. 2020how she's using her time in lockdown to write and plan for post iso life!... amongst a HEAP of other things. This week! We’re going through our open tabs and will be discussing the search for Generation Z, Pandora’s new sonic logo, and the importance of morale and motivation as management tools. Helping us bring some outside perspective today is our special guests Erika Geraerts. Erika is an impressive woman. First, she co-founded content agency Willow & Blake, co-directing the company for five years. Then in 2013, she co-founded skincare company frank body, which went on to become an international beauty sensation. In 2016, Erika left Willow & Blake and frank body, and has since been working on her new venture in beauty, Fluff – a brand with a mission to empower and draw inspiration from teenage girls, simplifying beauty products and embracing reality. We’ve mentioned Fluff various times on the podcast because of Erika’s refreshingly transparent approach of sharing the ins and outs of building the business. We are so super delighted to have her here. Remember! We are now an ENHANCED podcast. In this bonus episode of the Glow Journal podcast, I (Gemma Watts, your regular host) am getting candid about the state of the beauty industry. We’re eleven episodes in and, up until this point, I’ve managed to remain as objective as possible and have made a concerted effort not to insert myself into the interviews- however, following last week’s episode with Fluff founder Erika Geraerts, the tables were turned and I found myself on the receiving end of Erika’s question list. I strongly recommend listening to Erika’s episode before delving into this one as not only will it provide some much needed context for this chat, Eri has a LOT of really important things to say. Up until publishing this episode, I wasn’t too sure what I would do with this audio as I’ve never wanted the podcast to become about me- but here it is. In this episode, I chat to Eri about the process I go through when reviewing products as a beauty writer, pretty much everything that I think is wrong with social media, the ethical dilemmas I grapple with daily and the specific message I want people to take from what I publish. In episode eleven of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts sits down with Erika Geraerts, founder of Fluff and one of the original co founders of Frank Body. A few years ago, Erika made the decision to walk away from the 20 million dollar business that she had helped to build. The reason? A wish for a cosmetics company that challenged every parameter previously set in place by the beauty industry. From there, Fluff was born. Fluff, which Erika describes as a “casual cosmetics company,” in both product and approach, has become something of a movement. Fluff hold events, publish think pieces and pushes the industry to become more transparent. Fluff is more than products, hence the name- Erika wants her young audience to understand that, while makeup is fun, it really is just that- Fluff. This is a fun episode for a number of reasons- firstly, we have a new mic setup so you can pass that on to your friends who were initially put off by the sound quality (sorry), and secondly because Eri is a friend of mine, so this may be the most honest episode of the Glow Journal podcast we’ve produced thus far. In this conversation, Erika explains exactly why she chose to leave Frank, her disengagement with influencer marketing and why businesses, not just beauty brands, need to be held accountable for their messaging. What a way to kick off the year on the Fluke Beauty Podcast channel. I am so excited to share this interview with you with the founder of It’s All Fluff, Erika Geraerts. This brand is approaching beauty in a different way, choosing to be socially responsible with the message they are broadcasting to the…
Wanna know what your audience wants? Matt @mattgottesman talks with Erika Geraerts (founder of Fluff) about being passionate about people, how brands need to engage with their markets today, why there is a big need for marketing in an ethical and sustainable way, interesting findings on Gen Z, learning about beauty, money, social media and consumption for an entire generation and more...
A few years ago, Erika did what some might consider crazy or even unthinkable. She left the business she co-founded with her best friends at the height of its success, to go out on her own. Erika is the co-founder of Frank Body – the $20 million brand that’s referenced as one of the best Aussie start-up successes in recent years. It was courageous decision, but one that was driven by Erika’s mission to fight back against the unrealistic portrayal of women by the beauty industry, and her desire to create a positive narrative around what it means to be beautiful. After selling all of her shares in frank and raising additional seed funding on just her idea, Erika started building her next venture, Fluff. It’s a beauty brand for the Gen Z-ers and while it’s novel, it can be polarising and at times confusing for anyone over the age of 20. It’s not like any beauty brand you’ve seen before, and that’s precisely the point. Today’s episode is the story of leaving a business at its peak to build another one from the ground up.
Frank Body co-founder Erika Geraerts left her $20 million coffee scrub company to invent a new category within the beauty industry. She's now on a mission to empower young girls everywhere to feel more comfortable with themselves. According to this forward-thinking founder, the world has enough makeup products, and what the industry really needs is better products with better brand messages. Geraerts thinks makeup should be fun, not a necessity or a chore, which is one reason she called her company Fluff. But there's nothing frivolous about her approach to business. Geraerts is filling a void in the cosmetics industry and raising up the self-esteem of women globally in the process. In this compelling video interview, Geraerts reveals why she decided to leave her booming skin care company, and what she sees on the horizon for Fluff. She also talks about her strict manufacturing process, her focus on sustainable products, her unique customer development process, and the distinct way the company creates online content. Key Takeaways How Geraerts chooses manufacturers to create her products The company’s unique customer development process for finding out what types of products solve her customers’ problems Why she won’t be focusing on traditional influencer marketing to promote her products Fluff’s unique website launch strategy and how they work with their customers and freelancers to curate all of their content
In episode five of Beauty Island, host Brittany Stewart sits down with Erika Geraerts. You might not know her name, but you definitely know what she’s done. Erika was one of the founders of Frank Body, the coffee scrub beauty brand that’s gone on to revolutionise the beauty space and make millions in the process. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. At just 29, Erika has done more than most people do in a lifetime - including founding a content agency, writing a children’s book, opening a cafe, and launching two unique and successful beauty brands, including her latest baby, Fluff. It’s unlike anything else you’ll find in the beauty world - and no, not a speck of millennial pink in sight.Erika welcomed me into the very cool Fluff showroom-cum-office in Melbourne. We talked about her career, forging your own path, the logistics of launching a business, the definition of success, and the problems with the beauty industry as it currently is. We also talked about her decision to leave Frank and launch Fluff, why it’s so different, why she ditched millenials for centennials (that's 16-22 year olds) as her ideal customer, her tattoos and much more. I hope you find our chat as fascinating as I did.
