Ben Lorber and Shane Burley, co-authors of Safety Through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antisemitism, join me to discuss the absolutely timely moment and context this book is being published in. They raise the need for, and the strong historical legacies of, Jewish anti-Zionist solidarity with pro-Palestine movements, while articulating and bringing forward critical analysis of the shape, character, and histories of antisemitism in primarily Western Christian societies. With antisemitism and Islamophobia on the rise, Shane and Ben articulate a vision and present a radical guide to fight antisemitism and build safety through solidarity for Jewish and non-Jewish peoples and communities alike. Ben Lorber is a researcher, journalist and movement strategist. He works at Political Research Associates, a social movement think tank, as a Senior Research Analyst focusing on antisemitism and white nationalism. Lorber's work has appeared in The Nation, Salon, Jewish Daily Forward, Religion Dispatches and more, and a range of outlets including The Washington Post and Huffington Post turn to him regularly for quotations on antisemitism and the Right. Shane Burley is an author and filmmaker based in Portland, Oregon. He is the author of Why We Fight: Essays on Fascism, Resistance, and Surviving the Apocalypse (AK Press, 2017) and Fascism Today: What It Is and How to End It (AK Press, 2021), and the editor of No Pasaran: Antifascist Dispatches from a World in Crisis (AK Press, 2022). In episode 2082, James Kirchick suggested that being Jewish and being a Zionist should be of all of one thing. Shane Burley reverses this. The co-author of Safety Through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Antisemitism, the Portland based, religiously orthodox Burley suggests that being Jewish might actually mean questioning not just Netanyahu, but the very intellectual foundations of the Zionist project. This division between nationalist and internationalist Jews isn't new, of course. But in a world where both antisemites and philosemites equate hatred of Israel with hatred of Jews, it's an important reminder that anti Zionism has a long heritage in the radical Jewish community.Shane Burley is a writer and filmmaker based in Portland, Oregon. He is the author of Why We Fight: Essays on Fascism, Resistance, and Surviving the Apocalypse (AK Press, 2021) and Fascism Today: What It Is and How to End It (AK Press, 2017), and the editor of the forthcoming anthology ¡No pasarán!: Antifascist Dispatches from a World in Crisis. On the other, genuine fascism is clearly on the rise, and fascist ideas have found increasing purchase, even mainstream purchase, on the right.Taken together, these two statements mean that not only should we be serious about the work of combating fascism, but we also need to be very clear on what it is, and what it isn't.To help work through these important questions, I'm joined by Shane Burley. This is a segment of episode #270 of Last Born In The Wilderness “Testing Ground: Flash Points On The Road To Autocracy w/ Alexander Reid Ross & Shane Burley.” Listen to the full episode: http://bit.ly/LBWrossburley2 Read Alexander Reid Ross and Shane Burley’s article ‘Portland Is Trump's Testing Ground for Authoritarian Rule’: https://bit.ly/3hXXoia With protests persisting over 100 days at this point, Portland has been a beacon of resistance to police brutality and repression, with anti-racist protestors contending with intermittent violent intimidation from far-right groups, as well the recent intrusions from federal officers from various divisions of the Department of Homeland Security, loyal to President Trump. I ask Shane to explain the conditions journalists covering the protests are working under, highlighting numerous examples of press being actively targeted, arrested, and brutalized by police since protests began. And finally, we address Alexander and Shane’s article published for Haarez in July, ‘Portland Is Trump's Testing Ground for Authoritarian Rule.’ What does this escalation of police violence directed towards protestors and journalists, the dramatic uptick of far-right vigilante violence across the United States, and Trump’s active encouragement of these trends portend for the upcoming presidential election and its inevitable fallout? “If both the federal incursion and their questionable tactics become a precedent, it’s not a long way from Trump disrupting democratic functioning and dissent come November. If Trump wins in November, this militarized federal intervention could escalate; and if he loses, he has prepared the ground for federal officers to intervene if he discounts the results. For now, Portland is the laboratory for a new politics of anti-constitutional state-sponsored violence and the suppression of civil rights. The question is what will happen when Portland ceases to be an extreme outlier and becomes a prelude to wider roll-out of authoritarian rule.” Shane Burley is a journalist based in Portland, Oregon. He is the author of ‘Fascism Today: What It Is and How to End It’ and the upcoming book ‘Why We Fight.’ His work has been featured in NBC News, Jacobin, Al Jazeera, The Baffler, and Truthout. [Intro: 8:06] In this episode, I speak with Alexander Reid Ross, author of 'Against the Fascist Creep', and Shane Burley, author of 'Fascism Today: What It Is and How to End It.' We discuss several important topics, including the historic ongoing wave of protests and uprisings across the United States since May this year, as well as the disturbing uptick of incidences of far-right vigilantism since then. We also examine one of the flash points in these struggles — Portland, Oregon — where Shane and Alexander are based. With protests persisting over 100 days at this point, Portland has been a beacon of resistance to police brutality and repression, with anti-racist protestors contending with intermittent violent intimidation from far-right groups, as well the recent intrusions from federal officers from various divisions of the Department of Homeland Security, loyal to President Trump. The question is what will happen when Portland ceases to be an extreme outlier and becomes a prelude to wider roll-out of authoritarian rule.” (https://bit.ly/3hXXoia) Shane Burley is a journalist based in Portland, Oregon. He is the author of ‘Fascism Today: What It Is and How to End It’ and the upcoming book ‘Why We Fight.’ His work has been featured in NBC News, Jacobin, Al Jazeera, The Baffler, and Truthout. Alexander Reid Ross teaches geography at Portland State University, and is the author of ‘Against the Fascist Creep‘ and the editor of ‘Grabbing Back: Essays Against the Global Land Grab.’ His work has appeared in Truthout, ThinkProgress, The Ecologist, Haaretz, and the Cambridge University Strategic Initiative in Global Food Security. As Shane describes in his recent article published at Waging Nonviolence: “In almost every city around the United States mutual aid networks have started to form — ranging from projects for resource distribution to simple options like fundraising, compiling lists of resources and contacts, and creating “chat threads” so that people in the same area can stay in contact with one another. [Intro: 12:39 | Book Pre-sale: http://bit.ly/ORBITgr] In this episode, I speak with author, journalist, and political researcher Shane Burley. We discuss mutual aid in the time of COVID-19, the "Autumn of the Alt Right," and the underlying structure of conspiracy theories in the age of information. We begin this discussion with Shane describing what mutual aid and solidarity looks like in our time of the coronavirus pandemic, with millions of workers in the United State without jobs as a result of widespread economic disruption and lack of a comprehensive government aid. The speed with which these groups have arrived, and the depth of care that many of them offer, have started to show what options communities have when the large institutions around them fail, or are unwilling to deal with the disaster.” (https://bit.ly/3a5GN89) From there, we move into what he explored in an earlier article he published at Commune Magazine, titled ‘Autumn of the Alt Right.’ I ask him what the state of the Alt Right is currently, in particular what the ultimate failures and successes the far right movement has made in their attempt to shift the political discourse in the U.S. further to the Right. Finally, we end this interview with an examination of the underlying structure of conspiracy theories in the age of information, which is especially relevant in light of the spread of baseless suppositions surrounding the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic, that the pandemic is a “hoax,” and so on. Shane Burley is a writer and filmmaker who regularly reports on far-right movements in the US, as well as anti-fascist resistance, workers rights, and class struggle. (http://bit.ly/2lvaU5r) Ngo is best known for using his prominent social media platform to promote and spin provocative right-wing media narratives, demonstrated in his coverage of street clashes between antifascists and far-right groups over the past several years — most notoriously in Portland, Oregon. His promotion of the concocted narrative that antifascists activists (antifa) are anti-free speech and even terroristic (#antifaterrorists), has had real consequence in the lives and safety of journalists and activists, including Alexander and Shane. (http://bit.ly/2koyQHe) While Ngo is discussed in this episode at some length, Shane and Alexander contextualize the rise of right-wing media figures like Ngo within the wider media environment. Capitalist and centrist liberal values, as embodied by the most prominent media outlets in the country, often consistently fail to provide proper context to a wide range of events, which in turn leaves room for a sort of “fascist creep” to take place in way these events are discussed and presented to the wider public. Without proper investigative research, prominent media outlets fail to do their part in connecting the dots in the rise of white supremacist violence, whether that be in their coverage of the frequency of racially motivated mass shootings in the United States and abroad, the increasingly visible street violence between antifascists and far-right groups, and rising far right populism in nations around the world. There is real danger here in the concocted narratives spun by figures like Ngo: without proper vetting by mainstream journalists in their coverage of these events, disingenuous media personalities with far-right tendencies like Ngo are given a pass and even legitimized, giving space for misinformation surrounding antifascist activism to spread. Alexander and Shane discuss this, and much more, in this episode. Aside from embodying the most vile and insurgent aspects of white supremacist ideological violence, Tarrant live-streamed the mass killing of 50 Muslim worshippers at the Al Noor and Linwood mosques on platforms such as Facebook and YouTube. Along his eagerness to share his violent acts with the world, Tarrant left a "manifesto" of sorts, which clearly defines what his motivations were for the targeted attacks, including the highly dubious claims that the "white race" is being systematically replaced and displaced from their position of dominance in European and European-in-origin societies (United States, Australia, New Zealand, and the like) by "Non-European" races through mass migration and high birthrates. We place this mass shooting in Christchurch within Shane's robust analysis of the patterns of far right insurgent violence, as demonstrated by the long and growing list of so-called ”lone wolf" attacks on minority groups in predominantly European and European-in-origin societies over the past several decades, and especially in the past five years or less. What is fueling these attacks, and how do we combat these horrible ideologies that embolden individuals to "take matters into their own hands"? We examine possible answers to this question by identifying the root of the anxiety inherent in white identity in the modern era, including the role late-stage capitalism and ecological collapse plays in giving rise to these outbursts of violence around the world. Our discussion with Shane covers numerous topics, including the "Intellectual Dark Web" (or as Shane says "the academics that circle around Joe Rogan for some reason"), the pseudoscience of race theory and IQ, and the examination of the patterns within the far right insurgency, as examined in Shane's recent piece in Commune Magazine 'A History of Violence,’ which examines the case of James Alex Fields — found guilty for the murder of Heather Heyer at the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville in 2017 when Fields drove his car through a crowd of counter-protesters, killing Heyer and the injuring 28. In this segment of our discussion, we ask Shane to examine the narratives that thrive within right-wing media spaces, including an examination of the pseudoscience of "race theory" and IQ, and the media personalities that use these racist, sexist, and chauvinist narratives to cultivate a base of followers, regardless of the wide range of scientific research on the matter. Our discussion with Shane covers numerous topics, including the "Intellectual Dark Web" (or as Shane says "the academics that circle around Joe Rogan for some reason"); the pseudoscientific claims surrounding race, ethnicity, and IQ; and an examination of observable patterns within far right insurgency, as examined in Shane's recent piece in Commune Magazine 'A History of Violence,’ which examines the case of James Alex Fields — found guilty for the murder of Heather Heyer at the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville in 2017 when Fields drove his car through a crowd of counter-protesters, killing Heyer and injuring 28. In Shane’s piece ‘A History of Violence’ and in this interview, Shane unpacks the observable patterns within far-right ideology and propaganda that has led individuals, like James Alex Fields, to commit seemingly random acts of violence, and how a combination of elements inherent in far-right ideology and propaganda cultivates a drive in alienated individuals to commit violent acts towards those perceived as an existential threat. In attracting alienated individuals and (in)directly encouraging them to act in ways that are violent and insurgent, the ideology of the far-right generates an imperative to commit acts of hate without necessitating any direct connection to any particular movement or ideology within the far-right, as has been the case with Fields. Shane describes the narratives that thrive within right-wing media spaces, including an examination of the pseudoscience of the “natural heritability” of intelligence — in relation to race and ethnicity — that continue to circulated within these spaces, as well as the media personalities that use racist, sexist, and chauvinist narratives to cultivate a base of followers, regardless of the wide range of scientific research that refute these claims on the matter. Also in this discussion, we address the government shutdown, workers rights, and the recent controversy surrounding the confrontation between Native elder Nathan Phillips and the students of Covington High at the Indigenous Peoples March last month. Shane Burley is a writer and filmmaker based in Portland, Oregon, who regularly reports on far-right movements in the US, as well as anti-fascist resistance, workers' rights, and class struggle. In this week’s episode of Coffee with Comrades, Pearson sits down with Shane Burley, author of Fascism Today: What It Is and How to End It. Shane is a film-maker and journalist based out of Portland, OR. His work has appeared in numerous outlets including Jacobin, Alternet, TruthOut, Salon, ThinkProgress, Waging Nonviolence, and many more. Shane’s recent article from Commune magazine, A History of Violence, provides a historical context for the trial of James Alex Fields, the white nationalist who murdered Heather Heyer and injured dozens of others at Unite the Right in Charlottesville, VA back in 2017. We discuss the current state of the Alt-Right, the monsters of the past and present, the fascist creep, mainstream white supremacy vs. full-fledged white nationalism, the perverse psychological self-image of racists as both victim and conqueror simultaneously, and how we can defend ourselves and our communities from future lone wolf attacks. On this edition of Parallax Views, journalist Shane Burley, author of Fascism Today: What It Is and How To End It, joins the show to discuss the trajectory of the alt right since the Charlottesville "Unite That Right Rally" and the recent conviction of alt right activist James Fields for the death of protester Heather Heyer at that event. The conversation begins with a discussion of the aforementioned August 2017 rally and it's aftermath. We dive into who James Fields is and why people like him become involved in white nationalist and far-right populist movements. Additionally, we discuss the ways in which the far-right recruit and target alienated young men.   From there Shane assesses the threat the alt right poses in the present especially in relation to lone wolf violence. This leads to a discussion of the "alt lite" and there role in the broader ecosystem of the populist right. Specifically, we delve into the personality of Gavin McInnes and the group he founded, the Proud Boys, and how they've courted white nationalists through their rhetoric. Shane then lays out what the tactics of deception that are utilized by the alt right with special reference to the idea, often promoted in alt right circles, of "hiding your power level". We then move onto the question of what fascism is and how it takes on different forms. Shane talks about how fascism manifests in other ways than the popular image of Nazi Germany's Third Reich. This leads us into a conversation about former Breitbart head honcho Steve Bannon and his brand of right-wing populism. During this portion of the conversation Shane and I talk about the Republican Party and its relation to Bannon's right-wing populist platform. And, of course, we discuss the recent Bannon/Frum debate and Shane's take on the question of de-platforming. We then move onto the alt right's rhetoric about "Social Justice Warriors" (SJWs) before delving into the role misogyny plays in the alt right ecosystem. This opens us up for a brief conversation on the phenomenon of women in the alt right. Shane and I then discuss the topic of entryism and the concept of the "Third Position", which Shane describes as the anti-capitalist "left-wing" of fascist ideology. Richard Spencer's advocating for the alt right to "move left" gets special mention during this segment. This leads into an important discussion about the right's attempts to create an anti-capitalist critique of immigration put forth by media personalities like Tucker Carlson in an attempt to appeal to the left. We then take a look at the alt right's obsession with war and the almost death cult-like mentality of their movement before wrapping up on the topic of antifascism's importance today. This episode contains two interviews. The first is with Shane Burley - filmmaker, journalist, and author of ‘Fascism Today: What It Is and How To End It.’ The second is with [RS] - journalist and radio host on the Progressive Radio Network. Each of these interviews focus on the dynamics and recent developments within Abolish ICE movement, and specifically the OccupyICE encampments that have sprung up in recent weeks around ICE offices throughout the U.S., the largest and most prominent being in Portland, Oregon. The formation of these encampments are in response to the increasingly Gestapo-like policies and tactics currently being employed by the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, in particular regarding the agency’s active role in the detainment of immigrants crossing the southern U.S. border seeking asylum. Much of the anger, and subsequent action, in recent weeks has been in response to the Trump Administration’s policy of separating immigrant families and imprisoning them in privately-owned detention facilities along the U.S. border. In my interview with Shane Burley, we discuss his recently published piece ‘Calls to abolish ICE grow as encampments multiply across the country.’ Shane breaks down the developments of the Abolish ICE movement, and describes the dynamics of the encampments that have arisen in recent weeks, forming barricades and camps intended to directly block ICE agents from being able to exit and enter their respective facilities and fulfill the agency’s directives. In the later half of this episode, [RS] discusses the themes in his recently published piece ‘From Occupation to Community: the Lessons From OccupyICE Portland.’ [RS] describes the community dynamics present in the OccupyICE encampment in Portland, as well as how important and absolutely necessary it is for this movement to continue to maintain and develop the community dynamics he witnessed and experienced firsthand in the Portland encampment. Shane Burley, author of "Fascism Today: What It Is and How To End It," goes over the troubling history of the pseudoscientific research surrounding race. He details the attempts by certain academics, primarily in the 1960's and 70's, to scientifically prove the existence of distinct racial categories, and that white people, as a so-called racial category, are generally superior to other races (people of color). These claims have been widely disproven by scientists and academics for years, but still manage to find life within online white nationalist sub-cultures, a prime example being the Alt-Right. In this episode, I speak with Shane Burley, author of "Fascism Today: What It Is and How To End It." In the beginning of this interview, Shane provides a precise description of what fascism is, the historical context in which it first emerged, as well what fascist organizing in modern American society looks like. We discuss and break down the pseudo-scientific claims espoused by many of these groups regarding the concepts of race, as well as the reasons as to why and how these widely dismissed pseudo-scientific claims still exist and continue to spread among the far-right. Shane also responds to a recent statement by Richard Spencer, the poster boy of the Alt-Right, in which he states that speaking at events to promote his views is no longer "fun" due to the fact that “Antifa [anti-fascist resistance] is winning."* Shane also describes the varied tactics used by anti-fascists that successfully undermine the ability of fascists groups to promote their ideology to the broader public, as well as their ability to effectively organize in the public sphere, as well as online. Shane Burley is a writer and filmmaker based in Portland, Oregon, who regularly reports on far-right movements in the US, as well as anti-fascist resistance. *Source: https://wapo.st/2EGpWt3 Episode Notes: - Learn more about and purchase Shane's book "Fascism Today: What It Is and How To End It" here: https://bit.ly/2JHcs3B - Learn more about Shane and his work at his website: https://www.shaneburley.net - Keep up to date on Shane's work by following him on Twitter: https://twitter.com/shane_burley1 - Read an excerpt of his book "Fascism Today" here: https://bit.ly/2HiftsU - The music featured in this episode is "Ooh Baby I Like To Draw" by Mux Mool. - Podcast website: https://www.lastborninthewilderness.com - Support the podcast: PATREON: www.patreon.com/lastborninthewilderness ONE-TIME DONATION: www.ko-fi.com/lastborninthewilderness - Follow and listen: SOUNDCLOUD: www.soundcloud.com/lastborninthewilderness ITUNES: www.goo.gl/Fvy4ca GOOGLE PLAY: https://goo.gl/wYgMQc STITCHER: https://goo.gl/eeUBfS - Social Media: FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/lastborninthewildernesspodcast TWITTER: www.twitter.com/lastbornpodcast INSTAGRAM:www.instagram.com/patterns.of.behavior
