In 1979 at 11 years old Jim first heard Bruce Springsteen sing Born to Run and Thunder Road and was never the same . Music had to be a part of my life!  After hearing Woody Guthrie sing I Ain't Got No Home, at 14, he bought an acoustic guitar! Woody posed a question in his music, "What does it mean to be an American?" Jim has spent his life trying to answer that question through story and song. Hearing  Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan,  sealed a lifelong deal. From 1993 until 2000, Jim toured the Midwest as a troubadour, performing at coffee shops, nursing homes, street corners, house concerts and community festivals both solo and later on with the Milwaukee Super group Frogwater. Jim tours North America, teaching at music camps, festivals, and concert series, as well as presenting my one man musical history shows like:  scraps of quilting music,  jews n blues, and  the jews of tin pan alley.  Performing about 125-150 shows a year. https://www.markhummel.com

On the version of Hot off the Wire posted April 9 at 7:30 a.m. CT: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has escalated his pledge to invade Rafah. In a video statement Monday, he declared: “It will happen. There is a date,” without elaborating. He spoke as Israeli negotiators are in Cairo discussing international efforts to broker a cease-fire deal with the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Israel has insisted on sending troops into Rafah, saying the city on the Egyptian border is Hamas’ last stronghold. However, this has raised international alarm over the fate of the around 1.4 million Palestinians sheltering in Rafah, most of whom are displaced from other parts of the Gaza Strip. Israel’s top ally, the U.S., has said invading Rafah would be a mistake and has demanded to see a credible plan to protect civilians. WASHINGTON (AP) — Special counsel Jack Smith’s team is urging the Supreme Court to reject former President Donald Trump’s claim that he is immune from prosecution in a case charging him with scheming to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The brief from prosecutors was submitted just over two weeks before the justices will take up the legally untested question of whether an ex-president is shielded from criminal charges for official actions taken in the White House. The outcome of the April 25 arguments is expected to help determine whether Trump faces trial this year in a four-count indictment that accuses him of conspiring to block the peaceful transfer of power after losing the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden. SALEM, Mass. (AP) — Police in Massachusetts say someone threw an explosive device onto the porch of The Satanic Temple at a time when no one was inside, and the device and damage it caused were not found until nearly 12 hours later. No injuries were reported. Police said in a news release Monday that state police bomb technicians ensured that the device was no longer a danger. Police dogs swept the location for other devices and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is assisting with the investigation. Police did not provide details on the damage. Police have responded to the temple previously for bomb threats and hate crimes. WASHINGTON (AP) — For the 10th consecutive month, Earth in March set a new monthly record for global heat — with both air temperatures and the world’s oceans hitting an all-time high for the month, the European Union climate agency Copernicus said. March 2024 averaged 57.9 degrees Fahrenheit, exceeding the previous record from 2016 by a tenth of a degree, according to Copernicus data. We've covered a number of underrated bands and albums, but perhaps the most underrated band of the 80's is 38 Special.  Formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1974 by Donnie Van Zandt and Don Barnes, 38 Special had a string of hits in the late 70's through the 80's including "Hold On Loosely,"  "Rockin' Into the Night," and "If I'd Been the One."  Special Forces is their fifth and most successful studio album, hitting number 10 on the Billboard 200.In addition to Van Zandt and Barnes, 38 Special's lineup for this album included Jeff Carlisi on guitar, Larry Junstrom on bass, Steve Brookins on drums, and Jack Grondin on drums.  A number of songs on this album were co-written by Jim Peterik, singer-songwriter and founder of the group Survivor.  Given the connection to Lynyrd Skynyrd (Donnie was the brother of original Skynyrd lead singer, Ronnie Van Zandt, and Junstrom was one of the founding members of Lynyrd Skynyrd), it is not surprising that their sound has its roots in Southern Rock.  However, 38 Special tended towards a more mainstream hard rock sound. The name of the group comes from an incident where the police were called on the band during a late night practice session.  The door was padlocked, and the police broke the lock by shooting it out ... with a 38 Special. Caught Up In YouThis is the first single and the big hit from the album, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Mainstream Rock charts.  Don Barnes sings lead on this track.  The lyrics are self-explanatory, extolling a girl with whom the singer is completely entranced. You Keep Runnin' AwayBarnes has the lead duties from this song again.  The lyrics describe a girl who has been burned in past relationships and has decided never to trust another man.  The singer encourages her to not give up, that "someday, someway, somewhere love is gonna find you."Back Door Stranger A deeper cut from the album, the lyrics describe a serial rapist sneaking around, and what will happen to him if the singer catches up with him.  "Take my chances, rather go to jail than see the eyes of a coward runnin' loose and well."  The guitar has a great wah-wah sound, and Donnie Van Zandt takes his turn on lead vocals for this track.Chain Lightnin' The thunder sound is striking as both the intro and the outro for this iconic song.  There's a little bit of a Pink Floyd echo to add to the mystery.  "And it's hotter than hell in the heavens tonight."  "And it's so tough when the satisfaction is greater than the risk."ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Ain't Got No Home by Clarence “Frogman” Henry (from the motion picture “Diner”)This novelty song was featured in the comedy-drama starring Steve Guttenberg and Kevin Bacon. STAFF PICKS:Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now) by Van Halen Bruce begins the staff picks with a deeper cut off the Diver Down album.  This cover was originally recorded in 1924, and came to the band's attention when David Lee Roth recorded it off a late night AM radio station.  Jan Van Halen, Eddie and Alex's father, is featured in this song playing clarinet.Did It in a Minute by Hall & Oates  Brian features a hit off the "Private Eyes" album from duo Darryl Hall and John Oates.  It was the third single from the album.  The upbeat song is about finding love almost instantaneously.  Hall wrote this with his girlfriend Sara Allen and her sister Janna, who came up with the chorus.Find Another Fool  by QuarterflashWayne gets a second chance to feature Portland's own Quarterflash.  This rocking minor-key song peaked at number 16 on the charts, and is a break-up song after the girl has had it with her ex-boyfriend's cheating ways.  The name comes from an Australian slang phrase, "a quarter flash, three parts foolish."  Quarterflash is the husband and wife team of Rindy and Marv RossMore Than This by Roxy MusicRob's staff pick is the first single off Roxy Music's last album, "Avalon."  Bryan Ferry began writing the songs for Avalon while on the west coast of Ireland, and the music reflects the melancholy feel of the location.  The song has an unusually long synth-driven outro. COMEDY TRACK:Piss On the Wall by the J. Geils BandSometimes you just must be going.  However, we do recommend that you find a toilet first!

This week marks the one year anniversary of the so-called U.S. being placed under lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. One year ago, I was in New York city visiting childhood friends and the comrades in Dumb & Awful. I was literally in the middle of making plans to chill with Amy and Liz from Rebel Steps when the coronavirus was officially declared a national emergency. In the time that’s passed, our society has become more isolated and alienated than ever before. Worldwide, millions have died. To this day, the U.S. has continued to absolutely bungle this debacle. To mark this historic year, I wanted to do a retrospective, reflective episode on how COVID-19 has impacted human society and how human beings have become atomized, but also how we’ve banded together, rose up against white supremacy in this country, and instituted sweeping projects of tenant-organizing and mutual aid when the state left us out to dry. Joining me today is Jules Taylor, a musician, producer, and podcaster living in upstate, NY.  Jules and I spend the episode chatting about the emergence of new conspiracies, the way capitalism exacerbated this crisis (fueling and profiting off our ongoing immiseration,) and—most importantly—the ways we’ve fought back. But it’s also a heavy episode, where we leave some space to mourn and grieve and contemplate mortality. Things mentioned by Jules during our conversation:  The Slow Cancelling of the Future – Mark Fisher Capitalist Realism by Mark Fisher Cover of the New Yorker Magazine 12.7.20 Women With Cancer Awarded Billions in Baby Powder Suit The fiasco of the 1976 ‘swine flu affair’ The Spanish Flu actually came from Kansas Notes: Check out Jules’ podcast, No Easy Answers, and his website: JulesTaylorMusic.com. After we put out our three-part series introducing socialism, communism, and anarchism, I had a flood of folks message me on Twitter or shoot me an email and ask, “What happened to the social ecology episode?” As I’ve said before, sadly, it got lost to the eldritch gods of audio-editing. Rest assured that we’ll do a deep-dive into social ecology at some point in the near future as it’s a branch of leftist theory I’m profoundly interested in, but—in the mean time—hopefully this week’s episode of the podcast can tide you over. I recently sat down with Daniel Baryon, better known by his YouTube alias, Anark, to discuss possibly the most important text of Murray Bookchin’s career, The Ecology of Freedom: The Emergence and Dissolution of Hierarchy. Daniel and I spent some time digging into some of the text’s major themes, argued that The Ecology of Freedom is a work as monumental as Marx’s Capital, and offer some critiques of the text, as well. On January 15, in Tallahassee, FL, the FBI arrested Daniel Baker, a local leftist, veteran, and a former combat medic with the YPG, on trumped-up charges meant to silence dissent and criminalize community armed defense.  FBI agents bullrushed Dan's apartment, guns drawn, broken open the front door, and threw a flash bang grenade before making the arrest. Dan, who has been described by various news outlets as being involved in some insidious "Florida Cspitol plot" and having connections with a "Marxist guerilla organization" has been charged by the federal government, denied bail on the grounds that he's a flight risk, and held in solitary confinement in a segretated housing unit because authorities fear he will "radicalize" other prisoners. Allegations surrounding Dan's arrest stem from flimsy, circumstantial evidence, derived almost entirely from social media posts Dan allegedly made, some fliers Dan allegedly printed off and distributed in the community calling for folks to arm themselves against a possible white supremacist coup, and a few pithy memes he allegedly reposted on the internet. Should Dan be convicted, he could face up to 5 years in prison and over $250,000 in fines. But who is Dan Baker, really? Today, we set the record straight. In this edition of Coffee with Comrades, I am joined by Eric, Dan's friend and former roommate, and our mutual comrade, Jack, to discuss the allegations, the anti-repression work surrounding Dan's case, the DeSantis administration's anti-protest bill, and a whole lot more. I want to preface by saying I think this is an immensely vital case of vindictive, opportunistic repression against the left, the opening salvo of the repression that is sure to come from Biden's neoliberal administration which has made no pretense of being friendly with the left. But this moment can prove instructive to folks interested in doing the hard work of defending their communities from the horrors of white supremacist and fascist violence by understanding how the state will crackdown on those of us who choose to stand up for our neighbors and take proactive measures to ensure our communities can continue to survive in spite of the crises engendered by capitalism and the state. This week, we’re wrapping up the third installment of our mini-series on lefty ideologies by closing with what I suspect is the most radical, uncompromising horizon of revolutionary politics: anarchism. As I’ve said on every single episode of this three part mini-series, don’t take my word on what you’re about to hear. I’m biased. I am an anarchist because I reckon that anarchy is the most dangerous and powerful idea in all of human history and that it is a material philosophy that has the potential to eradicate unnecessary human suffering and institute full communism for all living beings on this planet. Also, if you think it would be helpful, you can check out the PowerPoints for each of these introductory philosophical episodes.  PowerPoints: Socialism Communism Anarchism Notes: Support Coffee with Comrades on Patreon, follow us on Twitter and Instagram, and visit our website. In this week’s edition of Coffee with Comrades, we continue our exploration of the three prevailing leftist tendencies with a discussion of the big, scary c-word: communism. I said this last week and, doubtless, I’ll say it again next Tuesday, but I wanna provide a quick caveat before we launch into today’s edition of the program. A lot of people have a lot of different feelings and perspectives on what “socialism,” “communism,” and “anarchism” mean. Plenty of folks simply regurgitate whatever they hear on social media—for good or ill. Others actually take the time to read the theory. Some of those folks form their own perspectives and insights, while a good chunk of others just follow a party-line. Don’t take my word for things here. This episode series is meant to serve as a very brief introduction to each of these rich, vast, and complex ideological positions. So, take everything I have to say here with a grain of salt, read and explore these theories for yourself, and—most importantly—use these ideas to improve the lives and material conditions of your friends, family, neighbors, and comrades. That said, this discussion of communism did get the stamp-of-approval from one of my Marxist-Leninist comrades so, take that for whatever it’s worth. So, a lot of listeners who’re new to left politics have asked us in the past to do introductions to the major theoretical and ideological positions on the broad left. The good news is we’ve done just that! Last year, I sat down with some friends and comrades in the Center for Participant Education to outline, in broad strokes, the differences between socialism, communism, and anarchism. What you’ll hear today is the first of those dialogues. This edition of the podcast is all about the economics, politics, and philosophical perspectives of socialism as it is broadly construed. I talk about Marxism, labor, and try to distinguish socialism from communism. Keep in mind, this is all coming from someone who falls pretty firmly into anarchic tendencies, so take everything I have to say with a grain of salt. I encourage you, first and foremost, to investigate different positions on the revolutionary left for yourself and think critically about these ideas so that you can come up with you own convictions and conceptions. Just the same, I hope this mini-series paints each of these distinct philosophies in a fair, clear, and concise light so that you can hopefully begin to understand and distinguish the differences between these complex and complicated philosophies. 1-800-Cocaine R&B on a Snow DayThis R&B show has it all. From Clarence Frogman Henry's "Ain't Got No Home", through "Drinkin' Wine, Spo-Dee-O-Dee" (Sticks McGhee's original version), Count Basie's take on "Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball?", "That's What Makes my Baby Fat" from Joe Morris and Faye Scruggs and "Easy Easy Baby" from Ann Cole, yet another fine R&B singer who's almost completely forgotten today. Brian delivers a wonderful show.He loved the PSA's on WMUA and I'm sure he couldn't resist the 1-800-COCAINE ad for a snow day.Ain't Got No Home | Clarence Frogman Henry | 1956A Gay Day | Earl Bostic | 1957Rocket 88 | Bill Haley and the Comets | 1951Pretty Girls | Eugene Church | 1958Eyesight to the Blind | The Larks | 1951I Don't Hurt Anymore | Dinah Washington | 1956Drinkin' Wine, Spo-Dee-O-Dee | Sticks McGhee | 1949Big Town | Roy Brown | 1951The Applejack | Joe Morris | 1948I'm a Man | Bo Diddley | 1955Goodnight, Sweetheart | The Spaniels | 1954Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball? | Count Basie and his Orchestra | 1949So Long | Ruth Brown | 1949Have Mercy, Baby | The Dominos | 1952Cole Slaw | Frank Culley | 1949I Got a Woman | Ray Charles | 1958Rollin' Stone | Muddy Waters | 1950That's What Makes my Baby Fat | Joe Morris and Faye Scruggs | 1953Tweedle Dee | Laverne Baker | 1954Help Me Somebody | The Five Royales | 1962Just Keep it Up | Dee Clark | 1959Stay | Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs | 1960Chanson d'Amour | Art and Dotty Todd | 1958Hurt | Roy Hamilton | 1954Around and Around | Chuck Berry | 1958X-Temporaneous Boogie | Camille Howard and her Joy Boys | 1948Easy Easy Baby | Ann Cole | 1956
