In a candid discussion with Laura, veteran union organizer Alex Han and U.S. Right Wing expert Tarso Ramos explore whether workers can unite against rising authoritarianism.Description: America is moving towards authoritarianism faster than ever before, signaling a “turning point” in our history. But what will it actually take to reverse course? What could improve the chances of a winning multiracial democracy? The answer is worker organizers, and joining Laura to discuss grassroots resistance are Tarso Ramos and Alex Han. Han is a legacy union organizer and the Executive Director of In These Times, the long-running Chicago-based magazine dedicated to social movements and economic justice. Ramos is a leading expert on the U.S. Right Wing and former Executive Director of Political Research Associates. He now serves as Senior Advisor to Future Currents, a strategic planning group of social and economic justice leaders. In this exclusive interview, recorded at a conference held at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) in New York City, the trio discuss the challenges before us, and the potential opportunities to mobilize working people. In the wake of Trump's mass layoffs and the abduction of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a union member who was wrongfully exported to El Savador, can enough workers and their allies band together for bold, coordinated action? Watch our full report on the conference, convened by the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies with the Cornell Worker Institute. Check this podcast feed for the special report to be released June 4th, 2025.GUESTS:• Alex Han is the Executive Director of In These Times, the long-running Chicago-based magazine dedicated to social movements and economic justice. Become a member at https://LauraFlanders.org/donateFull Conversation from our episode "Trump, Netanyahu & the Weaponizing of Fear One Year After October 7":Israel's far-right leaders, assisted by their allies in the U.S., have waged a year-long assault on Gaza in the name of “self-defense” after the attacks by Hamas on October 7 2023. Now Israel stands accused of genocide and war is breaking out across the region. Military conflict won't make Jews — or any of us — more safe, so why do leaders like Benjamin Netanyahu and former U.S. president Donald Trump continue to get away with casting themselves as the “protectors” of Israel and the Jewish people? The Trump campaign is actually deeply allied with anti-semitic Christian Zionists whose investment in Israel is tied up with a belief in Biblical “End Times” when Jews convert or perish. In this report, (which was recorded before the Israeli assassination of Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon,) we turn to Ben Lorber, a Senior Analyst at Political Research Associates and co-author of the book “Safety Through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antisemitism.” Also joining us are Phyllis Bennis, Director of the New Internationalism Project and fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington D.C. and the author of several books on the United Nations and the Middle East; and Yoav Peck, an organizational psychologist, Executive Director of Solidarity of Nations and Israeli peace activist based in Jerusalem. Together we unpack the links between Christian Zionism and Jewish Zionism, look at how trauma has become a political tool, and ask, how might any of us become less vulnerable to the weaponizing of our fears, with a commentary from Laura.“Real antisemitism is on the rise, but the problem is with all the attention being put on the false claim that criticizing Israel, demanding a ceasefire, demanding an end to genocide, standing with South Africa, asking the International Court of Justice to hold Israel accountable for genocide [is antisemitic]. Those things are not antisemitic. But if you put all your focus there, you're not out there ending the kind of real antisemitism that comes from the Right.” - Phyllis Bennis“It doesn't make us any safer to empower the state, to go after protesters in this way, and as a Jew it's, especially galling to me that it's done in the name of Jewish safety . . . Taking away people's speech rights, deporting people in the name of keeping me safe doesn't keep me safe.” - Ben Lorber“People are traumatized and retraumatized and dwelling on October 7. The media is supporting it every day . . . But October 7 is a year ago, and where we are now is a completely different place. So now we have a major educational challenge ahead of us to get people to see the link between Israel's occupation of the Palestinians and the present situation.” - Yoav PeckGuests:• Phyllis Bennis: Fellow, Institute for Policy Studies & Director, New Internationalism Project; International Advisor, Jewish Voice for Peace• Ben Lorber: Senior Research Analyst, Political Research Associates; Co-Author, Safety through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antisemitism• Yoav Peck: Organizational Psychologist; Executive Director, Achvat Amim/Solidarity of Nations Full Episode Notes are located HERE. Antisemitism is on the rise today. From synagogue shootings by white nationalists, to right-wing politicians and media figures pushing George Soros conspiracy theories, it's clear that exclusionary nationalist movements are growing. By spreading division and fear, they put Jews, along with other marginalized groups and multiracial democracy itself, at risk. And since the outbreak of war in Gaza, debates around antisemitism have become more polarized and high-stakes than ever. How can we stand in solidarity with Palestinians seeking justice, while also avoiding antisemitism — and resisting those who seek to conflate the two? How do we forge the coalitions across communities that we need, in order to overcome the politics of division and fear? In Safety through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antisemitism (Melville House, 2024), Shane Burley and Ben Lorber help us break the current impasse to understand how antisemitism works, what's missing in contemporary debates, and how to build true safety through solidarity, for Jews and all people. Shane Burley is a writer and filmmaker based in Portland, Oregon. Ben Lorber is a Senior Research Analyst at Political Research Associates, a progressive think tank that monitors far-right movements. Ben Lorber and Shane Burley, co-authors of Safety Through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antisemitism, join me to discuss the absolutely timely moment and context this book is being published in. They raise the need for, and the strong historical legacies of, Jewish anti-Zionist solidarity with pro-Palestine movements, while articulating and bringing forward critical analysis of the shape, character, and histories of antisemitism in primarily Western Christian societies. With antisemitism and Islamophobia on the rise, Shane and Ben articulate a vision and present a radical guide to fight antisemitism and build safety through solidarity for Jewish and non-Jewish peoples and communities alike. Ben Lorber is a researcher, journalist and movement strategist. He works at Political Research Associates, a social movement think tank, as a Senior Research Analyst focusing on antisemitism and white nationalism. Lorber's work has appeared in The Nation, Salon, Jewish Daily Forward, Religion Dispatches and more, and a range of outlets including The Washington Post and Huffington Post turn to him regularly for quotations on antisemitism and the Right. Shane Burley is an author and filmmaker based in Portland, Oregon. He is the author of Why We Fight: Essays on Fascism, Resistance, and Surviving the Apocalypse (AK Press, 2017) and Fascism Today: What It Is and How to End It (AK Press, 2021), and the editor of No Pasaran: Antifascist Dispatches from a World in Crisis (AK Press, 2022). His writing has appeared in places such as NBC News, Al Jazeera, The Daily Beast, The Baffler, Jacobin, Jewish Currents, Haaretz, Oregon Humanities, Protean, Yes Magazine, In These Times, and the Oregon Historical Quarterly. On this edition of Parallax Views, Mark Ames, journalist and co-host of the popular podcast Radio War Nerd w/ John Dolan (aka Gary Brecher), joins the show to discuss his 2014 NFSFWCORP piece "The Kings of Garbage, or, The ADL Spied on Me and All I Got Was This Lousy Index Card". Due to his anti-apartheid activism at Berkeley, Mark Ames found out in the 90s that he'd been spied upon by the ADL. His file listed him marked him as a "Pinko". This leads us into the story of Roy Bullock, an investigator who spied on anti-Apartheid activists for the Anti-Defamation League and the South African apartheid regime. Working with SFPD intelligence officer Tom Gerard (who also had a spooky background involving CIA dirty wars in Latin America), Bullock was involved in all kinds of skullduggery, including a case that almost led to the murder of a Simon Wiesenthal Center researcher so that an ADL researcher could take his job and make some extra cash. It's a wild story that involves a spy ring within the ADL spying on American anti-apartheid activists. This also takes us into a discussion of how the Irwin Sewell and the ADL had dossiers on antifascist researchers like Chip Berlet of Political Research Associates, the relationship between Israel and South African apartheid, the ADL's shift from focusing on far-right movement like the John Birchers to left wing activists in Berkeley and Arab Americans, the Arab American Anti-Discrimination Committee and the car bombing assassination of Palestinian activist Alex Odeh, Abe Foxman (national director of the Anti-Defamation League from 1987 to 2015), the FBI (and LA Times?) vs. the ADL, ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt's embrace of Elon Musk (and curious comments comparing him favorably to noted antisemite Henry Ford), ADL spying on black Americans like former Congressman Ron Dellums, the ADL as part of the National Security State, philosemitic antisemitism, Israel as being its own worst enemy, the canceling of author and journalist Vincent Bevins in Germany, and more.

What does it mean to read LA in the frame of the “Americas”, and to understand its police violence in the context of a hemispheric imperialist project of domination? Inversely, how can we understand abolitionism as a political project that is continental, local and circulating? We talk about this in this special episode from Traffic in the Americas about police violence and abolitionist resistance in Los Angeles (California) with Hamid Khan from the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition and Ananya Roy from the UCLA Luskin Institute on Inequality and Democracy. It was made in collaboration with the Laboratorio de Narrativas Urbanas (LABNA) and Sergio Montero. Hosted by Isabel Peñaranda Currie. This episode also features an original composition and performance by FreeSoul Smith for Sur-Urbano, and which was produced by Upeksha - Voices of Resilience. Smith is part of the Esquina Redonda, an amazing group that brings together people displaced by the Bronx police operation in Bogotá, and which also participated in the Traffic in the Americas conference. Hamid explains the history and work of @stoplapdspying and their recent report, “Automating Banishment”, which studies the relationship of “data-driven policing” to real estate development and settler colonialism. It "belongs to the community, produced through collective study and grassroots self-defense". You can read the full report here. Ananya spoke about her work on “Racial banishment', which “emphasizes state-instituted violence against racialised bodies and communities”, shifting attention from displacement to the dispossession of personhood underpinning racial capitalism. She writes that “The antonym of racial banishment is, as the black radical tradition insists, freedom. These “freedom dreams” ([…] animate urban struggles around the world.” We end by talking about how abolitionist ideas participate in kinds of traffic in the Americas. You can find one of her articles on Racial Banishment here. This conversation arose within the framework of "Traffic in the Americas," a transnational initiative that sought to promote collaborations between academics and activists to theorize how different types of traffic (of people, objects, ideas) shape the cities of the Americas. It was organized by: Kevin O'Neill of the University of Toronto, Austin Zeiderman of LSE , Ananya Roy of UCLA and Sergio Montero of the Los Andes University thanks to funding from The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Hamid Khan is an organizer with the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition. He was the founder and former Executive Director of South Asian Network (1990-2010), and serves on the board of Political Research Associates, an organization that seeks to advance progressive thinking and action by providing research-based information, analysis, and referrals. The mission of the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition is to build community-based power to dismantle police surveillance, spying, and infiltration programs. The coalition utilizes multiple campaigns to advance an innovative organizing model that is Los Angeles-based but has implications regionally, nationally, and internationally Founding Director of the UCLA Luskin Institute on Inequality and Democracy, Professor of Urban Planning, Social Welfare, and Geography and The Meyer and Renee Luskin Chair in Inequality and Democracy.
Is the pope trying to curtail a Vatican organization affiliated with Clarence and Ginni Thomas, right wing judges, and developing world dictators? We're talking about Opus Dei, the Catholic Information Network, Leonard Leo, Ginni and Clarence Thomas, and incidentally in the context of this story, the Order of the Knights of Malta. If you like our content please become a patron to get our exclusive premium episodes, as well as our public episodes ad-free. Ginni Thomas has led a life in adherence to various cults. She started with Lifespring, a self-help cult which was sued into bankruptcy in the late 1980s and early 1990s after a string of accidental deaths related to their activities. From there she worked with a series of "deprogramming" organizations which strayed into kidnapping-for-hire in their efforts to forcibly remove the relatives of wealthy families from other cults. Today, Ginni's cult is the assortment of far-right American political interests which use her husband's name and influence to try and coalesce into a singular political vision. One of those interests is a secretive organization of wealthy Catholic donors named Opus Dei, which was also featured in Dan Brown's novel The DaVinci Code. 1 Opus Dei was formed during the Spanish Civil War by a priest named Josemaría Escrivá. From its outset, it has been an advocate of far-right governments, from Franco's Spain to various military dictatorships in South America. They were rumored to be involved in the Argentine military dictatorship during the Falklands War, which indirectly caused the collapse of Banco Ambrosiano, after which that bank's chairman Roberto Calvi was found hanging from the Blackfriar Bridge in London with bricks in his pockets and $14,000 in cash in his jacket. The bricks signified his rumored membership in another secret organization: the Masonic lodge Propaganda Due. In America, Opus Dei is behind money which flows into far-right political causes, particularly those related to the appointment of federal judges. The organization's American functions are run by a man named Leonard Leo, who was Trump's primary judicial consultant. Leo was also a consultant to the George W. Bush administration on the selection of justices Samuel Alito and John Roberts. 2 The Order of the Knights of Malta are unfortunate victims in this story. The current pope stuck them with the most prominent far-right priest in America, Cardinal Raymond Burke, when he demoted that priest from the Apostolic Signatura, the Vatican's equivalent of a supreme court back in 2014. The pope fired Burke again and reinstated Albrecht von Boeselager, the former chancellor of the Order who Burke and its Grand Master had purged for distributing condoms and morning-after birth control pills in the Myanmar region. More recently, the pope has ordered all vatican organizations to deposit their funds into the Vatican Bank within the next 30 days, and demoted the chief clergy officer in Opus Dei from a bishop to a priest. The pope has also widely banned the Latin mass, another favorite cultural argument of Cardinal Burke. Perhaps the pope is curtailing Opus Dei specifically? 3 Episode #Dubimeter: 15 1. There are an estimated 40 million Americans and approximately 650 million people worldwide involved with Pentecostal/ Charismatic groups led by a prophet or apostle who claims to get direct revelations from God. Most of these fulfill the BITE model of Authoritarian Control criteria. Some of these folks see themselves as “spiritual warriors” and are convinced other people who wish to have human rights (women who wish to have control of their bodies, gay marriage, and reject theocracy) are satanic/ demonic forces. Dr. André Gagné, professor in theological studies at Concordia University (Montréal) teams up for this interview with Frederick Clarkson, Senior Research Analyst at Political Research Associates who has been reporting on the rise of the theocratic Christian Right for four decades. The far right is not a monolithic project; it is, rather, a movement of movements that have grown out of the failures of capitalism as a social order and that are fueled by human society's darkest tendencies (racism, misogyny, xenophobia, greed, domination, etc.). What are these different movements that make up what we call the far right today? What vision of social order are they fighting to impose? What does it mean for all of us that the heterogenous tendencies and motivations of the far right are converging into a powerful coalition that is willing to resort to political violence to achieve its collective ends? And how do we fight back?In this special series of The Marc Steiner Show, co-hosted by Marc Steiner and Bill Fletcher Jr., we will examine the rise of the right in the US and beyond, we will explore the different tendencies and motivations fueling today's surge in far-right politics, and we will engage with a range of critical voices who can help us understand how we got here and what we can do about it. In Episode One of “Rise of the Right,” Marc and Bill are joined by Tarso Ramos and Nancy MacLean to examine the Jan. 6 insurrection at the US Capitol not as a violent aberration, but as one manifestation among many of far-right forces that are converging into a broad, antidemocratic coalition and exerting power on the streets, in the courts and legislatures, and in corporate boardrooms.Tarso Ramos is the executive director of Political Research Associates, and he's been researching and challenging the US rightwing for more than 25 years. On the Season 3 premiere of Momentum: A Race Forward Podcast, Western States Center Executive Director and Race Forward Senior Fellow Eric Ward joins us to ground and center us, and you, our listeners, in our racial justice work! Update: Hiba is back from sabbatical, and now Chevon is taking her well-deserved time off, and in the meantime, Dennis is back to fill in! Hiba and Dennis open the episode with a short recap of recent happenings –– the Delta COVID-19 variant, Climate Change/flooding in NYC, the ongoing fight over critical race theory being taught in schools, and refugee resettlement efforts triggered by global events. Holding all this, Dennis and Eric have a conversation inspired by Grace Lee Boggs' quote “what time is it in the clock of the world”, and what it means for the hurdles we are facing as racial justice practitioners. Eric also discusses the urgent work of racial equity, how work towards a multiracial democracy is the alternative to the spread of white nationalism, the case study of the city of Portland, and extremist backlash and insurgencies, and how we can use that backlash as fuel to carry us forward in our work to “12:02AM”. This week's episode features another super informative--and potentially disturbing--conversation with returning guest, Fred Clarkson of the Political Research Associates. Matt Shea is a former Republican state legislator from my home state of Washington, up in the Pacific Northwest. He's long been a lightning rod for controversy in his own right, and a few years ago drew nationwide attention for his connection to some very far-right causes. But now, Fred has uncovered a new and potentially more disturbing connection in the person of Timothy Taylor, a New Apostolic Reformation "apostle" who is also a major proponent of the 7 mountains dominion mandate theology. That the two men are now apparently working together for some agenda is an area of major concern, and something to keep a close eye on moving forward. You'll learn more about both men, and what they're working on, in this very educational episode. Join the MindShift Podcast Community on Patreon! Why is everyone talking about deconstruction? Why are hashtags like #exvangelical becoming so familiar? Are people leaving evangelical churches in droves? These are just a few of the questions that my guest Chrissy Stroop and I discuss in this week's episode of The Wonder and The Mystery of Being.Chrissy Stroop holds a Ph.D. in History and Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities from Stanford University. She filed her dissertation (as Christopher Stroop, pre-transition), "Providential Empire: Russia's Religious Intelligentsia and the First World War" in May 2012. Since that time Stroop has taught at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration in Moscow, Russia, and at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Chrissy has written for The New Republic, The Economist, The New York Times, Foreign Policy, Political Research Associates, Religion Dispatches, The Moscow Times, Eurasianet, Playboy, or Dame Magazine, and co-edited a book called Empty the Pews: Stories of Leaving the Church with Lauren O'Neal.Follow Chrissy Stroop on twitter:https://twitter.com/C_StroopSupport Chrissy Stroop on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/cstroopEmpty the Pews on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XL2T2LD/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

In this episode, I am joined by two Hungarian scholars, Gábor Scheiring from Bocconi University and Kristóf Szombati from the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology. Gábor and Kristóf have worked extensively together in opposition politics but also in academia, co-authoring multiple papers on the political economy of Hungary. We discuss together the ideology and class-coalitions sustaining Hungary's current authoritarian regime. We talk about racism, labor exploitation, democratic suppression - but also social policy initiatives such as the Public Works Program, which solved unemployment by making the state an employer of last resort… with far-reaching political consequences. This week on The Times of Israel's weekly podcast Times We Tell, we honor Black History Month and speak to three members of the Black and Jewish communities about their experiences, their struggles and their visions for the future in a panel, “Circles of Trust: Black and Jewish Communities Fight Together for Change.” A little about our panelists: The Times of Israel readers may be familiar with Ed Gaskin through his stunning blog on The Times of Israel, “After the Tree of Life tragedy, I went to Shabbat services and never stopped.” Gaskin still attends services at Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley, Massachusetts, as well as the Roxbury Presbyterian Church in Roxbury. He is joining us from Randolph, Massachusetts. Gaskin earned an M. Div. degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and graduated as a Martin Trust fellow from MIT's Sloan School of Management. He has published several books on a range of topics with social justice themes, was a co-organizer of the first faith-based initiative on reducing gang violence at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, and has taught a seminary class on the topic of Christianity and the problem of racism for over 25 years. Ginna Green is a political strategist, writer, movement-builder, and consultant, and partner and chief strategy officer at Uprise. A Schusterman senior fellow and a Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance notable woman, Green is also a fellow at the Kogod Research Center of the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America and sits on the boards of Women's March, Political Research Associates, the Jews of Color Initiative, Bend the Arc, and the Jewish Social Justice Roundtable. Green is a frequent speaker and writer on democracy, race, racism in the Jewish community, Jewish community diversity, and leadership. Green is Zooming into the panel from Columbia, South Carolina. Our final panelist is Rabbi Shais Rishon, also known as MaNishtana. Rishon is an author, writer, educator, playwright, rabbi, and public speaker, whose work on racial and religious identity and culture – and how their intersections manifest in America – faces prejudice, bias, and ignorance head-on, asking the questions about humanity, race, religion, and social injustice that we all have (and maybe are afraid to talk about). In February 2018, Rishon earned his first Orthodox rabbinical ordination. He lives in New York with his family, but is joining us from San Diego. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Rev. Margaret Ernst celebrates the Black, indigenous, and people of color-led movements and multi-racial coalitions which under Trumpian tyranny, succeeded in getting him out of office and which have put racial justice at the center of national public policy. In the spirit of that celebration and with belief in what can happen when we organize with clarity and purpose, she invites White Christians into supporting these movements for the long-haul and to align our own political strategy to stop how our identities as White Christians are weaponized to keep powers and principalities in place that hurt us all. "Take a breath. The Good News of a world without White Christian Supremacy is real. It may seem impossible. But that's what faith is for." The following was initially a video interview published by the Romanian left media outlet The Barricade. It is an discussion with Chip Berlet, a long time researcher into the movement and machinations of the American far-right, conducted after the events on Capitol Hill on 1/6/21. It is reposted here as a bonus episode for my listeners. Original description of the episode courtesy of The Barricade: On January 6th, 2021 pro-Trump supporters, from QAnon conspiracy believers to the members of the militia-oriented Oathkeepers organization, stormed Capitol Hill in the belief that sitting President Donald J. Trump had a potential second term in office stolen from him vis-a-vis election fraud. J.G. Michael, host of the Parallax Views podcast, reached out to Chip Berlet, long-time researcher into the machinations of the American far right, for comment. For decades Berlet, a former analyst at Political Research Associates and at one time Vice President of the National Lawyers Guild, has honed his skills as a scholar to become an expert on the topics of right-wing populism, fascism, and the spread of conspiracy theories in society. His writings have been features in such outlets as The New York Times, CovertAction Quarterly, The Progressive, The Public Eye, Z Magazine, and The Des Moines Register. He is also the author of Trumping Democracy: From Reagan to the Alt Right and co-author, with Matthew Lyons, of “Right-Wing Populism: Too Close for Comfort”. In this video interview, conducted exclusively for The Barricade, Berlet gives his thoughts on the Capitol Hill riots, the dangers of unleashing the National Security Apparatus in the aftermath of this event, and much more. J.G. Michael is the producer and host of Parallax Views, a program covering an eclectic variety of topics ranging from politics and pop culture to history and philosophy as well as everything in between. Previously he worked for Zero Books as the co-host of the Alternatives podcast with C. Derrick Varn. He has interviewed such well-known public figures as Noam Chomsky, Academy Award-nominated screenwriter John Sayles, Lt. Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, and many, many others.

Voice of the People: Radio by and for the 99% will continue a theme of crime and incarceration in light of the Missoula City Council making a decision on Monday, August 31 on whether or not to “defund” the proposed increase in the Missoula City Police budget and transfer that money to mental health and affordable housing services. In the first hour we discuss items in the news, continuing to cover the pandemic and the economic catastrophe for the 99% allowed to happen by Congress, while billionaires grow even richer. And some back story to the police leadership in Kenosha Wisconsin, scene of the latest police murder. We then review the writings of Alex Vitale based on his book “The End of Policing.” And a report from Political Research Associates on the size and scope of armed paramilitary and far-right groups' activities since the Minneapolis Police murder of George Floyd. We read the statement from the Missoula organization The 1700 for Liberation that demands of the Missoula City Council adopt their police “defunding” proposal. And we look at an article in the Great Falls Tribune featuring the activist work of past show interviewee Laurie Little Dog. The articles goes into depth about the US Census and its importance to Native Tribes and how the Montana Department of Corrections had initially erased some significant information of native inmates. In the third half hour we interview Clemente Arciga, a Missoula carpenter on parole, about his story, his experiences in the Montana incarceration system, and his work with “Welcome Back” (look at their facebook page) advocacy and support for released inmates. And his work with #letthemcomehome, an effort to improve the safety of incarcerated people during the pandemic. And his work on a September 2nd rally at the Capitol in Helena to demand criminal justice reform. Then for the last half hour we have a great conversation with a Friend of the Show, Sue Harrison and our sound sound guy Jim Gillan. The conversation goes into Angela Davis' contrast of “abolition feminism” vs. “carceral feminism.” Join us in our social distancing by listening from Noon to 2 pm on Saturdays in Missoula, Montana on 105.5 FM or streaming worldwide on 1055kfgm.org. This conversation with Zoé Samudzi was recorded to operates as a complement of her text “Reparative Futurities: Thinking From the Ovaherero and Nama Colonial Genocide,” commissioned for and published in The Funambulist 30 (July-August 2020) REPARATIONS. Zoé begins by contextualizing the history of the first 20th century genocide, which was committed by the German settler colonial army against the Ovaherero and Nama nations in what is now Namibia. We then talks of the various forms of coalition settler colonial powers practice with each other, but also how the struggles against them can, in turn, form large solidarity fronts worldwide. Finally, Zoé describes the argument of her piece in The Funambulist 30 about the notion of reparative futurities. Zoé Samudzi is a writer and doctoral candidate in Medical Sociology at the University of California, San Francisco. She is also a photographer and the archivist with MATATU Nomadic Cinema. This week, I'm going to be talking about the history of white supremacist and Nazi appropriation of Germanic and Nordic symbols. This is at the heart of my work, and is a big part of the reason I write about the Norse path. I think it is a deep responsibility that we have as white people to understand our cultural lineage, and how we got to this place. In this segment of our second joint interview, [RS] and I speak with Shane Burley — journalist and author of 'Fascism Today: What It Is and How To End It.' Our discussion with Shane covers numerous topics, including the "Intellectual Dark Web" (or as Shane says "the academics that circle around Joe Rogan for some reason"), the pseudoscience of race theory and IQ, and the examination of the patterns within the far right insurgency, as examined in Shane's recent piece in Commune Magazine 'A History of Violence,’ which examines the case of James Alex Fields — found guilty for the murder of Heather Heyer at the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville in 2017 when Fields drove his car through a crowd of counter-protesters, killing Heyer and the injuring 28. In this segment of our discussion, we ask Shane to examine the narratives that thrive within right-wing media spaces, including an examination of the pseudoscience of "race theory" and IQ, and the media personalities that use these racist, sexist, and chauvinist narratives to cultivate a base of followers, regardless of the wide range of scientific research on the matter. Shane Burley is a writer and filmmaker based in Portland, Oregon, who regularly reports on far-right movements in the US, as well as anti-fascist resistance, workers’ rights, and class struggle. Supposedly, the far right have won. So what now? We ask our guests this week the same question, taking from a mixed pot of loss and success. Whether it's about the fight for reproductive justice in the South, or a movement for rural agency in progressive work, our guests offer some wisdom on what's happening now, and what's next as we head into the new administration. The Facing Race conference, coordinated by Race Forward this November in Atlanta, brought together some of the most noteworthy names in progressive organizing right now. This week on the show, we have a special compilation of interviews from the conference with these very activists. On this Holiday Special for the Laura Flanders Show Podcast, Laura speaks with Tarso Luís Ramos, executive director of Political Research Associates, about the far right's global dawn; Kim Diehl of the National Employment Law Project, on strategy for progressive movements. Utah Hosts Two Different Global Gatherings On this episode of State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, Rev. Welton Gaddy takes a closer look at two global gatherings taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah over a span of just two weeks. Last weekend, 10,000 representatives of 50 different faith traditions travelled to the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Salt Lake City for a global discussion on interfaith initiatives. This weekend, the World Congress of Families will also hold a global gathering in Salt Lake City, but instead will be meeting to promote an exclusive, discriminatory vision of religion. Eric Ethington of Political Research Associates join us to address how PRA works to expose the ways in which the religious right, including the World Congress of Families, regularly undermines civil society and human rights. Later, Rev. Mark Luens, Board Chair of Interfaith Alliance of Long Island, New York, will speak about his experience at the Parliament of the World’s Religions. Also on the show, we will talk with the newly appointed editor-in-chief of Religion News Service, Jerome Socolovsky, focusing on his experience with religion journalism and how it has prepared him for this new role. World Congress of Families to Preach Hate and Intolerance at World Gathering A so called pro-family entity, the World Congress of Families, will meet this weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah. Labeled a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center, the WCF has promoted hate in a number of foreign countries, especially towards the LGBT community. Non-profit organization Political Research Associates has long kept its eye on the WCF. Eric Ethington joins us to discuss the work of the WCF in its undermining of human rights around the globe. He’ll discuss the WCF’s global gathering this weekend, which is being held in the U.S. for the first time, and some of the resources that PRA and the Southern Poverty Law Center have assembled to help educate Americans about this dangerous group and their destructive agenda. Religion News Service Appoints Veteran Journalist and Broadcaster as Editor-In-Chief RNS has been a vital resource for us since the start of the show. In an age when a religion is present in so many events around the world, it is more important than ever to have a religion news source that is resolutely secular, objective, and non-sectarian. The appointment of Jerome Socolovsky as editor-in-chief of RNS is exciting news for our community. Jerome is an award-winning veteran religion correspondent for Voice of America Radio, who has also worked for NPR and the Associated Press. Jerome joins Welton to discuss this recent announcement, his career so far, and his priorities for fostering excellence in religion journalism. Parliament of the World’s Religions Embraces Different Countries and Faiths The Parliament of the World’s Religions offers a different perspective on faith than does the World Congress of Families who are preparing for their own gathering this weekend. The individuals at this gathering represented 80 different countries, and an equally diverse group of faiths. The Rev. Mark Lukens, a pastor in the United Church of Christ and Chairperson of the Board of Directors at Interfaith Alliance of Long Island, joins us on State of Belief this week to discuss his experience at the gathering in Salt Lake City. Mark will discuss the goals of the Parliament of the World’s Religions, and the activities that he was involved in at the gathering.
