Right now, there is a 50% vacancy in the chaplain positions in the Oregon Air National Guard. Sadly, it's indicative of the absence of chaplains nationwide.  According to Brigadier General David Unruh, a regular listener to Generations Radio and the commander of 2,400 Airmen in Oregon, he sees a great opportunity for ministry. He hopes Generations listeners who are pastors will prayerfully consider serving one weekend per month in the Oregon National Guard -- or the National Guard of their home state -- as a chaplain.  After listening to the July 4th podcast about The Black Robed Regiment of 18th century pastors who boldly challenged the men in their church to fight for American independence, he emailed me, Adam McManus, and shared that he has passed out dozens of copies of Pastor Jonas Clark's sermon  following the Battle of Lexington to Christian officers. On May 2, 1778, General George Washington issued a unique order for the Continental Army at Valley Forge. It read, “The Commander-in-Chief directs that divine services be performed every Sunday at 11 o'clock on each brigade which has chaplains. While we are duly performing the duty of good soldiers, we are not to be inattentive to the highest duties of religion.”   Brigadier General Unruh said, “The role of ministers serving as military chaplains is older than our nation and is as foundational as any other dearly-held principle of liberty upon which our nation was founded. I personally believe all the other principles of liberty rest on Gospel freedom.” He added, “I am surprised that conservative and reformed Christians do not understand that the Dominion Mandate in Genesis and the Great Commission in Matthew necessarily imply risk and sacrifice.” He cited great historical role models who were willing to take a stand in their day like chaplains should take a stand for Christ today. * Athinasius – who boldly spoke out against the heresy of Arianism, the view that Jesus was not divine as taught by Arius. Athinasius declared, “If the world is against the truth, then I will be against the world.”   * John Knox, the Scottish reformer, who stood for Biblical truth, famously said, “The man who stands with God is always in the majority.” Brigadier General Unruh said, “Knox understood the nature of pastoral mathematics.” * The Apostle Paul who boldly preached the Gospel to Agrippa (Acts 25:13-26:32) and to Caesar. Rear Admiral Gregory Todd, chief of Navy chaplains, urged the church to help find chaplain candidates. He said, “The bulk of our ‘flock' are 18- to 25-year-olds, often faced with adult challenges for the first time in their lives. It involves seeing people through some of their most joyful moments to their most personally challenging.” The soldiers most connected to their faith “are 50%-80% less likely to die by suicide, 60% less likely to suffer depression, 80% less likely to suffer addiction, and 70% less likely to participate in risky behaviors.” So, your work as a chaplain could literally save lives and ensure that Airmen stay on the straight and narrow. If you are younger than the age of 42, have your MDiv or at least 72 hours of graduate work toward a Master of Divinity, can spare one weekend a month which would compensate you $1,200/month, then visit the website www.airforce.com/chaplain, call 240-612-7753, or email ngb.hc.hc.chaplain.corps.org@us.af.mil  To reach Brigadier General David Unruh directly, email david.unruh.4@us.af.mil  This program includes: 1. Eric Zimmerman is a chief of staff for a Multnomah County Commissioner and a Major in the Oregon National Guard. Previously, he worked as a senior advisor to the Mayor of Portland and as an assistant city manager. He's also thinking about running for Portland City Council.    In this episode, we cover Eric's background in the military, his experience running for office, and why he has hope for Portland's future--but wants a more action-oriented set of leaders in charge. We also talk about the time that he punched a man in the face (following an attack on his then-boyfriend)--and what it was like when the story hit the newspapers a year later. Finally, we touch on how the conflict in the Middle East has impacted state and local politics.

Derek Clevenger was the mayor of Aumsville, Oregon. He became mayor after attending a city council meeting and asking questions that council refused to answer about a water and sewer fee that were not widely disclosed to citizens. As the chief petitioner, he leading the recall of half of the City Council of Aumsville and was later elected mayor, unseating the incumbent. He joined the Oregon National Guard, went on active duty, and earned his BA and his MBA while in Afghanistan. He is a trained medic and worked for the Department of State doing defense contracting in Northern Africa. Derek ran for Oregon House District 17 as an unaffiliated candidate. Because he ran as an unaffiliated candidate, he had to collect signatures to get his name on the ballot. If he had run as a Democrat or Republican, he simply would have paid a fee. Former Oregon Secretary of State Shemia Fagan refused to certify his signatures, so Derek did not appear on the ballot. Anna Burns-Francis: Smoke from the Oregon wildfires is so widespread, it reached New York City

Extreme heat and dry conditions are fueling raging wildfires in the western US, charring more than a million acres, requiring evacuations and creating smoky conditions visible from space.Smoke stretched early Wednesday all the way to the East Coast, including New York City, because high-level winds carried them thousands of miles from the West. The smoke mixed down to the surface in New York City, creating an eerie scene Wednesday morning -- though a cold front is expected to usher the smoke out of the area later in the day.In the West, the fires have caused power outages, destroyed structures and prompted the deployment of the Oregon National Guard. As extreme drought still grips most of the West and the fires have become so intense they've created their own weather systems, the threat of more fires remains. In Oregon -- where eight fires have burned nearly 475,000 acres -- officials said the current fire season is unlike any they've seen before."I would categorize this fire season thus far as historic in terms of the amount of resources we've deployed, how many times we've deployed -- within a three-week period we've mobilized to six conflagrations -- and this is the earliest and most significant mobilization to date," Mariana Ruiz-Temple with the Oregon fire marshal's office said Tuesday. At least 1.29 million acres have burned in 83 large fires across 13 states as of Tuesday, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. More than 19,000 wildland firefighters and support personnel have been deployed to deal with the blazes.Advisories for elevated fire potential and activity have been issued across Idaho, California, Oregon and the Northern Rockies, according to fire center. It's not just fires in the US contributing to the smoky haze. The Canadian province of British Columbia declared an emergency due to wildfires there effective Wednesday. Nearly 300 active wildfires have been reported in the province.Bootleg Fire is largest in countryIn Oregon, record-breaking, triple-digit temperatures and severe drought have devastated parts of the state. The conditions are fueling the Bootleg Fire in southern Oregon, which is the largest burning wildfire in the country. The Bootleg Fire has scorched more than 394,000 acres and prompted evacuations with only 32% containment, according to InciWeb, the US clearinghouse for wildfire information. The climate crisis has made deadlier and more destructive wildfires the new normal. And Oregon Gov. Kate Brown cited recent fires, ice storms, record-breaking high temperatures and drought emergencies as evidence that climate change is impacting her state."There's absolutely no question that climate change is playing out for before our eyes," Brown said at a news conference Tuesday. "We saw the heat dome event a few weeks ago; we unfortunately lost a lot of Oregonians through that event. In February, we saw devastating ice storms, over a half a million people lost power last fall, as you are well aware; we've had unprecedented wildfires."Fire potential in the state is being driven by drought conditions, with 90% of the Oregon in either exceptional, extreme or severe drought, Doug Grafe, chief of fire protection at the Oregon Department of Forestry said while forecasting a "long, difficult fire season."He said it's possible that another 50,000 to 100,000 acres could burn before the Bootleg Fire is contained."The future for us for the remainder of the season continues to look above normal dry and above normal temperatures," Grafe said. "So this is not going to return to normal anytime soon."Red flag warnings in the area will continue into Wednesday evening, signaling dry and windy conditions with lots of smoke, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said.As a result of the fires, 62 members of the Oregon National Guard have been deployed, along with Blackhawk helicopters to provide water drops, fire spotting and medivac support, Major General Michael E. Stencel, Adjutant General of...

Intro: (Cue intro music) Hey everyone, welcome back to What a week!, I'm your host, Olivia Lee, here to deliver your weekly dose of the news. Let's get started! In Local News: https://www.kgw.com/article/weather/severe-weather/oregon-power-outages-national-guard-deployed-clackamas-county-winter-storm/283-de885420-204d-48d9-b2d0-449d353285e6https://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/2021/02/national-guard-deploys-as-52000-still-without-power-in-northwest-oregon.htmlPortland General Electric continues to work to restore power after severe weather last week knocked out power across the region. Last friday, Governor Kate Brown called on the Oregon National Guard to go door-to-door in areas hardest hit by the recent ice storm as utility company crews work around the clock to restore power to thousands of residents who have been without electricity for over a week. As of this past Saturday afternoon, a reported 40,000 homes and businesses are still without power in Northwest Oregon. In-state news:https://www.kgw.com/article/news/local/usgs-51-magnitude-earthquake-recorded-off-southern-oregon-coast/283-a204b675-e0cd-4b2a-b020-14321f260ee2 Last saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Southern Oregon. According to USGS, the quake occurred about 175 miles (281 kilometers) west of Bandon at a depth of about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) at 1:15 p.m Saturday. A 4.9 magnitude quake was recorded in the same area minutes later. Shortly after, the National Weather Service in Portland tweeted, quote, "There is NO tsunami danger for the Oregon and Washington coasts."  Speaking about earthquakes, on March 11th, an earthquake warning system called ShakeAlert will be launching in Oregon. The system will be a potentially life-saving tool for people who live on the West Coast when a major earthquake is bound to strike. ShakeAlert is currently active in California. In National News:https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/21/weather/texas-winter-storm-timeline/index.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/02/19/climate/texas-storm-power-generation-charts.htmlhttps://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/20/biden-declares-major-disaster-in-texas-as-state-struggles-with-fallout-from-power-outages.html Last week was a tough one for residents of Texas. The state of Texas experienced an unprecedented winter storm that left millions of people without power and put nearly half of all Texans under a boil-water advisory. Some grocery stores were reportedly wiped out of all goods as Texans rushed to buy whatever they could in wake of the storm, and the aftermaths of it. A major part of the problem that is still being criticized on the news is that the state's deregulated electrical grid was not prepared for the frigid temperatures that accompanied the storm. Natural gas, coal and nuclear plants — which provide the bulk of Texas' power in the winter — were knocked offline, and wind turbines froze, too.  This past Saturday, President Joe Biden approved a major disaster declaration for Texas. The declaration unlocks aid for individuals, grants for temporary housing and home repairs and low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses. https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/21/politics/ted-cruz-cancun-texas-michael-mccaul-cnntv/index.htmlTexas senator, Ted Cruz,  sparked outrage last week when he reportedly took a trip to  Cancún, Mexico while millions in Texas were experiencing blackouts, freezing temperatures and disrupted water services from the storm. Cruz reportedly flew back to Texas just 24 hours after photos of him surfaced on social media of him leaving the state. Cruz said to reporters quote "I started having second thoughts almost the moment I sat down on the plane, because on the one hand, all of us who are parents have a responsibility to take care of our kids, take care of our family. That's something Texans have been doing across the state," Cruz said in an earlier statement that he flew to Mexico because his daughters had asked to take a trip and he was trying to be a quote "good dad."In International News: https://www.vice.com/en/article/bvxaw5/facebook-australia-news-ban-what-does-it-mean Last week, Facebook imposed a so-called “newsban” on the country of Australia in response to a proposed Media Bargaining law that would force tech companies to pay for news content. According to Vice news, the code is designed to ensure that Australian media companies are fairly compensated for the use of their content on social media platforms. Facebook struck back by wiping those media companies from their platform altogether. Anyone logging on to Facebook in Australia last Thursday was met by a message at the top of their news feed stating quote, “The way you share news is changing.”“In response to Australian government legislation, Facebook restricts the posting of news links and all posts from news Pages in Australia. Globally, the posting and sharing of news links from Australian publications is restricted,” the update reads.  So who is affected by this ban? The most prominent issue from this ban so far is that a number of government and emergency services accounts  have had their content removed from facebook. Facebook accounts from state health, fire and emergency departments, domestic violence hotlines and more have been caught in the net of news blacked out by Facebook. Local Australian publishers are also now unable to promote their own content on Facebook. The newly-enforced restrictions extend to international publications such as the banning of certain news posts from global mastheads like but not limited to BBC, CNN and the New York Times. International users are also now barred from viewing or sharing Australian news content on Facebook. Further developments on this ban are still surfacing but as of now, the ban remains in place. There have been multiple speculations that if Facebook eventually agrees to pay for news, bigger jurisdictions such as the US, UK, and European Union could be expected to follow suit with Australia's proceeding.  Lastly here is the wildcard news for the week:https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/touchdown-nasas-mars-perseverance-rover-safely-lands-on-red-planetNASA's Mars Perseverance Rover safely landed on Mars last Thursday, after a 203-day journey traversing a total of  293 million miles. Packed with groundbreaking technology, the Mars 2020 mission launched July 30, 2020, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The Perseverance rover mission marks an ambitious first step in the effort to collect Mars samples and return them to Earth.  Closing: Well that wraps up What a Week! Stay safe and see you guys next week.
