Rewilding means a return to living in reciprocity with the ecologies in which we dwell, and with each other. It is a movement that critiques and rejects social hierarchies and authoritarianism as the “natural” state of humanity. Through contemporary anthropology, paleoanthropology, and archaeology, the rewilding philosophy pieces together how humans created and thrived in egalitarian societies for tens of thousands of years-perhaps hundreds of thousands of years. In one sense, it is essentially a call to anarchy: stateless societies, with collective decision making.Hierarchy at the scale of what we call “the state” only becomes possible from the intensification and the control of food production, through the growing of annual grains. This sedentary, predictable surplus provides the material conditions for a small group of people to force a larger group of people to produce this food for them. These authoritarian societies take many different shapes, from less violent and coercive to the most extreme forms of control and domination, so abhorrent, we recognize them as so-called “crimes against humanity.” Through the rewilding lens, fascism can be seen as the ultimate pinnacle of the authoritarian, hierarchical state, of domestication to the fullest extent possible; using the most modern technologies for total and complete submission of people and of nature. Fascism is the furthest, most oppositional force from our innate wildness. This means that rewilding is inherently anti-fascist.When rewilding as a buzzword for “returning to a wild state” hit the mainstream mostly through diet and fitness culture (such as the so-called paleo lifestyle), it was watered down and perceived by a public that has been taught misconceptions of “wildness.” Projections of grunting cavemen and social darwinism's notions of aggression and competition stand in for actual anthropology of living, thriving, egalitarian societies. This biased and incomplete picture of wildness has cast an oppressive shadow over the term rewilding, allowing in individuals who promote hate and inequality as the natural state of humans. As we have seen in the past, fascism is often a reactionary attempt by the people to maintain order during a decline or societal collapse. As we enter a time of economic uncertainty, climate crises, and more, fascism is a growing, ever present threat. To keep rewilding on course, to educate people on the collaborative, mutual aid relationships that define human wildness, rewilders must actively work against fascism today, and the fascist creep, into our ideologies and movements. To talk with me today about this growing threat, is Alexander Reid Ross. Alexander is a scholar with a diverse background. He earned his PhD in the Earth, Environment, Society program at Portland State University. He is the editor of the book Grabbing Back: Essays Against the Global Land Grab, and authored a book on the transnational far right called Against the Fascist Creep. People talk about "horseshoe theory," but where does it come from? The idea of a "red-brown alliance" has been part of political discourse for decades, and plays up on the notion that the very far left and very far right have common interests in countering the status quo. Alexander Reid Ross is a geographer and political historian who has written about this phenomenon extensively. Tracing it back to its roots, he also has documented instances of where he has observed this in his own activism — which has sometimes earned him criticism. Dave talks with Alex about the history of this phenomenon and what we can do about it going forward. What - we ask - can concerned observers can do to combat this influx of far-right activity in their local communities? Special Guests: Alexander Reid Ross and Anna Duensing.
Genocide and disinformation. That's the topic of today's heady program. I hope none of you have had the pleasure of debating the Uighur genocide with friends or with, god forbid, with anonymous people on the internet. And so we kick off 2022, IDSG's fourth year, with an episode about the Denver shooter and self-published SF novelist (who put himself and his own murder plans in his own books) Lyndon McCleod, AKA Roman McClay, and his relationship to the infamous 'Manosphere', AKA a network of misogynistic and 'masculinist' fashy chudlingers like Jack Murphy, Jack Davenport, etc. We follow up a bit on our last episode (Part 1 of our post-verdict Rittenhouse coverage) and drop back in on the nauseating You Are Here podcast, and Baldy McDickface's Tim Pool's show, as we explore the recent flap around Jack Murphy's 'Cuck Letter' (don't ask... well, just listen), before delving a tad into McCleod/McClay's fiction and his worldview, including some hardcore stoopid genetic determinism. Lots going on in this one, and so we're issuing bigtime content warnings, not least for the recorded voice of a multiple murderer. She is currently at his apartment, checked in with me via text and is presumably sucking and fucking her way to a good time. I'm alone writing. Couldn't be happier. Now before you write me off as another salon.com freak who wants to be a cuckold or some kind of spineless beta under male, hear me out. This has been a long road. My manhood is intact and my dick is hard. [...] It is suspended disbelief. This disbelief allows us to create a gap to close. It creates space for desire to reach out to the other person. Role playing stranger rape puts us into different personas for the moment, creating mystery danger and desire. Ie. its fucking hot. Matt from Tinder helps us to introduce another element which requires suspended disbelief. Just like my girlfriend knows I could nor ever would actually rape her, I too know that my girlfriend is not going to leave me for some guy she met on tinder today to fuck. The entire experience is regimented according to my rules. I introduced her to the idea. I pushed it. I told her to go on Tinder and find someone. On the day in question, I tell her when and where to do it. She checks in with me via text. I know where she is and I am waiting for her. She is not alone. She is on a mission sent directly by me. And the entire point is for me to get turned on in a way that wouldn't happen otherwise. The excitement, eustress, and anticipation put me in a different state. I get turned on knowing someone else wants my girl as badly as I do. Yes, I get turned on knowing she is fucking someone else. We've done it together where we picked up a guy at a bar, took him home and I watched them have sex. Or we've brought a guy from craig's list over and I took pictures as he banged her. This time, I just sent her on her way and gave myself time to write and relax, knowing that exceptional sex awaits upon reunion. The time she spends with the other guy, isn't really hers alone. Its ours. Its mine. Its her acting out my ideas. Her behavior is manifestation of my will. Rod Dreher, The American Conservative, Queer as Volk It turns out that back in 2015, Murphy, who now sells himself and his masculinist advisory services as an extreme chad, wrote a piece extolling the erotic pleasure of being a beta cuck. You can find this online; I'm not going to link to it. Some Redditors got busy digging, and found that Murphy and his girlfriend had acted in a self-made porn broadcast back in 2019 (Murphy admitted this on Twitter today). In the film, there is apparently a sequence in which the super-masculine Murphy impales himself with a plastic phallus, while simultaneously pleasuring himself. This is not a rumor, alas; I stumbled across the image online, and can't unsee it. Denver Post, Denver gunman's novels named real-life victims, described similar attacks McLeod named both Alicia Cardenas and Michael Swinyard as murder victims in his novels. Cardenas, 44, and Swinyard, 67, were both killed in Monday's shooting spree. Police believe McLeod killed Swinyard inside his home at One Cheesman Place, an apartment building in the 1200 block of Williams Street. A property manager for the building told residents in an email that McLeod wore tactical gear, a police logo and a badge when he entered the building. In McLeod's first novel, “Lyndon MacLeod” wears police gear and kills a character named “Michael Swinyard” at his apartment on Williams Street. The character in the book also kills other people in the building and robs them. The character has a list of people he wants to kill and considers some to be more important than others. “The murders were like food in the belly, like wine at rest on the tongue,” the first book reads. “Killing people nourished the soul.” Heavy, Lyndon McLeod aka Roman McClay: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know Wineberserkers forum, Have you dealt with LJ McLeod Matthew Kriner, H. In Episode 66 of the CounterVortex podcast, Bill Weinberg interviews Alexander Reid Ross, author of Against the Fascist Creep and a fellow at the Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI), who has faced threats of litigation as well as relentless online harassment for his exposés of Russian propaganda and Red-Brown Politics. After his recent piece in the Daily Beast on leftist flirtation with the far right around conspiracy theories concerning COVID-19 and the war in Syria, the odious Max Blumenthal quickly retaliated with a piece on his Grayzone website charging in its headline that Reid Ross "works with ex-cops, CIA spies, and DHS agents." This refers to the fact that former CIA, Homeland Security and NYPD officials are now also researchers with the NCRI. The accusation is hilariously ironic given that Blumenthal himself has shared platforms with former CIA analyst (and now a star of the conspiracy set) Ray McGovern. As well as (of course) avidly cooperating with Russian and Chinese state propaganda efforts. Among examples discussed in the interview... A new report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), "Strange bedfellows on Xinjiang: The CCP, fringe media and US social media platforms," names Grayzone as "amplified by Chinese and Russian state-affiliated entities" in "state-sponsored disinformation...campaigns." In addition to practicing "junket journalism" to serve the propaganda interests of the Bashar Assad regime, Blumenthal's tweets have blatantly poked perverse fun at Syrian chemical attack victims. But apart from the dizzying hypocrisy of Blumenthal painting Reid Ross as a CIA collaborator, it constitutes what was known in the COINTELPRO era of the 1960s as "snitch-jacketing"—a phenomena that led to the cannibalization of the radical opposition movements of the day. Thousands of social media accounts have been purged from the Internet in the wake of the Capitol riots, as tech companies reevaluate the role their services played in organising that chaotic event. It marks the culmination of years of anxiety over extreme beliefs being collectively developed on social media platforms. So how has the American right changed in recent years -- and how did that play into events at the Capitol? Alexander Reid Ross is a doctoral fellow at the Center for Analysis of the Radical Right and an adjunct professor at Portland State University. He speaks to Te Aniwa Hurihanganui.
When Trump gave the go-ahead for his mob to storm the Capitol last week, it manifested more as a media event than an organized political coup. As Trump loses power, his followers doubtless will fight harder for relevance and air time. On this week's Kicker, Davey Alba, a New York Times technology reporter covering online disinformation and its global harms, and Alexander Reid Ross, a doctoral fellow at the Center for Analysis of the Radical Right and an adjunct professor at Portland State University, join Kyle Pope, editor and publisher of CJR, to discuss what journalists should look for online as Trump leaves office.
In our latest episode, we talk with author of Against the Fascist Creep Alexander Reid Ross (@areidross) about America's history of political violence and the right wing creep in the United States. From slave patrols to far right groups protesting COVID19 mask requirements and attacking Black Lives Matter protests today, America has a long history of political violence. Much of the deadliest has been carried out by forces of reaction and racism (i.e. right-wingers). We talk about the history of right wing violence, how it compares with movements on the left, current dynamics around militia groups, influences of Trump and the rise of eco-fascists. This is a segment of episode #270 of Last Born In The Wilderness “Testing Ground: Flash Points On The Road To Autocracy w/ Alexander Reid Ross & Shane Burley.” Listen to the full episode: http://bit.ly/LBWrossburley2 Read Alexander Reid Ross and Shane Burley’s article ‘Portland Is Trump's Testing Ground for Authoritarian Rule’: https://bit.ly/3hXXoia With protests persisting over 100 days at this point, Portland has been a beacon of resistance to police brutality and repression, with anti-racist protestors contending with intermittent violent intimidation from far-right groups, as well the recent intrusions from federal officers from various divisions of the Department of Homeland Security, loyal to President Trump. I ask Shane to explain the conditions journalists covering the protests are working under, highlighting numerous examples of press being actively targeted, arrested, and brutalized by police since protests began. And finally, we address Alexander and Shane’s article published for Haarez in July, ‘Portland Is Trump's Testing Ground for Authoritarian Rule.’ What does this escalation of police violence directed towards protestors and journalists, the dramatic uptick of far-right vigilante violence across the United States, and Trump’s active encouragement of these trends portend for the upcoming presidential election and its inevitable fallout? “If both the federal incursion and their questionable tactics become a precedent, it’s not a long way from Trump disrupting democratic functioning and dissent come November. If Trump wins in November, this militarized federal intervention could escalate; and if he loses, he has prepared the ground for federal officers to intervene if he discounts the results. For now, Portland is the laboratory for a new politics of anti-constitutional state-sponsored violence and the suppression of civil rights. The question is what will happen when Portland ceases to be an extreme outlier and becomes a prelude to wider roll-out of authoritarian rule.” Shane Burley is a journalist based in Portland, Oregon. [Intro: 8:06] In this episode, I speak with Alexander Reid Ross, author of 'Against the Fascist Creep', and Shane Burley, author of 'Fascism Today: What It Is and How to End It.' We discuss several important topics, including the historic ongoing wave of protests and uprisings across the United States since May this year, as well as the disturbing uptick of incidences of far-right vigilantism since then. We also examine one of the flash points in these struggles — Portland, Oregon — where Shane and Alexander are based. With protests persisting over 100 days at this point, Portland has been a beacon of resistance to police brutality and repression, with anti-racist protestors contending with intermittent violent intimidation from far-right groups, as well the recent intrusions from federal officers from various divisions of the Department of Homeland Security, loyal to President Trump. The question is what will happen when Portland ceases to be an extreme outlier and becomes a prelude to wider roll-out of authoritarian rule.” (https://bit.ly/3hXXoia) Shane Burley is a journalist based in Portland, Oregon. We spoke to Alexander about his feudin' & fightin' with Glenn Greenwald as well as a bit about his book Against The Fascist Creep, and the ways in which fascists attempt to co-opt Left movements. With bonus commentary from Canadian social justice comic book publishers Ad Astra & Jeremy from the Giving The Mic To The Wrong Person podcast.
This week, we have two portions to the show. First, we catch up with Mitch from Red Strings and Maroons podcast about some of what they saw at the A2 rally in Richmond on January 20th, about antifascist intervention and the effectiveness of intervening to call out white nationalists in gun advocacy spaces. More of their work available at RedStringsAndMaroons.com. If you are interested in hearing from Mitch, and also in hearing this week's Sean Swain segment, head on over to our podcast at https://thefinalstrawradio.noblogs.org! Then, we spend the remainder of the show speaking with Alexander Reid Ross. Alexander is a PhD candidate in Portland State University's Earth, Environment, Society Program, a Doctoral Fellow at the Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right, and the author of “Against The Fascist Creep”, which you can get from AK Press or our affiliate Firestorm Books! For the remainder of the episode we speak about conspiracy theories, how they wind their way into some leftist approaches to critique, bleed-over between left and right anti-establishment critiques and media that hold a pro-Kremlin position, the ideas of Alexander Dugin, ways of combating disinformation and some of it's sources. More of his writings and interviews can be found at AlexanderReidRoss.net and this article that we reference a bit is called “Fooling The Nation: Extremism and the Pro-Russia Disinformation Ecosystem”. . ... . .. playlist pending

(http://bit.ly/2lvaU5r) Ngo is best known for using his prominent social media platform to promote and spin provocative right-wing media narratives, demonstrated in his coverage of street clashes between antifascists and far-right groups over the past several years — most notoriously in Portland, Oregon. His promotion of the concocted narrative that antifascists activists (antifa) are anti-free speech and even terroristic (#antifaterrorists), has had real consequence in the lives and safety of journalists and activists, including Alexander and Shane. (http://bit.ly/2koyQHe) While Ngo is discussed in this episode at some length, Shane and Alexander contextualize the rise of right-wing media figures like Ngo within the wider media environment. Capitalist and centrist liberal values, as embodied by the most prominent media outlets in the country, often consistently fail to provide proper context to a wide range of events, which in turn leaves room for a sort of “fascist creep” to take place in way these events are discussed and presented to the wider public. Without proper investigative research, prominent media outlets fail to do their part in connecting the dots in the rise of white supremacist violence, whether that be in their coverage of the frequency of racially motivated mass shootings in the United States and abroad, the increasingly visible street violence between antifascists and far-right groups, and rising far right populism in nations around the world. There is real danger here in the concocted narratives spun by figures like Ngo: without proper vetting by mainstream journalists in their coverage of these events, disingenuous media personalities with far-right tendencies like Ngo are given a pass and even legitimized, giving space for misinformation surrounding antifascist activism to spread. Alexander and Shane discuss this, and much more, in this episode. Author and journalist, Alexander Reid-Ross returns to Lush Left! We discussed his latest piece in Haaretz, "Steve Bannon's Fascist Far Right Christian Army Is Marching on Liberal Europe -- and on the Pope" https://www.haaretz.com/world-news/.premium-bannon-s-far-right-christian-army-is-marching-on-liberal-europe-and-on-the-pope-1.7151097 Bannon is cynically exploiting the divisions in the Catholic church to recruit people in his extremist far Right Wing agenda. A must-listen!
[Intro: 17:30] In this episode, I speak with author, journalist, and political researcher Shane Burley. We discuss the recent mass shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand, in which an Australian white supremacist targeted Muslim worshippers at two separate mosques, leading to the deaths of 50 people — the largest in the nation’s history. We place this event within Shane’s larger analysis of far right ideology and insurgency, which has been thoroughly examined in Shane’s journalism on the subject, as well as in previous interviews I have had with him.* In this discussion with Shane, we touch on an Op-Ed Alexander Reid Ross and Shane very recently co-wrote for The Independent, titled ‘How to defeat the cretinous ‘great replacement’ theory at the heart of the Christchurch mosque attack,’ in which they respond to the recent mass shooting in Christchurch by self-proclaimed white supremacist Brenton Tarrant. Aside from embodying the most vile and insurgent aspects of white supremacist ideological violence, Tarrant live-streamed the mass killing of 50 Muslim worshippers at the Al Noor and Linwood mosques on platforms such as Facebook and YouTube. Along with his eagerness to share his violent acts with the world, Tarrant left a "manifesto" of sorts, which clearly defines what his motivations were for the targeted attacks, including the highly dubious claims that the "white race" is being systematically replaced and displaced from their position of dominance in European and European-in-origin societies (United States, Australia, New Zealand, and the like) by "Non-European" races through mass migration and high birthrates.** We place this mass shooting in Christchurch within Shane's robust analysis of the patterns of far right insurgent violence, as demonstrated by the long and growing list of so-called ”lone wolf" attacks on minority groups in predominantly European and European-in-origin societies over the past several decades, and especially in the past five years or less. What is fueling these attacks, and how do we combat these horrible ideologies that embolden individuals to "take matters into their own hands"? We examine possible answers to this question by identifying the root of the anxiety inherent in white identity in the modern era, including the role late-stage capitalism and ecological collapse plays in giving rise to these outbursts of violence around the world. Shane Burley is a writer and filmmaker who regularly reports on far-right movements in the US, as well as anti-fascist resistance, workers rights, and class struggle. He is the author of ‘Fascism Today: What It Is and How to End It’ from AK Press, and his work has appeared in numerous publications, such as Jacobin, Truthout, and Commune Magazine. *http://bit.ly/BehindEveryLoneWolf **http://bit.ly/2FygvQ5 Episode Notes: - Read Shane and Alexander Reid Ross’ recent op-ed in The Independent: https://ind.pn/2uwtF9X - Read Shane’s recent work in Truthout: http://bit.ly/2OjOHSd - Learn more about Shane and his work at his website: https://www.shaneburley.net - Follow Shane on Twitter: https://twitter.com/shane_burley1 - Pick up Shane’s book ‘Fascism Today: What It Is and How to End It’ from AK Press: http://bit.ly/BurleyFT - The songs featured in this episode are “Öngyilkos Vasárnap” and “Hajnal” by Venetian Snares from the album Rossz Csillag Alatt Született. Kevin interviews anarchist author Alexander Reid Ross about fascism, environmentalism, some of the differences between anarchism and Marxism, and his views on the state of today's left. Mary Angela talks with author of “Against the Fascist Creep”, Alexander Reid Ross about his fascinating book. We discuss the rise of fascism in Europe, the origins, the reality that the far RW has existed in the United States since the end of WW2 -- we discuss this, the rise of the alt right and so much more. As the election of Donald Trump shows, fascism in all its white nationalist and alt-right permutations is alive and well in the United States. Alexander’s book maps the connections, names the names and is incredibly insightful!
Authors Shane Burley (Fascism Today: What It Is and How to End It) and Alexander Reid Ross (Against the Fascist Creep) help define fascism and its core tenets of misogyny, transphobia, and white supremacy along with its drive to appropriate leftist rhetoric and cultural artifacts.
