In their book, “Safety Through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antisemitism,” Shane Burley and Ben Lorber, two activist journalists, present a progressive, intersectional approach to the vital question: What can we do about antisemitism? Using personal stories, historical deep-dives, front-line reporting, and interviews with leading change-makers, Burley and Lorber help us break the current impasse to understand how antisemitism works, what's missing in contemporary debates, and how to build true safety through solidarity, for Jews and all people. Featuring co-authors Ben Lorder and Shane Burley Moderated by Shaul Magid, HDS Visiting Professor of Modern Jewish Studies This is the first event in RPL's Religion, Conflict, and Peace 2024-25 Book Series. Full transcript forthcoming.

A recent conversation we had with the Ben Lorber and Shane Burley, co-authors of the recently published book, Safety Through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antisemitism. For the hour we discuss the roots of antisemitism in the West, pushing back on Zionism in the midst of the genocidal war on Palestinians, a rebirth of Bundism and addressing antisemitism in left spaces. I definitely recommend this book to folks and hope you enjoy the chat! And as always, thanks for supporting this project. If you're a non-Pacifica station looking for this weeks 58 minute radio show, you can find it here. We're hoping Archive.Org will be back online and allow us to upload files there soon. Antisemitism is on the rise today. From synagogue shootings by white nationalists, to right-wing politicians and media figures pushing George Soros conspiracy theories, it's clear that exclusionary nationalist movements are growing. By spreading division and fear, they put Jews, along with other marginalized groups and multiracial democracy itself, at risk. And since the outbreak of war in Gaza, debates around antisemitism have become more polarized and high-stakes than ever. How can we stand in solidarity with Palestinians seeking justice, while also avoiding antisemitism — and resisting those who seek to conflate the two? How do we forge the coalitions across communities that we need, in order to overcome the politics of division and fear? In Safety through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antisemitism (Melville House, 2024), Shane Burley and Ben Lorber help us break the current impasse to understand how antisemitism works, what's missing in contemporary debates, and how to build true safety through solidarity, for Jews and all people. In May 2019, Jennifer Lorber embarked on a journey to Malibu, California, a destination she had frequented many times. Strangely, this time, she chose to keep her plans under wraps. Upon arrival, she checked into a motel, reunited with an old friend, and her last known whereabouts were captured on security cameras in the parking lot of a beachside cafe. The perplexing turn of events unfolded when, six days later, Jennifer's lifeless body was discovered in the ocean in a location that had undergone repeated searches while she was missing. What transpired during the time Jennifer disappeared until her body was recovered? Was it a tragic suicide, an unfortunate accident, or could it be foul play? The Lorber society was a religious cult formed in the early 1800s in Dresden, Germany. Harald Alexander had taken over the leadership of this cult after the previous leader George Riehle passed away. After assuming the leadership of the group, Harald would give them one more dogma to abide by- that his second son, the newborn Frank, was the messiah of God. The rest is FUCKING WEIRD. Our conversation today is with Dr. Colleen M. Lorber — Founder & CEO of Wraparound Experts.Colleen Lorber has her Ph.D. in School Psychology and founded Wraparound Experts from over 15 years in the field, combining her knowledge of the environments and professionals that she has worked with to provide a model of services that “wrap around” a child and the environments and people that influence the success of the child every day.Colleen knew she wanted to be a child psychologist in the 6th grade and that goal and determination drove her to complete her doctorate at the age of 27. During her undergraduate and graduate school years, Colleen worked at residential treatment facilities for at-risk youth where she helped children with autism through behavioral therapy and mobile therapy services. When Colleen was completing her doctorate, she began working at a privately owned company as a psychology intern and after 15 years, she departed from the company as its Chief Operating Officer where she was managing over 1,000 employees spanning psychologists, speech therapists, special education teachers, Title 1 teachers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, RNs, LPNs, Medical Assistants, and School Health Aides.Unfortunately, the research coming out examining the current state of our society's mental health is dismal. The pandemic has clearly had an effect on how we are operating our everyday lives. Colleen and Wraparound Experts believe that the way to begin to work on our mental health, starting with children in Ohio, is to bring it back to concentrate on our basic human needs which include not only our physical/biological needs but also our feelings of safety/security, love and belonging, and esteem — this is the exact nature of the work Colleen is pushing forward with Wraparound Experts and what we spend our conversation exploring today — Please enjoy my conversation with Colleen Lorber.--Connect with Dr. Colleen Lorber on LinkedInLearn more about Wrap Around ExpertsFollow Wraparound Experts on Twitter @wraparoundexpe1--Connect with Jeffrey Stern on LinkedInFollow Jeffrey Stern on Twitter @sternJefeFollow Lay of The Land on Twitter @podlayofthelandhttps://www.jeffreys.page/
Most of us have a person in our lives, often an elderly family member, who speaks without filters and says exactly what's on his or her mind. Sometimes we laugh, sometimes we cringe, but if we listen closely, these "outbursts" may also contain some important life lessons. And even when they don't, they're entertaining. Author Bonnie Lorber Habyan, a John Carroll graduate , has not only listened to her mother's seemingly random thoughts over the years but has compiled them into a new book, "The World According to Bess." Published on her mother's 91st birthday, "The World According to Bess" is out now and ready to be shared with the world. We spoke with Bonnie back in September, when she was at an earlier stage in the book process, and on episode #72 we welcome her back to update us and share stories about what it was like growing up with Bess. In hearing tales from Bess's world, we may also gain a deeper appreciation for those unfiltered sages in our own lives. Bonnie Habyan's website: https://www.meetbonnieh.com/"The World According to Bess" is available at all major booksellers.
